First of all, I'd like to thank you for making this video. It is a lot to unpack (in which I respect you for doing) and once I saw it was a full album reaction, I stopped what I was doing, cracked a bottle of wine and watched the full video in full with no cell phone in hand. I watched every since minute of the video. I play guitar in Inferi as well as some backing vocals and some lyric writing. I respect your analysis. You actually covered an instrumental song of ours a few years ago that was a re-recording of a 2008 album, so I was familiar with your channel. I personally appreciate the time you spent on this and seeing someone else absorb the music in almost real time is an experience that is few and far between as an artist. It was a treat, as it brought me great joy and invigoration as we work on our new album That being said I tried to keep a mental note of some questions or thoughts. Most of it is written is 3/4 with the vibe of 12/8 however, the goal for me is for it to feel interchangeable with 4/4 hence the 12/8. Movement and flow is very important to me as a musician and for some reason that vibe is my calling most of the time. It just feels natural to me as I'm writing. The lyrics are a continuous sci-fi story, however, for this album we wanted it to be more open ended for the listener to take from it whatever they wanted. There is some social commentary here and there, as you would see in a movie like RoboCop or something. The goal is to be subtle though. Nothing political, but thought-provoking. We try to let the lyrics paint a picture of something for the listener if they actually happen to read the lyrics. Most of the commentary drops off after the first few tracks, because that is where humans are now and beyond that is absolutely fictional. Maybe... Hopefully.... This album is a continuation from our 2014 release 'The Path of Apotheosis" in which Humans were created by the Anunanki as a slave race and were abandoned because our creators were at war with themselves. Leaving us to be our own gods, sending us on the "Path of Apotheosis." The opening melody of Vile Genesis is actually the closing melody from that particular record. Anyway, Thanks for taking the time to do this. I know it was likely exhausting as hell. haha Cheers!
Dude, what? I'm humbled to hear you dropped everything to check out this full video! I had completely forgotten that I checked out a track from y'all (it was over 3 years ago 😅) but after seeing the title I was immediately thrown back into that. I couldn't remember every detail but it left a good enough impression that I could recall the general gist of it just by name. Thanks for the time signature info. That's easily the biggest question I had that only the band could answer. Y'all absolutely have the interchangeable time feel and it creates such a fluidity to your music. When there are meter changes I don't even feel them; it's all soooooo smooth. And thanks for letting me know that this is a continuation, lyrically. I'll have to give The Path of Apotheosis a listen soon! This was definitely an exhausting listen but totally worth it.
..."as we work on our new album." Bro, you're never NOT working on a new album, haha. You and the guys are powerhouses, and you've been in my top 10 artist rotation for half a decade now. Been hooked since Revenant. Love seeing interactions like this on RUclips from my favorite creators. (Also... Come to Vermont already damnit!!)
"Critical Reactions" lives up to the name. I've been introduced to so much top-tier music on this channel. Obviously great community, recommendations, listeners. This is the comments section I need and want. Plus this is some wicked, fire, ultra-doped tracks at 1am. Cheers everyone. :-)
very cool album. I heard many of the things i have liked since the 90s. It is a clusterfuck of music, in a good sense. Sound solid melodic death with a proggressive touch and even some black metal touch here and there. Good shit. And i like the classical death metal voice, the higher one, the one that closer to black metal. Reminds me of chuck.
Inferi is a goddamn institution. Every lineup through the years has just delivered. You all are not just incredible writers and musicians, but also just stand up guys that bring a ton of energy and positivity to the culture. The only bad thing about Inferi for me is listening to anything else and getting sad about how few other bands have anything approaching the appropriate level of appreciation for Arsis.
Hey dude! Stevie (vocalist of Inferi) here. Watching you go through the album track by track and point out what you believe to be its wins and opportunities as increasingly interesting! I can not tell you how much i appreciate the fact that you read all of the lyrics and the very kind words you had to say about my writing style. Definitely made my day! If you ever want to chat about them or do a deep dive into the story and symbology, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thanks for sharing your time and experience with us! I'm subscribed to your channel now and look forward to diving into your catalog. Cheers 🤘
Dude, you absolutely killed it on this album. I'll absolutely reach out when I can find a free moment because I'd love to chat about the lyrics. Thanks for dropping by this little corner of the internet :)
Saw Inferi along with Archspire, Vulvodynia and Entheos last summer. Inferi's singer made the sound guy have a bit of an episode, his singing (and screaming) range is so wide that every time the sound guy would put EQ over him he'd switch styles and completely screw it up for the mix lol One time he did a high scream and it literally sounded like a singular note, everything stripped but a single frequency.
I've seen inferi twice, including once on my birthday which was probably one of the best nights of my life.. they're always a blast live and insanely talented.. they've maintained a spot in my top 5 fav bands since the early 2010s
If this is your style of metal, I strongly suggest you the album "Esoteric malacology" from "Slugdge" which is a concept album with a similar prog/tech melodeath style (and they even use some clean vocals).
YES!! Bro, I can never recommend that album enough. Slugdge are phenomenal and I can't wait for a new album from them. I go back to Esoteric all the time.
I’m the same. Not a HUGE fan of death metal but this one clicked with me. I think the melodic and tech elements grabbed me in and then I was able to enjoy the death metal. I love the “neoclassical” harmonizing and counterpoint being played in both ears throughout the albums. It’s a nice contrast to the sheer death metal portions. I find their riffs heavy but dynamic in both melody and rhythm. This band, along with Flub and Beasts of Nod, are two tech death bands that I truly enjoy….(edited: I take that back, I was listening to my tech death playlist and so many good bands out there 🤘). I find it interesting that I really enjoy dissodeath as well. Haven’t quite explored the why I enjoy these two but not straight up DM. Excited to continue seeing what you think!
