Back in the day, when he said "down! down!" and you were on the dance floor, you would get on the floor, then come up when the music started back up. Great, silly times!
I've read that John and Yoko saw them perform at CBGB in NYC sometime in 1979, and were so impressed that it motivated John to return to the studio and start recording again -- sadly short-lived.
John thought Kate's yodeling was directly influenced by Yoko. It was most likely a coincidence, but when the band learned that John dug the song solely for that reason, they said "oh, uh, yeah we're totally into Yoko's music haha" just to be considerate. Ironically, it was inspiration enough for John to continue songwriting again after about a 5 year hiatus.
This is still such an amazing song, considering it's almost 45 years since its release in 1978. Odd/good things were certainly happening musically with My Sharona dropping in 1979 and the Talking Heads, Blondie, and the Ramones all making a buzz.
Not to mention Van Halen and The Police debuting in 78 I think. Fleetwood Mac released Rumors the year prior which launched them exponentially the year prior. Gary Numan released his first album (which was important for the oncoming of New Wave). The Wall came out in 79. Plus you have guys like Weather Report pushing things even further than they already were going in the jazz world (and that's saying something given that these guys were experimenting with songs with no key around this time because they were so good they had pretty much mastered everything else). There was a lot going on and it was a fantastic time musically.

Or maybe it's just me, because I can't not move around like an idiot when I hear this song. 😂

The love shack was a real place between Athens and Bogart, Georgia. College kids would party at the love shack among other things. They are a group of nice people, met them a couple of times. Love their minimalist dance music.
This came out in June of '79 but was a dance staple well into the 80s. I used to DJ a lot of parties and this was one the most requested songs. Whenever I played the floor was packed!
Rock Lobster became a hit in Australia before anywhere else, thanks to one radio station Triple J. They played it for months and it eventually caught on with other stations.
I’ve always loved them. Saw them (my first time) in the gym at University of Delaware with my friend who’d been attending in like 80 or 81. “Private Idaho” is my favorite of theirs. “Strobe Light” is a fun one, too. “Song For a Future Generation”, “Planet Claire”, “Give Me Back My Man”, “Whammy Kiss”, “Quiche Lorraine”, “Roam”, “52 Girls”. There’s so much more. Great band. 💜💜💜
The B-52's Rock lobster was my second favorite song, 1979. My first song was Plante Clair 1978 greatest music. In all times, the sound of music changed the world. I was only 16 years old. From pomona California, my friends thought I was crazy to listen to this. Because I was a gang member. But this song changed my life & the way i was 😊😊
Oh does this song bring back memories... The time 1978... Location: NYC, Max's Kansas City which along with CBGBs was the epicenter of the American Punk and New wave movements. I was a 16 year old HS student who had some friends who were already in college. One of those college buddies was friends with someone who rented the entire floor above Max's (it was a vacant, roach infested, dance studio...) and threw "bring your own" parties until the building found a real tenant. We partied to the music coming thru the floor but we also would sneak downstairs and catch some of he shows if it wasn't to crowded (which we would do once we were completely blotto'd on cheap alcohol at the party).. One time we went downstairs and it was the B-52's playing... it was one of the first times they played in NYC. Thew show was beyond outrageous. I remember heckling the hell out of the guitarist, Ricky Wilson, for only having 4 strings on his guitar but that didn't last too long once their show took off. What a night....If I only knew back then how lucky I was to see some of the stuff I saw at some of these places...
This song was literally the inspiration for Spongebob Squarepants, and the B52's have contributed to the show :) LOVE THIS BAND. The most fun band on earth
When they yelled Down Down!!! That was our cue, everyone was dropping slowly and squirming and then back up! Most fun concert at a university concert, everyone came down off the bleachers for this song and danced. Too bad we did not have cell phones to capture it!
You're the best Jamel. Love this song. I saw them in concert in San Diego and when the beat drops down we were all laying on the floor of the arena. Thank you.
In the 90s at my cousins wedding they played this and everyone that was young got on the floor during the breakdown and convulsed. Everyone over 30 had no idea what was happening, but the rest of us had a great time. Amazing feel. Fantastic reaction as usual.
I took this album to a party in my town just after it was released. No one had ever heard of them, including myself. By the end of the night we into it in a big way. When we saw the video the party's got pretty insane. We had the dance moves down bro...lol....love it.
The B-52s are fun. I can't help smiling whenever I hear them. "Roam" is one of my favorites of theirs. And "Your Own Private Idaho" is pretty iconic for them, as well. Cheers.
