These guys were all about kitsch, camp, and retro. They were poor college kids in Athens, GA when that was a happening music town. They shopped at Good Will for all the retro clothes. The guitarist, Ricky Wilson, and the dark haired woman, Cindy Wilson, were brother and sister. Cindy was the only straight person in the group, everyone else was gay, though not all were out at the time. Ricky died of complications from AIDS in 1985 - only 32 years old. The band was devastated and took a couple years off. They came back in 1989 with the album "Cosmic Thing" which was an autobiographical album, and contained the hit "Love Shack". They just looked a little different by that point since it was 11 years later. Thanks for listening and sharing!
    Peace from SF

If you think this sounds strange and funky 40 years later, imagine how it sounded back then. To people like us who had no idea WTF was coming. One of the signs of greatness is creating a sound that no one has ever heard before and no one has been able to duplicate since. B-52's, Oingo Boingo and Devo (all from that same time) are three bands who are great because they made something no one had ever heard before, and nobody has been able to or tried to replicate since. If you want to hear the greatest cover of all time, check out Devo's cover of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction."

I enjoyed your review and it was fun to see and hear someone's response for the first time hearing this. I grew up on this (I'll be 54 next month), but I remember how this song got everyone on the dance floor at our college parties. And it wouldn't be complete without some of us falling to the floor as the lead singer did in the video. Those were really fun (and innocent) times. I'd give anything to go back.

They did an initial six song set, but since they were the final act, they played for 90 straight minutes and had people up on stage with them. Their music can be described as New Wave, neo-psychedelic lounge music, and party pop. They are a great, great, house/party band.

Ricky Wilson the guitar player for a few of their songs actually removed strings from his guitar to get that sort of "Beach Surfing Vibe" to the songs. By doing this he could easily play the base line for the band (They had no base player) as well as produce that funky feel. When the band reunited after the death of Ricky Wilson they actually added a base player to the line up which they never had before to play some of their older hits. If you look at the video closely you can see he is missing strings on his guitar. They did this for Private Idaho as well as a few others.

This was definitely one of those "just party fun" songs of my teens in the 80s! I can imagine the Addams Family and the Muensters dancing in their ghoulish ways to this one! LMAO What would Uncle Fester do to this one? What about Lurch and Grand Mama?

This song was a guaranteed get up and party song (back in the day). Their new wave/eclectic/dance sound filled each and every one of their albums (combined with Fred's humorous and "off beat" delivery). They came out of Athens Georgia and captured a world-wide audience. Sure, they aren't for everyone... but music is like that.

"Rock Lobster", by The B-52s, was a major hit in the UK back in 1978, and influenced a lot of "New Wave" bands there at the time. The band has been around for a very long time. Kurt Loder once stated on MTV, that the female singers in the group, sing "Soul music, but from a different place".

The B52s are a really fun party band. They were like nothing before or since. They did the song Love Shack as well as Private Idaho, Funplex, Give Me Back My Man, and Roam. They are quite talented and still do limited touring. They're a blast to watch!

Cindy Wilson and Kate Pearson harmonize incredibly well. You can really hear it on "Roam" or "Topaz." Kate has a distinctive voice and has done songs with REM and Iggy Pop.

The B-52s mastered the art of singing absolutely ridiculous songs with a straight face. Pure fun, nothing more. The only aim of this song is to put a smile on the listeners face and it accomplishes this tenfold.

Ahh, Dude, you cracked me up! you had a similar reaction to what I had the first time I saw these critters on Saturday Night Live back in 1980. I thought it was a skit at first and then I saw a 45 of this at the store. I ended up buying and it drove my mother and sister nuts.

The band members are actually Primary School Teachers who preformed at their conventions.
Love Shack would have been a better choice. This was their first hit though. React to the Sweet ,Wig Wam Bam or Blockbuster.

You had to be there. lol The band was an avant garde , performance art type band early on, with fantastic musical chops, vocals / harmonies, and just a lot of fun. As they went on, the music got more serious, and several works on the Cosmic Thing LP were lush, layered, and just smooth as silk. The two best to me were "Roam" and "Topaz." "Love Shack" was on that LP as well, and hearkened back to their party band, new wave roots. They're a fantastic band, and are still touring. My overall favorite by them is probably "Mesopotamia," great beat, dance able, fantastic thumping bassline, especially live. This is another band my older sister turned me onto. She and all her girl friends were dancing to it one night when they stayed over. She was a huge influence on my musical tastes.

Ah the "New Wave" of the late 70s / early 80s. I was a DJ at a University radio station that focused on New Wave (nothing top 40). We played a lot of great bands before they "made it". The B-52s were one of those groups. Fun sound.

I'm sitting here LOL LMAO watching your reaction to this song haha. I worked in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea down here in Florida when this song came out and we went absolutely berserk the first time we heard it. Great song by a great band. Two other songs I remember at the same time was Brass in Pocket by The Pretenders and Refugee by Tom Petty. Those were the three songs that they played the death and we loved it. Your reaction was very funny.

This song came out when I was 9-10 and I *loved* it. My aunt Denise played it for us. She was the best...she was in her mid-upper teens and always played the best music. She introduced me to Cars by Gary Numan, too. Possibly the same year.

I don’t know if you noticed, but the guitar player removes the two middle strings. He plays with just four strings, and uses all kind of weird, alternate, tunings . Genius.
