    Very good! I bought one of the Stanley saws! I was very surprised this cuts great! Very smooth, very easy to start cuts very fast and the handle is very comfortable! It's a great saw out cuts every other hand saw I owns and I have some saws from famous makers.
    I can't say enough good about this saw and I only paid 11 dollars that's amazing! Thank you.

      Hi John, I love antique tools but these new saws are a joy to use and work very well. I hope you like it as much as I do! Thanks! 😃👍

    Good review John . Watching your review , I counted the push/pulls after your start and that FAT MAX saves 33% effort . As it only took 20 push/Pulls and the others 30 + . I don't own a saw like that anymore . But if I were in the Market for one . I'd be getting the "FAT MAX" based on your demonstration . Thanks .

      Hi Dave! You know I needed a saw for upstate where I don't have electricity and bought the FatMax over a year ago- that saw just glides thru wood and is actually fun to use! You are right, it was the easiest to use- those gullets that Irwin added just hangs up the saw... Glad to hear from you Dave! 😃👍

      Irwin took 26, not over 30; but still worse...

    Thanks for the demo of what's out there, ScoutCrafter I don't need a new saw right now, which is a good thing because I'm too old to change.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  7 лет назад +1

      Ricopolico - You and me both! The problem occurred because I was upstate without electricity and had to build a ramp from pressure treated lumber... My "older" saws wouldn't make it half way thru the lumber but that new Stanley made it a joy to use... Still electricity is nice... 😃👍

    I have a saw like those too and I am really impressed with the cutting and accuracy of the saw. I can keep a straighter cut line with the newer saws then the older ones, Thanks for the review. I will get a Stanley next time.

    Used a Fatmax for first time a year ago or so. Totally impressed me for a little saw. Busted a 2x10 in half for transport. Like butter.

      Hello Baggins1, I am with you 100%!!! I am a fan of older made quality tools but when it comes to saw technology, my old saws are just wall hangers! I was helping out with a Boy Scout Eagle project a few months ago and I brought down the Irwin saw, well that saw was used by everyone for everything and everyone loved it! Great saw for the money!!!!! Thanks very much!!!!!!!

    Interesting review... I agree that the teeth running into the handle looks careless. I recently picked up a BAHCO saw on sale from Amazon and it is incredible. Quite a thick blade and the one I have has coarse teeth but it flies through lumber. I recently used it to go through some 4x4’s and was amazed.
    Like you, I prefer to spend my money on ‘Made in USA’... and I say that as an immigrant from Europe (so might be expected to be snotty about only buying German tools). I prefer to buy stuff made domestically because I believe we should help our neighbors. I appreciate it when tool stores offer a choice so those of us can spend an extra buck or two if we want to and are able to. Having said that, I recently wanted a stillson-type pipe wrench and went to the Homeless Despot and they had a choice of US-made Rigid or an import. The latter was a *lot* cheaper but felt it. Horrendous flashing on the forging, coarse knurling on the nut and sticky action. I chose the Ridgid but appreciated the chance to choose. Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to spend a bit extra for quality.

    Is there any other saw that is superior to the old handyman series of stanley, in my experience I think there is non, i would not trade it to the new ones.

    Irwin blade, 27 cuts. (31 if you count those 4 shorty cuts) Stanley blade, 20 cuts. I think the numbers make it pretty clear.

    I have a fatmax, works great to cut up firewood without grabbing a chain saw

  • @jusb1066
    @jusb1066 7 лет назад +1

    I have the stanley (called fatmax here for their premium range) tenon saw, its really smooth, i certainly dont bother with old saws you have to hand sharpen, but have an irwin in a floorboard saw, i cant fault either to be honest, but the smoothness of both taught me, dont buy an unbranded saw, as that was awful rough and semi blunt, and got thrown out very soon.. your irwin seems more suited out in the garden tools! my dad left me a bahco special edition sharpenable tenon saw, the fact was, i hated it , it was too heavy and the teeth were too grabby, so i sold it on ebay, it was a pretty expensive saw (over £50 i think)

