French Mirage F1 in Chad - France vs Libya (1983-86)

- During the 1980s, two foreign powers France and Libya intervened militarily in the African country of Chad. During operations Manta and Epervier, the French Air Force (Armée de l'air) operated aircraft types such as Jaguar and MIrage F1. The Mirages were mainly responsible for maintaining air superiority and intercepting Libyan aircraft which approached or crossed the so-called Red Line between the government and insurgent forces. Several interesting close encounters with Libyan aircraft occurred and we will examine them in detail in this video.

There are videos from the 2000s showing the Mirage F1 pilots doing low level flights over Chad, and they seemed to have a lot of fun. Apparently, since their aircraft were going to be decommissioned afterwards, they were allowed to push them harder than they otherwise would have been.
As long as it made it back to the base 😁
Yeah I watched those

The video has a Tu-22M Backfire while in reality the Libyan Air Force used the Tu-22 Blinder, a totally different aircraft, very different looks differently designed. I don’t know about DCS but I have the Blinder on both FSX and P3D. The quality and historical accuracy of the video are high quality nonetheless. Bravo.
There's just the Tu-22M, older one is not available. Thanks for commenting!
The Blinder was so poorly designed and had so poor of a track record that no one bothers to make a mod for it because they are all rotting in a junkyard somewhere.

Speaking of the Libyans, they also participated in the total sh1tshow that was the Uganda-Tanzania war in 1978-1979. One of the Libyan Tu-22s was sent to bomb Mwanza in Tanzania, but the crew were so incompetent that they only hit a national wildlife park.

EXCELLENT source of aviation and Cold War information about the Chad conflict during the 80s. You did a great job by pressenting the F-1, MiG-25 and the Tu-22 (Backfire bomber), this in particular being a sofisticated and advanced bomber in the hands of the Lybians.
Keep on working, you are doing GREAT. Thanks.
Thank you! The Tu-22 in reality was the older, less sophisticated version (which we don't have in DCS) but the Libyans flew a couple of successful strikes in that war with it.

Two diferente beasts, indeed
80s seems like a busy time in africa...
It's a shame there are no Blinders in DCS, that old 22 model is way more cold war looking than 22M/26...
It definitely was, all over the place. We do lack Cold War era models, true. I wish we had IL-28. There is a good description of an Ethiopian F-5 attack on a Somali airfield in which one of those was destroyed on the ground. It was described in detail by a Soviet advisor who was there and I would really like to do this scenario some day.
Interesting summary of French-Libyan military aviation activities in Chad, good work Showtime112! It's quite impressive that Libyan Tu-22 was capable of jamming. Interestingly, according to wikipedia the aircraft which was shot down by HAWK had East German crew.
Thanks! There are some accounts about the crew being East German but that's not confirmed. I think East Germany didn't operate Tu-22 which makes it a bit questionable.
@@showtime112 DDR never operated Tu-22 but Soviet forces were present in that country. I wouldn't be surprised if in case of limited crew availability, some East German pilots were selected and trained to fly soviet aircrafts.

In May 1977, somewhere over the Red Sea between Djibouti and Yemen was an interesting incident. A pair of French Navy F-8 Crusaders were to meet a pair of Armée de l'Air F-100s from Djibouti: for a mock combat training. The Crusaders however stumbled instead on a pair of... Yemenite MiG-21s. Both sides were a bit startled, and a fight almost started: before everybody goot cool and pressed home.
That's interesting. I wasn't familiar with this incident, thank you for bringing it up.
@@showtime112 You are welcome !
"On 7 May 1977, two Crusaders on a training missions were expected to engage two F-100 Super Sabres from the Djibouti-based 4/11 Jura squadron. After the leader spotted the “enemy” and engaged into mock combat, he realized his opponents were not French F-100's as expected but MiG-21's from Yemen. His wingman joined the fighting and weapons were armed but the fight ended without a shot being fired. This was presumably the only wartime interception by French Crusaders."
Hello Showtime112, how are you ? The french pilot who was killed was Michel Croci, whose name is used on several buildings and for a french air base (Bordeaux). He was probably shot down by a SA-7 SAM, while his straffing against the column. They were two Mirage F1, not only one, and one of them was hit like said in the video and lost some fuel but managed to join the air base fortunetely. I don't know anything about the second shot down Jaguar. And by the way, it's not a TU-22M BACKFIRE, but a previous TU-22, with three bulgarian mercenaries pilots who were burned by civilians near the taxiway, where the plane was crashed.
Hello! Nice to hear from you again. Thank you for contributing facts. I might someday do a reenactment of the French Jaguar engagements in this conflict too. Yes, this is TU-22M but it sort of represents the older model because we don't have this one.
The French sure made some beautiful jets. The F.1 is sex on wings.
Who doesn't like French design? 😁
I personally prefer the delta wing Mirages, their silhouette is much more menacing, but I like most is the way the word "Mirage" is penned on the side of the nose, like on a sports car.
@@MegaEvoluzione I'm sure many agree with you. Good thing is that a proper Mirage III is also being developed for DCS and I'm gonna use that one a lot when I get my hands on it!
Chad is basically a French Colony ?
Great videos very refreshing to see and hear a more in depth analysis of air conflicts from around the globe. You do know that the Lybian's actually operated the older TU22 "Blinder" bombers not the "Backfire" in the video.
Thanks! I know this is the wrong kind of Tu-22 but sadly, the older one is not available so I approximated it with this one. It's not the loosest substitute I've ever done :)
I usualy don't like virtual films bur that one and the mirage looks great! Weren't the French mirage painted in a desert scheme? Or perhaps was it on the recon versions?
Thanks for the comment! As far as I could find on photos and color profiles, the interceptor C variant used by the French in Chad was blue. It seems that the CR variants used desert camouflage.
I know DCS does not have the Tu-22 Blinder so you used Tu-22M but even I get confused and forget the Blinder was typically exported to the middle east as it's the fixed winged bomber and the Backfire was specifically just a Russian bomber. I never understood why the Soviets kept the designation the same with many aircraft even though they were based of each other the changes are so vast it's practically a different aircraft. Love the vids
Thanks! Things can get quite confusing with the Russians. They sometimes use similar designations for rather different equipment and on other times, completely different designations for just different variations of the same equipment. That was probably to confuse the enemy 😁
@@showtime112 yeah like the Mig-27 which was just a Flogger designed for ground strike.. different designation for the same plane..lol
An excellent account of the events. There is one small detail, however: the bomber that attacked the N'Djamena air base was a TU-22 BLinder, not a Tu-22M Backfire. Before it was hit by the Hawk, it had time to drop a bomb. Fortunately, this caused little damage and no casualties. The crew of this bomber was East German.
Thank you for commenting! The Tu-22M here is a stand-in as the older version is not available in DCS.
Few years ago, while I was at university, my propulsion teacher who was a former fighter pilot told me about the Jaguar that had been shut down in Tchad. One bullet had pilled the honeycomb structure on the longitudinal side at one wing root. Consequence is the wing itself went away. Since aircaft was carrying-out a low pass to straff the column, the pilot couldn't eject
This was a patrol of two planes, one F1 and one Jaguar. They flew over a Libyan column retreating from Faya-Largeau. They informed the French HQ in Tchad. Another pass was requested to estimate the strength of the column. At first, the pilots refused as the column was alerted and a lot of flack including bunch of ZS 23-4 was waiting for them. Order was given to do the pass, Capitaine Michel Croci in the Jaguar did it, plane was hit, went inverted and exploded. As far as I know purpose of the pass was not straffing.
4 Jaguars and 2 pilots were lost during this campaign.
French Air base number 107 is now named "Capitaine Michel Croci", as a tribute.
Thanks for sharing this experience.
Formidable! As usual.

