Hi ladies, nice to meet you again :)
This is one of the best interpretations of the lyrics that I have heard so far, it coincides to a large extent with my interpretation. It is obvious from the structure of the song that it is about a duality (good - bad for example), that it is about an evolution, like life (the relentless flow of the river to the sea) and the souls of children (people / mortals, in their passage through life ) are the subject of this permanent conflict. But your interpretations of some of the lyrics are very significant. Thank you!

You have to really understand the movie that went with this album to see how it fits in. Tuomas often uses the metaphor of a river as representing the flow of life. with a beginning and an end. You can't stop the flow, but enjoy the ride, taking both the good, the bad, and the scary as it comes by along the shore. "It's a scary ride we'd give anything to take." I think you got the interpretation of the lyrics pretty darn well!

@@generationgapreacts I concur with Chris. The movie will really give you deeper insight into the themes of the songs on the album. The movie and album were companion pieces. It's really QUITE good. Tuomas co-wrote the film (as if he didn't have enough talent already)! It's available here on YT, link below. Maybe you could react to ???? Hint: all the band members at the time are in it, plus Troy (not yet a member).

Marko's part is the voice of fear -- fear of death; Floor's part is the calming voice, the assuring voice, reaching into you and gently caressing you heart... assuring you that there is nothing to fear at all. There is deep love in her voice, and love allays all fears.

I often cry, wen I hear this song. My bonus daughter, became a drugaddict when se was only 14 The fear of loosing her to the drugs, and the fight, getting her out of it.. Ghost River, describes it so well we thought it was over, then a new wawe came, and took her away again. All the little islands, to give some rest. I love and hate this song at the same time.
Fortunately, she has been out of druga, for almost a year now, so we cross our fingers, but it has taken us around 6 years to get here.
Toumas is a genius with lyrics. He really know how to describe the aspects of life.

One of my Nightwish favorites. My favorite part, by far, is Emppu hopping at the beginning of the breakdown, then striking the ultimate guitar god pose while playing the line. There is so much energy in this song! The more you listen to it, the more you learn to love it. It really is about the light and dark, but it's so hopeful. Great analysis, Baby Gap ... and don't worry, Mama Bear ... nobody is gonna take your only child. Nobody is strong enough! The love is mighty!

Good call on the evil person, and the underworld vibes. Tuomas has said that this song is a duel between the Devil and Mother Gaia.
Yes, Marko and Floor always sounded good together. Love the back and forth vocals. Good catch on Floor's growls. The studio version is from the Imaginaerum album, with Anette and Marko singing. Here at Wacken it was song #4, just before Everdream , which is why Floor said a softer start in the Everdream intro.

(Mother Gaia is the goddess who the ancients believed represented Earth). He explained to Metal Hammer magazine: "Since this is a dramatic album about the celebration of life and existence, you need the dark side as well. I love the dark side and I love all kinds of evil stuff, so we needed a few songs to describe those. 'Ghost River' and 'Rest Calm' are the two songs that are talking about the dark side of life.""

I think you both interpreted it well. Tuomas described this as a “duel between the Devil and mother Gaia”. (Mythical goddess representing Earth, essentially mother Earth, or Mother Nature) You can figure out which was which. He felt the album was a celebration of life on earth, and it needed something from the dark side as well. I “definitely” think you should check out how this Wacken show started, with Dark Chest of Wonders. Love the channel.

The song is about facing your fears (represented as a dangerous river) and the dangers of life in order to live it to the full. This is what Tuomas more or less said when he explained what he wrote it about. Marko represents the fears, the horrors of life and Floor the positive side, in a verbal duel with each other.

I feel like this one is more ambiguous in meaning than others. I picture an old man trying to scare children from crossing the dangerous river, while a siren is all sweet-talk and luring them in (watch the way she dance and growl, that's not a clear "good guy" character).

I love the imagery Tuomas uses in this song and the way i've always thought of it is like the river is a test. Marko is the voice trying to tempt you to his side, he's the embodiment of depression and all the negative things we might think of, time running out etc... But Floor is the one trying to give you hope. Marko uses threats of you ending up in this riverbed ghost town if you give up, Floor is saying don't lose heart, let yourself bleed but leave a footprint on every island you see, it's okay to feel pain, but let it make you stronger.
What i find cool about this song is how they both sing the line 'do come across'. They both want you to succeed, they both want you to fight the current. They both see that you have value.

Floor and Marko are playing roles in this song. Marko plays the dark river spirit and Floor plays the mother Gaia role. Floor is urging the children and all of us to take a chance. Cross the river and pursue your dreams. We only live once. There is no choice but to live life to its fullest. Don't be afraid.
Remember Tuomas uses lots of metaphors to portray emotions and different aspects of life. The term rape is definitely being used metaphorically.
The River wild (Ghost River) is representing the journey of life. IMHO.
Being raped and drown is a metaphor for being stripped of your childhood innocence. All children start with a joy for life. The world takes it from us as we grow and experience the turmoil of real life as an adult.
The troll once again is the darkness and danger which lies underneath the bridge which leads to our dreams. Think of all these lyrics in this regard. Or find your own meaning.
Loved it ladies. Some of the best stories have an underlying darkness which adds to the mystery and excitement of the ride. Be well lovey ladies! Peace and love. Hope to see you again very soon.

