      Well the way it’s stated in Tolkiens notes and books it’s much more GG and Elendil v Sauron. Isildur Cirdan and Elrond fighting the Nazgul is actually a pretty good theory as to why they were never directly mentioned as fighting sauron.

      It leaves a lot of mystery. Like why is Sauron the only one there without a named weapon? Was he fighting by hand only? When he has the ring does he even really need a weapon? Did he think they would just see him and give up? Did they just BARELY manage to hurt him enough to immobilize him? Would Elrond even tell anyone that they never stood a chance and went down immediately? Is that why it's so vague? Was he "alive" and responsive when Isildur came to him? So cool

  • @KTChamberlain
    @KTChamberlain 3 года назад +66

    I believe it would make sense for Sauron to go out and attack the leaders of the Last Alliance himself as a last resort. In Sun Tzu's The Art of War, he says "Do not press a desperate foe too hard." meaning, do not attack when your enemy is backed into a corner, especially when he has nothing left to lose.

      @@poll-lie-ticks1776 The "Hesitation" at Dunkirk happened because the Germans overextended their offensive and had to stop, refuel, resupply, and secure their otherwise exposed southern flank. Furthermore, the Germans constantly assaulted the British and French troops evacuating without their weapons and artillery, so I would hardly call it hesitation on the part of the Germans. Even if they did somehow cutoff the retreat of the 300,000 at Dunkirk, the Americans could easily fill that gap on D-Day with their numbers.

    The Silmarillion states that Sauron "wrestled" with Gil-Galad, and Elendil, and Sauron is one of the only characters to not have a named weapon. Many unimportant characters have named weapons, even when they are never used. I believe Sauron faced the two of them unarmed and just killed them both by hand with brute force and the heat of his spirit. Probably only 15 seconds total. This is why Sauron is so cool. He fights his own battles like Morgoth only did once.

      Can imagine Elendil stabbing/cutting Sauron leading to the blade burning hot & gets weakened. Leading to him getting hit & blade breaks under him when he falls dead..
      Turins Turinbars sword had a mind of its own. Could aswell be that Narsil broke because of the death of its master.
      Feels like a Tolkien thing since the sword was ancient & special. + the prophecy that the sword would be reforged and the heir if Isildur became king etc. Means they could have reforged earlier but didn't.

    • @crabberdabberye
      @crabberdabberye Год назад

      Nah it breaks when he runs sauron through with it, pulls it out and then succumbs to his wounds and died ontop of it. It’s not like a single hit from sauron would send Elendil flying he probably threw hands with sauron and took multiple blows in the fight, this isn’t the movies ☠️ they’re almost the same size.

  • @johnmooers5594
    @johnmooers5594 2 месяца назад +5

    Sauron was unarmed. No mace, sword, etc. Likely Sauron was badly wounded, and Gil Galad thrust Aegilos into Sauron's body. Sauron pulled himself up the shaft of Aeglos, grabbing Gil Galad by the neck or head, immolating him with the heat of his body (estimated at 900F degrees). Elendil thrusts Narsil through Sauron's heart, mortally wounding Sauron's mortal form. Elendil dies from wounds and/or burning and falls across his sword. Narsil was made brittle from the heat of Sauron's body with the blade of Narsil breaking about a foot from the hilt when Elendil falls upon it. Isildur describes the One Ring as being "hot as a glede" when he took it. Tolkien was fond of old English in which "glede" meant a red hot burning coal. Little wonder that Isildur was never free of the pain from the ring burning him.

  • @shinestar2912
    @shinestar2912 3 года назад +13

    I think Sauron was mortally wounded by Elendil and Gil-Galad. All he had left was the power of influence. As Isildur approached the stricken Sauron, the Dark Lord reached out his hand to try to sway Isildur. Isildurs grief turned to greed as he viewed the One Ring on Saurons outstretched burnt hand. Isildur slashed angrily at Saurons feigned attempt at mercy and cut the One ring from his finger. He claimed the One Ring for himself and was corrupted by the power within. A similar fate would be shared by Smeagol many years later.

    • @Deathunter761
      @Deathunter761 2 года назад +2

      If the Ring and Sauron are one, why would Isildur feels greed with the Ring still on Sauron's finger ? The Rings radiates with emotions only when it is vulnerable to the decisions of other than its Master.
      My take is that the 2 kings were escorted by many (whom Isildur) to kill Sauron, but the Maia managed to kill or put KO everyone except the 2 kings.
      They fight, Sauron is "overthrowned" (Tolkien's word) and Isildur, previously stunned and wounded, manages to get back into the fight to cut off Sauron's finger with the broken sword Narsil.
      Meanwhile Sauron was not dead but wounded, numbed, paralyzed and finally hampered by Aeglos, allowing Isildur to perform the cut that would deal the "death blow", cause the Ring would have allowed Sauron to survive and heal in the hour probably.

