    Crimson Avenger is probably depicted as being the oldest DCAU hero due to the fact that in comics he predates Batman, coming along a mere five months after Superman. He’s not DC's actual oldest hero, though. That honor would go to Doctor Occult, who debuted three years before the Man of Steel.

    So canonically she had the cosmic converter belt first as it was part of Star Spangle Kids costume, its how he flew and had his endurance and stamina enhanced also made by Ted Knight. That was her primary power source in the Stars and Stripes comic. She then gained the cosmic staff after She became Star Woman in the Sins of the Youth cross over even that spun out of Young Justice. Jack gave her the staff after seeing her actions as an adult during that event. Also, Ted's Death wasn't Mysterious, it happened in front of Jack after Ted got to hold his grandson for the first and final time and then was killed along with the mist in low orbit by a bomb. Will Payton is also affiliated to the Knight's via marriage as his sister is Jack Knight's wife, Sadie.

    My head canon is that the original Starman (Ted Knight) along with his sons David and Jack, are part of Earth 2 and that explains why they have ties with Stargirl, who's a legacy hero of the Star-Spangled Kid (a totally unrelated hero from Starman). While on Earth 1, Mikaal Tomas was the first Starman before retiring and giving the mantle to Prince Gavyn, who later after gave his powers to Will Payton, and at the end in the future, Starboy asumes the role of Starman despite not having co-relation with the previous Earth 1 ones

Ditko's 1980 Starman did have a lot of shepherd-like staffs of power popping up in them (though I don't recall if Starman himself had one at any point in it, in the Superman/DC Presents team up or in his (shamefully only one panel) final appearance in Crisis. Wonder if a coincidence or if it inspired post-Crisis writers/artists who 1st gave Starman his own scepter-staff?

  • @DirigoDuke

    Courtney did not have a Cosmic Converter Belt only in JLU. That’s what she initially used in the STARS & S.T.R.I.P.E. series until Jack gave her his staff. The belt belonged to original Star-Spangled Kid Sylvester Pemberton. Originally, Sylvester had no super-powers. Nor did Stripsey. They just tooled around in the Star Rocket Racer, which was their flying car. Not long after the Seven Soldiers were rescued from the times they’d been lost in (in JLA #100-102), DC revived ALL-STAR COMICS starring the JSA, with Sylvester, Power Girl, and an adult Robin joining the older heroes. In the first issue if that new launch (#58) Sylvester shows up wearing the Cosmic Converter Belt, which he describes as being “based on Star Man's Cosmic Rod technology,” thus giving him super powers for the first time.

    Minor correction: Courtney 1st appeared in 1999, WELL after the Crisis, which was in 1985. So, by that time, there was no Earth-2, with Stargirl and S.T.R.I.P.E. having always loved on the single Earth universe that resulted from Crisis.

    • @dcauwatchtower
      @dcauwatchtower  4 года назад +1

      Right, I worded that sentence a little strangely. “This was all before Crisis” etc. was supposed to just refer to the Seven Soldiers time travel stuff, but the Courtney sentence got stuck in there, too. All the stuff you’re commenting boils down to: this is what I get for trying to simplify decades of comic books into a couple paragraphs, haha.

    In my headcanon Ted Knight, David Knight and Jack Knight were the Starmen of Earth 2, with the Star-Spangled Kid being a related hero and then Stargirl ending the legacy by inheriting both the SSK and Starman's powers. Ferris Knight is just an evil, future descendant of Ted Knight.
    Meanwhile on Earth 1, Mikaal Thomas used to be Starman before retiring, then Price Gavyn took the name even though he's not related to humans at all, and later passed his powers to William Payton, the main Starman from this earth. In the future, Starboy is an unrelated hero and member of the Legion of Superheroes.

    I understand not being able to stick to a programming schedule. I’m six episodes into my show; the second episode was STATED it was going to be about Star Trek Picard-and five episodes later, I’m yet to drop it because the 2020 “apocalypse” kind of brought up some more pressing issues to talk about. And then “Lower Decks” dropped-so THAT became the topic. Still haven’t gotten to Picard. So, I feel you. Regarding Stargirl...
    I am very pleasantly surprised how much I am enjoying the live-action Stargirl series. It’s actually refreshing that it’s a family friendly show about a teenaged superhero-where she is actually being a superhero instead preaching to me. It’s a very enjoyable show. I was not too familiar with this character when DC Universe announced it. But around that same time I was watching my JLU DVD box set and she makes a couple appearances along with Starman and STRIPE-and that tiny bit of information from JLU made the live-action show make more sense to me as I was going in. As much as I loved Justice League Unlimited, they definitely could have done Star Girl more justice. Having her be a background character used just to fill out large battle scenes or make the Watchtower feel more lively, and then putting in the spotlight only to make her look like the less popular, less powerful, less charismatic bitter and jealous counterpart to Supergirl felt gross and annoying. Other JLU members who only ever appeared in the background like Crimson Fox, Gypsy, Vibe, Obsidian, or Dr. Light were already underused, but they picked Star Girl out just to highlight her as "bargain bin Supergirl who nobody likes" and unlike the ending to Patriot Act, were Vigilante, Shining Knight, Crimson Avenger, and Speedy start out as "off brand heroes who nobody cares about" but then become popular and well liked at the end, Star Girl's ending in Chaos at the Earth's Core is basically just learning to accept that she's mid compared to Kara, or something like that.

