I've been using Velour Board since I started pet portraits 40 years ago. I sprayed them with a fixative and to date, 40 years later, they've never gotten darker or bled onto the glass. I'm anxious to use PastelMat but am having a difficult time ordering it here. Thanks for your lovely tutorials, Emma!!

I love this video! The first time I used velour was back in 1972. I was 17 years old, and read an old Walter Foster book about painting horses in pastel on velour. I loved it. We used hair spray for fixative back then Emma. You sure have helped advance the art of pastel painting on velour by leaps and bounds! Thank you! 🎨

Oh my goodness, I wish I had seen this video first! I ordered all the Unison colors individually from your set from another US online store (after watching many of your videos) because they didn’t have the stand alone set and was told they wouldn’t be shipping in the Unison foam trays or boxes after I placed my order (which I now need to buy separately from the UK (I’m in California) along with the Prym storage box (there are a few sellers here) - I just checked Dakota, they have your full animal portrait set in stock, I wish I had known about them but will buy all my future supplies for your classes from them after seeing this video. I’ve been admiring your videos for several weeks, looking forward to joining your classes after all my supplies arrive. Thank you for making it so easy to acquire the knowledge on how to get started and what to buy. I have been slowly collecting supplies for many years (mostly pencils and a test stick of soft pastels from various brands) but had never heard of Unison, their color range is so soft and natural, I saw their website that shows how they are made, it’s a pretty incredible story behind their history. You are a fantastic teacher and artist Emma. Thank you so much for these amazing videos.

Thank you Emma, some great tips, I'll be sure to try thinner layers of pastel on my next piece of work and even a light spray of fixative maybe, pressing in my highlights is a good tip thank you, they do seem to fall off.

Great tips! I'm about to use velour for the first time ever. The feel us very strange and I'm definitely going to have to back it onto board as it's so floppy. Wish me luck 😂 I'm going to need it, in nowhere near as good as you lol
Excellent tips and advice Emma, I have accumulated a lot of different pastels because my channel is essentially an art supply review channel. Because of channels like yours Emma I have been in complete awe at the beautiful work a pastel artist such as your good self can achieve. This got me into trying my own pastel art and I have tried a few papers and love Pastelmat, but I always see the Velour paper online and always think of your work, I think I will definitely give it a try but I feel my abilities with pastel are not yet refined enough for this type of paper. I watched you video on mounting and I think I would have to purchase it pre-mounted because I am too clumsy to achieve a good job doing it myself. Any way, excellent video as always and fantastic advice, thank you.
Thanks for the feedback! I know there is a limited amount of information out there about pastel in comparison to oils or watercolour for example. So I'm happy to add to it. If you want to try it mounted I believe Dakota do it that way. No harm in trying it unmounted but if you should want to frame or store long term unframed, mounting helps!

Excellent video! Wish I’d have known about using nothing softer than velour before I tried it lol, but quickly learnt unison and pastel pencils worked great. Great tips for framing, I’ve never heard of the wooden inner piece, the frame looks like a plein air one which I recently heard about.

I wish I had done some pastel matting in the past! I will look for some examples but so far not much have I found. I think I understand how to proceed to make a mat with space between. If you ever decide to show us how to on that subject I would be an avid watcher!!
Yes the paper does feel strange I get chills when when I blend lol, but paintings look so beautiful on this. Thank you for the tips Emma attaching the paper to the foam board is so helpful the floppyness is quite frustrating.

I will do that soon. With travelling this past couple of years I don't have much framed work at the moment myself. But I will do a better video on framing as that's so important. Will get together some examples soon :-)
have you ever tried mixing watercolours on velour paper with soft pastel? How does velour paper absorb the water or does it repel/bead off?
Avoid putting water on velour paper. (Hope you didn't try it already!) It does not react well to water. Pastelmat is very nice to use with wet media.
First of all Thank you for sharing you Artistic Gifts-Talent and Work Ethic. I'm new to this -a year or so- A couple of quick questions...do you use any kind of gloves or do you wash your hands a lot-this is regarding Toxins in the Pigment and Dust do you wear a mask? Your work is Inspiring.
Thank you Dave! No I don't wear gloves and I don't create enough dust to worry about breathing a lot of it in. The toxin warnings on the boxes of some pastels are really that. You would actually have to ingest a large amount of pastel for it to be toxic. Same with it getting on your skin. I would say that anyone with respiratory problems might find it aggressive. I would avoid if you have pre-existing problems. But I have no issues with them.
Hi Emma. I just love watching you paint! I used velour paper for the first time recently and really struggled with it. I love soft pastels as a medium and find them excellent for portrait work which I've been doing for years. I wanted to experiment with different papers and having done some research this sounded good. There seemed to be no way of blending the layers of colours, and also the edges of the mark making couldn't be blended in?? Maybe it's just not for me. I wish I hadn't bought a sketch pad of the paper.. It seemed better value that way. Would love your opinion ! Thanks again

Hi Denise, all papers take some time to get used to so don't give up on one when you don't like it first time. I'd also recommend a selection pack of papers by Jackson's Art or something similar. It allows you to try a small amount of several papers before committing to a large amount. This was perfect Emma, I do have a question. What easel is that? I love how it has a draw in it, I was thinking about making an attachment for my H-frame easel to hold my pastels that I can remove when I am not working in pastel.

