Aragorn had rescued Gondor in its dire need, and even healed many of its citizens. People had great respect for him, and would do the same as they did for Faramir. The Rohirrim had already followed their King to the Siege of Gondor, which was the same situation. They were loyal to their King. You also must remember Gandalf and his inspiration. This was his task, to inspire the forces of the free peoples to oppose Sauron. He also wore Narya which enhanced this ability. @@SantomPh I love how he allowed men to stay behind, ones from Rohan or Southern Gondor who hadn't witnessed the pure evil of Mordor and Sauron as intensively as others, but he did it by allowing them to keep their honour and pride by giving them tasks, tangible and credible tasks like re-taking Cair Andros. @@paulguest3674 this action has also taken care of the army the Rohirrim had to avoid earlier in Anorien, so it is a win win situation. Aragorn would know how the young men of Rohan and Gondor felt, as he had also travelled this way at their age, and unlike them had to face his fears and literally cross into Mordor and the Harad , alone.
This is soo well made, thank you for this wonderful video. I hope your channel will grow, it's quality is undeniable. Looking forward to next video, especially the battle animations :)
Tolkien did serve on the Western Front in the Great War, if only for about six weeks, he was evacuated with fever. There are a number of odd bits in Lord of the Rings, that speciffically refer to his service. Also the maps in the original Lord of the Rings, are reminisent of the trench maps of the area of the Somme where Tolkien served. So to stir it up, who is the Hero of Lord of the Rings?
My eyes are but curious and invested and not the ones of an elf. But I godda say, I love these battle lore videos like this one. Please, if you have the opportunity, continue doing them :)
Again such a great video with so much details from the books, i enjoy every minute. I hope to see more battles in the future, the battle at isen were theodred were mortally wounded, or the attack on osgiliath were the nazgûl break trough gondors line to reach the shire.
There is another major topic being discussed by all survivors in the city. If they were better off switching sides and submitting to the dark lord. Sounds crazy yet.... Their new king just brought an army of dead men abominations that proceeded to cut thru the enemy horde like a knife through butter. Evil creatures much more terrifying than orcs and trolls... Some type of green demon ghosts! Not even Sauron could command that many spirits at once! At least in the movie version.
I just found your channel and I am devouring those Tolkien's Versions explanations by the book battle, Great lively animations and great explanations, love your work!
Love the video. Good detail and followed that part of the story from the book pretty faithfully. Always wondered if forces x10's and more than x10's their match meant that one force had 60,000 and the other force 70-90,000 men/orcs for a total of at least 130,000-150,000 or if it was 6,000 (Men of West) x 10 x10 = 600,000 men/orcs which seems like quite a bit of overkill. The wording is ambiguous but I estimate that there were 150,000 men, orcs and trolls attacking the men of the west. Hated that Peter Jackson made the Gondorians look like the Red shirted Security guys on a Star Trek landing party.
I also hated that Peter Jackson underrated the Gondorians, but it was simply to make Mordor seem a larger threat at the siege of Minas Tirith. I really missed the Swan Knights of Dol Amroth tho. That was a bummer :/ The Lords of the West had approximately 6 000 soldiers, so Mordor had at least 60 000, but probably much more. Remember that Denethor told us that only 1 finger of Mordor had yet been stretched. There were at least 15 000 Haradrim at the siege of Minas Tirith, so the total forces must have estimated to at least 40 000 I think. That makes your assumption pretty reasonable to me! BTW cool name, is it a reference to Romendacil?
@@LoreOfTheRingsYT Yep Romandacil was the assumed name of the 8th and 19th Kings of Gondor meaning East Victor. I spent 9 years in the Far East so use the moniker. I would rather have seen the Knights of Dol Amroth at the siege of Minas Tirith as well instead of the Army of the Dead but it was more for pacing reasons and not having to introduce a new character. Just like Beregond and the Woses were left out. I estimate that Mordor had 20,000 gathered in East Osgiliath, another 20,000 from Minas Morgul and 18,000 Haradrim. While another host of 40,000 assailed Cair Andros and entered Anorien. The Battle at the Black Gate had the Host of Gorgoroth plus the Host of Nurn with an army of Easterlings so the 130-150,000 sound about right.
