I feel bad for the Vet. Those people took advantage of him, raked in the dough, left him with a sliver of the pie, and went off to make themselves rich, while he was likely just trying to stabilize himself.

From what I can tell, Bobbitt was an actual homeless veteran struggling with drug addiction, just as the Gofundme said. He was the one who was least at fault in the scam, and he was honestly getting ripped off since the couple stole most of the money. I think most people would still want to help out a homeless veteran, even if the story was made up. He's no longer homeless and is in a court-mandated drug program, so he's still managed to get his life on a better track so far.
I do have some sympathy for Bobbitt, being a homeless addict and suddenly people come to you and say they'll cut you a deal for 75k if you go along with their scam, that'd be a very tempting offer for someone who has absolutely nothing to loose at this point, still absolutely doesn't make it right or justified but I at least understand why he did it
I mean this did start because they wanted to help out the dude who is actually a homeless vet. It's always made me uncomfortable seeing gofundme's anymore. I refused to ever let one be started for me. I knew who was going to be starting it and didn't want that because she was only doing it for attention and sympathy for HER when I'm the one who has had to go through the surgeries and radiation and testing. There are so many people who don't know two years later I have been struggling through cancer because I've purposely kept it between my friends and family, but my grandmother just kept boo hooing and saying it was so hard on her and telling all her friends and even asked two bars around town if she could set up a fundraiser for me. They could, but it would have to be linked directly to me in all ways with my consent and she wasn't happy that I wouldn't do it after everything she was doing. No, you didn't ask me, you were doing it all behind my back and then claimed it would be a surprise to help with the medical bills when they need my consent and knowledge basically. So was it really that? She still tries to garner sympathy over anything she can. Smashed her toe and the nail might fall off? Take pictures and get as much sympathy as we can. My sister had her baby LESS THAN A WEEK AGO and doesn't want company until everyone gets settled in. Let's call her the c-word, selfish, bring politics into it, and anything she can because she's 'keeping her from her great grandchild'. So I straight up said I was closer related, have a better relationship with my sister (so good she wanted me there, but they only allow two people at the hospitals during birth), and still hadn't seen the baby yet. It's not out of spite, she wants to heal, have time with her small family, and THEN share the love. She still wouldn't grasp it. If I wasn't epileptic and sometimes needed a ride from her, I would have zero affiliation with her. Neither of my uncles or cousins do because she's so psychotic.
@JBT I've always said she's vain and a narcissist. My mom got into it with her not long ago and called her a narcissist. Best bet she posted how none of her kids or grandchildren loved her on social media after that one.
@@natashaunfiltered Old people always want to be the center of the family, they want things to revolve around them. I don't know why this is common among them. Ofcourse most grandparents are actually more loving and understanding and would rather sacrifice their comfort in order to see their family happy (mostly grand kids, but who could blame them, they are cute). If you really think she's toxic and narcissistic as you say. Then be it. From what you said, your parents or at least your mom is aware of this and has a rational mind set. That's really good. I'm not one to say 2nd chances but maybe something happened which makes her want to be in front of everything? Now it just sounds like I'm gaslighting you, idk anymore just stay strong.
@@icedtohfuu9555 She is all about image. She never saw my oldest nephew, never cared to or wanted to because she hates babies and didn't want to see him til he was walking and talking. Now she's calling my sister a c*nt because she wants to get settled in with my two week, almost 3 week old nephew and she's selfish for it apparently. She had a rough pregnancy all around and is still suffering from hemorrhaging after. And I won't get started on why my uncles don't talk to her. My one cousin hates her rightfully because she outright said in front of so much family that no one will ever love a smart woman.
Reminds me of a the “lost” hiker in Hawaii that claimed she got dazed and confused after meditating. The family started a go fund me and said the money would be given to whoever finds her. It raised around $15,000. Well since one of the family members “found” her they kept the money. Yeahhhhhh pretty sure it was a scam Edit: you can’t get lost in Hawaii. Especially Maui which is where this took place. Pick a direction and start walking. You’ll either find a road or a beach. You’re not lost anymore.
I remember not seeing bots in youtube comments but now ever since people started spamming comments in Instagram comment sections they are now everywhere and unavoidable.
A few months ago my mom died suddenly. My grandmother, who I was never really close with, started a GoFundMe “for me and my sister” without either of our knowledge. It raised almost $40,000 and we never saw a cent of it. My sister and I were both minors at the time, and since our mom was divorced, neighbors and family friends were concerned and saddened for us. And my grandma took advantage of that, claiming the money was for us.
Honestly, if I was Bobbitt and it came down to me spending another night without somewhere to sleep or scamming twenty thousand people for their loose change, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Guaranteed 80% of the donors got less than ten dollars back. Nobody who was a part of this was choosing between paying their rent and donating.
@@JameyMcQueen Went along with what? Telling people he was homeless and needed money? That was all true. The only lie was that those other two were taking a cut, which is entirely on them.
Both of them should have gotten five years. It annoys me when the justice system gives lighter sentences to women when they are just as culpable. The homeless man I am more understanding of. Being a drug addict and homeless, being promised a way out would make one easily manipulated.
Its sad that its hard to help people nowadays. Because most people Don't really know how to help so they end up giving money. And they just end up giving money to the wrong people.
i'd rather give money to fake scammers & real people rather than not give at all. it sucks but the best way to help is either on an individual basis (making care packages with toothbrushes & toothpaste, protein bars, socks, money, etc and passing them out to homeless people in your area) or through established local charities so you know your money is going to the people who need it. i'm thankful these scammers got punished, hopefully this is a lesson to anyone considering doing the same. i can't imagine doing something like that let alone bragging to my friends about it, you'd have to be beyond heartless
Don't let liars or scammers disuade you from wanting to help out others if that's what you want. Be an example for others to follow. It's like crowd mentality. When everyone individually doesn't want to lend a hand, no one ends up helping out, and the world is left off for worse.
@@soyboytroy148 I disagree. I only value results and I consider it far more selfish to throw away money in random directions, to random people, without having any understanding of what it gets used for or who receives it. As someone who's been homeless for years and knows other homeless people, this shit both pisses me off and saddens me. I don't really like to talk about my past, but I will say it's been extremely difficult. I've been in poverty my whole life and most of my extended family doesn't like me. And once I became homeless, it's only become more difficult. And it's the same with the other homeless people I've met. What I'm tryna get at is, homeless people have it rough. We were raised in horrible conditions, and were put in horrible conditions. We had no control over anything, and now we're stuck. We have hopes and dreams, but because of the situation we're in, we aren't able to chase them. And when we ask for help to get out of that situation, we get trashed or beat up. It's horrible to deal with. Everyone judges you and there's nothing you can do about it. So when someone offers you money, or starts this huge thing just for you, you feel doubtful but special. You feel like you finally have a chance at life. A chance to get back up on your feet and start a new beginning. But then something like that happens, and now you're fucked. The feeling when you trusted someone to help you, and they promise that they would, but then end up turning your back on you and leaving with everything you need...you're not only heartbroken, you lost everything you could've had. It's the worst feeling, and now it's hard to trust or accept help again. So you may think that these scams don't do a lot of harm, but they do. Especially when you say you're doing it for someone in need but you're really not. It's fucked up. Really fucked up. On a happy note though, I will soon not be homeless anymore! Finally got a house to live in and a program that will pay for it! We (my family and I) will be moving in sometime this week! (Just wanted to bring a little bit of positivity)
You stated you don't like to talk about your past yet your very first sentence says you *do* like to talk about yourself. You're human, it's what people do. They all feel their story is unique without understanding a million people have lived it.
@@TheINFJChannel I don't like to talk about what I've experienced *whilst* homeless, is what I meant. (And usually if I do talk about my experiences (before or during homelessness) I'm very vague about it). I don't mind sharing that I'm homeless because I'm able to spread awareness about it, but some things I prefer to keep to myself. And I do understand that many others have lived similar lives, but that doesn't change the fact that we homeless people go through horrible stuff, and using us to gain money for yourself and leaving us nothing is a horrible thing to do. And the fact that this *isn't* a unique experience is depressing. This shouldn't be a common problem, but it is. But, in a weird way, you can find comfort knowing your not alone when shitty stuff happens to you, because someone else is also experiencing that at the same time.

