The fact that you've been using such "old" triggers and module is really a testament to how good MIDI technology has been for a long time. Verrrrry neet.
Ahhhh Yuuuur! I came to the trigger stuff through a cheap e-kit for my kids. Now I'm using EZDrummer2 and it's fucking amazin how great the sound, more precisly the dynamics actually is/are.
Nice job with the triggers. I also use them when I mix live bands. Few people know that you can convert midi cable to XLR and run it through an analogue snake to FOH and convert xlr back to midi then into your interface to control the drum software (Like EZ drummer) from FOH.
Sorry about that. Let me try and elaborate... Would you like to have triggers on your drums for a live performance with zero latency? Like a sick rock band or whatever. You connect the triggers on the drum kit, hookup the triggers to your drum midi module or whatever creates the midi notes, then into your midi usb interface. Open your DAW, create an instrument track and load up you favorite drum VST (Slate drums/Superior Drummer, etc.) then Arm record or enable live input monitoring on that track, so that any midi input from your triggers, trigger the plugin. (As if your hitting notes on a midi keyboard to hear the sounds). Whenever the drummer plays, you have your super nice sounding drums comping out of that PC. Then hook the output of your interface to your FOH console. But here's the thing, many times you would want the PC running the DAW with the drum software next to you at FOH so you can tweak the velocity curves, sensitivity etc. instead of running up and down. That creates a problem because the drum module that create the midi notes is usually located next to the drums on stage. Some drum modules have both MIDI outs and a USB out built it. Problem #1: You can't run a USB cable from the drum module on stage to the PC at FOH, simply cause USB cables can't run that far. Another idea is to run a straight old MIDI cable from the module (midi out) to FOH, into a MIDI/usb interface into the PC, but then there's problem #2: you can't run a MIDI cable to FOH simply because such long MIDI cables don't exist and most "pro's" will tell you that you MIDI can't transmit that far. BUT HERE'S THE THING, IT CAN! And you don't need a 150ft MIDI cable. MIDI cables have 5pins. BUT ONLY 3 OF THEM ARE USED. Like since it's invention. It never used all 5 pins. The two outer pins do nothing. They only created the 5-pin MIDI connector so to not confused it with other things like XLR, etc. So here's what you do: You take an old 3ft MIDI cable. Cut it in half, and solder an XLR male connector to the one and a an XLR female connector to the other (you will have to open the MIDI connector to see which wires go to which pins, or use a multi-meter). You end up with 1x MIDI to Male XLR, and 1x MIDI to Female XLR. (So that they can plug back into each other and still be the same MIDI cable). Then hookup the MIDI-Male XLR from the Drum module into the Analogue snake which goes all the way to FOH. There you take the corresponding channel and hookup the other half, the Female XLR to MIDI. And voila! You have MIDI signals at FOH (and yes, MIDI can transmit that far!) Plug the MIDI end into your MIDI/USB interface and into your DAW. Now you have control of the Drum software while standing at the sound desk. If you REALLY want, I can make a video. But that should explain it.
@@christiaanbezuidenhout6984 Why you must do this if you can connect the Audio/Midi Interface stereo output to the FOH (as you name it) straight and have sound for the Live recording or playing?Isn't that possible ?If not you can take sound from the headphones out of the interface too.The Audio cables can go far from the set easily. You need only the 2 L/R channel cables and all roll good!NO??
oh holy crap. i had a ddrum e-drum kit back in 2002. loved that thing. it was wicked loud for an e-kit and had the most real sounding samples (for the time).
You always mention your wrist pains. When I used to play (cry) I wore those tennis players wrist bands. It helps A LOT. Once I started using those, I never could play without it. I always felt that my wrists were unprotected and I felt a great deal of the shock that the stick produces when it hits the drum. Idk, maybe you already tried it, but, it's good to know. mkay?
I'm not going to lie. I actually really like your Raid commercials in your videos. The way you talk about it I can tell you've played it a long time and really like the game. I might actually check it out!
I bought the same exact setup like 5 years ago lol. DDTi is just an interface, not technically a module, like you said. I think you should stress to folks you have a shit ton of those moon gel type things on your drum heads which is super key in my opinion to preventing the sustain that can create false and double triggers. without those moon gels you would be getting a shit ton of false and double triggers no matter what kind of settings you use on the DDTi. at least that is my experience, you need to "treat" the kit with as much as attention as you put into adjusting your settings on the trigger interface. Without moon gels I think this issue is only exaggerated in something as fast as death metal.
Thanks for this, I have an acoustic kit with mesh heads, that was super easy to set up/trigger, but I’ve been having a hell of a time with my actual acoustic kit with normal heads
@@tombrown4074 no, I have a converted kit with mesh heads that have internal triggers, and it’s pretty flawless.. I figured these on my acoustic kit would work the same, but they’re def harder to get accurate
@@MajykOyster666 Actually you're right, I'd also forgotten that the color of them affects timbre through optical modulation of the carrier signal, which in turn is processed by EZDrummer as an aftertouch source with filter cutoff as the target. It's the same way that my midi keyboard (also a trigger for samples) has a defined top-end and rich lower-mids, with a presence bump at around 2kHz, because its made of tone plastic.
