- Working on a motorcycle frame can be a rewarding and challenging experience. The first is to strip the frame down to its bare bones, which you can see in my 15min Teardown video. This allowed me to assess the overall condition and decide what needed to be repaired or replaced.
Even though this frame was really healthy, I welded up two small cracks that occurred on the frame support brackets that lead to the rear footrests. Instead of sandblasting this frame I went on to remove all residue, paint and rust with a laser cleanign machine. After that the frame was ready for a brand new paintjob in order to restore the frame to its original condition.
Attention to detail is crucial when restoring a motorcycle frame to ensure the bike is safe to ride, especially when you know 50 years old!
Now for the frame assembly of the BMW R60/5 Airhead, I got as many parts ready as I possibly could. There are at least 50 parts on both tables and the two major components that are going back onto this motorcycle are the front forks and the swing arm assembly.
Mounting a fork onto a motorcycle frame requires proper alignment. The fork legs should be straight and parallel before mounting. The fork needs to be secured to the triple clamp on the frame using locking nuts, ensuring a tight fit. In this video I share the assembly process in short with the correct measurements and torque specs according to the BMW service manual.
The swing arm on the otherhand is a critical component that ensures the alignment and stability of the rear wheel of the motorcycle. The process involves carefully fitting the existing swing arm with new parts, like bearings, seals, and thrust sleeves, to then aligning the rebuilt swing arm to the frame using specialized tools. Not to forget, the driveshaft also has to be installed prior to the assembly.
As you can tell, there are a few steps you want to get right before the swing arm goes back onto the main frame. With help of this video, I hope you can rebuild your own swing arm and install it back onto your motorcycle without any issues.
If this video was helpful in any way, I'd appreciate it if you hit that like button and if you want to be one of the first to see the assembly video, be sure to subscribe!

Another great video. I can't believe I didn't notice your boots were wrong. I watched your "FRONT SUSPENSION REBUILD" video many times. I should have noticed and let you know. I rebuilt (with your help) a front suspension on a friend's R75/5 and had to change out the 11 rib boots. The 13 rib boots look much better.
haha no worries! I'm glad I realized this before the whole front end assembly went back together. That is AWESOME!! It's very nice of you to help out your friend rebuild his front suspension. Enjoy your weekend
really enjoying this series
I‘m glad you are Jeff! Thanks for tuning in😃🙌🏽
Cool, I began mine soon, the paint job is in progress !
Thank you! Will you be sharing this in an upcoming video?😃👍🏽
@@WorkshopRebuild yes I made some videos on the #restauration on my French Chanel piston et boulon (piston and bolt)
Andreas, bruv you make the most clear and concise videos! From the content itself, the editing, the music... its just plain great! If you do it solo you're a legend. If you have help make sure to pass along the credit! Love the channel!!!
I appreciate your kind words and feedback!! All videos have been filmed and edited by me so far😃Maybe I‘ll have an opportunity to work with someone in the future (that would be epic)!
Thanks for your support❤️🙌🏽
Thsi bike will look stunning once completed! This video series is such a treat to watch as a BMW airhead owner
Thank you very much, Roger! I'm glad you found the channel and I hope this video series with help with your own repair. Regards Andreas
wow, wow, WOW! You outdid yourself on this motorcycle frame👍 I'm eagerly waiting to see how the engine will turn out. Keep up the amazing work!!!
Thank you so much Matthew! The engine rebuild is coming very soon and it‘ll be a blast to work on it, along with creating an assembly video😃🤙🏽 I will keep wrenching, don‘t you worry😎
Great work. I need to get going on my 75 R60/6. :)
Hi Mark, thank you for tuning in and leaving this comment! You have a great project in front of you and I'm sure with a little bit of effort you'll have your /6 back on the road sometime soon. Just try and work on it every now and then and your progress will add up. Enjoy the build process! Regards Andreas
@@WorkshopRebuild Thanks Andreas, looking forward to back road touring. At my age it's go slow....and watching the scenery. :) Mark
@@markmcminn5100 If you want to be the fastest on the road, then your don't need a classic BMW. It's about getting from A to B safely! Enjoy your wrenching days and enjoy your views while on the road. Cheers
Nice one man, really like it. Very helpful.