Marko represents the devil or Satan, the taker of souls ..... Floor is mother Gaia and the song the struggle between the two. Gaia (mother earth) is a recurring theme in Tuomas's works, and the use of the word Gaia can be heard in Storytime early in the lyrics, and in the song The Greatest Show on Earth, the lyric "the mother of all" can be heard, and again used in a thematic way to what the song is about. Tuomas's works are always so beautifully deep and meaningful!

In particular, I second Chris Tomashofski's comment that watching the film Imaginaerum puts a lot more context around every song on the album.
Several things about Ghost River stand out to me:
Floor soaring legato over Marco's gritty staccato bass line
Floor doing the sultry dance moves at one point
Emppu bouncing sideways across the stage; and his gesture near the beginning, shrugging "nothing for me to do here"
Floors subtle drop into a growl - blink and you'll miss it
The way Floor drops in and out of grit/distortion in the same phrase
The guitar line is much more complex than you might think - there's some strange rhythm stuff going on in there

Great interpretations! I see both characters as being so much bigger than human they work on a different level with different concerns, so while Marko's Devil represents the negative, death and destruction, Floor's Gaea will still crush you - just (com)passionately. From the Earth we came, and to it we will return. Please do react to the _Imaginaerum_ movie sometime (bring tissues if you've had to cope with family members with dementia, though).

The second track of the album is Storytime which sets the tone and theme for the rest of the album. Of course many others have mentioned the companion movie.
Ya'll have already reacted to a few of the song off the album. Here's a full track listing.

10.The Crow, the Owl, and the Dove
    11.Last Ride of the Day
    12.Song of Myself
    13. Imaginaerum
Tracks 2, 3, 5, 11, and 12 were performed at the Wacken 2013 concert. I'd recommend reacting to those along with tracks 4 and 6 before starting to listen to the album as a whole.

A tiny little detail most people won't pick up.
When Emppu is standing at Tuomas's riser at the beginning and he amusingly shrugs his shoulders at having nothing to play, that hit me as particularly funny. Because for that album 'Imaginaerum' Emppu had only two or three guitar solos on the entire album, and all he did on guitar was just chug along with the melody on every song.
On that one Tuomas was far more enamoured with the orchestral parts than the metal. So the guitar was kind of an afterthought. I'm sure Emppu recorded all of his parts in a week.

Thx for another reaction. I saw it from the beginning that this one definitely wasn't the favorite for one of you...😁. But it's just ok and fair. I used to like this song very much, but for me the heavier stuff that I've become just recently to know, Wintersun, just is not that intense in rythm, even though the lyrics are very dark, and there's a lot of male growling (coming out from a guy with just one lung). I could easily think this one of Nightwish could actually be played in a disco. Surely Nightwish has many really heavy songs I love, many of them are from their early production and the most of them cannot be seen live at all.
During my years with Nightwish (and thanks to them) I've found other great bands too. One especially to mention is this Wintersun, whose two former full time members also are now playing in Nightwish. Kai's drumming abilities can really be seen and heard in this bands production. And Jukka, the new bassist, has song a few backgrounds there. So in fact I would like to hear him in some parts in Nightwish too.

It is one of there more heavier songs due to there lyrics. Fortunatly for you ladies Nightwish also has more nicer lighthearted songs to enjoy. But while you there do check out Tuomas side projects and more of Floor's own music including Beste Zangers but best to get this from her page as RUclips loves hitting people with copy rights. Thank you

This is a dark one but as always there is a happy ending. Marko is the evil entity, Floor is the hope that beckons lost soles to the light.

Marco is like the storyteller warning the villagers or scaring them into listening and Floor is the evil siren trying to sucker everyone in with her beauty and song! That's my take, so they are kind of playing opposite to what you at first hear and think.

Great reaction ladies. Your analysis was spot on. I have heard this song explained two different ways. The first Marko's character is trying to lure you to an evil end and Floor is a beautful mother character calling you to cross the bridge to safety. The second is Marko is a benevolent troll warning you of what awaits if you cross the bridge and Floor is the SIren/Witch trying to sweetly lure you across the bridge. Good catch on the growly voice from Floor. To hear another side of Marko's voice and very appropriate for Valentine's day would be Kiss Why Your Lips are still Red, live from Wembley. Probably my favorite Marko song with him singing lead. A very sweet song about innocent young love where Marko's vocie is so emotional and vulnerable. Another great example is Marko singing Black Sabbath's Planet Caravan as a lullaby for Jukka's newborn child. ruclips.net/video/-XBZutbxSf4/видео.html.

Too bad in the last 2 years and in the future, Nightwish have not or will not ever sing this song again. No Marko. But time moves on. Ghost River is just really badass.

Lovebites. Have I recommended them to you? My other favorite band in addition to Nightwish. They bring it though. Where Nightwish is symphonic metal, Lovebites is full-on power metal. They have some things that change the pace up too, and some surprises with piano. Lots of things. I'll recommend them though, in case you want to check out something different, or add them to your pool of possible reactions. I think they're amazing. I'll suggest Holy War, live from Zepp. It's the standard first reaction for them, but if you go deeper, other songs of theirs are my favorites. ruclips.net/video/bgAxpEpEcno/видео.html

Finnish folklore has plenty of water spirit characters, what with all the sea, lakes, and rivers around, so the river ghost is likely an allusion to an evil water demon character (Nakki?), associated with the drowned, particularly kids, e.g. "don't swim too deep or the demon will get you". Imaginaerum, the album this comes from, is steeped in folklore and this particular character, I believe, is not unique to Finland either

I love this song and I love this short but deep growl from Floor. What I don't like is this eternally long growl she did before her time on Nightwish. That's why I don't like Jinjer, for example.
