      @@MarkRosasco-fi9tj Colbert was hosting Paul Simon on Colbert’s show and Colbert was graciously and generously hosting Paul Simon in a special format that honored and respected Paul Simon as the supreme artist that he is. The choice to have Paul Simon as a guest on Colbert’s show and to honor him in this way was Colbert’s choice and it was not a right to which Paul Simon’s artistry or legend entitles him.
      As for who needs who, we all need each other. In this case, we need to hear the wisdom and artistry of Paul Simon; Paul Simon needs us, his audience, to hear and appreciate the beauty of his talent; and both Paul Simon and we, the audience, need Colbert to make this platform available for such sublime artistry to be expressed and appreciated. There is no “need” among these three aspects that is superior to the other, as the beautiful experience that was witnessed in this video would not have existed without any one of the three aspects missing. Like three legs on a stool, we all need each other for the stool to be strong and provide support.

    Unlike many of Paul's contemporaries who elicit cringes when performing he is still a delight to listen to. Great guitar playing, voice in pitch with a seasoned vibrato, slight falter at the end, he is still as viable an artist now as he was 50+ years ago. Love Paul Simon. Thank you SC from SC for letting the appearance be about him and not you until he asked you a question. This had better be on your highlight reel when its all over.

    Paul Simon's brilliance as a performer, writer, musician has always been mesmerizing. What a treasure to have had for all these years of my life. I hope you've found the same to be true for you too. It's almost impossible to describe the gravity and beauty of his performances over his lifetime, up to, and including today.

    "She looks back to tell me she's gone, as if I didn't know that, as if I didn't know my own bed" Mr Simon is a treasure and his last three recent albums have been some of his best work. His conversational, comforting voice works it's it way through my armor and always leaves me a mess.

      On the basis of this clip, there’s no case for “timely retirement” by Paul Simon. I’m still under the spell of this song! It was masterfully presented, and he still has new things to say.

    • @alvideor
      @alvideor 6 месяцев назад

      Don't get me wrong, I admire Paul Simon. But this song sounds like the cry of someone who can't accept that his time has passed. It's a dark lament, it lacks the lively optimism in the midst of sadness that used to be his trademark. The same goes for other bygone superstars who keep going into old age, like Mick Jagger, Bono, Bowie, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Leonard Cohen. Sure they're still popular and there's money to be made. But sadly I don't hear them saying much that is relevant to the present generation dealing with our current problems. A good artist should know when their time has passed and take a step back. Have strength to accept fate that we all come and go, even the most brilliant of us. Then maybe get involved in other ways. Roger Waters is a good example. His voice for justice and peace is inspiring, timely and very necessary.

    Correct me if I’m wrong but this sounds like Sting or better yet something he would sing. This is not a critic, just an observation