    I like how Lotro did their cutscene the way you're describing it as well. I thought it was interesting that they made Sauron power-punch Elendil to break his neck but it makes sense that he would've done it with his ring hand. I also liked how until elendil stabbed Sauron he actually outmatched him in skill and was almost as tall as him. The long beard of Elendil was a nice touch as well to signify the passage of time.

    I very much asume that "Gil-Galad and Elendil vs Sauron" is more figuratively meant: Same as "Sauron conquering the lands of the east and south" which of course he did not by himself but with his servants. Since these three figures were the chiefs of their hosts, only those are mentioned.. I fathom it takes a great hero of the first age to combat a Maiar spirit.

    The extreme heat of Sauron's body could have made Elendil's sword soft if he pierced Sauron's body with it. Maybe that's why when he pulled it from Sauron to do another blow he was struck and thus landed on his softened sword, breaking it. Just a thought.

    Sauron had great power to instill fear in men and elves, more so when wearing the one ring and to a far greater degree than than Witch King and other Nazgul. Presumably, even with Sauron's will driving his servants, they could not withstand the forces of the Nolder, Numenoreans and allies. Hence, when on the verge of defeat, Sauron was obligated to come forward himself. Sauron's presence weakened the will of men and elves to resist Sauron's force and were killed or driven away, similar to when Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli were pursuing the Orcs who captured Merry and Pippin, felt will causing them to feel tired and dispirited. Only Gil-galad, Elrond, Cirdan, Elendil and Isildur were able to withstand Sauron's approach. I will presume Sauron did not come alone but had his bodyguard (trolls?) and Elrond, Cirdan and Isildur had to contend with these leaving Gil-galad and Elrond to face Sauron. I am inclined to think the Sauron broken Narsil and killed Elendil first, then killed Gil-galad. but himself was knocked down by Gil-galad. This would give Isildur time to pick up Narsil to cut the ring finger off Sauron. It is possible Sauron's armor could withstand ordinary and even Numenorean steel, and only something special could cut Sauron's armor, hence Isildur went for Narsil

    Its sad Tollkien never gave us a clear description how the last battle of Elendil and Gil-Galad went but i like your interpretation.
    Maybe Narsil broke because Sauron steped on Elendil who lyed upon his sword.
    No canon in any way but i like to think that Isildur, Elrond and Cirdan fought Saurons lieutenants (the nazgûl) and can't help the high king until he was weakened and his servants run away. So the only thing Isildur was left to do was cuting of the ring of saurons hand.

    My first disagreement is that it was said that both of them engaged in a duel with sauron, that implies they fought him with purpose together not moments apart.
    I would also say that sauron was a bad fighter seems to be silly, there's nothing to indicate he couldn't throw hands and it diminishes him as a foe and Gil-Galad and Elendil as his opponents. Gil-Galad was a peerless fighter and fought in and survived in the war of wrath and Elendil was the best swordsman in all of Númenor. Frankly Sauron would need some skill to kill them considering that fingolfin who would be of comparable skill did relatively decently against morgoth who by all rights was more powerful. Tolkien said Gandalf couldn't beat sauron in a fight, Gandalf fought a balrog on equal terms. This implies Gil and Elendil could have slain a balrog and therefore you have to judge the skill of their duel with sauron with all this in mind.
    As a final point I would think Elendil would go down first not Gil-Galad as sauron resorted to burning Gil alive but did not burn Elendil and also Gil's spear was melted after the fight so sauron was never pierced by Narsil until the ring was cut. All this indicates (forensically) Elendil gave Gil an opening to strike intentionally or not and died doing so, Gil struck but was consumed by flame with his spear inside sauron who then fell to the wound, unable to stop his ring from being cut by Isildur. I would note I doubt the king would have gone down easily and it could be assumed therefore the duel wasn't a quick one and that was simply its conclusion.

    Wonderful speculation on how this momentous event took place. I never really considered that isildur’s cutting of the ring finger, defeating Sauron (like in the film’s presentation) is not how the accounts make it. Rather, the might of Gil Galad and Elendil’s duel alone were enough to would Sauron so much that Isildur had the opportunity to “deal the final blow” and collect his weregild.

