Remember hearing this song, age 12 or 13, on the radio, when it was new. The hi parts & vocals - amazing. When he sang "Sacrifice," even as a kid, I sensed the greatness. And then the new school reboot with Dua Lipa? Both 🤌.

Bro's, You'll love his "Your Song", "Bennie And The Jets", "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" and "I'm Still Standing". And about 20 more. "Your Song" was his first hit song in 1970. Elton(music) and Bernie Taupin(words), what a combination! "Sacrifice" was from 1989.

When my ex husband left me alone with my 10 years old daughter I knew she was hurting but she couldn’t explain why until I realized that she was hurting because she felt responsible for him leaving. We were in therapy but when I actually heard the words of this song along with the video I offered it to her for her 13th birthday. It was amazing how through music my daughter healed and was able to let guilt go (it wasn’t you my girl, it’s two hearts living, in two separate worlds). She’s almost 21 now and she still goes to her comfort zone (this song and video) and smiles with tears of joy in her eyes. She was and never be a sacrifice at all.
    Love,
    Lu

You might consider ;"My Father's Gun", "Talking Old Soldiers", "Burn Down The Mission", "Madman Across The Water" or "Holiday Inn" for some great storytelling in song. Travel well on your journey.

Hooray, someone reacting to an Elton Song that's not Daniel, Your Song or Rocket Man! Thank you! (I'm a lifelong fan, have seen him in concert four times, going again in November, fingers crossed.)
Those songs are fantastic, of course, but he's done so much more.
I've always thought that this song is about someone being tempted to stray from the marriage but resisting the temptation (maybe for children, as in the video) because they have to, for duty, but I know other people have different ideas. Bernie Taupin, who writes the words for most of Elton's songs, can be a bit obscure.

You Tube cut off part of my text. I did say that the Sinead O'Connor version is beautiful too.
The three songs I mentioned above are 'early period' Elton - 'Sacrifice' is 'middle period' - can I suggest a song from 'later period' Elton? 'Home Again' from 2013, official video. I don't think you'll regret it. But everyone will have their suggestions, and we could fill up RUclips with them!

I know this isn´t your usual type of music, but there is a song that let me loose feeling for time up to 15 min after the piece was over. It´s from the hybrid symphony "seven", the piece is called "Return to sender" by Thomas Bergersen. The album "seven" is about life with "return to sender" as death. I my self had a situation in my life where I felt like dying and completely leaving this world and all its boundrys and it was a space beyond imagination in harmony. Maybe this song has just this effect on me due to my experience, but this song is really this feeling of infinity in music.

Many were quite good, but his 70s stuff was just really special. (I feel the same with Hall and Oates - - 70s better than 80s.)

This isn't a bad song I suppose but Elton's best period was undoubtedly between 1969-1974. Try 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' or 'Candle In The Wind' from the album 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road'......and don't pick the wrong versions guys.

Please react to "Piano Man" by Billy Joel. Such a GREAT story telling style song. Elton John and Billy Joe used to tour together.

Evelyn from Patreon here: You are getting some negative comments because of the whole “Seventies vrs. Eighties” thing when it comes to music. Many people who LOVE sixties and seventies music HATE eighties music because of, what they feel, is “over-production”, “wall of sound” and all the new special effects from synths etc. And of course, the eighties was the time of the “power ballad” which some people love and some hate. This song was released in 1989, long after Elton John’s heyday and peak. For me, Elton was a HUGE part of the soundtrack of my life in the seventies, and several of his albums (Yellow Brick Road, Captain Fantastic to name two) got almost continuous play. By the eighties, I wasn’t buying his albums anymore, but certainly heard his radio releases. I won’t criticize this song just because it is so obviously an eighties song in the power ballad tradition. It stands on its own merits. The melody is gorgeous, the words are deep and emotive...his voice is so lovely. Objectively, I do not understand denigrating it, even if you prefer his early seventies work.
That being said, I REALLY HOPE that you go down yet another rabbit hole with Sir Elton John. (I know, there are so many rabbit holes, aren’t they? Personally, I cannot imagine how daunting it would be to try to cover all the great music for those decades...). But hey, you guys are young and have the time....;-)

Several of his songs from this time are my favorites by him and I have listened to him since the beginning. I like this one and also "The One" and "The Last Song".

@@OldBoiler62 Right!! I've listened as well since inception. I too like a variety of EJ .. not limiting myself to any certain years, genres or types of instruments played .. I mean my ears like what they like. Good to know I'm not the only one who truly appreciates all types & eras of music. Nice chatting with you "good tune" buddy .. wink. Merry Christmas 🎄