@Ian Visser bro if someone earned 400k dollars under the pretense that all that money was to be sent to me, yeah, i wouldn't exactly have liked that the money raised FOR ME was being used by the people who were supposed to send me the money and i got less then 1/4 of it. also, not all homeless people make bad decisions. fuck, "you don't just wake up one day and become homeless" you can wake up one day and SOMEONE ELSE can decide that you're now homeless. also yeah he sued them, HE HAS THE MONEY TO SUE THEM IN THE HOPES THAT HE GETS THE MONEY THAT ONE, HE DESERVES, AND TWO, HE *NEEDS*
The homeless guy didnt really deserve a harsh sentencing anyways, he was a homeless veteran who was desperate for money, he saw an opportunity and just went for it. Sometimes you are just so desperate that you lose sense of reality.
It’s so frustrating that scammers like this get so much on GoFundMe when so many people in legitimate need go unnoticed I’m glad they found out and the jail time, but the difference in sentences *reeks* of sexism. @Ian Visser it was a drug situation. I think daddy bailed him out on the condition of a nice rehab center. He was flailing to continue using drugs. The other guy that stayed with me was injecting meth. I needed a friend and felt bad for him so I shared my tent for a while, till an old school friend gave me a truck literally months before covid. That truck probably kept me alive cause even being antisocial, a sidewalk is a germ ridden place to live. A truck you can keep more sterile.