Thank you for tuning in and leaving a comment! I‘m glad you found this video helpful😃 Regards Andreas
I was just checking your channel this arvo today!! Really looking forward to the rebuild and hoping you can get the bike ready for this year's riding season.🤗
You are on time😎👍🏽👍🏽 Thanks for your constant support Simon! I‘m trying to push and make that happen, but I also want to make sure all components are assembled correctly. At the end of the day, this is still a 50yo motorcycle😁 Thanks for being one of the first to watch another video of mine! Regards Andreas
You can't hurry love.
Great video Andreas. So many helpful explanations in this one that I’ll be using when I get to my frame restoration in the future. Thanks!
I‘m glad to hear that you‘ll be restoring your own BMW frame and that this video help you down the road😃 Thanks for your positive comment, Broderick!
I'm impressed with how the bike looks. Each part looks like it's been refinished to perfection! I'm heading into Canada in a few days touring New Brunswick on my BMW - really looking forward to it. Looking forward to the engine rebuild.
Thanks for watching another video and leaving a great comment, John! All parts that have gone back onto this bike have been refinished and I tried my best to make them look like new again.
You have a very fun trip planned and I wish you a fantastic time on the road. New Brunswick has incredibly scenic landscape and it‘s something to behold. I have never been myself, but I have only heard good things!
The engine rebuild video is coming very soon and I cannot wait to share it with you.
Regards Andreas
Looks cool
Thanks a lot, David! There are still many more videos to come, until the motorcycle is complete. I hope you enjoy this series😃👍🏽 Regards Andreas
Are you a surgeon in real life? LoL. Looking at your shop and the organization and sequencing of tasks, layout of tools, - with white walls and spotless floor and worktables, I just see a nurse walking in any second to slap a 17mm spanner into your right hand and wipe the sweat off your forehead with you staring through your loupe.
I had a '85 RS 80. Never forget that thing. Thousands of miles and one clutch. Then a very close shave for me and the scrapheap for the old RS. Took one surviving black suitcase panier with me for countless years. Don't know why, probably as a reminder of my mortality.
Enjoyed this video while watching you fix an even older version.
This comment is just great, haha! I haven't given that a try yet, but if my work area is clean enough maybe I can start accepting patients😂
The Airheads from the 80's had some nice reliability improvements and service improvements, which made they literally bulletproof. The dry-clutch was know to be very strong and it had a great lifespan. I can imagine you went on great trips back in the day and those memories have stayed with you, because you held onto you pannier! It would be amazing to find out what happened with your bike after all these years...is it still on the road or does someone have it in the back of their garage?
Thank you for tuning in and sharing your story. I hope to have this bike back on the road sooner than later, but I want to get everything right to make it roadworthy. At the end of the day, it's still a 50yo machine!
In my upcoming videos I will assembling the final drive, the engine and then on the cosmetics. I hope you enjoy the rest of this video series.
Regards Andreas
hi Andreas,,great tutorials, did you not do a frame assembly part 2?,,i am curious as to what route you used for the front indicator wiring and indeed all the wiring in general
Dear Sirs. Can anyone send me a pic of the subframe top rails, front to back. From the side view.
I believe mine are bent downwards. Should they be straight?.
Thank you from Hobart Australia
Hi there! If you send me an email (workshoprebuild@gmail.com), I can send you a picture or two. Regards Andreas
Maybe a little late but you missed out routing the front blinker cables through the lamp holders and the blinker post on top of the lower fork tree. This cannot be done when the forks are fully assembled. Don’t ask me how I know… but otherwise great work
hi Ulrich,,im in the middle of restoring my /5,,I was also curious about this, or is there a better way to route the blinker cables that people use?
@@trevorpeel3003 Hi Trevor, if you want them to be invisible route them from the lampshell into the holes on the inside of the lamp posts and through the blinker stems.
😄 "Promo sm"
Thank you 😃🤙🏽
