This is what I've been looking for some years. An interesting data of France made fighters againts US made. The point is no matter how sophisticated your equipment is, it is still can be outrun by smart and best prepared tactics.
As an Iraqi I want to say amazing video! Even though wars are brutal they are interesting and nice to learn about. The Mirage F1 is one of my favourite jets and this video about it paired with the fact its about the history of my country is awesome.
It's rarely a question of who is flying the "better" aircraft, but rather of being in the right place at the right time and knowing how to exploit the opportunity.
Exactly, there are dozens of factors which decide the outcome of air battles. A more capable aircraft gives you more options but nothing is guaranteed. I laughed my head off when on some videos, some people tried to 'prove' that it was impossible for an aircraft to shoot down another simply because the victim belonged to a more recent generation.
And this is why you need AWACS. Notice Iraq had first hand knowledge of this tactic, but did not use it successfully in either gulf war. A friend of mine told the Iranians were using the Tomcats as a form improvised AWACs.
As for the F-14s, everyone in the West believed that that's all the Iranians were able to use their F-14s. New info emerged in the mean time but the mini-AWACS role is confirmed.
They were not able to use in gulf war because of overwhelming air power of all sorts, radar jamming, EW suits, AWACS, lot lot fighters of modern era. They were no match of allied forces. Still they scored hits.
I heard somewhere that one of the bigger problems iranian Tomcats had initially was that their RWR could not recognise the French radar signals as threats, so they could actually be snuck up to, locked on and hit... but that was later somehow fixed...
Yes, not just Tomcsts but all Iranian aircraft. Their RWR was hugely superior to those used by Soviet planes in Iraqi service but not programmed to fight Western opponents.
an/alr-45/50 was not desgined to identify aerial threats it only showed pre-identified SAM threats such as SAM-6 ,5 ,2 ....etc it never showed what type of enemy aircraft is but only an indication of an incoming Aerial Interceptor
Another problem was the other missiles the Iranians had. Other than the Phoenix, the F-14s were stuck with rear aspect AIM-9J and older AIM-7E that were inferior to what the Iraquis had in their late MiG-23s and Mirage F1s (R-60MKs, R-24R, Magic 1, Super 530F). In regards to RWR all were in a rough spot, the ALR-45 in the F-14A wasn't optimized for air to air threats of any type as Cipher commented, their F-5s had no RWR at all and the F-4E would have had similar strobes type RWR as the one in the early F-14A. On the other hand SPO-10 in the MiG-21s and 23s can't tell the threat type and early F1EQs had the CSF-Thomson BF RWR which is similar in presentation to the SPO-10 (just four warning lights with very little threat classification). Only the very last batch of F1s the Iraquis got, the EQ-6, had a modern digital RWR with threat library classification.
Once more showing that there is more to fighter aviation history than Top Gun mock ups and dogfight videos. Thanks a lot Showtime, I am sure it takes lots of time to: research the combats and history, learn how to fly these steel beasts in DCS, record and edit the video. Lovely content as usual and very inspiring (I am a minis player and have re-enacted several combats thanks to your info). Keep it up!

Beautiful recreation of the Iranian F-14 Tomcats. A nice narration and recreation of an interesting & overlooked war. The F-5 Tiger 🐯 looks really good too!!
Hope to see more Iran Iraq reenactments. This was a very interesting air war. Both countries were huge and the defense of oil infrastructure was a key objective. Plus shipping lanes, airfields, cities, and front line troops, fighters were spread thin. Did the Iranians run low on Sparrows too? I hope we get a Foxbat module to complete the theater. And a Cobra too of course, Iranians used them well. With the Phantom, will you be able to depict the H3 raid? Lots of refueling over Turkey at 200 feet 😀.
There will be more focus on this conflict, especially when F-4 comes out. We already have the H3 airbase complex on the map. Now, low level refueling might be hard or impossible to do, I'm nor sure if AI can even do it.
Air refuelling at 200ft? Only the Iranians high on their superior opium can tell such a tall one! The H3 raid -as unveiled later- took off from bases in Syria.
Every new tactics is the most effective at the beginning. To be objective it needs to be mention F-14 in Iranian service had many weaknesses: best US-trained pilots had been executed or jailed, most of its avionics including RWR and radars was barely operational or didn't work at all due to lack of spare parts and ground crew expertise, most effective weapon supply has been depleted early in the war and US obviously didn't sand more. At the same time Iraqi aircrafts were using their best crews, had constant flow of spare parts and effective weapon and properly skilled ground technicians and working avionics, radars and other systems. There is very good book written by Iranian F-14 pilot describing this interesting stories from 1st person perspective.

