AT LAST! AT LAST! AT LAST! Have no idea how many times I've listened to this - even called my house after it - but still shed a tear along with Lex there! Bless her! I was hoping that one day you might both do a Marathon of Ritchie's solos from Purple, Rainbow & Blackmore's Night, as I guessed this would be the reaction we would get. I lost my best friend before he was 40 and this was the 2nd one of the songs we played at his funeral, specifically because of that ending. But for even more emotions, the first one we had played was "Maybe Next Time" which also has a German name. There's always discussions about which singer was the best - but with him making that Strat sing like that - who cares! Keep 'em coming good people!

By the way Nick - to me the finest live track of all time is "Catch the Rainbow" off of On Stage (15:34!) and I usually couldn't suggest anything better anyway, but at the start you'll hear Ritchie playing your Bach piece on his Strat!

I think this track dates from 1979. It might have been the B-side of a single. I think Weiss Heim was the name of Ritchie's house in New York at the time but he's joked about his imperfect German. He didn't record many instrumentals, which I'm personally glad about, but the ones he did record are all very good. The live version of Difficult to Cure (Beethoven's 9th) from Finyl Vinyl is well worth listening to. It amazed me the first time I heard it.

Hi Guys, Richie Blackmore was the very 1st rock guitarist I really heard when a friend got the albUm "Fireball" by Deep Purple for his birthday and played the entire album with me there. I had never heard anything like it. Richie was amazing on that album and is still one of my Deep Purple favourite studio albums. I followed Deep Purple from then on, and when Richie formed Rainbow I never knew about it ... until browsing through the vinyl records in a store. I saw "Rainbow Rising" and immediately bought it. I never knew there was another > Debut album. It was a while before that one was seen in the record rack. It's a much more laid back beautiful album with the now classic "Catch the Rainbow" ...Now there is a stunningly beautiful track ... and Dio is incredible ...and then he does it live and Omg ! Dio & Richie both on fire ! "Catch The Rainbow" will have you in tears. Richies playing is truly beautiful....Then along came Blackmore's Night...with his wife Candice Night on vocals....Richie used her on a Rainbow track "Ariel" [ Pronounced Ar ee ell and not Air ee ell ] from the album "Stranger in us all " It is also my favourite track. It is sooo good and to have Candice singing on the fade out works beautifully. I have all Blackmore's Night albums and 2 dvds of live concerts.Wonderful stuff. Last year they re-released "Shadows of the Moon" 25th Anniversary Edition remastered including remastered cover art and excellent packaging with 2 discs > 1 cd - 1 dvd. Their music videos are brilliant still today. Love this reaction and such a great choice of track. Byee Jim X

@@raiderfan346 Hi Raider ! Good to see you. I was lucky with friends who knew more than me at the time. I was a massive T.Rex fan and of course The Beatles and whatever was in the singles charts. My 1st album was The Moody Blues "For your children's children's children" aged 13 for my birthday, thanks to a friend who played me the album, but Deep Purple with Richie & Ian just blew me away. Love the album "Fireball" still I play loud on headphones all these decades later. Richie is still my favourite rock guitarist and Dave Gilmore a close 2nd. I saw Rainbow live with Dio twice and Pink Floyd Lapse of Reason tour. Hope you are are well to Raider. Cheers !!!

