The Truth about Ancestral Worship

  • What is ancestral worship? Does it have real power or is it just superstition? We discuss African traditional religion and contrast it to faith in Christ.
In this podcast Blaque Nubon interviews David Kobedi on the truth behind ancestral worship.
    What is Ancestral Worship?
David grew up in a village near Rustenburg in the North West Province of South Africa. His family both attended church and practiced ancestral worship - venerating and consulting their relatives. This was not unusual. There is a deep cultural connection to the ancestors in David's family and local community - as there is in many communities across Africa. It is best understood as the traditional African worldview.
    Power & Superstition Combined
However, now a grown man and Pastor, David explains that although ancestral worship undoubtedly has power, it is also steeped in superstition. The system is based on fear and centred around man. The aim is to avert disaster - avoid family deaths, marital issues, sickness, poverty and discontent - putting man's needs and wants in the middle.
It's a very man-centred kind of dance. Because we are using those powers that we recognise. We are using them for our own benefit and to enhance our own agendas.
As a Christian David believes that God is the right person to go to for guidance - not the ancestors. He is, after all, the creator and controller of the universe. In addition, Christ through his resurrection defeated death - he was not defeated by it like our ancestors.
My beloved great grandfather, who is long dead, cannot be equally on the same level as Jesus. Because death defeated him whereas with Jesus he actually conquered death.
    Choosing the Kingdom of Light
The Christian worldview gives an antidote to fear and discontent. The Kingdom of Light puts God at the centre. For this reason we worship him and receive the peace that surpasses all understanding - based on our hope in Christ and eternal life. It is in this that we truly receive spiritual blessings.
"Christ has defeated sin through the cross and through the cross I see a new way of living. With my wife, in my family. That's the thing that gonna sustain me. So it's a mind shift. that understands the story of God and the story of his world and what he is doing in the world."

African traditional spirituality is getting popular with African Americans, Caribbeans, and Latinos. I was raised Christian went into yoga which led to Hinduism and other religions and ending in dabbling in various African traditional practices such as ancestor veneration, and having animal sacrifices done on my behalf, etc. I have returned to Christ. Please pray for me and my family as my husband is not supportive of this change.

23minutes in. Once again. You're all over the place. Praying to ancestors and asking them for help is not the same as worshipping/venerating them.
Worshipping is the act of obedience to some divine directive, to keep it clear. (Obey)

Just a question, why go to the creation that in itself battled with sin rather than go to the one who is king of kings, omniscient and omnipresent? Truly if you want to rooot yourself in a belief you shoukd first question it. If you want to know if ancestral worship is true, throw yourself at his (God's) feet and pray persistently with an open heart ready for any answer, and surely you will receive one.

@anele4246 your question of why go to creation vs go to Creator shows your western thinking. Creator/Ntr/God exists in all his creations. But youre trying to seperate the two. That thought is out of ignorance and fallacy. You do not understand the relationship between the two. Creation can NOT exist without God. He is the air we breathe. He is the food we eat. He is the flow of blood in our veins. He is our organs unconditionally doing what's best for us when we treat our bodies poorly.
Please study more and wrap your mind around what Im saying.
Thus God IS His Creation. WE NATURE ARE His Multiplicity, aspects, personalities, etc. You can not comprehend God as one but good luck trying. However we can see HIM through his things.
On the contrary believe has to be believed in for you to "think" it works. But you can never prove it works to a nonbeliever. Thus i focus on FACTS. Creator is in all things. FACT. There is no creation/Ntrw without God's(Ntr's) everpresent (past, present, future) participation in Sustaining it. Thus You interact with God through Self/Ntr and the multiplicity of God Nature/NTrw. Do some thinking on That. If you want more reference o. This topic, watch the documentary "Out of Darkness:Heavy Is the Crown". Its currently on youtube. 2 hours of lessons.

