This is the best industrial sewing machine review (Sailrite heavy duty) Renee Romeo. If you are looking for a heavy duty sewing machine, this product review is for you. I searched for over a year before deciding on this machine and will give you my viewpoint on its operation and ease of use. Sailrite makes two versions of this machine and I own the version that only completes a straight stitch.
Sailrite Heavy Duty is portable!
It's unbelievable that an industrial sewing machine can be made small and portable but Sailrite has done it. This machine is made for sewing canvas sails on sailboats (hence, the name) and needs to be portable and small to fit within the confines of a boat. Homeowners can also take advantage of the machine's smaller size. by fitting it easily into our home sewing rooms. This is one of many deciding features for my purchase. It also happens to be one of the least expensive industrial sewing machines on the market.

I was just sewing a bag out of old sail on my brand new sail rite machine. I am thrilled with it. Note that I am a sailor and I got it take on the boat when we circumnavigate but I am also a home crafter who sews on my great grandmothers 1936 Kenmore and found myself borrowing the industrial machines at our local sail loft enough to justify the purchase.

I know when I sit down, I'll get professional results every time. It's easy to use and requires little maintenance. However, I do recommend keeping it it's case when you're on the water. Just noting here that "Heavy Duty" and "Industrial" are two different animals when it comes to Sailrite sewing machines.
I've had home sewing machines that were labeled "heavy duty" and were anything but...
Been thinking of getting back into more serious, complex leather crafting but I hate hand stitching because I (regretfully) have zero patience and apparently I’m not naturally skilled at it anyway lol. I have lately been wanting to buy a heavy duty, but simple sewing machine and the research I’ve been doing by checking out various online reviews & RUclips vids always seem to point directly towards this particular brand/model as the very best for sewing heavy leather. Unfortunately, I can’t find any sewing shop in my town (Las Vegas) that carries this machine. I always try to see the products that I want to purchase in person before I shell out large sums of moola but in this case, I suppose I’ll just have to take that leap of faith and order it online. Thank you btw, your video is very informative!
Andrew, I feel your pain. I also purchased this without seeing it in person and it took a while to finally make the leap as well. Fortunately, I have no regrets! This machine is basic and I like it that way. It comes with a great manual for thread and needle settings too (I found THAT the most helpful). It took all the guesswork out of all my projects. You will LOVE this machine and kick yourself for not getting it sooner. Make sure you get a nice variety of needles as you will want to experiment with different materials. I'm so excited for you! I make a lot of bags-waxed canvas, duck, denim . . . and have thought this machine would be good for such an application. I have an excellent domestic machine that handles the bags pretty well, but I know it can be a drag on the motor. I thought perhaps this machine would save wear and tear on my Bernina, which I mostly use for clothing and lighter applications, and leave the heavy work to this machine. I do worry about the noise. I suppose if I wear earplugs when I use it, that might work.
James, I agree with you completely! I've worn through a few nice household machines by taxing their motors too much. This machine remains one of my favorite "tools" that I own that gets me professional results. I no longer have skipped stitches and because I can use thicker thread, I have a much more secure project. I don't mind having to wear ear plugs either. It's a good trade-off. nice Video ! over 10 years ago i purchased my very first Ebay purchase and was very Skeptical about it i bought a Chinese Clone Industrial StrenghthWalking Foot Sewing Machine and got exactly as i was promised i bought the machine to make occasional Canvas and Vinyl repairs and items for both my Boats and Vintage cars i’ve done a couple Auto Interiors and numerous Boat projects with my machine and it’s been trouble free since i received the machine in all honesty i can’t see any differences other than color and the name between mine and your machine although yours was a lot more money and mine came with a very inexpensive plastic case that works okay and was Given to me at no extra charge the salesman on the phone did explain to me that it was a cheaply made case and wasn’t up to grade for Airline travel but more of a dust protector for storage which is how i use that part mine is also all metal except for that tensioning knob and it didn’t come with the Sailrites Power Wheel that i can order from Sailrites and put onmy setup if i desire so far as a Hobbyist i just use the machine as i got it delevired to me Sailrites videos on RUclips do claim that they own the molds their machines are made in a higher quality in with more Quality Control than the other machines ? that may be true IDK and i’ve been told that Sailrites does have great Custome Service yet i have net needed any Service o mine as of yet other than basic oiling and cleaning i perform myself