Then he got drafted into a big lead building shared with Boeing and built the B2. Iranians coped without support, and the Reagan Administration sent them parts for Hostages to secure release. During the war I witnessed a very low-flying one swiftly traverse the sky as we were on the road towards the south. Remarkable speed, disappearing from view within seconds. Eventually radio broadcast informed us that it had been downed. Possibly the F1 was returning from a bombing run over Tehran.
you should consider doing a video on the massive Battle of El mansoura over egypt during the October 1973 war....Egyptian MiG pilots appear to have toughened up remarkably and losses on both sides appear equal if both sides are honest....one Egyptian pilot, Mohhammed adoub blew a A-4 apart with 30 mm cannon at close range and flew through the debris field and went down himself.......The egyptian air force celebrates this defensive victory to this day
I will cover that story. But there are two very important 'ingredients' which are to be released in DCS. The F-4E Phantom and the Sinai map. I could emulate the real locations with some other desert map but Phantom is a necessity. Exact dates of the release are not yet known.
I saw another video which showed the Iranian pilots were very inventive and became aces. Iran had lost American support for their planes so the Iranians were still able to overcome Iraqis with hobbled airplanes.
My compliments ! I always wait for your videos with impatience. May I dare a suggestion for new videos ? I was thinking to the war in Libya of 2011. Ok, no aerial duels ... but the re could be, I suppose, ground attacks or CAS missions of interest to be re-enacted by you. What do you think ?

Let's be honest though considered a mid gen 3, the f1 was just a early generation 4 fighter. Any nation that flew it loved its ability to dog fight, though it always found lacking in over the horizon engagements.
Nah it wasn’t an early 4th generation fighter and shouldn’t be considered as such. It‘s capabilities were similar to the F-4 or the Mig 23. It was vastly outclassed by any 4th generation fighter. The Tomcats kill were simply down to superior Iraqi tactics. When not met in an ambush the F-14 absolutely crushed the F1 and achieved a much much higher kill ratio over it.
Mirage F.1 and MiG-23 are the definition of 3rd generation fghters. Trying to solve the same problems of delta wing of 2nd generation fighters like Mirage III or MiG-21 with different ways, MiG-23 with variable geometry and Mirage F.1 by incorporating swept wing. Both are fascinating.
@@JR-ut2ne far enough. Though I feel like maybe the Israeli dagger and f-5 tiger 2 would be a more fair comparison than the f4 phantoms. As shown by its excellent career in the iranian, Turkish, Israeli, and hellenic airforce.
It actually had some limited BVR capability already by the time it was introduced in service with R-530 but the latter proved quite ineffective. Super 530 was a very effective missile in both versions so I guess even in the 90s Mirage F1 could be still considered as a front line fighter.
I don't think they shot down most of them. That would mean over 50 percent and it doesn't seem so. Btw, fact that I produce a video focusing on one particular element of a conflict doesn't mean that I don't understand some other elements of it.
@@showtime112 probably more a dozen than 30, simple maths the iraqi lost during the war around 20 Mirage F1, hard to believe that the Tomcat scored every kill.
It is in a real war that we see what weapons are made of. Without a doubt, it was clear how vulnerable the F-14 became without all the support structure it had in the US Navy. And what was true for it would be true for the F-15, the F-16 and the F-18 in similar situations.
Yes but on the other hand, it is almost unbelievable that Iranians managed to keep them operational and effective for so long. Until early 2000s, the consensus in the West was 'Iranian Tomcats were hardly operational, used only as mini-AWACS'.
@@showtime112 That is the miracle of reverse engineering. And that can only be explained with investment and development in one sector. In the old days no one would dare say that China today operates the stealth fighters with the most powerful engines in the world.
The Iraqi Air Force had the air superiority over Iranian air force since the first day of the war. Iran entered the war with Iraq with about 20 F-14s, most of which had invalid combat capabilities, and for this reason, most of them were used as an AWACS. The Iraqi Air Force achieved 400,000 successful combat sorties during the Iran-Iraq war, while Iran did not achieve even 10,000, and this in itself tells who is superior.
This video ignores few facts: 1) Iranian pilots were saving their phoenix missiles and would only fire them as last resort due to sanctions and lack of spare parts. 2) pretty much all the NATO nations including Russia were supplying Iraq with weapons and Iran was on its own 3) Given all the odds stacked against Iran with lack of spare parts or inability to purchase any weapons, Iran did a fantastic job destroying Iraqi air bases and having air superiority. Let's not forget that this was a war between Iran and NATO and Russia. Iraqis had access to satellites, American support, and intelligence, including America's support in jamming Iranian radars. This by no means was just an Iran vs. Iraq war.
6:39 Did that double hit by the Super 530Fs actually happen? Or is it just for the recreation? I had no idea the F1s actually scored kills on Tomcats, amazing video!
Thanks for the comment. I'm not sure exactly how many missiles were launched. It seems however thst in both cases, both F1 pilots attacked the same F-14. I would launch both missiles if I ever took an aim at a Tomcat.
I would have done it already if the replay track for F-14 in DCS worked. I'll try again soon to see if the situation improved (or if I can find some way around the problem).
It would have still had the range problem. Biggest difference in my opinion would have been the adjustment of Port Stanley runway and movement of fast jets to the islands.