Hi, I hope your day has been going well.
My understanding of God, to be specific, the christain God of Abraham, Issac, Noah. The creator of the universe is that he is all omnipotent and omniscient. God has three parts: God the creator, Jesus God made man as a sacrifice, the Holy Spirit - God as a guide.
The reason I asked why go to the creation is because of who God is as a powerful being. He can do all. We do not need to create other mediums to build relationships with him because he already has as God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
We as a creation are not God, yet we do carry his gift, and he invites us to create a personal bond with him so that he dwells in our hearts and minds to guide our souls to eternal peace in heaven. We ourselves are not God and can nor will never be.
I genuinely want to understand your point of view. (I only saw the response now, hence the late response on my end)

Satan gives the spirit of fear he loves it when humans are living in fear, Jesus Christ gives the spirit of peace and love, the bible says when you know the Truth it shall set you free, Jesus saves, it not to late to surrender your life to him, he will never fail you. God created a diverse world... if he wanted us to all be the same then he would have started by creating the same type animal species and the same type of flowers, since he didn't, this then shows that there are somethings we don't understand [like if he was working then why are angles and the holy spirit helping him] . We should make it a norm to try and understand something before we place judgement [most of these things are misunderstood], no one said that ancestors are superior than God nor do they have powers, its societies norm to deem something they don't understand as something demonic when its not.

The God who created those animals has this to say about that:
There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or daughter pass through the fire [as a sacrifice], one who uses divination and fortune-telling, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a charm or spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or a necromancer [who seeks the dead]. For everyone who does these things is utterly repulsive to the Lord ; and because of these detestable practices the Lord your God is driving them out before you. You shall be blameless (complete, perfect) before the Lord your God. For these nations which you shall dispossess listen to those who practice witchcraft and to diviners and fortune-tellers, but as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you to do so.

These familiar spirits that rule Africans and other cultures has been the bondage for many and their destines which are never achieved because they are caught in the cycle of making sacrifices to beings, deities, other gods and kingdoms like the water kingdom instead of trusting in the creator God who created all.
Sadly many Africans believe ancestral worship is part of the culture and continue to be trapped into talking to idols and unknown spirits that pose as their loved ones. Necromancy has been a set back for the continent and many have lost lives with these covenants knowingly and unknowingly from family bloodlines while these same familiar spirits that have attached to bloodlines and families to create the same problems that most seek to resolve as a never ending cycle strive since they have long been monitoring the bloodlines.
From the days of our ancestors who lived before us who did not know any better these beings have attached to families as agents of confusion yet we are here as future generations to be more wise and advance from these bondages called culture and break generational curses.
These spirits have become smart over the centuries to use bodies to keep them living as lost wondering spirits with no vehicle or body and so choosing bodies to live in and possess on this Earth from the spirit world to create chaos is how they thrive and we continue to have problems of abuse in families, early death, unknown sicknesses, poverty, witchcraft, resentment, rage, anger, jealousy, fear, suspicion, loneliness, never reaching destinies, infertility, divorce, violence, addictions, alcoholism, promiscuity and so forth where many forsake the kingdom of God for these spirits posing as loved ones or other kingdoms like the marine kingdom that likes to attach to families of beautiful women, handsome men, influential people or those with prophetic and artistic gifts for one to praise this kingdom for these gifts as if it’s from these mermaids when it’s all from God.
Divination has been such an accepted practice in African cultures accepting and opening up to other portals that create all this turmoil and principalities in our nations believing we can take the place of God along with these unknown spirits that need these people as vehicles to have a voice and compete with the kingdom of heaven who also just rule in nothing but fear and manipulation.
Only God can resolve and fix everything as your creator in heaven for he created all good and bad. He does not need any sacrifices and rituals other than your faith, belief, prayer and true intentions.
Christianity is not from the coloniser but it was tampered with for the interests of colonisation yet Africans since ancient times have had the oldest form of Christianity in Ethiopia and beyond.
The more our people identify with communicating with the dead who are no longer here as a source if help the deeper the bondage and chaos.

