First Light - EAA with Celestron Origin Home Observatory - Multiple Targets FAST

  • In this video, I get the opportunity to use the Celestron Origin home observatory and capture first light with EAA (Short Exposures). This is NOT intended to be a test of the advanced settings of the equipment.

    I could not believe how easy Origin was to set up and get imaging. The whole setup took me no more than fifteen minutes, and once hooked up to the WiFi the telescope takes less than three minutes to start up and initialize, focus and plate solve its starting position. From there, you simply choose your first object to image through the tonight’s best list, search menu, or interactive sky map.
    This has fundamentally changed my personal expectations of astrophotography. The easy of use and time that I save will now allow me to image more nights than I have ever felt were possible, and has opened up the possibilities for more people to experience our amazing hobby of amateur astronomy.
    Note: The images shown in this video represent short snapshots of the objects, and by no means represents the full capabilities of Origin. I purposefully wanted to bounce around and check out a bunch of objects. Most stacks averaged around 10 minutes or so. See exact times in the video.

    Being able to schedule shots while you sleep was so cool. I've spent the last 2 weeks trying to find a reason not to buy this scope, but all I've found was more reasons to buy the scope lol.

    The Orion shot you got was beautiful. My favorite sequence was you saying you never had a shot of the Horsehead Nebula, you wake up next morning and boom- you now own your own shot of the Horsehead Nebula. 👍

      Yes, exactly. None of these are long integration times. If you look many of them are 10 minutes. Once more time is spent on an object it will be incredible. I plan to do that in the near future.

    I have the EVScope 2 and I’m obtaining similar results in a city polluted sky’s because the EV includes a very nice filter, but, in any case, good review, nice telescope, congrats for your work.

    I see this first light as just a quick test and nothing to get discouraged about. I am looking forward to seeing images with at least 1 hour of total integration time and some serious post processing.

    Thanks! It was great to see it in operation. Seems to me the initial images aren’t stretched as far as the Vespera II does; instead of giving you an instant noisy image it stacks and lets the image build. That’s fine with me, but a different approach. I think you showed us shifting targets just by dragging and clicking, right? That’s a big improvement over Vespera’s system of going to the catalog or coordinates each time. Looking forward to more!

      Yes, you can just click through the map and slew or you can do a search or you can do “tonight’s best”. It is “Powered by Sky Safari” so it has a lot of well known controls if you already use Sky Safari.

    I like that you can put it on to an equatorial wedge designed for Evolution mount to do longer exposures without field rotation ( don't know whether that is implemented at launch)

    I think the Ipad screen is better compared to the TV one. Maybe will look better on say an OLED TV since the blacks on those screens are real blacks and not dimmed LED light.
    Either way that is really looking great.
    As the years go by, it will only get better.
    i.e. Bigger and better scopes, with bigger and better camera sensors.
    if Celestron actually make it so that one can upgrade the Origin's camera for a better one. Is a step up and a game changer.
    I got the Seestar S50 now, the only issue now is that it came with clouds and its been raining for a week after getting her here in Wales.
    nice video as always, really nice bit of kit right there. It is pricey but I think it is "top dog" right now and beats the competition.
    I think there has to be a pelican briefcase made for it with styro inside for storage+travelling.

      It is an OLED TV. Part of it is the camera capturing the TV poorly, as it wasn’t something I expected to have issues with, and part of it is my iPad airplay quality wasn’t the best. The quality on the TV is not representative of the scope. The image on the iPad screen from Origin is the real image from the scope.

    Are you able to make adjustment while the image is live stacking? For example bring the brightnes down and increase constast and then every next image that gets added to the stack takes that into account? Are the adjustment only posible when you want to save the image?

      If you watch the podcast or my interview at NEAF they said that they made sure that they allowed for upgrades in the future when designing the Origin, but they don’t have anything they are “able to share at the moment”. That’s not a “no”. 🤞

      It is not intended to change the sensor or the camera with other cameras. Celestron will bring special upgrade cameras for the origin but others than these are not capable.

      @@ZannMusicCom most of the cameras on the market are using the same set of sensors. In the podcast Corey Lee, CEO, and Eric Kopit - Innovation Specialist (the founders of this telescope concept) said they intend for it to be possible to get upgrades, but they cannot discuss any details at this time.