Thank you so much. Ive used velour for years but what can you do to fix creases in brand New paper? Here in the US I purchase the paper at Blick .
If the paper arrives creased you should tell your supplier and see if they will exchange. A small amount of crease can be fixed by mounting the velour on self adhesive board. But a sharp line or crease will not come out well. If any pastel paper has an imperfection it's worth trying to exchange.

No fixative needed on most good quality papers. You can spray in between the layers if you want and some artists use that to get a different texture on the paper. But it's not needed.

How do you prevent smudging can you varnish it or a fixant I think you called it to protect the painting
I don't use fixative or varnish or anything that will affect the colours over time. Once my work is framed behind glass that is it's protection. Pastel work usually needs framed behind glass.
would you recommend tapping the back of the upturned velour painting a few times to rid of excess pastel ? like a person suggested .. I thought this would be a no no.
As long as the velour is mounted on something firm. Yes I sometimes do this before posting a piece if I'm worried I've been a little heavy handed in some areas. The pigment that is rubbed in will not go anywhere just some excess from the top layer.
I am currently working on velour pastel paper which, since I have a light touch normally, suits me well. I just wanted to know if you ever use fixative when the painting is done. And what type of board do you use for backing? I did use self-adhesive foam board, but would prefer something else. Thank you!
I'm still using the self adhesive foam board as it works well and it's light to post. You can buy the sheets of velour already mounted from some place. Dakota pastels do them. I don't use fixative but I did at one point spray some in between layers. I suppose as I've got lighter with my touch and I don't feel the need to use it.

Hi Emma, I am following your tutorials for Velour paper, I have just started on my first portrait of a dog, used soft pastels, but find it hard to get whiskers over the final piece, I tried pastel pencils but they make no impact. any suggestions please. thank you in advance.

I have painted lots of water on this paper. I also recommend Pastelmat for starting out though. It holds many layers which you want.

Try Dakota Pastels in the US. I find many things in their shop online that I can't find elsewhere. I believe they also do the suede paper/board.

I you buy a pad, do they put glassine paper between the sheets like they do with pastelmat?
From memory I think they do. But I'm not 100% sure as I only buy the loose sheets these days.

Yes that's the sheet size. The biggest I can find is from Dakota pastels in the US. I haven't found them anywhere else.

Hi Julie, thank you! I only do about 2 workshops a year. I'm from Ireland but live in Spain but go to both Ireland and Holland to teach. I try to limit those as I prefer to paint and make videos of course! The best way to learn from me is to have a look on Patreon. Emma, another question - what kind of easel do you have? I'd like to have such a french box easel, but the one I had ordered from Jullian fell apart before I even had taken it out of the parcel.
Hi Ulrike, that sounds like you got a bad one. I've had a Jullian easel for 7 years now and it's still amazing. And for 4 of those years I lived in a van and put the easel up and down every day so it has had lots of abuse. Hope you got a replacement as it doesn't sound like the usual quality from Jullian.

What kind of board do you adhere the velour paper to? And what do you adhere it with?
I have seen a video of someone doing this but unsub'd them eventually. Anyway type in "mounting pastel paper to foam board" and that may get you started in the right direction. Typing it on this website search bar at the top.

Hi! Do you frame yourself your paintings??
Hi David, I did at the very start and it's fine if you can do a good job of it. What I found was as I got busier I had no time left. Also I realised that to exhibit in nicer galleries my work had a better chance of selling in a professional frame. Now I treasure my main framer and love seeing the high standard he can produce to finish off my work.
I saw an artist a few years ago in an art magazine say that after finishing her pastel painting she would lay grease proof paper on her painting and then roll it firmly with a rolling pin,she said that it helped to keep the pastel on the paper....any comments about that idea?
I know many artist who roll their pastel work. I don't for many reasons but it's not to say they're wrong. Just different style of work that could take this. Mine are firm boards that don't bend so not possible.
What brand of colored pencils are they✨💗
I use mostly Faber Castell pastels pencils which are different from coloured pencils. I also use some Caran d'Ache, and a few other brands but have most of the Faber Castells.

Yes, glass is necessary to protect and preserve a pastel

Hi Michael, I've found that the Pans work better on Pastelmat than velour. The main problem being how Pans are applied. You will need to experiment with applicators that are not spongey like the main PanPastel applicators as those don't go well on velour. I just prefer to immediacy of the sticks in applying pigment to the paper which suits velour well.

Do use any alcohol or water to wash on this type of paper.
I don't tend to bring moisture anywhere near velour. It's texture doesn't seem to like it. Having said that I did see someone do an acrylic underpainting on it. I'm not sure how that would work though as I imagine you would flatten all the fibres of the paper by wetting it.
How do you get your sketch? I trace the photo if the paper is small but if I want a larger sized work, how do you do the sketch? I don’t trust myself doing freehand. My proportions are not good.

Have you heard of people using watercolor on valour paper?
No I really haven't because velour paper doesn't like to get wet. A stray drop of water can be a problem if you don't let it try properly before patching it in. So I would be surprised to hear of watercolour being used on it. Pastelmat for sure though!

how do you even have the finances to BEGIN
It's true the good quality stuff costs quite a bit. But I started on cheap student grade materials and was able to learn. I added a small amount of good quality as and when I could over many years. But it's still possible to get going on a budget.