There are two things i don't understand about this: 1. Where did Sauron get all those new troops after he lost almost his entire army on Pelennor fields? 2. Why did he take the bait even though he knew about the hobbits? He should have figured out that Aragorn doesn't have the ring after all, and he could clearly see that his army had no hope of breaching the black gate, so why not just scour Mordor looking for the hobbits, while a garrison held the black gate? He should have more than enough troops for that.
Despite the size of the massive force sent against Gondor, it was but a portion of the full military might pent up in the Black Land, waiting to be unleashed. Sauron did NOT know the Hobbits had the ring. Recall that Sam took it from Frodo after Shelob stung him, so it was never found when Frodo was stripped after he was found and taken to Cirith Ungol.
Sauron didn't lose his army on the Pelennor Fields, just the first wave. The army at the Black Gate was just as big as the last one. He had enough forces to attack Lothlorien, Mirkwood and Erebor/Dale as well as calling up the Corsairs, whom Aragorn intercepted with the Dead. Sauron didn't really know the hobbits had the one ring, just that they were spying in Mordor and lost their things. Aragorn does his best to threaten Sauron and make him think he has the Ring,by challenging him in the Palantir and announcing himself as king. Sauron has always hated the line of Isildur, so his attention is focused on Aragorn and Gandalf now. He was already intrigued by Pippin's use of the Palantir, realizing someone is using Halflings against him for some reason or other. Sauron however is extremely arrogant and feels Aragorn is the one who has taken the ring. Hence he ignores the Hobbit threat in his realm.
Especially as Peter Jackson (wrongly) omitted it completely. If Tolkien's foreword to the second edition is anything to go by, he would have been horrified at that being missed out.
Excellent work! I hope you keep at it! It would be awesome if you continue. Make video like these for all the major battles of the war of the ring! What an achievement would that be...
@Jimmy Jazz Not lazy, he was just bad at writing them. I've never read of ice and fire, but from what I can tell all that back room dealing is more reminiscent of Roman politics.
Good sir, I just discovered you and this channel. I'm absolutely speechless. You captured all the lore and knowledge from the books and combined it with the excitement and drama of the movies. My Dad would read the books to me as a bedtime story when I was little and I of course developed a fierce love for ANYTHING related to Middle-Earth. I've lost count of how many times I've read the books or watched the movies. Thank you so much for all the time and effort you've put into this. Subscribed and telling all my buddies about it. That being said, I'm a selfish bastard... I want to hear about Nirnaeth Arnoediad... The Battle of Unnumbered Tears! Just a thought. No pressure. ;) Hurin Thalion is the most awesome character in the Tolkien universe. Thank you again!
Thanks for such a lovely comment! Don't worry, the First Age will come eventually, but I want to develop some real skill before undertaking those battles. They need to be treated with respect!
Well I'll be looking forward to it! You're doing freakin' awesome, keep up the good work! I think you already have the skill, it's just the Silmarillion is a convoluted mix of short stories so I imagine it would be a nightmare from a narrative perspective. It's just... that last stand by Hurin and his men.... It has Thermopylae/The Alamo written all over it.
Love this channel the quality and originality is off the charts his hard work is much appreciated. As for this battle I always felt Mordor used stupid tactics. They leave a huge defensive gate and fight in the open we all know how it ends and nothing would have worked for this battle was just a distraction. Mordor did not know this and it was not smart to leave the formidable defensive's just my opinion anyway.
You are underestimating just how outnumbered the Men of the West are. The Easterlings alone were 3 times the whole host and Trolls walked alongside Orcs and Haradrim. They were never under threat, there were even more armies inside Mordor. Tactics are not important when the enemy is as puny as that. Gandalf also tells Imrahil that Sauron will try to capture the big names and execute them like a man tries to take a sting from an fly-hence he will draw out the battle.
The time difference between the books and film are astonishing to me, obviously needed for the different mediums. The wall across gorgoroth to mount doom took the weakened hobbits WEEKS.
