this is a cover of a 1972 song written by Bobby Russel and sung by none other than Vickie Lawrence...that's right Momma from Momma's Family.
Returning home from a two-week trip to a place called Candletop, a man, identified only as "Brother", stops for a drink at Webb's Bar before going home to his wife. While there, he encounters his friend Andy, who informs him that Brother's wife has had affairs with both Andy and another man, "that Amos boy, Seth."
Brother, angry and scared, goes home to find his gun, presuming his wife's continued absence was because she had left town, and quietly makes his way through the woods to Andy's house. On the way there he finds a set of footprints leading up to and back from the house, but they look too small to have been made by Andy. Arriving at Andy's back door, Brother looks through the screen and, to his horror, finds Andy's dead body. To get the attention of the Georgia State Patrol, Brother fires a shot in the air; the sheriff on patrol mistakenly assumes that the gunshot was the one that killed Andy and arrests Brother for murder. In a show trial, the judge wastes little time declaring Brother guilty of Andy's murder and then sentencing him to death by hanging, which is carried out in short order.
The story wraps up as the narrator, revealing herself as Brother's younger sister, confesses that it was she who had left the footprints that her brother had encountered on his way to Andy's house, and that she had not only shot and killed Andy with her own gun, but the adulterous wife as well, in her case disposing of the body in a way that no one would ever find it.
In the song's chorus, Little Sister blames the Georgia criminal justice system for Brother's death, warning the listener "Don't trust your soul to no backwoods Southern lawyer, 'cause the judge in the town's got blood stains on his hands."

"The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" is a Southern Gothic song, written in 1972 by songwriter Bobby Russell and sung by (his then wife) Vicki Lawrence, an American pop music singer, actress, author and comedian (co-star on The Carol Burnett Show). Lawrence's version, from her 1973 Bell Records album of the same name, was a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 after its release. In addition to several other renditions, the song was again a hit in 1991 when Reba McEntire recorded it for her album For My Broken Heart. McEntire's version was a single, as well, reaching number 12 on Hot Country Songs.
Released as a single in June 1972, the song would ultimately become a number-one success for Lawrence, topping the Hot 100 chart in early 1973. Lawrence was, at the time, a regular performer on the ensemble variety comedy television show The Carol Burnett Show; on the final episode of the sixth season (March 24, 1973), Burnett surprised Lawrence by presenting her with an RIAA gold record for over a million copies sold. The song also scored number six on the Easy Listening chart, and it peaked at number 36 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart. It was number one for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, and was finally topped by Tony Orlando and Dawn's "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree". Billboard ranked it as the No. 11 song for 1973.
In Canada, the single version scored number one, as well, topping the RPM 100 national singles chart on May 5 of the same year.On the RPM Country Singles chart, it reached #25.

I was a radio announcer in Country radio starting in the late 90s when parents were freaking out because their kids were listening to "Gangsta" Rap at the time. It was actually kind of a big deal during that era. I used to make fun of what I referred to as "Violent Gangsta Country" when I played this song, as well as several Johnny Cash tunes and going all the way back to Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell! I would say to my listeners, "Yeah, Rap tries, but we have the market CORNERED where it comes to sex and violence!" It didn't always make me popular, but it sure made people think! To this day, I challenge you to show me the poetic difference between Merle Haggard and Dr. Dre! It's the stories of people who have seen some serious shit! That simple.

This song has a pretty cool history. Vicki Lawrence, of The Carol Burnett Show and Mama's Family, first made it famous. Her first husband, Bobby Russell, was the songwriter. Vicki Lawrence took the song to number 1 in 1973 and received a gold record. Surprisingly, as popular as it is among fans, Reba's version peaked at number 12 on the Billboard charts.
I personally love Reba and am grateful to you for noticing the lyrics above the music. She has always been one to want to tell a great story through her songs so that she may connect with her audience and is very selective in that category.

She stopped performing live, I believe, after the Columbine school shooting. At least for a little while. She didn't feel comfortable singing about shooting someone, with kids in the audience after that. I don't know if she ever played it again since I've never seen her live.

Jeremy Bro I'm sorry, I can't find anything to back up my claim, but I clearly remember her saying that she was going to stop playing it. BUT, in looking onRUclips, I have found newer liver versions by her, so she at some point started singing it again.
