If anyone doubts whatever he says, don’t. It’s true, I own a 2004 M54 X5, very reliable X5, owner it for 17 years. Beautiful designed SUV, it handles great and mine is mint on the paint. Never left me stranded. It does everything I need it to do, all year around all seasons, starts up in negative degree weather (Fahrenheit). It does real off-roading and doesn’t get me stuck or any problems. It’s very solid.

These really are very good cars and your case is proof. They always make me wonder why anyone would buy a new Qashqai on finance when you can get this superior car for a fraction of the price? :) (Also, I think you meant to say 16 years because you can’t have had a 2004 car for 17 years - it’s only 16 years old 😂)

BMW made cars of that era TOO good, and I don't think BMW would ever make cars like that again even if they wanted to. They don't want you loving your BMW too much, because you won't trade it in for a new model if you do. In fact, one of the BMW execs recently went on a rant telling people to shut up about the E46.

An E39 Touring is a cheaper and easier to maintain option and very nearly matches the load carrying capacity of the E53
When I bought my E39 3.0D Tourings I did a cost comparison with the E53 3.0d. Running costs (fuel, tyres...) and maintenance costs were significantly more epensive on the E53 not to mention significanyly more complex.

After watching this video last week as well as many more about the e53. I went and bought one of these on a 54 plate and i only had it 1 week and my god what a machine. I am not sure if mine has been tuned because I am shocked at how quick such a big car can move with ease and the handling is bang on point. Don't get me started on how comfortable it is also. So glad I went with this car. Thanks for all the help and to anyone thinking of getting one just go and get one.

Upgraded the the M57 E70 35d and never looked back, they have since upgraded and I have inherited it. Fully deleted stage 1 DDE tune and XHP stage 1 TCU tune. Poured tons of money into but I absolutely love it. 317k kms.

I am the second owner to a 2006 E53 3.0 that I bought when it had 188,000. It now has 228,000. Other than a fuel pump at 206,000 and a fan clutch the vehicle has been a beast! Hate to part with her but we have a 2011 xdrive 35i, (nothing but trouble) also own a 2005 545, 217,000 daily driver as well as a Mercedes E350 wagon with only 109,000, so it’s time for E53 to go to a new home. The M54 engine is bulletproof and good to 300,000 miles all day long.

I bought one in Dec.2019, 55reg (112k mls, 3.0d, 218hp) leather heated seats, heated steering wheel, panoramic roof.
It's an old vehicle with many owners and each one of them treated the car how they knew best.
We all know that you need a annual budget when buying such a vehicle.( I also own an 520i-e39 53reg and sold my 635d-e64 09reg last year )
For me it's OK. I know it will ask for money but it's very fun to drive.
As soon as i bought it, I changed all the filters and oil and the rear bushings - instant improvement.
Now, after 12 months some of the injectors failed. At the moment is at the mechanic. Since the intake manifold was removed for accessing the injectors, I wanted to put a cancellation kit for the swirl flaps... my model does not have swirl flaps. Because of the complexity of the job, i decided to change all the injectors -refurbished (£972 VAT Incl) also found after testing 4 glow plugs have failed. Battery also gone, when we had this few cold days.
In Dec 2020, went to electronics specialist for failed BM54 radio module -£200.

I’ve an exact model from year 2005 since 2007. I’m the second owner after rally driver Richard Burns who had bought it for his hse in Spain hence it is a left hand drive. Also the reason I had to buy it as BMW export sales had refused to sell me one to take to Djibouti because they have no agents there. At the time my wife had a 2005 petrol version which was fantastic but for my project in Africa, the diesel was perfect with its massive torque , addictive mid-range acceleration and fuel economy not to mention diesel is 40% cheaper in Djibouti. Maintaining it over in Djibouti has been seriously challenging and even had to ship it to Dubai a few years ago for some proper servicing. With only 40k miles on the clock today and huge amount of money spent fixing many issues, the car drives like no other SUV I own which are newer. All the newer X5 models don’t give me the same sensation the e53 gives me. A truly drivers car. Love it to bits and one I will keep forever.