I just came upon The Siege of Gondor yesterday, and subscribed. So this showed up in my recommendations today, and I watched and enjoyed. There were two things in this sequence that disappointed me in the Peter Jackson movies: First of all, in the book, the armies of Mordor did not walk slowly out of the Black Gate like they did in the films. Tolkien described it like this: "The great doors of the Black Gate swung back wide. Out of it streamed a great host as swiftly as swirling waters when a sluice is lifted". Mind you, that was a minor sin. The MAJOR sin was having Frodo fall off into the crack of doom with Gollum, and wind up clinging to a crag in the cliff face. My jaw dropped when I first saw that - I could not believe how bad that was!!!! The monumental story ended up looking like an episode of Superman or Batman! I still fast-forward through that bit when I watch the movies. Again, thank you for all your effort in making this. You did well!
@@LoreOfTheRingsYT awesome, a good one would be the gladden fields after the last alliance, unfinished tales version 😁 I'm looking forward to the war of the elves an sauron, as will touch on the numenor law 🙂
I have one problem with the parley at the Morannon, both with the movie version and this video. While it may be more dramatic to have the huge halves of the Black Gate open, the main structure had at least one smaller gate installed within it, suitable for allowing individuals or small parties to pass to and fro without having to operate the main structure. It is through the central one of these "sub-gates" that the Mouth of Sauron emerged. The main structure was not opened until the entire army waiting inside was unleashed on the "last stand" of the Men of the West.
8:37 Here to fullfil the request of the dark lord. Hey, I´m no Aragorn. I Sauron tells me to do something, i´ll roll harder than a Dwarf in a gigantic pile of gold.
I had no idea the march to the Black Gate was gruelling and dark. Tried putting myself in their shoes and imagine what it would feel like. Yeah morale would be bottomed out when you're thinking some random claiming to be king is marching you into the enemies lands to go die. I need to really read the books lol.
I've pitched this idea to a different lotr channel but never took. With his advances in genetics, chemistry and industrialization, can saruman take over middle Earth without using the one ring?
Well it really depends. That means Saruman could not have fallen, and that means the history itself would be completely different, perhaps Sauron would have become the victor. It would take many of thousands years to discover these things as you speak of, except industrialization which was already there. We know that Tolkien intended perhaps the 7th or 8th age to be our time, but they were far longer. After Sauron was destroyed, Saruman would have left for Valinor, for he could no longer fulfill his mission. If we however say that Sauron won and Saruman was a successful ally (something he really wasn't, but let's pretend) then he could perhaps have ruled many men under Sauron. He would eventually find in Mordor the missing recipe for his own Ring of Power, and Sauron and Saruman could perhaps have started wars between each other, kind of like 1st WW. I haven't really dug in and thought much about it, but that's what I suppose.
Saruman perfected genetics with the creation of the urukai, and churning them out in massive scale. His mastery of chemistry was demonstrated at helm's deep. I think he could have taken a good chunk with what he had. Probably a good chunk more if he continued experimentation. Bigger and better urukai, development of firearms, and the industrial output to keep his armies armed and armored.
@@Demolitiondude He didn't pull orcs out of pits, he bred men with orcs. His explosions were also used in Mordor, so nothing new there. Saruman did not invent much on his own. His voice was his weapon. Given enough time in Mordor he would learn how to forge his own ring, but that was with the help of Sauron.

It's an often overlooked part of the book and the telling but I think it's very important to allow the reader to understand what kind of King he'd be and what kind of people he would lead.
Please continue this great job and for the next time i would like to see something about the battles in the north during the war of the ring!!!
Surely I will cover them one day!
This is soo well made, thank you for this wonderful video. I hope your channel will grow, it's quality is undeniable. Looking forward to next video, especially the battle animations :)
Thank you for your lovely comment!
8:41 Who would be Saruman's replacement to rule over Isengard?
The Mouth himself!
IT would be: peppa the pig
The passage in the video concludes with a strong indication it would be the Mouth himself.
My eyes are but curious and invested and not the ones of an elf. But I godda say, I love these battle lore videos like this one. Please, if you have the opportunity, continue doing them :)
I will continue them during summer, for now, I have exams, and it would simply require too much. Can't wait to continue my work on them :)
Lore of Middle-Earth yeah, very understandable :) good luck!
Again such a great video with so much details from the books, i enjoy every minute. I hope to see more battles in the future, the battle at isen were theodred were mortally wounded, or the attack on osgiliath were the nazgûl break trough gondors line to reach the shire.
Thank you! There will be more :)
Very clever, the end of the scroll listing Sauron's demands. Very interesting. lol.
Keen eyed!
