Great video Emma. Love the way you used impressionist paintings to talk about the colors.
An amazing tutorial showing and explaining the colour theory with complemental colours! But the showing of how to use them, is exceptional. I love all the teaching and whats in the background that goes with your tutorials that what makes them so harmonisch etc is amazing. I am learning so much from you - you have a library of knowledge and how you teach it is gold worth, your examples using it are awesome! 🙏💕
Thank you so much for this terrific tutorial! I have watched so many tutes on RUclips, and they all show the colour wheel and talk about complimentary colours, triads etc, but they rarely go on from there. You went on to discribe HOW to actually use this information and gave lots of visual examples. I learned a lot from this video - many thanks!
Thanks Bonnie. That's what I found also. I learned my colour theory from staring at Impressionist paintings until what they were doing made sense! That's why I show examples.
This is the best color theory tutorial I've found anywhere. It stands out because it talks about how to apply color theory in more subtle contexts to create aesthetic effects and to describe subjects more faithfully.
Thanks .this taught me a lot especially when you point out all the orange highlights in your Portrush painting . The added examples from other well known artists was a great bonus . Very generous with your teaching .thank you . Looking forward to more lessons
I have so much trouble with color theory. You make sense to me and I would appreciate your continuing the information. Thx so much!
Emma, I have only recently discovered you and your channel and can't get enough! As a new student of pastel, your generosity such as this EXCELLENT color theory video is invaluable in coaching and educating the student or interested pastel artist, regardless of painting style. The depth of information you provide, the superb painting examples, and the focus on demonstrating the information back to your own paintings solidifies the concepts you are presenting. I've learned more from you than I've learned in locally offered pastel class. Sincere, sincere thanks and kudos!
Thanks Cynthia for the generous feedback! That's great to know :-)
This was very helpful and confirmed what I thought I was seeing other artists do. Your portraits are wonderful and capture the character of the animals.
Your use of examples of other artists really helped to explain the principles of complementary color theory exceptionally well. I had not noticed the relationships you highlighted, and those paintings are now more rich. Thanks!
Thank you! So glad you found it helpful
@@EmmaColbertArt I'm pretty sure that Red and Cyan are opposites, Green and Magenta are opposites, and Blue and Yellow are opposites
@@nickytembo4112 you're right when talking about the CMY model which I actually mention in this video. I even show the colour wheel you're talking about. But not in the traditional model RGB which this video is based on. Neither are wrong in my opinion, just a different approach. I think if you're mixing paint or working digitally the CMY may be better.
Wonderful job explaining color theory Emma. I’m definitely going to save this one so I can use it for reference. Thanks so much.
Really cool and helpful as well as well produced piece.
What a fantastic explanation 👍 you’re so clever Emma. I never get sick of watching your paintings, they are sooooo beautiful xx
Thank you Emma for a great tutorial on the subtle use of complimentary colours.
Thank you Emma! The examples were really helpful to illustrate the concepts for me. I'll look forward to learning more.
Great lesson!! Vibrating compliments wow! Thank you Emma!
Loved this video, Emma.
Thanks so much emma, I've been looking out for this since you announced it a while back. This is going to help a lot.
A very helpful video. Thank you.
Very much information. Very interesting. Thank you very much
Excellent video Emma, I personally struggle a wee bit with colour theory, so I need to really study it a bit more. I am saving up to buy a print or the original painting you show at the beginning of your videos. That painting you have done brings so many emotions to me when I see it. My Granny and Granda when they were alive lived in Breada Drive, Newtownbreada Belfast and from their back bedroom were I used to sleep when I stayed over with them, shows David and Goliath and it is similar scene to your painting. It just reminds me of wonderful times I spent with my grandparents. You are such a wonderful Artist Emma.
Thanks! Love that part of the city, have some happy memories of that view also.
Love this! Please make more on colour theory. It’s everything. You’re amazing Emma
Thank you for this beautiful, and understandable, explanation. It will definitely help me.
Thank you Emma. Very nice video
Amazing class! Thank you so much!
Excellent. Thank you!!
Lovely video Emma,
I have learnt so much from your examples. Keep it up.🖌🤗🤗
This has helped me a lot. Thankyou
Thank you so much for this. Its going to be a game changer in my work!
Thank you so much, Emma! 🎨🙏
Learned a lot here. Thanks Emma. More please .
Thank you, Emma, for the color theory videos. They are so very informative, and I love the approach you use along with example paintings. I’m hoping these videos will enhance my understanding of color theory. Again, THANK YOU!
myself as well . . . when you use examples of your art and the older artists. on this one though, as much as I love monets' works, it went by so fast and even though I stopped it I couldn't see any violets.
I love your work!
Another fantastic video x
wonderful videos and beautiful examples, thank you! :)
Wonderful examples and concisely presented to be easily understood by even the most nascent beginners! I so enjoy watching your comparison with your own works. You are such a lovely presenter and very knowledgeable too! I look forward to watching your next video and learning how to use Pastels more to my advantage! Thank you Emma!
Thank you! Presenting is definitely not my natural day job so that's nice to hear :-)
Very helpful.
Wow! Thank you!
really cool videos!
Wonderful!
Thank you!!
Thank you for this. That Sea scene ooks photographic.
Thank you!
This area has been my downfall without me even realising, Emma. I'm definitely going to prioritise this in my next work.
Damn, this is nice!
I really appreciate this Emma. I am slowly getting a little bit more of an understanding and also beginning to see more colors as I use your channel here on youtube and the patreon page. what I would like personally is, for the beginner, if you do another vid, of one such as this, could you draw a red line, just for this kindergartner, from the color swatch to the place on the dog or elk etc, where that color is used. that would be very helpful.
I know it's hard to see in the beginning. If you have Photoshop you can literally bring your image in, use the colour dropper and see the colour chosen. It's often a surprise! There are many ways to help improve seeing colour. It definitely becomes easier.
@@EmmaColbertArt fantastic idea! I have ps and know how to do that! Thanks
Love these easy to follow instructional videos you make; looking forward to more! Thank you!
idk if this is normal but my favorite color is light blue but i also adore brown
Brown is really just a dark orange, so your favourites are opposites :-)
A true master at work. Look upon her works and despair. You will never be that good.
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Can more yellow get the purple out?
👍🏻😁
the subtle use of colour is much easier to live with. Vibrant colours cheapens an artwork and adds an amateur quality to a painting
yellow and purple are the worst two colors to put together though
Nature disagrees :-)
Wow your Unisons are larger than mine. Hummm..
Maybe it's just seeing them huge on screen. Mine are definitely the normal size :-)