So this particular clip is being played on rage, which is an Australian TV music program that runs overnight from like Fridays and Saturdays at 11pm or so and runs between 7 and 12 hours long. They are sort of famous because they play pretty eclectic mixes and have guests on who will pick songs, sort of like a radio station with videos. But the most funn aspect is their opening theme which anyone that grew up especially in the 90s has permanently imbeded in their brains: ruclips.net/video/Lzk0sygecu4/видео.html
You know Jamel, their original guitarist, RIcky WIlson, brother of Cindy, one of the "trillers" is playing a four string guitar with a special tuning. That's how he gets that sound in the last part of the song that sounds like a distorted duck. I really love his guitar playing. He was really an underrated guitar player. I'm one of the few who do take their music seriously :)
Jamel… The lead singer moves around like the lead singer of one of our greatest bands …. Midnight Oil. The guy’s name was Peter Garrett, who later went on to work in politics here at a Federal level. Any Aussies reading this will know who I’m talking about 🇦🇺🤙😁👍🇦🇺
@@jamesbittle9789 … I have absolutely no doubt. I’ve been a fan of the Oils for 30 years (at least) & love them & have lost count of how many times I’ve seen them live over the years. Thanks for the tip on the album. I’ll check it out 🇦🇺👍😁🇦🇺
I saw the B-52s about five years ago from the fifth row center. Absolute joy. Back in the clubs when this came out, we used to go down to the floor like Fred Schneider (the lead singer), and bounce up and just dance for joy. Wonderful memories. Thank your for your reaction videos. Your wonderful spirit and appreciation for all music makes my day!
Your comment about not taking the song too seriously is good advice for the B-52s in general. The word "campy" comes to mind. They are here to make the world a little more fun, a little wacky, and make everybody dance. You should check out "Song For A Future Generation" by them, as well.
"Planet Clare", "Private Idaho", "Strobe Light", and "Quiche Lorraine" are more B-52 songs you might want to check out. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Listen to some DEVO, especially "Swelling Itching Brain", "Jocko Homo", and their cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction".
I think this is the best B-52s song. It’s just so well written, amazing music, the timing is insane - I mean come on…who doesn’t turn it up to 11 when this song comes on?!?
Love that you picked "Rock Lobster", Jamel! It's the first song I ever heard from the B-52's. I saw them on Saturday Night Live, with the original "Not Ready For Prime Time Players". I thought it was a skit, as they did a lot of musical stuff. I couldn't place the guys, but I remember thinking that Cindy was Lorraine Newman, and Kate was Jane Curtain. I'm glad I was wrong. I'd like to suggest for your list, "Quiche Lorraine", that's a fun song of theirs.
I spent about 3 months hanging around the Bs back on their Interdimensional Tourgasm tour and had a ball! They are the original party band and definitely believe in a good time! #Peace!
I have always loved the B-52's my introduction to them was another song from about the same time called "Planet Claire" which while being different still has the same fun vibes to it. Although in Rock Lobster you only get to hear the girls make animal sounds they are really wonderful in many other songs when they sing in harmony. You may want to go back to the same album "Love Shack" was on and listen to "Roam" or "Deadbeat Club". You will never get bored listening to any of their songs.
I saw them live 40 years ago tomorrow on March 3, 1982 in Lubbock TX. That night was a party. You could not stop dancing in the isles. Fun times and still remember that night vividly. Thanks for reminding me.
One of my favorite albums ever.. This was way before Love Shack. Basically a 60s beach blanket movie on acid. Pure party time and no, no point in trying to analyze the lyrics. Try Planet Claire, Dance This Mess Around, 52 Girls, anything from this album or their other early albums.
There’s another one that’s just as funny as this one and both of them have their own quirks. It’s another live version and even if you’ve seen all of them 10 times it’s still fun every time. The other ones a little bit longer I think but anybody that likes this will like the other version too.
OMG I danced to this so much on the late 70s, early 80s in Washington DC! Down! Down! And everyone would literally lay down on the dance floor hahahaha aaah good times!! Rock Lobster Aaaaah aaaah aaah aaah 😄😄😄🦂🦂🦂
Definitely a party band and a party song. Whenever this would start playing, EVERYBODY was on the floor dancing. Even had its own dance where you would make lobster claws. Next, you should do “Planet Claire”, “Private Idaho”, “Mesopotamia”, “Devil in My Car”, and/or “Give Me Back My Man”.
This song was so much crazy fun !!! So many great hits from that era! I’d like to recommend both versions of “Der Kommissar“, “Rock Me Amadeus“ by Falco, “Bird Song” by Lene Lovich (also “Say When” and “Lucky Number”, also by Lene Lovich).