    My interpretation of what happened is when Sauron realised he was f*cked he leads the final sortie to reach Orodruin, perhaps to create a volcanic inferno that destroys the last alliance. When he reaches the mountain and starts to descend, on one of the platforms Gil-Galad and Elendil reaches Sauron and duels him. They fight and wound each other several times. At last Sauron gets the overhand and flings Elendil aside. Gil-Galad pierces Sauron with Aeglos but is simultaneously hoisted up in the air and scorched by Saurons hand. Sauron takes his ring and drops Gil-Galads lifeless body, but before he can put it on Elendil tackles Sauron, flinging them both over the edge of the platform, crashing down at the side of the mountain. Narsil brakes beneath Elendil and the king dies in the fall. Sauron, wounded and weak tries to drag himself towards Vilya. Isildur finds him, takes his father’s broken sword and cuts off the ring from the dark lords hand, creating a shockwave from the separation of Sauron from his power.

    Really just The Second Age's iteration of Fingolfin and Morgoth. Personal, hand-to-hand combat between the world's current Dark Lord and its Heroes with unbelievably high stakes at hand. In one, the Second Age ends, Sauron's crippled..and in the other, Morgoth, a friggin God of Valinor, quakes in fear and is ultimately proven to be actually beatable. Hope still lives for the Peoples of Middle-earth.. but comes at a _great_ cost.
    (I don't know, just my two cents.) I really like the comparing and contrasting of the two monumental events.

    I think the final battle lasted much longer maybe several days. After many sorties and wounds Sauron was defeated and maybe feined greater injury in order to at least take down Gil Galad whom he burned with a spell. Gil Galad probably had many injuries too. Elendil close by responded by stabbing Sauron which destroyed both Elendil and most of his sword but what was left of Sauron. Isildur completed the deed. He Cirdan and Elrond probably arrived to witness as Elendil dealt the fatal blow.

    Good video. I think Tolkien purposely left it vague. He could have had Elrond describe it in detail at the Council but chose not to. Or he could have put it in the appendices. It's interesting, Lore, that Sauron is, in the trilogy, never an on-stage character. He is only referred to; he never appears. The trilogy is about "the ring," and the dangerous temptation it represents. Sauron himself is, more or less, just an agent of Morgoth. He's just a powerful and cunning balrog who had the ability to cloak himself in a fair form and seduce elves and men. You and I both have a lot of problems with the movie adaptation of LOTR, but one thing Peter Jackson was correct in doing was to show Isildur standing inside Mt. Doom and losing the will to destroy the ring, while Elrond screamed at him to throw it into the pit. This is, of course, a compete invention on the part of Jackson but it fits perfectly thematically. Sauron himself is incidental. It is the ring, and how each character reacts to it, that is at the heart of the story. (P.S. We will soon get Amazon's Second Age adaptation, where Sauron is an on-stage character, though Tolkien neve wrote descriptions of interactions or conversations between characters, etc. It will be interesting to see how they draw his character, given there is so little material with which to work.)

With LOTR they didn't have to invent anything, they had to leave things out, lot of things (like The Scouring of the Shire). I think this holds at least somewhat even for Narsil which had a much greater lineage & superior forging. Cutting off the ring finger can hardly called a 'death blow' (One Ring or not). Sauron could be killed in body, with or without the One Ring (his 'death' in Numenor shows this). Taking the One Ring merely prevented a quick return of the Dark Lord. This does not mean that it was not Elendil & Gil-galad that did the lion's share of the fighting though. Perhaps even mortally wounding or severely weakening Sauron. And Elendil's sword breaking underneath him may have more to do with Elendil being defeated than any special force applied to it, as there is precedent of 'magic' swords breaking is such situations when a beloved master falls. Sauron's last sortie was evidently intended to 'cut off the head' of the Alliance leadership, as without their mighty leaders, the Alliance could be expected to loose heart and possibly crumble. It made it all the way to the slopes of Mt. Doom, which is about twenty (or was that 40?) miles (iirc), which is quite a distance and must have been a massive undertaking.

      A lot of the reasoning behind that could be purely symbolic, a comment on the nature of evil, unable to will a form greater than what it had before. Sauron uses his will and power to recreate a shape, but it remains tarnished, and incomplete, carrying the wound he was dealt before. It would be one he wouldn't heal through his own will until the ring was returned to him. A reminder of his malicious will and intent.
      On the other hand, it could be related to Tolkien's thoughts on those losing an incarnated form wishing to return as quickly as they can to that form. Sauron had been forced from that form and took a long time to will and desire its return. He gets that in the end, but it remains in some ways broken, with him unable to heal that wound through his own will. It leads me to suspect that if Morgoth could have returned to a physical form, he would have willed the one he lost at the end of the First Age, with incurable wounds he had once been dealt. A wound of the body tied to the wounding of the spirit. It seems Sauron (perhaps) could just not get over the wound that he was dealt which caused him to lose the ring.
      Just my thoughts on it anyway!