Hi there. as a person who understands scripture i have come across many preachers who compensate their inability to preach the bible by throwing insults at other religions. this is the reason why people will never completely choose Jesus. there are so many people in church who don't completely believe in Christianity , they just go to church because those who preach do not preach the bible they tell terrifying stories about other religions in attempt to get people to fill up churches( that is you). Many people join Christianity because they fear social exclusion. one fundamental principle of our creator is truth , if you are going to explain something to people explain it using the truth and all of it. not a certain narrative about it. people who believe in ancestry have every right to do so . no one has the right to tell them they are wrong and judge them for it. the same way no one has a right to tell those who believe in Jesus that they are wrong . lets not be hypocrites when preaching. In defence of African spirituality , they do not worship ancestors and your definition will not change that, but for some reason Christians keep making African culture and spirituality as an example of those who worship the dead. it is important that that we preach what we know. if you don't know it don't teach about it. we must not forget, it is because of the lack of understanding and misinterpretation of scripture that lead Christians in particular to kill and enslave in the name of Christianity. Christianity is not god it is a means to God. like any other religion . God is not religion and we can under no circumstances diminish our creator to that. Every human being met God at the stage of creation. before any religion was introduced.
also as in every religion and spirituality , there are those who got the fundamentals of the religion wrong...wrong end of the stick , like you did when you grew up. and it will be foolish of you to preach things that you did not research on. and it seems like you are getting it wrong with Christian scripture as well.
and one more thing . African spirituality is not witchcraft it is far from it ...and incomparable. talk like this have gotten people killed and burned to death .
preach the bible, don't compare it to other religions or spirituality . stop mentioning other religions in an effort to interpret the bible. stick to scripture and apply the principles when preaching. You talk of African spirituality and base it on superstition , my beloved brothers if you take faith out ,logic will tell you the bible is a book of based on mythology . Lets not dictate issues of faith with underhanded tactics. A connection to God is sacret, it is beyond personal. do not attempt to adjust the faith people have in god to satisfy your urge for uniformity.

I'm lost in that line about 'ancestral worship' because of fear. Worship is an English term that I don't identify with when it comes to our spirituality.

As an African American who's history has been robbed and hidden from my educational experience and who has been fed Christianity all of my life, it saddens me to say that this is an insult to the ancestors. These two brothers hurt my heart bc they are blessed to have had an education in ancestor worship at some time in their youth. I wish I had what they're trying to forget. So sad...

No living human has seen God. All organized religions are ancestral worshipping. Buddha was a real human. And worshippers of Buddha are ancestral worshippers. Those who invoke "in the name of Jesus"are worshipping dead ancestor. Worshippers of Mohammed are ancestral worshippers. So do Hindus. Every religion is ancestral worshipping. African ancestral worship is not idolism or idolatry as is any religion.

To say Jesus conquered dead via resurrection is grounded on the knowledge of accepting and convinced there was a historical Jesus. When one accepts, one is responsible. If Jesus resurrected it means there is social as well as spiritual and religious Jesus. Jesus was rebellious against material and political and judicial worlds, even he admonished Christians to give Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's. The conflict in relating to gods and humans persist.
If Christians claim continuous relationships and communications with Christ, who has ever seen Christ? And what did Christ speak to him or her about evils and man's inhumanity to fellow humans, about poverty and inequality in wealth acquisitions and distributions in the world?
It is a war of minds in every religion.