Such a blast, like nothing I'd seen or heard before in my sheltered conservative home town. Later on I knew the pop culture styles genres and references that they were "pastiche"ing for the new punk scene. First time I heard Adam Ant too at that party. Got to go non-alcoholic wild. 😄
OMG---so much fun! Early in their career, for sure. When this came out, at my high school, you either loved them or hated them....of course I loved them!
The B-52s are definitely one of the greatest party bands. I love their first 2 albums, and a smattering of songs off of their albums from the late 1980s/early 1990s. You definitely need to give Planet Claire, Strobe Light, and Roam a listen. While they were fun, they weren't without tragedy. Ricky Wilson, the guitarist and older brother of fellow band member, singer and incidental percussionist Cindy Wilson, died of AIDS in 1985. Cindy was quite devastated, and only played sporadically with The B-52s for the next several years. Cindy is often brunette, or wearing brunette wigs in the late 70s/early 80s, and typically platinum blonde in the late 80s/early 90s; as compared to Kate Pierson's red to auburn hair & wigs. I read John Lennon was a fan of the B-52’s and likened their vocal trills to Yoko’s singing. I say, “No Way!” These ladies trilled on pitch! 🤣🤣🤣
@@lronhubcap8521 nope, you can only vomit to her
Kate and/or Cindy is a fan of Yoko's music. I remember an interview where one of them said that.
The love shack was a real place between Athens and Bogart, Georgia. College kids would party at the love shack among other things. They are a group of nice people, met them a couple of times. Love their minimalist dance music.
Oh lord, how I was hoping one day you would get to this one. Loved your reaction buddy!
Private Idaho is my favorite from them
This came out in June of '79 but was a dance staple well into the 80s. I used to DJ a lot of parties and this was one the most requested songs. Whenever I played the floor was packed!
Well into the 90s in fact, in the clubs, and beyond 😉
@@YogZab That's good to know. I was done DJing by '88 so glad to hear it was still going strong.
Saw them open for Talking Heads at the Coconut Grove at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Can't remember the year, but I sure as hell remember the show!
High school memories!! Thank you for reacting to the this song!!
Rock Lobster became a hit in Australia before anywhere else, thanks to one radio station Triple J. They played it for months and it eventually caught on with other stations.
Loved listening to Triple J in the late '80's and early '90's..
class of '89...great music back then
I’ve always loved them. Great band. 💜💜💜
🦞❤️A Fun Song Back in the Day . Your Reaction is Priceless!!
This is a college party type of song, greatest one for that venue.
A few years ago, my wife and I attended a B-52's/Culture Club concert. Both bands sounded great and we had a blast.
What a night....If I only knew back then how lucky I was to see some of the stuff I saw at some of these places...
ohhh yeah! This a funky one! Love the B-52s
This song was literally the inspiration for Spongebob Squarepants, and the B52's have contributed to the show :) LOVE THIS BAND. The most fun band on earth
I didn't know that but I said just the other day this song makes me think of a sponge Bob square pants punk rock party.
Love the B52’s. This song drove my Mom crazy!!
“Turn that ‘Yippee yippee’ stuff down”
😂🤣
RIP Mom…good memories
When they yelled Down Down!!! That was our cue, everyone was dropping slowly and squirming and then back up!
Most fun concert at a university concert, everyone came down off the bleachers for this song and danced. Too bad we did not have cell phones to capture it!
We had so much fun dancing to this song at 80s school dances.
You're the best Jamel. Love this song. I saw them in concert in San Diego and when the beat drops down we were all laying on the floor of the arena.
Thank you.
Seen them back in the day in Irvine and San Diego. The B-52's were amazing live. We danced all night.
I won a dance contest to this when I was like 12. It was at a Bar Mitzvah party. Lol
Nice!
That's very sad, actually. 😖
@@honorsilverthorne7227 You must have forgotten to take your happy 💊 today!
I love the B-52s they’re so unique and full of energy.
In the 90s at my cousins wedding they played this and everyone that was young got on the floor during the breakdown and convulsed. Everyone over 30 had no idea what was happening, but the rest of us had a great time. Amazing feel. Fantastic reaction as usual.
B-52’s Planet Claire
This came out the year I graduated high school. I remember being on the beach with my friends and a boom box dancing to this. Great, fun memories!
Rock Lobster is absolutely a song that gets the party going and everybody is on the floor.
Whenever I hear this classic, I can't help doing the Swim!
Shadooobeeya....
shadoobeeya...
The B52s have some jams, Mesopotamia, Planet Claire, Private Idaho, Rome, all of those are amazing take your pick
One of the greatest New Wave dance songs! These guys did Love Shack and one of the girls, Kate Pierson, did Shiny Happy People with REM.
