    my son, who finally at the age of early three, is trying very hard to repeat everything I say. Some sounds (i.e. bbb, mmm, ooo, ppp, ttt) he is doing very well but other sounds he is not even close (i.e. fff, etc.) but more importantly he will only do the beginning sound and not the whole word. For example, for the word "open", he will say "o" but not both syllables (i.e. "o" and "pen"). Also, do you recommend he does PECs? we have been emphasizing PECs but it seems he is trying hard to speak and maybe PECs is not the right option. One speech therapist is emphasizing PECs; his other speech therapist at school wants to emphasize oral speech. He is babbling alot and really trying hard to repeat what I say but it is really off.

    • @marybarbera
      @marybarbera  5 лет назад

      I usually continue with oral speech and introduce sign language. Have you watched my video on how to use a shoebox? Check that out and also check out my free workshops bit.ly/2ELvSnM

    I am an ABA therapist.
    Language bombardment!!!! Constant nonstop narrative speaking. 3rd person works well. Examples- I want up,- up!up!up! I want juice, juicey! Juicey! Juicey!
    Narrative-Jon likes to run, go! Go! Go! You like the blue block, stack on the red block. How many blocks? 1, 2, 1,2, 1,2, blocks! You smashed the blocks! Yay!!!!(insert smash noise)
    Singing! Noises! Use volume! Repeat everything 3-4 times and use rhythm. Make up songs about all the things they love. Example- jon loves trucks and cars, trucks and cars blue and red, blue and red! John loves mom and dad, mom and dad, nana and papa, nana and papa.
    Relationship gives you eye contact. Encourage every babble or noise. Connection is key to them seeing your mouth and mimicking.
    Remember to have fun! 2 hearts become one.

    Thank you so much for this. My 15 mnth old has delayed speech as well as little non verbal communication. He makes a lot of sounds but since i cant pick out any clear words, I rarely pay any attention when he speaks. I will be more attentive and reinforce the words I can pick out. I have watched some of your videos, and they are really helpful. I will put what you've said into practice.

    Hi. My son is 2.3. He has had no feeding issues so far. He was directly transitioned to cups after breastfeeding, no pacifiers and bottles. Solid food at weaning. He has been sucking from straws since 9months. We have managed to get him to blow also. Now, due to his stimming of teeth grinding and broken teeth, he has been rejecting hard, chewy foods. Will this affect his speech in future? Also, he has no echoic control. How do I achieve this? Like you said, he babbles and speaks a few words here and there. Uses cah for car a lot. Says papa to his dad. And some situational words spontaneously.... How do I encourage echoic control?

    Mary,
    I am a retired 2nd grade teacher. I am currently working with a 3 year old and her 21 month old sister. The baby really only says a few words. Her sister is extremely bright and has an extensive vocabulary. Is late talking more prevalent in the second child -as they are just 15 months apart?? I should reiterate that I am babysitting these beautiful children and the parent thinks that she will just start talking one day! What can I do to help her???
    Thank you very much!

    Hi, I’m a OR/RN on the weekends, but I babysit for a little boy during the week. It has been a awhile since my children were young so I wasn’t sure if I was just out of practice or if there might be something more going on. He is 15mo and I have an extremely hard time getting him to eat solid foods, especially anything with texture. I find a spoon to make it worse. He doesn’t seem to grasp the hand to mouth reflex. Very minimal speech, and not often. I know that I am not his parent and I am certainly not looking for a DX, I really would just like some pointers on how to effectively promote better responses in an appropriate way. Thank you

    Would continued breastfeeding after 2 be a sign of a feeding problem? If the child shows no sign of stopping and constantly wants to nurse?

    • @marybarbera
      @marybarbera  3 года назад

      That is a question for your doctor and if you remain comfortable nursing. If the child is not eating other foods then it may perhaps be.

    My kid has a few pop-out words and doesn't say them on command. He blabbers throughout the day with a lot of different sounds. But most of the blabbering sounds were his tongue doesn't touch the roof of his mouth or tongue goes in a whistling shape. I was breastfeeding him till 4years old. He can drink liquids from an open cup. He is an extremely picky eater.
    Could you please share with me a few ideas on oral articulation and different textures of foods that help his speech?
    My kid is 4 years 4months old boy on the spectrum( moderate to severe). He is on a sugar-free, dairy-free, grain-free( eats a few dried lentils and cereals), and gluten-free diet.