I read a book from a former secret service operator, and the jaguars did perform some straffing runs on lybian columns. I don't know if those informations were officialy disclosed. I don't remember the title of the book (it might be oxygen). From what it said, some columns were butchered in the desert.
I witnessed once a jaguar straffing run with shells pounding the ground 100 yards from me, I can tell you that you shit your pants if you're on the receiving end of such a beast.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Jaguars were indeed uses in anger against Libyans on several occasions and it's possible that some of that (especially from the Operation Manta) was kept low profile.

In my opinion, the only reason these Mirages failed to distinguish themselves in the air-to-air role was because headquarters forbade them to engage. As for that, I have little praise for their headquarters.

What kind of idiot attacks a country named Chad?! I mean the name of the country is literally CHAD!
All is true, and exists more adventures but it's too long for discribing all, it willt take hours ans hours with the Jaguar opérations. Personaly I have seen the landing gear strut of the TU-22 that was shot down in Tchad at the base Chaumont Semoutiers in Haute Marne in 1993 where was the military camp which looked after the missile HAWK. The mirage F1 arrived in Africa on january 1980 it's because they were equiped with in flight refueling pole and their appelation changed in F1 C-200, C for combat. After 1992, there were the Mirage F1 CT ( Combat tactique), in fact, it's 55 F1 C-200 that the french army transformed it just after the golfe war of 1991, they added the laser guided bombs GBU-12, a inertial unit, a laser telemetric under the noise, there were operational until 2011 in Africa. And for finishing the MIRAGE F1 CR (Combat reconnaissance) started his african experiences on the mid 80's until 2013,they have equiped with reconnaissance pods and a camera under the noise of the plane in the same time they could do bombing raids, it was equiped with only one cannon of 30 mm, the other one was replaced by a camera. On july 2014, the MIRAGE F1 was retired of the french army. Today these planes are flying in USA, in ATAC group, a private company which make training for fighters pilots. These company had bought these MIRAGE F1 for 300 millions dollars from the french governement. The old spanish F1 M fly with DRAKEN company in USA at this moment with the MIRAGE F1-B ( two seats version for the traning and formation of the pilots) from the french army. Since 2013, the Mirage 2000 D is flying alone in Tchad and Niger instead of the MIRAGE F1. On 1986, Kadhafi received american bombs from F-111 on the noise and he lost two MIG 23 against the F-14 Tomcat in the Syrte golfe, so he stopped the military operations in Tchad. Unfortunatly the consequences of the french operation in 2011 in libya was a disaster for all the region and it 's the reason why the french governement had intervened in Mali on january 2013. Today the governement of Mali have fired the french governement.

Nothing has stopped nowdays, in 2008, the MIRAGE F1 save the political regime, they had realised straffing opérations against the rebels because they have entered in N'Djamena the capitale. The opeation Ouadi Doum, a jaguar equiped with a AS-37 martel an anti radiation missile, has destroyed a lybian radar station, in the meantime two MIRAGE F1 played the role of the goat for distraying the radar. When they returned to the base they have been purchased by MIG 21 that couldn't catch them. But, I didn't know some stories like the MIG 25 and the straffing opérations. I ignore that. I think there's a lake of the MIG 17, and the F-8 Crusader. It will be wonderful if all these planes could exist on DCS, I think it will be one day, don't worry. You could do a lot of stories of dogfight for many years for the greatest joy of everybody. For the Jaguar it's only bombing missions, but there's a lot, Africa, Golfe missions, in the french part and english part too. Keep going, don't give up, you will become better and better.