@@LoreOfTheRingsYT Very well done! Thanks for posting, enjoyed it very much.
Sauron has a youtube Channel.
Well made! Great quality. I like the characters with their drawn apparence. It brings something new then just movie's images.
Thank you!
I just found your channel and I am devouring those Tolkien's Versions explanations by the book battle, Great lively animations and great explanations, love your work!
Awesome, thank you!
7:49 I really love this depiction of The Black Gate. More grounded.
Are you from Norway...? Something about your dialect says so
Indeed I am!

wanted to ask a similar question, but I thought he came from Switzerland/Valais xD

Just another amazing video. Well done.... you make me want to read the books and watch the movies all over again.
Glad to hear that! Read the book during summer!
I love how important the Rohirrim are, because I find it difficult to think of them as anything besides Angry Horse Men
Angry Horse Men that answered
And saved the world
The dialogue between host of the west and the Mouth of Sauron is perhaps my favourite part of the book.
There are two things i don't understand about this:
Wow, has to be one of the most detailed and visually best lore video I've ever watched about LOTR. Really good work, keep it up!
Great! Thanks for leaving such a fine comment :)
Very well dude can you do the battle with the shire and saruman?
I am definitely considering it!
geopro007 haha a bunch of hobbits killing half orcs. Lol
Yeah it's true
Good idea
Especially as Peter Jackson (wrongly) omitted it completely. If Tolkien's foreword to the second edition is anything to go by, he would have been horrified at that being missed out.
"Wally upon Wally..." Great video! Thanks for bring this to life for us!
Thank you :)
Excellent work! I hope you keep at it! It would be awesome if you continue. Make video like these for all the major battles of the war of the ring! What an achievement would that be...
I am working on the Battle of the Five Armies now! I have been busy with exams, but I now work to get much work done!
J R R Tolkien: i had been to war
J R Martin: i had fought a tree
hung nguyen : Tolkien understood medieval warfare. Martin understood medieval politics.
Tim Smith imagine if they fused and made the lord of the throne
Seen two videos today and was very impressed. Great attention to detail and very enjoyable videos with great sounds and visuals.
Well Done!
Happy to hear that!
I love this new format, I hope you keep making new videos like this! I don't mind waiting a while for some good quality content.
More will come during the summer! First a less time consuming video + exams. But look forward to summer :)
@@LoreOfTheRingsYT Good luck with your exams, and I will be looking foward!
Great video about the battle of the black gate. I felt sorry for sauron as he was very close to victory.

Nice video man let's see some older famous battles like the war of wrath I just recently started learning the history and these videos help a lot
Yup many will come!
Thank you Mr!
When Westrons saw the glittering Frodo mithril mail in the orcs hands...they all were like "ohfuckno" !!!
The time difference between the books and film are astonishing to me, obviously needed for the different mediums. The wall across gorgoroth to mount doom took the weakened hobbits WEEKS.
I think this made me want to read the book again...
Awesome to hear that!
I gladly agree to Mordor's last demand.
Thank you! The film did their part very well, but the book is the true best :)
I am quite used to the Epic History TV channel videos on real life battles so to see LOTR in a similar style was very satisfying.
Great to hear that :)
I think the like and sub part of the ultimatum really pushed Aragorn away from accepting Saurons demand
I always find myself loving the production of your videos, stellar work :)

YES finally! the best thing to wake up to this!
Great!
I believe I missed this! Thank you for clarifying!
I would hate to be one of the guys moving the ENTIRE gate just for one dude to ride through.
Kudos! Very good impress with your art and story telling.
Thank you!

Great video! Was waiting for this!
I really hope you do battle of five armies someday.
I will certainly do that one :)
I had no idea the march to the Black Gate was gruelling and dark. Tried putting myself in their shoes and imagine what it would feel like. Yeah morale would be bottomed out when you're thinking some random claiming to be king is marching you into the enemies lands to go die. I need to really read the books lol.
It's pretty rough stuff for sure. I highly recommend the books, they are incredible!
Extremely well done. Thank you.
Thank you for leaving a kind comment!
That's still a pretty high speed of production. Having several units of urukai ready and armed.
The terms and conditions of the Dark Lord are generous. Just being a tributary state and liking and subscribing. The Dark Lord is merciful
Fantastic man, a really good job
Thank you :)