Thanks for the info. I love context. : )
One of the best party tracks ever!!! You simply CANNOT keep still when this song is playing.
They were the ultimate party band. I saw them in the 1990’s, and they were awesome. I danced all the way through, and my ears rang for days!
you get it...IT'S ALL FUN!!! DO MORE thank you
That whole last part of the song totally grooves
Love The B-52's, check out "52 Girls" it's a great tune
You know Jamel, their original guitarist, RIcky WIlson, brother of Cindy, one of the "trillers" is playing a four string guitar with a special tuning. That's how he gets that sound in the last part of the song that sounds like a distorted duck. I really love his guitar playing. He was really an underrated guitar player. I'm one of the few who do take their music seriously :)
Absolutely. His riff on Lava is genius!
The B52s were still making music as late as 2019...all in the 70s....love their music now as I did then. 👍👍🤗🤗
The obvious progression from here is DEVO! (not sure if you've gone there yet?)
ARE WE NOT MEN?
We are DEVO!
Beautiful World would be right up Jamel's alley.
Girl U Want
Uncontrollable Urge
Whip It
Satisfaction
Mongoloid
What We Do
Freedom of Choice
Workin in the Coal Mine
Fresh
Jamel… The lead singer moves around like the lead singer of one of our greatest bands …. Midnight Oil. The guy’s name was Peter Garrett, who later went on to work in politics here at a Federal level. Any Aussies reading this will know who I’m talking about 🇦🇺🤙😁👍🇦🇺
Midnight Oil has a new album too; it's excellent.
@@jamesbittle9789 … I have absolutely no doubt. I’ve been a fan of the Oils for 30 years (at least) & love them & have lost count of how many times I’ve seen them live over the years. Thanks for the tip on the album. I’ll check it out 🇦🇺👍😁🇦🇺
Have you ever seen someone having so much fun making music? THey are a force of nature.
Yes. I wore out Devo and the B-52's back in the day and still do.
This was the best club dance song!!! When the song broke it down and came to a stop, we all fell down to the floor. Awesome!
This is a crazy song. I've always loved their song "Bushfire".
Whenever this came on at a party, disco, club, even in the lounge room, the dance floor instantly became a sea of boppers. One of the best ever.
Check out "Give Me Back My Man". It's one of the few songs that Cindy Wilson sings alone.
Just watched the live version, yesterday, recorded at Capitol Theater . That shows their musical and singing chops.
I saw them live 40 years ago tomorrow on March 3, 1982 in Lubbock TX. That night was a party. You could not stop dancing in the isles. Fun times and still remember that night vividly. Thanks for reminding me.
Always a pleasure to see you Jamal having a good time and laughing your a** off!
52 Girls...I listen to it while driving a lot of times.
@@DM-hk4cw It's a great kick in the pants. I used to listen to this whole album as part of my weekend pre-party routine.
Oh man, he's making me laugh so much I've got tears in my eyes. I swear, the best reactions of them all is right here. Thanks, I needed that.
Oh man they were so young. This was from back when they were still playing smaller venues around UGA in Athens GA.
There’s another one that’s just as funny as this one and both of them have their own quirks. It’s another live version and even if you’ve seen all of them 10 times it’s still fun every time. The other ones a little bit longer I think but anybody that likes this will like the other version too.
You need to react to Bill McClintock's mashup called "Raining Lobsters." It's a MASTERPIECE!
THIS!!
Do you know John Lennon (of the famous Beatles )
was astounded by the B-52s
Because the girls were inspired by Yoko Ono’s vocals
I, too, am astounded anyone was inspired by Yoko's vocals.
One of the best groovin songs ever!
I got to meet the B-52s in 1982 backstage at Red Rocks! I was 14, and it was epic!!! 😁
Such a blast, like nothing I'd seen or heard before in my sheltered conservative home town. Later on I knew the pop culture styles genres and references that they were "pastiche"ing for the new punk scene.
First time I heard Adam Ant too at that party. Got to go non-alcoholic wild. 😄
A great band all their songs were a little “bizarre”, But a great listen still
Music is supposed to be bizarre its fantasy and entertainment , which is why music is utter crap today , garbage
This was the most popular dance song back when I was in college! It was fun for everyone to dance to! “Down, down, down…” had everyone on the floor!

The guitar player, Ricky Wilson ( RIP) only used four strings on this song. No bass guitar. Notice the drummer looks like Tom Brady. 😆😆
Ricky died way to young.... Underrated Guitar Player!!!!!! Just listen to him in this song... Its BADASS COOL😎😎
This song was always super fun at a wedding. Everyone hit the dance floor!
