The black Trans Am with gold eagle on the hood from Smokey and the Bandit was to me, the coolest, most beautiful car ever made. It was perfection. Why do they stop making cars like that? My first car was a 1979 blue, two tone, Rally Sport Camaro, with t-tops that I bought used in 1985. Sure the engine overheated after driving it for more than an hour, but damn it looked awesome.

And based on a real event, the organiser of which (Brock Yates) features in the movie as....the event organiser. In reality, he actually DID drive a Dodge Van made to look like an ambulance, along with his wife in the back as the patient for when they got pulled over by the cops (which actually happened). They were a DNF though sadly, arriving at the finishing point on a flat bed truck having suffered a transmission failure (also referenced in the movie).

As they are not scared to take a risk on playing a part in a novie which may be panned by critics.
If you are an up and coming actor one bad movie can end your career, if you already have made millions you just don't have to care if the movie bombs. It's not that Dean Martin, Burt, Roger and the rest were needing the money.
The same thing goes for Clint Eastwood, the 2 movies he made with the ape as his companion were slaughtered by critics,, but Clint and his co stars were in a position that they could take a risk and doing a movie just for fun.

A massive uncultured V8 in the front, rear wheel drive with vey few driver aids like traction control attached and made of fibreglass made it light. So with the older corvettes it really was a case of FLOOR THE GAS AND HANG ON TO YOUR ASS.

Saw cannonball run when it first came out in 1981 when I was 12 years old.
I was going to the movies with my then best friend. We were a couple of fanatics about the movies. We talked, read, ate, drank, and slept the movies. And we went to the movies together once a week, every week, from the 1970s-1980s. We saw literally hundreds upon hundreds of movies together. He always chose the movies we went to see. I didnt mind. I loved the movie theatergoing experience in itself. And after seeing our movie, we'd retreat back to his place to watch even more movies on his tv, whatever happened to be airing that afternoon and evening.
We tried to see every new movie that came out regardless of the story, genre (he loved horror movies, I preferred comedies), critics reviews, or who starred in it. So, there was no particular reason we went to see Cannonball Run. It just happened to be one of the latest, newest releases to the theaters.
It initially got bad reviews mostly, but when I saw it, the theater was packed, and the audience, my friend, and myself thoroughly enjoyed it, laughing all the way through. It's a real fun, crowd pleaser of a movie and was one of the biggest box office hits of the year.
Going to the movies in the 1970s-1980s with my best friend is among my most fondest memories of not only my childhood, but my entire life.

That makes this movie a classic.
Coming up with Roger Moore as a wealthy businessman who thinks he is James Bond, with a different girl next to him in every scene, driving a tricked out Aston is pure genious, as is the fact that they were all making fun of each other with blatant but funny namecalling like "Chocolate Monk" or "Goodyear Blimp"
Todays "stars" are always in it for the money, and sexist or rude jokes (even made completely tongue in cheek, without any vile meanings) are a big nono nowadays.
