      @@bobbytoodle8912 Because it's very similar to the sound a horse's hooves makes when it is running.
      The term was being used in rock mags by the mid-1970s to describe the rhythm that bands like Nazareth and Deep Purple were using. This in turn influenced Steve Harris of Iron Maiden to incorporate a lot of it into their albums.

      @@MCLooyverse Here's another way to say it, if you're confused by the above description: 3 evenly spaced notes played within another note-length.
      Example: 3 notes played over the length of a quarter note.

      @@jddrawz Sorry, I didn't mean to do that. I'm not sure how I missed that. Now I think that description is too specific though, with quarter-note triplets taking up *two* beats (in 4/4), instead of one, but still being triplets.
      Edit: Regarding your first response, my example would be three notes played inside the space of a dotted half. Unless you mean only notes with length that is an inverse power of 2 times the whole-note length, then my example would still fit your definition.

      Oh my gosh, I try to tell people this who took previous lessons from other teachers or got misinformation all the time. I was just going over this literally yesterday with a student on how this is not a triplet. I will admit, I am still learning how to teach as its an ever learning experience, I am starting to realize how many people unfortunately get taught wrong. I had a drum student who was 12 and was taking lessons for 2 years from another school before they shut down. In an 8 week span of group classes which are only once a week we covered more than what he learned taking 1 hour every week. I had one student that came from another state and started band locally middle school. He was failing band(had been playing music 5 years already). He took 1 month with me and raised to a B by the end of the grade period. Now he is maintaining an A in band. Now I am not bragging about myself but it feels good when I see students get happy and pursue music. Now this kid is working on Jazz and Pop drumset as well as Xylophone. All the parents and students keep saying I am a great teacher. Truthfully I tell them, I try my best but I am still learning myself. I am by far not a know it all and I am not afraid to admit when an 8 year old girl can play Good Times Bad Times better than I can. So long story short, research before you teach and always be humble and connect with students.

      No no no & no. He explains it perfectly.
      You can use 1e& 2e& if you want but in a 4/4 bar it would be 1e& 2e& 3e& 4e& AS LONG AS the notes are evenly spaced 3/2. THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF TRIPLETS.The vocab I learned was 1 ah da 2 ah da because the longer vowel sounds help you visualize & thus physically draw out the space between the notes. Practicing with the click helps solidify the mental & muscle feeling of how to think about the notes & then play them. Also: Nowhere in this video does he play 5/4.

    • @TheKatieBusby
      @TheKatieBusby 3 года назад +2

      @@MarshallDavidson are you disagreeing with the content of this video? We’re talking about the guy in the first like 10 seconds. The example he uses starting at 0:05 shows him playing 3 sixteenths in a 5 beat pattern, which is where the 5/4 came from. I was counting the 16th he’s playing as “1e&” because he’s not playing triplets. And yes, I have a degree in percussion performance so I’m pretty sure I know how to subdivide triplets. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    In my experience; after teaching this thousands of times with the same problem. The issue is people struggle with hearing in three (most likely due to an over-consumption of popular genres of music). So they play a ghosted fourth beat not realizing they're subconsciously counting in four. The result is "one, two three, (WAIT), one, two three, (WAIT)."

    Was definitely not aware that people didn't know this. Not sure why this was recommended to me but ok. I suppose the easiest way to explain it is that a triplet is three thirds of a note. That note can be any length I suppose but typically it would be a quarter note or smaller, else you might as well just change time signatures for a measure unless it doesn't make sense in the context or if it would mess with the accents. There's also quintuplets, septuplets, and all other prime-uplets but their use is less common, perhaps due mainly to the perception of timing something so precise.