Thank you for saying you bought the machine instead of Sailrite sending it to you for free. I bought the Zigzag version a few years ago and ended up returning it because the pulley was not straight on it. I believe they've corrected that issue since though. I would ask them to be sure before I purchased one again.
Kevin Sews, Haha - I don't have any companies sponsoring me so it's easy to give my opinion of products that I like (or don't). I have been very happy with the performance of the straight stitch version. I could see how this precision machine would be affected by a problem with the pulley. I haven't had issues with my machine so I remain satisfied with my purchase. Maybe take the leap now? Renee
@@ReneeRomeo I've moved on. I have many industrial machines. I bought it for a road trip I had, so I bought a old 1960s classic Singer that did the job just as well. I've also bought many machines to review as well... way too many. LOL

Granny, I so agree! It's difficult to know what works for whom but this is a decent start for the Industrials. I've gone through so many nice home sewing machines because I wasn't using them the way they were intended. This is such a nice upgrade and my home sewing machines thank me! LOL Happy sewing!! Renee
Wow, Renee. Nice to meet you. Great job. Very clear presentation. I own a 39’ sailboat and need to build a new Bimini and enclosure around the cockpit. I have never sown anything more than a button on a shirt in a crisis. I have many mechanical and hand skills. Do you think I could take on a project like that? Or should I pay someone to do it for me? Would the zig zag unit do strait stitching as well? I guess the zigzag is necessary for sails.
Hi Michael, Nice to meet you too! I absolutely think you can take on this project. However, I would weigh the cost of the machine against how often you think you'll use it. I've been on a sailboat ONCE (I now know that I need to do better with that!) and it seems like there's quite a bit of canvas but I don't have any experience with the cost of boat sails and enclosures.
If these components need replacing and/or repair often, I think it's a worthwhile investment. Anyone can sew a straight line and as far as I'm concerned, most projects like yours are just straight stitching. Yes - zigzag machines sew straight or zigzag for sail repair. My zipper 'tutorial' here is the simplest way to install a zipper - period. The other expense is a grommet installation machine (or snap installer). You need to purchase the BEST you can find and they are pricey. Don't skimp with this because you will do a perfect job of sewing and then can ruin the whole thing with an inferior snap/grommet installation. Trust me - I've been there. With the proper machinery and your hand skills, you'd be able to have a moonlight career. I hope this helps your decision. All the best, Renee
This is a type 15 sewing machine with industrial size needles and the walking foot. This is good because common bobbins and associated hardware are available everywhere. The Sailrite is truly a different machine than the cheaper knock-offs like REX, Reliable, etc... Sailrites are American assembled and adjusted with higher quality parts than the knock-offs.
Spend the extra money and you'll never regret it.
TooManyHobbies, Thank you for the clarification. I wish I had mentioned the point about the bobbins and hardware. That's such a good point and really important for a home sewer to have accessories easily available. Heck, I even had bobbins for this machine before I got it. One of my best friends just got this and has increased her business to include heavy duty handbags, all for a (relatively) small investment. Btw - I love your name! Renee

Hi Stop the Philosophical Zombies, Thank you for the kind words! I don't do any heavy duty work that requires a zigzag option so I don't regret not having that feature. If you're into making canvas pieces for boats, it's a good idea though. Also, I don't think the plastic bobbins fit in this machine but even if they did, I think they would be too flimsy for the strength of the machine. I really love this machine! siamese35, Great question! If you think you can work within a 7 inch area, then go for it but I think a larger throat would allow the project to lay flat while you're working on it. Too bad because this machine does a beautiful job with even stitches. I hope this helps! Renee

Just curious which sewing machine for sewing leather purses you chose
I have a question. Do the bobbins seem small for the machine considering the thread weight that is used? I looked it up and this machine uses the exact same bobbins as my Bernina domestic machine. The bobbins hold plenty of thread when I’m using thread from my local fabric shop but I’m afraid than when I start using heavier threads that these bobbins might be considered small and not hold a lot of thread. What is your experience?
LuvMyCardiKids, That's a great observation! It's not as bad as you'd think. It lasts longer than you think. My method is to wind several bobbins at once so that they're ready to go when they run out. @@LuvMyCardiKids Oh, and hey - Another thing is that I usually use monofilament (clear) thread on a large cone for my upholstery work (unless there's top stitching). When you wind this around a regular bobbin, it fits more than household thread because it's thinner in diameter. Winding 4 at a time is a great idea but you can also keep this machine threaded while you're winding bobbins - another great feature!
@@ReneeRomeo that’s how my domestic machine is also. I don’t need to unthread the machine to wind a bobbin. Usually I do have to unthread my machine to wind a new bobbin simply because I normally only have one spool of thread!