Yes they did. Not the F model that was ordered especially for them but the earlier E model. Supposedly, it wasn't fully compatible with AWG-9 and its accuracy was downgraded but that's what they had from the Phantom stocks and that's what they sometimes used.
Not exactly. According to USN official site, Iran bought Phoenix missiles at about 547.000 USD per missile. As for MiG-23 cost, some online sources say that Soviets were selling the MS variant at between 3.6 and 6.6 million at the time. MS was the export version with older avionics, advanced models probably cost more. As for Su-22, there's info about Peruvian purchase in late 1970s. 250 million for 32 airframes, including spare parts and weapons. But even if the missile is more expensive, any piece of military equipment operated by the enemy can in theory cause a much greater damage so it's still worth using an expensive weapon to destroy it.

The stupidity of some of the statements made about the Iraqi mirages is beyond belief. Mirage F1 was no match for an Iranian F14 if the F14 was in good shape and not fighting the Mirages alone. In any one case the flight of F14s were no more than 2 ,and in thegreat majority of cases a single F14 would had to tackle up to 6 Mirages or Migs. They would send a flight of six or more Mirage F1s out at low altitude and they would appraoch their target where F14 was on cap, and fire all their radar/heat seeking missiles all at once and hope that one would hit. Iraq had no problem getting masses of missiles or fighters from the Soviets or from France, unlike Iran who was under heavy sanctions by the US and the West. Although Iran had purchased 80 F14 from the US , only 79 were delieverd, the max number of Iranian F14s who were battle ready was less then 24. At the onset of the war, neither the AIM9 Sidewinder nor the AIM7 Sparrow were interfaced properly with the F14s, so they had to rely on their AIM54 misslies that were for long range interception, and not for dog fighting, an dtheir numbers were quite low in the Iranian inventory. Iran is a vast country, nearly 1/2 the size of Europe, and these aircraft had to be deployed sparingly and thinly. Iraq lost in excess of 200 aircraft to the Iranians in its 8 year war with Iran, 42 of them in one instance in the attack on the H3 base near the Jordanian border. In later years Iraq also enjoyed the protection of the US navy in the Persian Gulf. The US Ships would provide a radar umbrella for the Iraqis, but the US would report the position and the movement of the Iranian F4s and F14s to the Iraqis through their stooges the Saudis who would immediately relay the information to the Iraqis. This was to maintain the impression of neutrality on the part of the US. All these were told me by my school friend who was the pilot of an F14, and yes he was also a graduate of the Top Gun school , and an Instructor. As for the obsudity of the Iraqi claims ablout tehir losses, suffice to point out that one Iranian ace Major Zandi, had 11 confirmed kills, 5 of which were Mirage F1. There were many Zandis in the Iranian airforce flying both the F4s. and F14s.

Incredible stories that I had not known at all, it's the prove with a good strategy we could win a battle against a superior technology, but the iranians had the right reaction for answering. During the second gulf war in 1991, a lot MIRAGE F1 had shot down by allied aircraft, in particulary by the f-15 C Eagle. Today, a part of these MIRAGE F1 have joined the IRIAF, it's because somme pilots from IRAKI air force have escaped from the Saddam Hussein political regime during this war, and we have not forgotten that 70% of the iraki people are chiite.

@@showtime112 They didn't defect to Iran. Saddam's regime ordered the pilots to fly those planes (and a few large Boeing passenger planes) to Iran to keep them from being lost in the war after some negotiations with the regime in Tehran.
This was sensational pacing and editing. Thank you!

Who would have thought that the F14 would have such a weakness to giraffes.
Every system has some weakness, you just need to find it.