I actually think this deplorable story has an unintended good consequence, which is to make people more skeptical about these things. You *should* expect to be scammed, because it's what most often happens. Even your donations to some 'big' organisations end up going to someone else's pockets, and only about 5% to 15% of your money ends up going to a real cause. Some organisations will tell you that you're sponsoring a kid, but about 90% of your money will fund religious 'projects' that include financing political campaigns. Don't give away your money to organisations. If you give $1 to a homeless person, that's better than donating $5 per month to whatever charity you can hear about.

@@RBLXDignitysHQ how many times can we punch someone in there face: let's see
It's always made me uncomfortable seeing gofundme's anymore.

My sister and I were both minors at the time, and since our mom was divorced, neighbors and family friends were concerned and saddened for us. And my grandma took advantage of that, claiming the money was for us.

The intent is important. If we allow the existence of liars to cause us to give nothing, we are as selfish and sad as they are.
I see it as people trying to rid themselves of guilt [for not doing whatever or having whatever privileges] by convincing themselves and others that mindless consumerism - in the shape of donation funds - somehow is the missing solution.
@@admaanhason7410 I'm going to inject myself into this discussion and add to your side of the argument that money is just a means to an end. If lack of money is the issue, then more money is the solution. But then we have things such as deep-seated trauma, severe addiction, cognitive issues, or just straight up being a victim to the whims of our Universe - then money is just shit that can gets you other shit.
Happy that your life is turning around
I wish you the best, thank you for sharing.
congratulations to you and your family!
But, in a weird way, you can find comfort knowing your not alone when shitty stuff happens to you, because someone else is also experiencing that at the same time.
you know whats sad? they could have bought the guy an actual house with that money if it was actually legit, they coudlve bought him a house and couldve pocketed something for themselves and everyone wouldve been happy

Few years ago when I first became homeless in California a man that I met in a hostel found me in a park and did an interview with me and said he was going to make a GoFundMe to help me out.
Couple weeks later another guy from the hostel who was friends with him caught up with me and we started staying together just to have company, he disclosed that the GoFundMe was never meant for me the man who made the video and was going to make the GoFundMe was trying to get up a lot of money quickly to keep himself out of jail and they came and arrested him before he had a chance to make the GoFundMe.

I never heard from those guys again to know what happened to them
@Ian Visser I loved that truck.
A church he attended let me park it in back for nearly a year before my section 8 was finalized last year.
I thankfully stayed away from the drugs while on the streets.
I had my drug problems a few years back, got clean and won't go harder than marijuana now cause I know where the rest leads.
I struggle with a lot mentally so I'm not moving forward anyway with or without a drug problem.
It has definitely kept me from falling further down so far tho.

Public charities are actually more likely to launder money… I refuse to donate to charities, I only give money to individuals

If you give $1 to a homeless person, that's better than donating $5 per month to whatever charity you can hear about.

wow, the woman got 1 year and the male got 5 years. The system is broken
Men are likely to get a 3-5 times harsher sentence than a woman based on the same crime.
Lots of factors lead into this but it’s pretty interesting
I mean we didn't get the full picture here or seen the text messages so it could very well be that the main criminal was the guy but then again the system was always broken, splitting up gender roles and bias towards gender never did the world any good..
@@bottomtext251 If you use your brain you would see the possibility is higher that the woman being the ring leader is much higher than the man. Also, traditional gender roles did wonders for the world, but gender bias didn't do any god.

Try looking it up. The two of them faced multiple charges from both state and federal authorities, her year incarceration is from federal Court, however she's up for an additional four years in state prison which will be sentenced this September.
This took me 30 seconds to find
She cooperated with investigators so she got a reduced sentence
Because judges feel bad for women more, truthfully deep down everyone knows it's just natural to feel more empathy towards a female than a male, it's just human nature. Gender gap destroys every other discrepancy including race (6x greater.) She definitely will be released before him, but honestly it could have been SO much worse and in a lot of cases she would have gotten zero time.
I actually do remember this story very well. I remember how much it angered me. I thought the story had concluded with them being in court and convicted.
No one would have even known this was a scam and they would have gotten away with it if they had just given the “homeless” dude his promised portion of the money. He would have kept his mouth shut if the couple would have just been a tiny bit less greedy. It angered me even more I heard the sentence given to the woman.
