Editing software:
I use Adobe Photoshop but...
A good free alternative to Photoshop is GIMP found at www.gimp.org. Many of the same tools as Photoshop and totally free!
Love your work ! have used Pastelmat for awhile now and follow and another pastel artist I follow rubs the pastel in with foam insulation( that you use for pipes ) cut into small pieces for a blurred or soft background. Works really well, saves your fingers, on this paper.
That's a good tip Susan! I also use some Panpastel blending tools and other blenders. But I love fingertips too :-)
Lovely work Emma. Love your narration, your thought pattern, and your voice.
Thanks Jay! :-)
Love your demo. Your voice is soothing and your explanation so informative. Thank you for sharing your talent :)
Thanks Chrissey!
I forget how pretty you are when you do voice overs... :-) This was a really useful video. I will go back to this when needed. Thank you!
Aw thank you Katie, that's really sweet of you :-)
Wonderful demonstration - love the way you show the colors on the side!!
Thank you Louise! I do that to help with learning about colour theory and all the different subtle tones required for painting realistically. Glad it's helpful!
I wish I had found this before I attempted a blurred background! Thanks this is very informative and easy to follow. I am a new pasteler .
what a great work ! i like it very much.. keep it up
This is a great video Emma and very helpful! 😊

thank you! this is beautiful!
Nice! This was so helpful!
Tank you for the tutorial Emma : )
Beautiful as always Emma :o).......I have a question on using Velour paper, despite rubbing really well after every layer, my paintings still have the pastel coming off :o(.
As I sell my art, this is a big problem when sending in the post, as I worry that the pastel painting will have completely come off by the time the client receives it!! Do you have an answer to this? I do not have the same problem with pastelmat which I also use. I hope you can help otherwise I have some very expensive pads going to waste.
Hi Angie, yes velour does behave differently to Pastelmat for sure. There are a lot of things I do to ensure their longevity including mounting the paper so that it's a firm board and not floppy. You've mentioned you're already rubbing your layers in well. The key is really using thin layers so that you're actually staining the paper's fibres with lower layers and not filling the knapp of the paper. I post my work worldwide though and have literally hundreds of velour paintings hanging in frames with no issues. Don't be disheartened though, I too found the problems you're experiencing when I first tried velour, but after time I've got the feel of it. Check out my video on posting pastels as it's velour in particular I post a lot of the time with no trouble. Good luck!
Wonderful! I know velour is not an easy surface to work on.
Hola. Magnífico video y gran trabajo. Tengo una duda: ¿cómo haces para que, una vez pintado, el pastel no se suelte del papel velour? Un saludo.
Muchas gracias Diana! Mi Español no es muy bueno. I rub all the layers into the fibres of the paper as I work. A good pastel paper will hold the pigment, it does not just fall off unless it gets a hard impact. Even then, only a little might fall off. Once it is framed that protects it for life.
@@EmmaColbertArt Thank you. Well, my English is not very good. But I'm going to try. I love Hahnamühle velour paper. I like it but I have to put in too much pigment. I never use a fixative on my pastels and I thought you could use one that you would recommend me.
I don't use fixative either. You can on the lower layers on velour but I use very thin layers and rub them well into the paper. Once framed my work does not need fixed.
Thanks @@EmmaColbertArt
You are as beautiful as your drawings ( which is very beautiful) 😉