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  7 лет назад +1

      Jusb1066 - To me the best part of RUclips is being able to get not only instructional videos but honest reviews. You are right about the unbranded saws, you might get lucky or you might get junk. I remember years back an old timer told me that "Anything meant to do multiple tasks has to compromise" and I think that's the problem with this Irwin, by adding the gullets it made the saw choppy and grabby compared to the Stanley. The shame of it is when you are in the store and are holding both you can't test them out. I'm surprised about the Bahco but maybe it was designed for a specific task or wood. What I can't understand is how some people will swear by a tool and when you try it the performance is poor. That's why I always read the negative comments on Amazon too! Thanks much for adding your thoughts on this! 😃👍

    I'll go for stanley fat max

  • @frenstcht
    @frenstcht 4 года назад

    You started the Irwin wrong. It has higher TPI in the nose to make starting easier.
    It's hard to tell, but the Durable looked like it's ground for rip cutting rather than cross cutting, which would make it an unfair comparison. Either way, how do the other saws rip cut?

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  4 года назад +1

      I must have twenty old says and even when they are "sharp" nothing cuts like the new saws... I love old tools but when it comes to hand saws the new ones are a joy to use! I brought the Irwin to a Boy Scout eagle project and twenty boys walled on that saw for a few days straight and everyone was amazed at how well it cut... They are cheap too! I am totally sold on them! =D

      Hello Joe! You are so right! I love old tools but I have to say these new saws work just wonderful! Not too expensive and cut great! The only thing is you can't sharpen them but who has time for that!? LOL Thanks!!!

  • @VS-ce5os
    @VS-ce5os 5 лет назад +1

    The new saws have cross cutting teeth, made for cutting across wood grain and is a no brainer on random wood the durable has rip saw teeth to cut with the grain. The new saws today have super hard teeth which are usually too hard to resharpen...made to throw out when blunt unlike the older saws which also gave a cleaner cut.the difference is a craftsman woodworking tool to make fine furniture with quality solid wood and a weekend knockup tool to use on MDF, ply and fibreboard.they both have their place but are not comparable.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 лет назад

      VS- You're right, these saws definitely have their place but in all honesty, the older saws are almost always dull and for 99% of the time are not in good shape.. Real woodworkers make up 000.1% of the population. In ten years it will be half that... =) Thanks!!!

    You missed one of the best features of these Tool Box class of Saws the handle is 90° and 45° to the back edge of the blade so it a speed square built in
    In the old days carpenters would polish the blade bodys so you can see a reflection of the line and can tell if it perpendicular to the board

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 лет назад

      Walt, you are so right! Like having a speed square all the time! I really like these saws!!!! Thanks!!!!

    Honestly those gullets cut into the Irwin handsaw blade are useless. There’s no point or purpose as far as I’m aware

  • @adrianovergara2942
    @adrianovergara2942 5 лет назад

    I have checked all your videos but there's nothing on there that actually you used those saws. I think if you want to make an impression on how good the hand saw is there's atleast two videos of you using it to build something. I know you will say that you're using it of camera but hey everyone needs a proof sometimes.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 лет назад +1

      Adriano- I don't do many wood working videos but honestly I use this saw all the time! The new saws are cheap and really work well! Last year the Scouts were building a project for a park and I brought along this saw just incase, well it didnt take long before all the kids were using it and loving it! Now the only con I could find is that since the teeth are so sharp and hard they can break if the saw is tilted. I don't know who did it or how it was done but two teeth broke off on one saw. It still works but that is an issue to know about. I really am a big fan of these new saws and think you will like them too!!!!!! Thanks!

  • @Mr71paul71

    I have to disagree the old saws are far better, not least in the fact you can easily sharpen them. The new saws feel like toys after using old wood handled saws

      Fare enough than but by the time I’m your age I won’t be able to find these vintage saws because I’m only 14 and I appreciate vintage tools over new tools for they seem to be better in my opinion but I’m an Aussie and we are stubborn as stubborn can be 👍
