I have my own relationship to this song and the lyrics; my only son Daniel died at age 31 in Sept 2015 and this song is exactly how I feel about my son, from "I miss Daniel, I miss him so much" to " I can see Daniel waving goodbye, oh God it looks like Daniel" to "Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky"...my son battled deep depression and mental illness and he too had his scars that never healed. He died as a result of alcoholism but that didn't define his life-- he was a wonderful, intelligent man who always tried to help others but could not help himself when his depression swallowed him so deeply. I miss him every single day and this song hits me right in the heart every time but also makes me feel close in spirit to my son. His birthday is March 7, he would have been 37 this year. I was only 21 when I had him and in a way we grew up together, both of us loving music and literature and talking for hours about both.

@@willasacco9898 My deep condolences on the loss of your wife. In the past 8 years I've lost 7 family members, including my mother, but none of them, as sad as I was, compares to the devastation I felt when Daniel died. I miss them all, my sister-in-law passed the year after Daniel and I know my brother had such a hard time; they were married 42 years when she died, they were in their teens when they wed and had 4 kids, 18 grandkids and 2 great grandkids! My sis-in-law was like my sister, she was just 59 when she died, same age I am turning this year. I am so sorry your wife endured such suffering, I feel she is whole again now.

When Elton wrote the music for this song, he chopped off the last verse because he thought the song was already too long. The deleted verse explained that "Daniel" was a Vietnam vet who returned home to the farm after the war, couldn't find peace, and decided to leave America and go to Spain.

  • @jennhurl

It's one of the most amazing relationships in music ever. Bernie Taupin would write the lyrics to a song & give them to Elton. Elton would sit down at the piano & could just hear the melody in his head & begin writing & playing it. People toss around and word genius- but if THAT'S not genius - I don't know what is. Great reaction George & Patrick! Love y'all!

Daniel is my name and my son's name. My son is autistic. This song was written about a true story that was printed in the newspaper about a Vietnam veteran who comes home to USA with problems from the war. I am a Vietnam era Veteran, and my sister always told me this song reminded her of me. Daniel went away to Spain to get away from the conflict about Vietnam in the US during the late 60's and early 70's. He had PTSD from the war and didn't want to be reminded of it. His 'eyes have died' refers to his depression. Beautiful song.

Elton John has a great catalogue of songs. I wasn't sure what Daniel was about either so checked it out. Apparently it's about a guy going back to a small town in Texas from the Vietnam War and they treat him like a hero which is lovely. However he just wants to go back to his farm and try and have a normal life. Yes, it's a very poignant song as quite a lot of Elton John songs are. Candle in the Wind and Rocket Man are great and then you've got a more upbeat song like I'm Still Standing which is fab too. There were so many superb songs coming from the 70s, we were very lucky to have so much really good music which is still appreciated today. I really don't know if today's music will survive the same amount of time? Maybe some will, who knows? Great reaction, guys, thanks so much.

Yeah, it’s interesting that according to Bernie Taupin, this is one of Elton’s most misunderstood songs. If I recall correctly, Bernie said that Elton ended up leaving out some of the original lyrics he’d written and apparently those lyrics were somewhat critical to understanding the song properly. Still a great song for sure!

Elton was my mother’s favorite. His early stuff is so intertwined with my memories of her that I cannot separate them.
“Daniel” is from Elton’s 1973 album ‘Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player”, so a lot older than you thought. You mention melody often, when I can’t help but wonder if you really mean LYRICS - the words of a song. ‘Melody’ is a component of the MUSIC. Bernie Taupin is Elton’s long-time collaborator. He wrote the lyrics to “Daniel” & many of their early hits. One of you was correct about the meaning of the song. It IS about a Vietnam veteran returning to his small hometown in Texas.

The way these songs were written is interesting. Bernie Taupin writes a bunch of poems, and Elton goes though them in the morning, picks the ones he likes, and spends about 15 minutes put each to music. He then plays the first song for the band on a piano, and the band figures out what they want to do with their own instruments, with no input from Elton at all. Then into the studio together. They mess around for a couple of minutes, and then...play the song. Usually they do this 2-5 times until they get it to where they're happy with it...then on to the next song. On average they had 4 songs a day written, recorded, mixed, overdubs, vocals/backing vocals, everything.
'Daniel' was done in one take. What you hear on the album was their first try.

Very emotional song. A soldier going to fight in the Vietnam War. Personal to Elton’s writing partner Bernie Taupan.

My favorite Elton John melody is "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road." You will love it!
The original version of "Candle in the Wind," which was about Marilyn Monroe, is great also (it was later rewritten for Princess Diana).

Elton writes the music, and Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics for most of his biggest hits and albums.

    “Your Song” and “Tiny Dancer”

Elton John (Reginald Dwight) has told the story of him and Freddie Mercury and sometimes David Bowie staying up till the morning just blowing their brains out on blow. And Elton said (to paraphrase) it was always Freddie who would be last man standing, giving it the old (to paraphrase again) "Oh c'mon darling just one more line". Not condoning cocaine abuse but these were different times and musical personalities that will never happen again. That complete rock star persona that you've conquered the world couldn't help but make you think you could have and do anything. Complete decadence. Cheers, the canadian Queen nut.

Guys, you are on such a roll, doing the best of the best! This is such a beautiful song and I think you were both right. It kind of did have a Sacrifice feel to it and I see from other comments that it was about a Vietnam vet. Be sure to check out Someone Saved My Life Tonight. Great song!

Bros, his lyrical partner, Bernie Taupin, is the songwriter. Bernie has been writing with Elton since he was 17. At 17 he wrote the major hit, Your Song. Which is a classic. You need to do it. Elton writes the compositions

Elton wrote the music and Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics...They made it a habit to never work together, in the same room, during the writing process...Taupin would write the words to multiple songs, leave them on Elton's piano, then he would pick and choose from them, work out a melody, and write the music..They have done it this way for over 50 yrs..It's worked out for them so far, wouldn't you agree?..Btw, this song was recorded in '73..That era was probably their most productive time.

When Elton wrote the music for this song, he chopped off the last verse because he thought the song was already too long. The deleted verse explained that "Daniel" was a Vietnam vet who returned home to the farm after the war, couldn't find peace, and decided to leave America and go to Spain.
    Lyricist: Bernie Taupin