    What is about collimation? These RASAs are pretty delicate to handle and collimation should be bang on to prevent the odd starshapes we have seen. Unistellar had this in the eVScope and eQuinox (not in the newer Odyssey line anymore). Seems to be too difficult for beginners and people that are not used to reflectors. It may work for an f/4 or f/5 scope, but usually not for an f/2.2.
    Does it allow calibration frames and are they used during live stacking? Are the single exposures saved somewhere so that advanced users can process them on their own? To be honest, the image quality does not justify the 4k price tag yet (even 5k Euro in Germany). It is extremly fast, so you can walk through a lot of targets in a short time like showing things to kids or students, but for astrophotography the quality does not seem right atm. But this is most likely a prepoduction model and also the software and firmware will get updates. We've seen that with all the other smart telecopes out there. At least it is good to see that also the traditional telescope companies are slowly see this as a market. More if these scopes will help to get better instruments over time.

      Built in tilt plate just below the filter drawer should do what you mentioned with respect to collimation as it replaces the need for a secondary. You can choose the exposure and it does output FITS (RAW) files so there should be no reason you a more advanced manual calibration and post processing isn’t possible. These are all VERY short exposures. I plan to do a deep imaging where I will keep it on a single object all night in an upcoming video. I may also do some manual calibration and stacking to compare.

    The Horsehead seems to be unfocused, Alnitak has this strong halo around. Do we have to focus the scope manually with a Bahtinov mask or does the scope have automatic focus?

      I don't think he refocused. It automatically focuses but you should be able to tweak it. Also, this is without a filter I believe which crisps up the Horsehead.

      I just was checking something and noticed my camera was not totally threaded on. At f2.2 that makes a difference. I plan to get out and do some more imaging (deeper this time) on a single object. Stay tuned.

      @@CosmosSafariyes at F2.2, the back-focus distance to the sensor is really important and it being off by just a little can degrade the image. Also targets very near the horizon will be degraded by all the extra atmosphere. For your next video, be sure to pick targets higher up and make sure that sensor is all the way threaded on.     The promos and first looks for the Origin talk about the ability to download the 'raw images' for separate stacking and processing. Are the downloaded files in a fit format? I have not seen that explicitly stated.

    Smart telescopes is the future and we will see them in every price segment. Will be really interesting to see larger and more modular telescopes evolve for those willing to pay for what they want. If not willing to pay stick to the tiny ones. To me a larger modular smart unit will be a dream come true and my wallet will bleed - but hey, why get something I do not want just to save a few pennies... 😊

      I agree modularity is what is missing, I have an Evscope and can’t upgrade it so I have to throw the baby with the bath water and this will delay a lot any changes. Origin solves this partially, but more is needed.
      Others will be happy with a small portable all-in-one.

    Thank you for the review. How did you manage to rotate the field of view of nebula B434? Did you wait 7 hours for the Earth's rotation to rotate the field of view?

      It is happening live over a few seconds when slewing to an object. Not sure how.

    It’s pretty cool to Celestron do a take on these smart telescopes, I have the Vespera but I still think even for $4k it’s expensive

      I haven’t tried the Vespera so I cannot do a comparison. What I do know is I truly do like the Origin and plan to show some of the “advanced settings” and “advanced workflows” for the traditional astrophotographer who likes to tinker a bit. There is still plenty of room for that with Origin.

    Looks nice but my Seestar seems to capture images of equal quality. I do like all the bells and whistles that come with the Celestron but oh that price. Yikes. Maybe next year.

      Yeah, these are all super short exposures. Once I put some time on target I am fairly sure it will be clear what 6” f/2.2 optics makes possible. You cannot get around physics.

      I take a lot of Seestar images and it was immediately obvious that the galaxies in Markerians chaIn image are showing a lot more detail than my Seestar

    I think the issue is the camera being used by Celestron. If they updated it, then the images would be much better. Now it’s hard to justify over a Seestar for the fraction of the price.

      They did some substantial updates since this video to the AI image processing. I have seen a marked increase in sharpness in the past few months.

      Got a short clip with both at the end of the video I believe. They are both very short exposures. Nothing “Deep” at this point.