Listened the first two tracks, then jumped off the video and went to binge listen ALL of the band stuff and it's actually so impressive how much these guys are good! Incredible find of a band. I'm admittedly a fan of everything so there's very little that I actively don't like but this is top tier in my tech death list, and I appreciate a lot how sick the classic metal guitar tune sounds in junction with everything. It reminds me in that aspect of Mandroid Echostar, a band that couldn't be farther away from the tech death genre but does utilizes that same classic metal sound in it's own way and makes it unique, just like Inferi. All in all, amazing album and amazing band.
Inferi is probably my favorite band right now. Every single track they've recorded since Stevie joined the band has been a masterpiece. Since you enjoyed this album and its melodic elements, I'd recommend giving Virvum a try. Illuminance is the only album that I've heard that scratches the same itch as Inferi does. They sound to me like a combo of Spawn of Possession and Ghost Reveries/Watershed era Opeth. I second your thoughts about the themes being so 90s. Kinda goes along with the album art being so bad lol. But I love it. And the ideas and lyricism are still so top tier. I love how their execution is relentlessly artistic in almost every way, despite being so brutal and technical. Its exactly what I need. Congrats on the shoutout from Malcolm. So cool! I got a chance to chat with Stevie and Andrew at a show. Super nice guys. It brought me great pleasure. This band deserves all the recognition.
What a pleasant surprise! I saw these guys live a few years back, and I've thoroughly enjoyed this record! Great band, and this is their best record by far imo.
Yooo finally I see some Inferi in here. I would really like it if you react to Inferi - Destroyer / Inferi - Behold the bearer of light or Inferi - those who from the heavens came. Their best songs in my opinion.
I personally love the guitar work between the 1 and 2 minute mark of Carving Thine Kingdom (same section basically repeats later in the song too), and the solos on Heirs of the Descent. Those are some sections I’ve gone back to repeatedly with this album.
Inferi's become one of my favourite (tech) bands since this album came out. Revenant (2018) is still by far my favourite, but this one is SO damn solid, with especially the first 2 tracks, Simian Hive's 2nd half (from the tempo change), and the final 2 tracks hitting home. The songs themselves aren't as "standout mind blowing" or super melodic as the best from Revenant, but the RIFFS and arrangement is SO DAMN GOOD on every song It's like a more accessible continuation of Necrophagist's counterpoint guitar arrangements but without being in too odd time signatures like 3/4 followed by 5/8 or 15/16 in 240 bpm. Inferi's 12/8, 3/4 and 4/4 meters still sound dynamic and engaging without being too wild for the sake of it. Would love to see you react to "Irreversible Mechanism - Immersion" from 2018. Proooobably my favourite tech death album ever (sorry to Inferi, Beyond Creation, Obscura and Necrophagist :P), it's VERY melodic and atmospheric with a great flow between almost every song!
Regarding the meter - in their official tab book, the first half is mostly notated as 3/4 and in the second half of the album most of the songs are 4/4 with some brief deviations
I totally missed that 9 but it's also a multiple of 3 so it's possible it blended in a bit with the overwhelming usage of 3 and 4. Thanks for the info though. It's interesting to hear they didn't opt for the 12/8.
If you liked this I gotta suggest Archspire's latest record Bleed the Future. They push things to the limit as far as technicality, but still manage to keep things melodic with a strong classical music influence
My standards, along with Bleed the Future, is Beyond Creation’s The Aura for a more classical influence. And Cynic’s Traced in Air for jazz influenced.
@@erxan4163 to be fair, I don't think I clicked with them when I reacted to them. That was Involuntary Doppelganger. It wasn't until someone in the Discord mentioned Bleed the Future and I checked it out on my own that I enjoyed them.
I downloaded and listened through Inferi's discography a few years back (before this album was released) and really enjoyed them. They're the perfect example of an iterative band that just executes the genres they work in (melodic tech death) at such a high level that if you like either genre even a little bit it's impossible not to enjoy them. I especially appreciate how in a genre oversaturated with bands pushing the extreme of technicality they don't forget to actually write memorable riffs, and they know how to mix up rhythmic ferocity with more melodic sections. Xoth, Artificial Brain, and Horrendous are other fairly recent extreme metal bands I put into that category. Would love to see any combination of those bands on tour together!
I'm in the process of making genre playlists for all of my reactions so it'll be easier to find new music. I've done a TON of death metal reactions so with any luck you'll have a lot of new music to check out once I finish making those playlists.
@@CriticalReactions sounds awesome. I wish more channels checked out death metal, it's always good to step out of the comfort zone - and it becomes addictive once you're into it
This honest to god is my favorite tech death album and band to date. I found them a couple years back before Vile Genesis released. On first listen it was good but I never really found it to be as special as I do now. I like a good bit of tech death but this is the pinnacle of tech death and easily a top 5 favorite album for me, behind Odyssey to the West and Portal of I/Citadel
This album delivers the same kind of catchy complexity that was present on all their prior albums, but finally with the production level and the theatrical plays on expectation which just swing you from one track into the next. More importantly, they run full speed towards delivering the listener those big grins and laughs. Been a huge fan since Path of Apotheosis (2014), but I can’t lie that this remains my favorite release of theirs. Pretty wild since it was also a top contender for worst album cover of the decade…
Inferi is so fucking fast but with those sprinkles of fun, let it be a riff or tombs and percussion in general. Also very melodic, kind of similar to Archspire some times, guess that's why these bands are seemingly also very close to each other. Is there a NeO Exul review planned? This Album was released kind of unnoticed by most "reactors/reviewers" sadly.
Do I detect a Helloween influence in there, especially the guitars? Not as horrible as death metal tends to be. Did they even have any blast beats in there? It can't be death metal without blast beats!