I have the same machine and think you have made an accurate and fair review. The only complaint I have about mine is that I can't get a clean stitch with ultra thin nylon. Medium and heavy weight fabrics are great.... THe machine loves them. But ultra light fabrics are different. No matter how much I adjust the tension, the stitch is wrinkled. Have you had the same experience?
Keefe Borden, You're one of the lucky ones to have this great machine! To be fair to Sailrite, their instructional video doesn't show how to sew on lightweight fabrics - probably because it's not the best machine for them. It appears too powerful and is a frustrating process to get the tension just right. But...the way that I approach a fabric or thread problem is to start with the needle first. All of my tension/fabric issues over the years have started with my needle (I wasn't always good at remembering to change them out). I suggest starting with a fresh needle (match it according to the Sailrite chart: fabric/thread/needle), test it on the fabric and adjust tension from there. The way that I handle going from one project to another is to have two machines. I have a an inexpensive Brother sewing machine (Costco) for all my light duty work and the Sailrite for all heavy duty projects. It's great to keep them both set up so that I can just jump from one to another. I hope this helps! Happy sewing, Renee
Renee Romeo ah, thank you so much for the advice. I sew a lot of lamb skin and I haver NEVER been able to get a decent stitch on the Sailrite. I got so frustrated, I stopped using it and just sew on my Janome, which does an amazing job. I was just thinking to get rid of the Sailrite cause I couldn't perfect a decent stitch and look for a Juki industrial machine, hoping to have better luck. Instead, I will try the Sailrite with heavier weight textiles and use the Janome with the lighter ones. I really hope that works cause the machine seems pretty cool. I am relieved to find out it's most likely, "operator error." Thanks a million, my friend! I appreciate you. 😊
@@GigiVandalPop My friend has a Janome that she LOVES for all of her clothing projects. I fear that you would have the same luck with a Juki as you're having with the Sailrite. Don't be afraid to call the Sailrite company for advice if you're not getting the combination right. They helped me when I had a question about an unusual fabric I needed to stitch on. Please try to let me know how you make out. I'm curious to hear if your issue gets solved. And... what do you make with the sheepskin?

Hi Renne what about your tread tension ? I have the same machine and really have issue with unstable tread tension. When a sew zippers with the Sunbrella canvas fabric end up waiving?
Renaissance Cushions, Great question! My experience tells me that that the problem is coming from your needle/thread combination, not the thread tension. Sailrite has a great guide for the proper thread and needle to use when sewing on different fabrics. You'll need a heavier duty needle to get through all the layers of fabric and zipper material than if you were just sewing straight seams. I have only adjusted thread tension slightly from the factory settings for all my heavy duty sewing. I use a fresh needle for every project and have several varieties of different threads to make all my projects look great. I hope this helps! Hi maria, Yes - it's a special foot but very easy to find. You may even find one to fit your machine at your local fabric store. I love the way this looks and it turns out so professional looking. You'll use this method any time you can.

What number of clear thread is this also did you install the zipper with regular foot?
Rigoberto Rivera, I used a #40 medium monofilament thread. It's a good weight for most of the sewing that I do. I also changed out my regular presser foot to a zipper foot to install the zipper. I'm glad you asked. I have a seamstress Aunt who has been doing alterations for years and she's using this method of installing the zipper now. This is after almost 50 years!! Wow. How can I put an emvisible zipper on a dress
maria rojas, My cousin who is a seamstress in the US inserts her zippers into garments the same way now. Sew your seam first, then apply the zipper to the seam, stitch around the zipper and then open up the seam with a seam ripper. It will turn out flawlessly every time. It's a huge time saver when you have a lot of sewing to do. After 40+ years, she's doing it this way now. I hope this method helps you too! All the best, Renee
I am looking at the Sailrite, because it has zigzag. But, its arm is short and it does not have needle feed like the Juki. Its a tough call. I wonder if the arm is too short?
Neil Shubert, I know what you mean. I wouldn't worry about needle feed as much as a short arm. I'm also not familiar with the cost difference between the two at this point either. I have never needed to use my Sailrite for zigzag stitching so I wouldn't miss that feature. What type of projects do you typically work on? That might help my opinion. Renee
Thanks Renee, I mostly sew through Canvas, webbing and velcro, Padding and such. I dont need a portable machine, but sometimes I need to sew 4-500 feet of velcro or webbing in a day. Some pieces are very large, like a sail, but not the thin Dacron they use. The Juki or Consew are from 1300-1700 and its just a little too much right now! I would love to see the Sailrite Fabricator machine!
Neil Shubert, The Sailrite is a bargain compared to Juki or Consew. I've never had a day when I regretted my purchase decision. It has met my expectations every single time. It's super fast too. The portability is just a bonus - I don't NEED to move it around but it's nice to know that I can stuff it in a corner if I need to. I hope these points help steer you to the right decision. If you are sewing wide zigzag on thick fabric/many layers of fabric, the needle will bend enough to strike the needle plate...use a straight stitch or a very narrow zigzag. These are great machines.