    I ordered on of these when they were first announces and can't wait to get it. I've never done astrophotography because it seemed like too much work. Dark frames, light frames, dithering, etc., etc.. This looks like they key for me, not to mention that for the 6 months of summer here South of Houston, I couldn't go out. Mosquitos, humidity, heat, was just too much. This will fix all of that. Thank-you Celestron.

    I thought this telescope is working with some kind of AI. In the picture of the horse head nebula you can see the shadow of the camera cable on the left side at this bright and huge star. Isn't the AI able to remove this?
    I have the same problem with my 8" RASA but thought really this problem should be solved by this "intelligent" telescope.

      I am listening. Noted and will communicate this to Celestron. I do want to point out that two more firmware updates have occurred since I had these images, they are rapidly making improvements. One of them I know was a big jump in imaging processing. I will also do another test once I get clear skies again.

    i'm sorry but for 4k it better give out of the box, 'wow' pictures. It does seem that, that is what they have given everyone.Do you have to have wi-fi/internet or does it connect and allow you to run it off of your ipad like the seestar S50?

      I can direct connect or go through my home WiFi. If you go through home WiFi it allows you to be anywhere on the network, and connect to it from iPad, iPhone, pc, Mac, or Android devices. These images are all very very short EAA style images.

    Seems awfully slow for EAA. My little Seestar had M42 as bright after a couple of 10 second subs. And the Horsehead much quicker. TO say nothing of much better views of globulars.

      This is partly my fault for not being more clear. I had a nebula filter in for these so the "speed' was significantly reduced as a result.

    It looks interesting, but star shapes (totally bloated, especially bright ones) are poor. Especially for that price. If it would be for about 1000-1500 USD gear it would be ok, but for 4000 USD you can build much better rig

      The data is there, it is all about the editing. If you don’t like the automatic edit than you are able to stack it yourself. It creates FITS files. The AI image processing will improve over time as well.

      @@CosmosSafari editing can't improve poor optics. I can build a rig on EQ mount with Samyang 135mm F2 for a fraction of that smart celestron scope... and stars will be looking better

    Does nothing that the Seestar 50 cannot achieve for a fraction of the price in my opinion. Also, the amp glow will limit the deep space objects that can be successfully imaged. Seems to me like another Celestron elitist product. They will of course wheel out all their "experts" to convince us all that this is the best thing to happen to astrophotography. Give it to some real people to test, then we'll see.

      Yes it's overpriced for about 50% IMO. If it would be on EQ mount, that would be different story, but on ALT AZ you're limited to about 30-40s of exposure. Also refractors show much better star shapes than this thing

      SeeStar cannot be so sensitive. Field of view of SeeStar is narrow. I have seen side-by-side these both products. The same object, 1h integration. SeeStar is nothing compare to this scope.
      Bottom line, they are both EAA, but not astrophotography. Celestron is better.

      @@anata5127 Field of view of the Seestar is almost identical to the Origin. Seestar is 0.72°x1.27°, the Origin is 0.85°x1.27°. And a 12 minute image of M42 on my Seestar is a lot better than the 39 minute image from the Origin in this video.

      The image taken in the video was a 5 minute stack. I am sure if I let it sit for longer you may have a more clear understanding of how crazy fast this thing is. Stay tuned, and next time I don’t have clouds (not in my forecast right now) I will do a longer exposure on horse head just for you.

    This is impressively bad, especially given the price. Im not a fan of smart telescopes in the first place, but I cant imagine why anybody would want to pay 8 times the price of a Seestar to get a scope that has significantly more setup, seemingly bad hardware, worse optics, and such a tiny sensor. That amount of money can get an incredibly capable mono rig with very good optics... or it can get you a soft, noisy, and completely locked down system with no room for upgrades. I really do hope this thing falls flat on its face so nobody buys it.

      This scope is definitely not hardware or optically limited. I can tell you that first hand there is nothing poorly executed here. Most of these images are extremely short EAA style exposures, some of which are only a few minutes. I hope to do a deeper image and dedicate a night or a few to see what it looks like to try to “go deep”. As far as the software, it is completely intuitive. It’s a pretty slick setup, and is built to allow for camera upgrades. Stay tuned.

      @@CosmosSafari But the M42 image you captured was nearly 40 minutes of integration, and looked really poor in comparison with Seestar images of much shorter integration time.