See, in addition to Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman, GA and Speedy were the only super-heroes (at DC or anywhere) to remain in publication continuously from the Golden Age of the 1940s through to the Silver Age of the 1960s. Thus, when the multiverse concept was introduced to differentiate the Golden and Silver Age versions of various characters, GA & Speedy had exact duplicates on both Earths, just separated by time era. Then, when DC made the ultimately boneheaded move to merge all worlds and timelines into a single continuity as a result of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, the Earth-2 versions of the Big 5 (er, 7, counting Speedy and Robin) was simply ignored, with those characters established in the modern age with no prior version of legacy. Thus, the JSA became the predecessors of the JLA, instead of multiversesal doppelgängers. Of course, that kind of negated the whole Seven Soldiers-shunted-into-the-future story, as least as it involved GA & Speedy. IIRC, GA was replaced in official DC continuity, and in the Seven Soldiers, by a different Golden Age bowman, The Spider, while Crimson Avenger's previously-ignored sidekick Wing took Speedy's place as the titular seventh soldier. See, very simply, really. 🤨

    First off I want to say that I love the watchtower database and it's not in my nature to usually critique good fans passionate fans of the dcau but I'm afraid I will have to point out one small tiny error Mr James LOL that you had made LOL
    According to stargirl in Justice League unlimited chaos at the Earth's core she actually refers to Pat Dugan AKA stripe as her father.
    But then we learn that if you watch behind the characters or whatever that's called I can't remember at the moment we find out that Pat Dugan is actually Star girls stepfather. Ironically she supposedly got her powers from a character name star man but it's not this guy or the Starboy we saw from the future in Justice League versus the fatal five.
    Apparently there's a lot of star characters including an evil star ironically I have his action figure in the supposed legion of Doom or whatever God was calling them the secret society or whatever.
    Like I said I'm not a critiquer I love the DCA you I love you guys y'all look great I love the artwork I love Bruce Tim style I just love the DCA you so much I really hope we don't get a live action dcau because Lord knows we do not need it!! Let's keep the dcau animated please that's why we call it the DC animated universe we do not need it to be live action under any circumstances.
    Actually come to think of it I would love to see more dcau property maybe we can get a zeta continuation or possibly a Batman beyond continuation after the events of epilogue I would love to see what Terry's life is like now that he's chosen to stay with Dana chosen to keep everyone in his family that he loves and possibly might even have a kid with Dana who knows.

    Still nada on Starman though.

    In a way it gives the TV show more room to make Stargirl great. I always nit pick over Batman (anything), Stargirl can create her own fans who in the future can insult future shows/ comics/ movies. I hope they make the most of that (relative) freedom. New shows like this should come to UK faster, still not able to watch all Batwoman! 1/2 through & I have to worry about a new Batwoman? Can you talk about Wildcat & the female version in Stargirl, so want a Wildcat series Ted isn't used enough.

    Actually to be truthfully honest I'm kind of annoyed that when the Justice League unlimited action figures came out in the 2000s the star girl figure was not only long legged LOL but also a little too small. She should have been the height of Supergirl and yeah... I really don't know why we didn't get a decent stargo figure in the Justice League unlimited collection and for that matter I don't know why we didn't get a decent Batgirl figure and the new Batman animated series collection new Batman adventures sorry but still for what we got they were great I know this isn't an action figure channel but I figured I'd bring that up anyway because I just really wanted to also I saw a zeta figure Big Sur prise surprise not really quote? Also I would like to see a Royal flush gang collection of action figures but someone made custom figures and they're actually not able to be bought which is unfortunate. Still sorry no this isn't a toy channel but wanted to say it anyway. Again love the dcau love your work you guys are amazing please keep it up. As Captain planet would probably say the dcau power is yours. Sorry.. really didn't mean to reference Captain planet. What was I thinking?? :-)

    The raan war just doesn’t fit into the dcau. It bothers me a lot. They are all but gone because of the episode with vigilante, hawkgirl, and vixen where they encountered the last of the thanagarians. Yes they could’ve regrouped but it doesn’t make sense. Also why would hawkgirl be fighting for them against the green lanterns and John Stewart. She’s banished from the tribe and doesn’t want to be associated with them anymore. The timeline is pretty tight but that’s just like cmon man

    I've never figured it out, are Starman and Stargirl supposed to be cosmic space heroes or more patriotic heroes?

    • @foldabotZ
      @foldabotZ 3 года назад +1

      Star-Spangled Kid, Sylvester Pemberton, was a patriotic WW2 hero, like Captain America and the Shield, meant to be a symbol against the Nazis. Courtney Whitmore, took his costume decades later, spruced it up, and became the new Star-Spangled Kid before she was given the Cosmic Rod by Jack Knight to become Stargirl(she kept the same costume).
      Speaking of Jack Knight; him, his older brother, and father held the identity of Starman separately. They used Cosmic Rods to give them the ability of flight and fire energy blasts.
      Prince Gavyn and Thom Kallor, the former an alien prince and the latter a 30th century superhero, are the ones considered to be the cosmic space Starmen. Star-Spangled Kid, and by extension Stargirl, were patriotic heroes while the Knights were only because the original(Ted Knight) was an Astronomer.