Please oil your machine more often than once a year! This is not an oil fed machine. Needs to be oiled internally between each project! Will last much longer.
Sew Fab Alteration shop Monica, You're right to tell me that. Everytime I take the casing off, it looks like everything is oiled just fine. I think it helps that I'm just a hobby sewer and not using it everyday. In the future, I will recommend to oil this more often. Thanks for the input! All the best, Renee

This is somehow your first sewing machine with REVERSE so you can lock your stitch?I have Singers from the 1930's, 40's and 50's that have REVERSE. This is not a "new" feature!

Thank you for the nice introduction to Sailrite machines, but why don't you mention that these machines need a lot of maintenance. You have to oil them at least twice a year at many point, somthing around 24 small areas inside. To do so you have to open the chassis. I think this should know every potential buyer. For my opinion is this in relationship to the high price non acceptable.
Dear Uwe, Thanks for the interest in my wonderful machine. As you know, every sewing machine requires some sort of maintenance from time to time. The frequency really is dependent on how much you use the machine throughout the year. Also, the cover comes off very easily and all the moving parts are accessible. Please don't let that get the way of you considering this lovely machine. Maintenance will take about 5 to 10 minutes of your time - seriously! That's why there's barely a mention of maintenance. Wow. I clean and oil my non-sail rite machine after every project is completed and take it to be professionally cleaned and oiled internally once a year so I don’t consider the ability to service it yourself and only having to do that once or twice a year a lot of maintenance. I guess it’s all a matter of perspective.
Unless you truly need a machine to sew sailcloth and canvas and be able to repair it yourself while under sail…

They are not made in the US either China or Taiwan for your information, I have one that zig zags and they are a nice machine, a little crud but they do the job.
Hi Anthony, I'm surprised that you're seeing that. I edited that out a couple of years ago (misinformed) and when I play it, video doesn't show it anymore. Sailrite is the best! But, pricey!
Azcharlie2009, It's a pricey machine for sure but I think worth every penny to make DIY projects look like a pro did them. I think the machine is actually more responsible for making my fit and finish look flawless than my skill set. I bet others will find that to be true as well. Definitely a loud motor!
Spartaues, Agreed! I always use a pair of ear plugs when running it. It's my only bad critique of this wonderful machine. But... without the loud motor noise, it also wouldn't be as powerful as it is. It's a trade off that I can live with. Do you agree? Renee
@@ReneeRomeo I agree. A powerful motor is nice on a sewing machine. Ive run older singer models with the tiny belt and motors, and they were very finicky, just not smooth at all. I wonder if the motors in the larger sailrite machines are as loud. I've watched other reviews on the larger sailrite machines with the full table. And all those reviews highly praised the motors power and ability to gently start off.
@@spartaeus That is absolutely true! It's smooth from start to finish. I haven't encountered any finicky-ness about this machine at all. It's been a straight-forward experience for me. I really don't know anything about the larger Sailrite machines but I imagine that the noise level would be similar. As an example, I have a kitchenaid mixer with a small motor and a Bosch mixer with a large motor and the noise level is much greater on the Bosch but I can do so more with the Bosch that I wouldn't (or couldn't) dare do with the Kitchenaid.
There are a couple of drive gears that are plastic. This is not an all metal machine.

Not American made. Made in China and sent to Sailrite. Supposedly they then check them before sending them out.
Hi DannyB1954, You're correct.
That may have been true ten years ago, but now Sailrite does a whole lot more than "check them". They have their own parts made which are higher quality than the "clones", then they build the machines and tune them before "sending them out". Sailrite also has a great support system for their customers.
I couldn't afford a Sailrite, so bought a REX and have had a good time fixing all the poor quality "workmanship" of that cheap Chinese clone. It's a hobby machine so it didn't make sense to pay the extra money for better quality.
I have one of these. Could never get a straight stitch. Bought a Juki. 3.5 times the money but the Juki works.