@@solomonobotetukudo4362 You are Somewhat Mistaken my Brother. You've made some good Points but you are Far Off on a Few. First of All: Jesus is the Son of God and God Manifest in Flesh who DID Conquer Death as Witnessed by about 120 People, not 1, but 120! (Acts 1). First of All we Cannot even start to Claim that 120 people can have a Shared Hallucination.
Secondly the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that we believe Today and in generations Past to be the One True God IS the Creator of the Universe who made Himself Known to One Faithful Person (Abraham) and thus promised to Bless his Descendants, of whom Jesus comes from (Hebrews 1-2, Numbers 12:7).
If we Start to Dispute that Jesus was not even a Real Person, then we will have to Dispute that Caesar Augustus Did Not Live and Die in AD 14 (which we don't, or at least History books don't) or Dispute that Socrates did not Exist in 470-399 bc (which we Fervently Do Not, or at least Philosophy books don't).
The Historical Accuracy and Thorough Documentation and Preservation of Jesus's Existence, Death and Resurrection FAR outweighs the documentation and preservation of All of the People you have Mentioned Including Socrates! Mohammed was only written about 150 years after his death. Jesus's First written Document only 30-40 years after His Resurrection (WITHIN that same Generation that knew Him- The Gospels of Mark and Matthew).
Budda? Originated in India sometime between 6th and 4th Century BCE, and many of their Tenets Sounds EXACTLY like the Biblical Teachings we know, except Buddhists Don't even believe in any Creator, or Supreme God or Deity, they believe in Humanistic Manifestations and achievements of Self- Enlightenment through Meditation. Essentially it is a harmless way of Life. In this Same time-period was the Babylonian Empire Rule under Nebuchadnezzar ii who had Captured the Jews in 586bc and lead to the Exile of the Jews (Therefore, it is Clear that Belief in the God of Abraham and the Abrahamic Covenant Preceeded even Buddhism).
But Jesus Did Say He "Is the Way, the Truth and the Life" (John 14:6-14) And Those who Followed Him and Even Demonic beings made Several References of Jesus as being the Son of God and as One with God (Luke 4:41; Mark 3:11; John 1:1-34; Isaiah 42:1; John 11:27; Matthew 3:17; Matthew 4:1-11). Which was Definitely Proven with His Death and Resurrection as a Sign to the Jews of that time (that they were Asking for and waiting for a Sign) and as a Sign to the Rest of the World, as He would "Be a Blessing to All Nations" (Genesis 22:18; Galatians 3:1-9)
So, it's Each and Every Persons CHOICE, as Adam & Eve were similarly given Choice, to Obey, and Believe first of All that There is a God who created the Universe and that we do not come from Slime (Evolutionary tenet). 2. God had a plan for ALL Nations and All of Humanity to be Saved through the Life and Sacrifice of His One and Only Son (John 3:16; Hebrews 1-3; 1 John 4:10) from the Lineage of Abraham, who Heard and obeyed the Voice of God.
      3. Those who do not Believe or Accept this Gift from God WILL Stand Judged in the End (Hebrews 3, Psalm 95:7-11; Psalm 95:7-8). 4. All other Major World Religions are either a Copycat of Abrahamic Lineage Teachings which started as Early as 1500 Bce in the Bronze Age, or Jesus's Teachings from AD30 onwards or a downright Deception by the Father of Lies and Adversary of God, Satan from the Beginning of Time (John 8:44).
If you Research for yourself Similarities from All world Religions you will See Similar Symbolism's in each One, From Egyptian Pagan Religion to Hinduism/Eastern Religions to Germanic Tribe/European Paganism and African/Chinese/Japanese/Native Indian Ancestral Worship, there is ALWAYS a Snake, Sun worship, Swastika and Fertility figures. So you can ask yourself...Who is Influencing All of these Non-Theistic Religions and Spiritisms?? Is it Not perhaps the One who Said "I will Be Like God" in the first place and the Adversary of the One and Only True God?? (Isaiah 14:14).
      You Decide...

So these whitewashed pseudo intellectuals like to strongly support the notion that thousands of years of African ancestors were blind fools. The ancestors were far more sophisticated in their worship. There is but One God who is the bestower of power and grace to whom He/She pleases. The ancestors were well aware of that. The ancestors spiritual essence is with The One and Only God, and is undying and should be appreciated and respected. The kingdom of God was in them as well as, the current living humans. Without that spiritual essence, all of us are lifeless. The ancestors' spiritual essence lives. As humans, some of us are foolish to assume that we know (with our limited minds) all the ways The Most High has manifest and bestows His power, and for what purposes, especially throughout all of time. Stop beating up on the ancestors legacy with disgusting shows of unappreciation and disrespectful portrayals.

Your Lord is ONE , none has the right to be worshipped accept HE. With your sins, not seeking forgiveness and dwelling in things he has forbidden, he has mislead you, fire surrounds them, we send devils to live with them to lead them further astary until the appointed time. All your sins and good deeds are recorded by the Angels, you were not created in play.

You are right - we don't understand everything about the universe - we are not God! It is also wrong to judge others. However, as Christians we believe that the only way to God is through Jesus - and we want to share this with people because we care about them.

exactly. If Christianity was the only way, all our ancestors would be in Hell burning, and that's not fair to our ancestors, esp. when we say God is a loving and just God. But I mean, it's the message that White people would want to perpetuate to us. They wanted us to have complete dependence on them and not our ancestors because they knew that history gives power to the people.

There aren't many ways to God, I've tried other "ways" and I can tell you I regret it. Nothing but deception of the Enemy on the whole world. People will do what they want and think they know what they're doing, but everything has consequences. *Jesus Christ* is the way, the truth and the life. No one goes to Father except through Him. He alone is LORD!
