Things That Should Not Have Been Donated to Thrift Shops

  • These things should not have been donated to thrift shops. In 2017, a woman accidentally donated a shirt to Goodwill, not realizing it had $8,000 in it. In 2021, volunteers at an Arizona thrift store found a Purple Heart in a donation box. In April, staff at New Tazewell Goodwill in Tennessee hoped to recover a sentimental toy accidentally donated to the store. Inside Edition Digital’s Andrea Swindall has more.

I once lost a storage unit containing the hand quilted baby blanket made for my birth by my long-gone paternal grandmother, who was so beloved by her eight children. She raised them from the 19-teens through WW2, and until she passed in the early 70’s when I was an infant. I would’ve given an organ to get it back. Bless these people who put time and energy into returning priceless mementos to the people to whom they matter. It’s a mitzvah, a good deed, and has an almost sacred weight.❤

Thrift shop worker here. We've had multiple large amounts of money show up, urns with ashes abandoned (the daughter was very mad at her father for that one), as well as a huge box of adult items, all opened. Please think about what you donate and that if you would not purchase it for any reason, no one else wants to. Stop donating your nasty underwear/socks/soiled baby clothes/rusted items/etc. We don't wash them, they go out as you donate them or get thrown away.

My kid made an art exhibition with real people's pictures in their frames that she's found over the years in our thrift stores here in México. They range from vintage 60s to early 2000s and go from small children to someone's grandma. It's a complete mystery for us how something as personal like your kid's pictures or a heirloom like your grandma's old picture end up being thrown away or donated. Some pictures have names and dates, but most don't. She called her exhibition '$30-50 mxn' because thats the price range for those picture frames, 30 to 50 mexican pesos, I call it "Los olvidados" or "The forgotten".
And it's not just picture frames, we've seen books with gift dedications, full picture albums, custom mugs with old pictures printed on them, etc.
The one that hurts my daughter the most is a drawing made in the 70s by someone's then 7 year old that was valuable enough to be custom framed but not valuable enough to be kept as a family heirloom of sorts. The one I value a lot is a custom drawing of someone's siamese cat by the artist GILPIN. Its a gorgeous piece of art.

My mother in law and my wife were in a thrift store some years ago and MIL passed on a gold bracelet that she thought was too ugly, but my wife wanted a closer look at it. Some instinct told her to buy it, and since it was in the junk jewelry basket, she only had to pay $3.
Following that instinct, my wife took the bracelet to a reputable jeweler in town and they confirmed that it was a solid 24k gold bracelet and that just the recycle value was in the ballpark of $350, if it was made by a big name designer and could be confirmed, then it could easily have been worth 10x that.
As soon as MIL heard about that, it suddenly became "a beautiful piece" that would "complement [her] other jewelry perfectly." My wife wasn't having it, but ended up having to sell it to her mom anyway to cover some money she borrowed later.

I need folks to know that families DO in fact donate or trash some of the most precious things. 2 years ago I called non emergency for a wellness check on my elderly neighbor and her dog. She was gone but I called in time to save her dog. Her kids live like 16 hours away and I never never saw them in the years of us living beside each other. Hell she barely talked about them. But they damn sure made it down in record time to go through her stuff and take only what they could put in their vehicles. When I say that poor woman’s 3 br house sat on the side of the road like trash that’s what I mean. I watched for almost a week as people dug through it. I was so happy when it was all finally taken… every time I look at her house I think of her and wonder what kind of person was she for her babies to do that. They didn’t even come over to talk. I went over there… no thank you… no words about a service… nothing… simply I could have anything I wanted 😢

I was browsing at a local thrift place when I was 15 or so and someone not only donated a full body set of bondage gear, but an employee actually put it out for sale. I didn't know EXACTLY what it was at the time, but I had more than a good idea and was like "wtf" even then lol

Who would find $8000 in a shirt at a thrift store and not keep it? I mean, I consider myself a pretty honest person, but I believe in "finders, keepers."

Always be careful what you donate because you may not see it again thrift stores and secondhand stores get a lot of product They have to move quickly and Sort through all the products So please be careful of what And double check before you do

I get so frustrated and upset when military medals and uniforms show up in donations. Some stores put those out and they get used by people lying about service. It’s so shameful. Anytime I see them, I scoop them up and try to return medals / award ribbons if I can.
