I believe the mas malo is supposedly based on a modified fuzzface circuit. At least that's what fulltone compares it to in the instruction manual that came with my mas malo.

The Mas Malo sounds almost just like The Rat to me, but with a bit different eq bump in the mids. Love it!🤘