This is a piece I've known since "Finyl Vinyl" was released which I bought on Lp. As you know Nick I'm a HUGE 𝕽𝖆𝖎𝖓𝖇𝖔𝖜 fan, so I have a small collection that grows about each year or 2. All his instrumentals, that are few, are very soulful like this when you'd think he'd bust out like he did with Deep Purple or Live with 𝕽𝖆𝖎𝖓𝖇𝖔𝖜 (either with "Dee-Oh", or Graham Bonnet, as he does for the 1st "Monsters of Rock" Festival at Castle Donington England 1980, which is what got me into Rainbow. Blackmore does an INSANE "sound effects solo" _into_ Beethoven's 9th, which he later does as a studio rendition).
Finyl Vinyl is a compilation after Blackmore dissolved the band (he did 1 more about a decade later, but it just wasn't the same anymore), but I was disappointed that there wasn't more Dio & Bonnet Live, especially for the time it was printed, there wasn't much more Live material released on Lp of their years with the band, I had only seen a highly edited version of the Monsters of Rock concert on a local LA video/concert show called "Rock World", and that is when I became a very late Rainbow fan.
"Don Airey" was the keyboardist for 2 albums, he joined Rainbow with Graham for "Down to Earth", and the following album (with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals). He, decades later replaced Jon Lord in Deep Purple after he passed on.
    To checkout more instrumentals:
*Still I'm Sad* (a "Yardbird's" song without the lyrics, Blackmore arranges the song differently and more lively) The live version on "On Stage" and "Live in Munich 1977" are done with the lyrics and Dio giving it MUCH more life than the original, that is "25 minutes long", so a lot of jamming goes into that version.
*Vielleicht Das Nächste Mal (Maybe Next Time)* which is a gorgeous track.
*Difficult to Cure (Beethoven's 9th)* both are from the "Difficult to Cure" album. He also does it live with a Symphony in Tokyo.
*Snowman* (which is a Classical Howard Blake piece _Walking in the Air_ that Blackmore arranges slightly different) The original piece was made more famous in the really beautiful animated Christmas special "The Snowman" (adapted from a wordless children's book with illustrations). In its second run, it was introduced by David Bowie.
Blackmore's version is different but a gorgeous piece, the original "Walking in the Air" was performed by St Paul's Cathedral choirboy "Peter Auty" which is stunning.
Nightwish with "Tarja" also did a version, and I believe with Floor Jensen.
I get why Lexi got emotional, "Maybe Next Time" does that to me at times, Blackmore is a VERY expressive player along with the beautifully ferocious side that is let loose live back in his hey day. I think Blackmore has a style all his own, but he brings out the best in his Fender Stratocasters, he makes it HIS guitar, and he knows how to make it cry, weep and sound like a monster being let out of its cage!
Thank you Narvik and welcome back. Very moving reaction guys! GO! . . . enjoy those CD's!!! :D I HOPE "Candice Night" reaches out to you guys!

Awesome suggestion, Narvik! It's probably been 25 years since I've heard this piece. I used to have it on the Jealous Lover vinyl EP (and Finyl Vinyl ).
Finyl Vinyl was a live album which included a couple of b-sides which didn't appear on any of Rainbow's regular releases (Bad Girl, Jealous Lover and Weiss Heim). The title initially seemed to indicate that Rainbow was over and Blackmore was moving on. Deep Purple Mark II reunited and toured, and eventually Blackmore left again and reformed Rainbow in the mid-nineties.

I love it. I love Ritchie Blackmore, he's the best imo. And l loved the reaction from both of you & it was really cool to see Lex's first experience to Rainbow.
Rainbow has a few instrumentals Nick.
On the Difficult To Cure album there's two that you would love. Vielleicht Das Nachste Mal ( Maybe Next Time). And the title track Difficult To Cure ( Beethoven's Ninth). There's actually a live video of Rainbow doing this from Japan with a sympathy orchestra.
There's two on Bent Out Of Shape album. Anybody There & Snowman.
And on their first album Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, they do an instrumental cover of the Yardbirds Still I'm Sad.
I seen Ritchie twice with Deep Purple, I think it's ten times with Rainbow & twice with Blackmore's Night.
I'd love to see you & Lex react to Catch The Rainbow from the first album. It's with Dio on vocals & the song is just beautiful. It might bring Lex to tears again.

The difference between Blackmore and other players is the fact that Blackmore can play all their styles but the compliment cannot be returned. That’s what makes RB special.

Rainbow best line up with Dio on vocal epic. With Bonnet and Turner good album but much radio friendly.

C'mon Narvik. You didn't request the live version. WTF. Maybe Nick will do the live version, now that he's heard the studio version. RAINBOW ON STAGE LIVE. One of my all time favorite live albums. Behind STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT by UFO.

Apparently Blackmore had a home that he adored (possibly in Germany near Munich) and was known to him and his German ex-wife as "The White house".

You're right, it does sound oriental. Maybe should've had an oriental title.