The day of glory for the IrAF and F-1 was July 19 1988, the last day of the war, two F-14 and one F-4 were shot down by Mirage F-1 with the new Super 530D missiles, a pre-production batch was send by France.
On the other side in February 9 1988 the F-14 of Lt Qiyassi shot down 3 Mirage F-1 in one day over the Gulf.
All this come from Tom Cooper´s books.
This is actually a misconception... Super 530D was not exported to Iraq only 530F. Super 530D could be used only with RDI radar or RDM radar upgrades.

you should consider doing a video on the massive Battle of El mansoura over egypt during the October 1973 war....Egyptian MiG pilots appear to have toughened up remarkably and losses on both sides appear equal if both sides are honest....one Egyptian pilot, Mohhammed adoub blew a A-4 apart with 30 mm cannon at close range and flew through the debris field and went down himself.......The egyptian air force celebrates this defensive victory to this day
I will cover that story.

Ridiculous
In 1970's & 80's some iraqi pilots were trained by indian air force
Yes, I've read about that.
WTF?I myself am Iranian, and I must say that Iran does not have more than 79 F14s, then the code of this fighter is 80?.. Just how many of these 79 fighters have been shot down and how many have also crashed.
I love the phantoms, but I personally always thought it was better as a heavy fighter bomber/EW aircraft than the navy interceptor/light strike fighter it was originally designed for.
In1992 in Greece we have lost a F-1 pilot in dogfight with Turkish F-16. He crushed in Aegean sea.

So nice to hear. Thanks.
That's what everybody believed in the 1980s. Plenty of new info emerged since then.
This video ignores few facts:
1) Iranian pilots were saving their phoenix missiles and would only fire them as last resort due to sanctions and lack of spare parts.
2) pretty much all the NATO nations including Russia were supplying Iraq with weapons and Iran was on its own
3) Given all the odds stacked against Iran with lack of spare parts or inability to purchase any weapons, Iran did a fantastic job destroying Iraqi air bases and having air superiority. Let's not forget that this was a war between Iran and NATO and Russia. Iraqis had access to satellites, American support, and intelligence, including America's support in jamming Iranian radars. This by no means was just an Iran vs. Iraq war.
The video focuses on the specific operations and it doesn't necessarily give the 'big picture' as many people probably know it.

The MiG 23 was the wildebeest of fighter aircraft, just a source of protein for predators.
Generally yes, but sometimes it could fight back. It shot down at leaat two F-14 and a couple of Phantoms during this war.
An F-14 shot down a MiG-23 with a Phoenix missile? The missile probably cost more than the MiG-23 and about 2x the cost of the SU-22.

@@showtime112 There is a Documentary on Hulu called "Above and Beyond" about the creation of the IAF in the 1948 war.
There were many Zandis in the Iranian airforce flying both the F4s. and F14s.

Iraq also drafted mercenary pilots from other countries due to their own shortage of skilled pilots.
@@rashnuofthegoldenscales4512 Correct. They had borrowed Mirage 2000s from the Egyptians. They had leased the French Super Etendards, etc etc. Who was piloting them?
But the Iraqis didn't shoot down any US F14's during Desert Storm. It's almost like pilot capability came into play. Hmm...
One F-14 shot down during Desert Storm might have been shot down by an Iraqi fighter. The story is a bit unclear. However, American pilots fought with a lot more assets on their side such as AWACS, jamming platforms etc. Giraffe would have much lower chances of success in such an environment.
Ok.
Minus US Navy crews. Different result
That might not have been the only factor.
I remember being very surprised at hearing the news about Iraqi jets escaping to Iran. But they kept the jets after all so maybe they were deceitful in the first place.

Saddam's regime ordered the pilots to fly those planes (and a few large Boeing passenger planes) to Iran to keep them from being lost in the war after some negotiations with the regime in Tehran. The iranians were to store the planes and then return them once the war was over. Iraq would pay the iranians for storage and upkeep. Iran though..as usual..kept them and integrated them into it's own services. Then..only recently.. they decided to return the planes (now junk metal) to the pro-iranian iraqi government.
@@69columbus I said they escaped, not defected.
@@showtime112 OK... I know. When i hear of an air force pilot escaping with their jet to a supposed enemy country, I take that as a defection. Obviously , you see it as something different. However, interesting how you focused on that one word when I was basically providing a bit more context and detail in support of your comment and for the benefit of the viewers. Regardless, you should learn to be a bit more gracious towards your viewers and those who take the time to contribute to your channel. Cheers
@@69columbus Sorry, I thought you were correcting me. You would be surprised how many people write angry comments 'correcting' me but in fact they just misheard of misunderstood something. It's really annoying 😁
