Beautiful Restoration of Antique 1890s Piano Stool

  • When I saw this well worn piano stool in a thrift store it spoke to me. "Help me, I am buried under all this paint! My leg fell off and my arms are broken. I know you can do it Cynthia! Save me."
    Well, I am a sucker for challenges to I paid $30 and took it to my shop. It ended up being a pretty big challenge to repair two broken spindles and to removed all that white paint!
    This stool was made between 1830 and 1890. I knew it was old but did not realize that is was THAT old.
    As most of you know, I usually take one week to refinish a project but the fact that this took 2 weeks is an indication of how much more was involved in bringing this little stool back to life.
    While most of this video is without spoken words, I felt the need to add a narrative to explain in detail what I did to repair the spindle broken at the joints. As I worked on this stool I pictured it being used in a theater where they were playing silent films with a piano for background music. Or perhaps at a theater with vaudeville shows. Gosh, the stories this chair could tell...
    Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy the video and the final restoration.

    I watched another refinished who had a great technique for stripping ornate places on pieces he was stripping. He mixed stripper and sawdust until it was about oatmeal consistency the used a toothbrush to work it into carved or edges. The sawdust acted like sand paper as the stripper softened the paint. Really worked well.

    Amazing. And yes, the sound of the piano has been recovered.
    I have a question….
    In a few videos you needed to bleach some wood. In one video you used a commercial wood bleach solution and in another video you use a household 3:1 bleach mixture.
    Which solution do you recommend?

    • @FurnitureFlippingForProfit
      @FurnitureFlippingForProfit  Год назад +1

      It is very hard to get the commercial wood bleach solution. I do not know why. I finally found it at menards and had to special order it (since we do not have menards where I live). Therefore, I usually use household bleach. I prefer the commercial wood bleaching solution! It works very quickly! Much faster than household bleach. Oxalic acid simply does NOT work as well as the other 2.