I am the second owner of a 2002 E53 3.0 petrol (sadly no diesels available) model X5. The paint is pristine and I just hit 73,000km. The only real problem was a stripped front drive shaft that I encountered last week. Easily (and cheaply) replaced by the local non stealership BMW mechanic. I replaced the existing screen radio due to bad pixels with an aftermarket Eonon. Other than the the maintenance issues identified by the ‘Doc, this motor is a dream to drive. I just drove 1,000km in 2 days last week on a trip and it was smooth and comfortable all the way. I have to agree on the styling and and its ‘ageless’ appeal. I have owned several BM’s up to and including the F10 535, but I enjoy the X5’s driving character above all others. Enough said.

I do not believe you, If you have the money to buy a new recent one, why buy this one? I mean sure its a nice car but its old, the new one has a different degree of luxury and deign and tech....Did you buy it as a nostalgia piece to drive sometimes or what? The only reason I would buy this is for the handling and drive feel witch the new one does not have because of the electronic steering and floaty suspension

Guy said it was normal for these cars but I suspected it was transmission confusing 1st gear/2nd and on its way out. He said advise. Not to change fluid as it can make it worse. I’m guessing it’s probably the filter or mechatronic sleeve it lucky but may need new auto box?

I still have my 2004 e53 4.4l @130k miles. The car seems fine EXCEPT during warm up on cold mornings. These past few years I just 'hope' to take care of the CEL to pass inspection. I normally start shopping for a replacement car, just in case. But then I actually fix the issue by changing spark plugs one year, a vacuum hose another year, knock sensors this year... simple emissions related fixes in general. I'm unlucky in completely fixing valve cover oil leaks but oil leak in general is greatly reduced now, especially after fixing that oil cooler o-ring issue.
"One more year", but possible i get more after :)

I owned a few of these E-53's when new and non of the newer models come close to them. Sad that BMW has lost it's way by building oversized, over teched and over bloated uglier models these days. Good honest review.

I'd like to know if this car can handle well in floods that reach the grill. I'm asking because a couple of SUVs/Sedans shut down in floods. While some other just keep driving.

In South Africa they are not a wise purchase because they come with an inherent Hijack risk factor. They are very sturdy built and have plenty of power so they serve well as a vehicle to be used to ram cash in transit vehicles. Lovely vehicles though.

totally agree best looking x5 by a mile, in fact best car i have ever had, nothing else comes close, much nicer looking than e70, and drives better too, the e70, it should be better than e53 but, it isnt. the diesel is without doubt the model to go for.

I bought an 01 3.0i for 900 dollars , when I got to the person's house I was buying it from I figured the 900 was a mistake 🤣 the interior is all but brand new looking and everything works , the engine runs strong the transmission is smoothe I had to replace a headlight . The body is flawless , no dents , no rust . This damn car is some kind of magical thing 😂 it runs better than some new cars I've been in and it's just so solid . Seriously if you are considering getting bogged down in monthly payments for a new car , save the money take your down payment and outright buy an e53 ! Wait til you drive it in the snow ! Damn thing is a tank , I have purposely tried to get stuck and I can't , even with half worn all season tires. Really if you are in the market for a used vehicle consider one of these , just do your homework and shop around for a winner.

Your e53 looks nice and all, but that e70 sits proper like as well, especially with the sports package and 315s in the back. I kinda wish the e70 had the hood vents like your does.

I see you mention about not remapping them. I have one of these since 2012. I did do a light remap back then. But over the last few years she smokes a lot on power up and until i drive it 20 or 30feet it will not clear smoke. Only happens in the morning.
    Maybe leaking valve seals?
Must say one if the best cars/suv ive owned. Thats why i have it so long

I've own the E53 2003 facelift till now 2021. One of the best car I've driven no issue and no problem at all just wear and tear. If you want to enjoy your BMW, get a good mechanic your BMW will last forever without any problem. Most of the time all these continental car are cause by mechanic who don't know their shit and will give lots of excuses and bad name to the car. I own a JAPANESE car too that I when to the wrong mechanic, the mechanic can't solve the problem too. Wanted to change this beast to the GLC250 or XC60, this 2 car drives like a Japanese car I've to say and the E53 driving experience are still the best. End up I kept this beast and change my Japanese car.
