    What constriction was the Longbeard XR? You indicated the Jebs was .650 but I didn't see you indicate the Longbeard's constriction. You need to compare the same constrictions for a fair evaluation.

    Are you cleaning the barrel and chokes between shots? Both those chokes have wad stopping rings machined into them and need to be cleaned after every shot to be a fair
    comparison.

      If I am hunting a state where I can kill multiple birds in a single day, I won't be stopping to clean. Example: Oklahoma and Kansas last year. Killed one, 2nd bird hung around for a shot.

    I have the Carlsons & I'm happy with it , shooting #5 3" Longbeard XRs.I think you should also do this test at at a real close range , because a choke can be too tight for really close ranges.I would like to see what they do at 10 yards or so.I'm good to about 55 yards with my carlsons with the load I use , & at 10 yards if I'm off target more than about an inch & a half , I might completely miss the bird.I wouldn't want to have less leeway than that.It's easy to pull a shot a little when you are excited & see a turkey.

    • @foxhilloutdoors2134
      @foxhilloutdoors2134  4 года назад +1

      100% agree with you rebelwof72. At the very end of the video, I did a shot at 20 yards to show the tightness of the pattern with the JEBS. In my opinion, the pattern wasn't too tight at that range. I only bought the JEBS bc of how well my first comparison video is doing. Thanks for watching, hope you subscribe! I'm hunting 5 states this year, 4 being brand new to me and all public land 👊🦊

    • @bryantitus6634
      @bryantitus6634 4 года назад +2

      I prefer #5 for turkeys as well. I feel like #6s look better on paper testing, but they don't hit as hard, and it's a noticeable difference in the field if you start to stretch the shots to the point where these choke tubes benefit you on paper. Inside 40 yards, you'll likely rarely notice. But 1 3/4 oz of #4 pattern tight at 40 yards with these chokes too, but lose pattern density much after that.
      #5s I've rolled birds with at 60-65 paces just like they were inside 20 yards. That being said, while I switched over to longbeard xrs and get legit repeatable turkey killing patterns at 70-75 yards, the vast majority of the birds I've killed have all been within 30 yards, and a 2 3/4" game load with #6 shot would do exactly the same job. I bought a box of federal 3rd degree that was clearances at my local gander outdoors when it closed because they do pattern extremely well from 15-55+ yards, but I'd never pay full price for performance that I truly don't think is that special.
      The 20 gauge 3rd degree may very well be the ultimate 20 gauge turkey load however. The longbeard xr pattern rediculously right inside 20-25, but at 50 they are legit performers. But I've missed birds with it inside 25 yards because of it. The 3rd degree loads will give you the 50 yard patterns that duplicate it, but inside 25 yards you get enough 'spray' to give you some cushion.

    Jeff Jeff Jeff, that jebs is amazing. The only time I've seen a pattern like that at 55 yards was out of a 30" barreled 10 gauge goose gun with a Turkey choke in it. 👍👍 I'm sold. I might have to get a jebs before season comes in.

  • @howardfluty566
    @howardfluty566 4 года назад +2

    sorry to be negative but in order to do a fair comparison you need to be shooting off bench to eliminate as much error as possible and you need to have sighted the gun to center the pattern to point of aim...for each load. this is evident especially on the Carlsons 55 yard shot where it is obvious that the pattern is high from point of aim.

  • @lynneldridge480
    @lynneldridge480 3 года назад +1

    I shoot the EXACT same Mossberg as you. One thing I've noticed is that it is more finicky than other turkey guns with regard to shells/chokes that work well with it due to it's shorter barrel. I've got mine tuned in using Hevi-Shot Magnum Blend and their choke tube after running a Carlson for a few years. The Carlson worked good out to 40 yards but then it began to spray...A LOT. Which, is usually fine here in KY where I hunt, but occasionally a bird will hang up 50-60 yards out and it's nice to be able to reach out and touch them now when I used to pass on that shot.

    I ordered a Jebs headhunter last week based on this video. I'm pretty happy with my .660 Carlson but I want a little bit tighter pattern at distance (and I enjoy testing different chokes) so I'm hoping the .650 jebs will give me that. Only thing I would like to point out to everyone is how low the Carlson choke patterned at 55 yards. One of the pellets even hit the gopro which was several feet below and in front of the target. Look at the Carlson's target at 05:44. Now imagine if he had aimed higher and the entire target looked like the bottom 4" of that target. It would be a lot more comparable to the Jebs then... When testing at 50+ yards it would be nice to have a target large enough to show the entire pattern. Still a very nice video...

    Don't get me wrong, I love longbeard xr and run it in my 535 with the Mossberg .670 turkey choke. I get legit repeatable 70+ yard patterns. And there's enough lead in the 3.5" shells to get a little spread in the 15-25 yard range.
    That being said, I have a stoeger 3020 20 gauge with a factory turkey choke, and while on paper, the longbeards are nasty and give me legit 50 yard turkey patterns, inside 20-25 yards it patterns legitimately too tight. There's not enough surrounding "sprayed" pellets to give any 'head bob' cushion. I actually switched to federal grand slam flitecontrol flex 1 5/16oz loads because I have a 1 foot wide pattern at 22 yards (cause that's where the target got put, no significance just was ranged after put out) while still having fully adequate 40 yard patterns and killing 45 yard patterns. I agree with you when you say you don't need aftermarket tubes or specialty shells to kill turkeys inside 30 yards. My 3020 puts out truly impressive 30 yard patterns with a 2 3/4" 1oz #6 high brass game loads. And my father until last year ran a factory full choke and Remington nitro turkeys in his 500, and has killed dozens of birds inside about 40 yards with it.

My Benelli hates an Indian Creek but loves a Comp-N-Choke. My 835 hates a Kicks but loves the Carlsons. I agree. Of coarse there’s a difference in constriction. The Jebs is a tighter choke. I use a Carlson’s 665. At 45 yds. with the same ammo I get a great pattern. Dead turkey all the way.

  • @ngirardo86
    @ngirardo86 3 года назад

  • @kykrazy6050
    @kykrazy6050 4 года назад +1

    Brother the JEBS @ 30 yds. wasn't THAT much better. Also if you would use a bigger target (say 3'x3') you would be able to see your entire pattern. Not to mention the JEBS is going to be shooting tighter because it's a .650 vs .660 with the Carlson's. I'm sorry to say but this video is an interesting but not definitive.

    • @foxhilloutdoors2134
      @foxhilloutdoors2134  4 года назад +1

      The purpose of the different videos I've done on Choke Tubes is determine if they are worth there particular price points. I'm comparing apples to oranges in this video. The constriction difference is huge. The targets on camera may look similar, but what you can't see on camera, is the amount of pellets that were stacked on each other.

    I have a mossberg 835 & 935. This year with longbeard xr I have tested primos jellyhead maximum .690, Carlson longbeard xr .683, Wildside armory .680, hevishot turkey .676, Indian creek .675 & Jebs .655. I have but haven’t tested the patternmaster code black .665. At 45 yards the Jebs and Indian creek are winning without a doubt. All chokes would have killed the turkey but they patterns were better with them

    Appreciate your efforts. However, there’s 2 things that make for a poor test comparison. Smaller pellets constrict much better, thus favoring the #6 and .650. Also, if the Carlson was a .650, you would have a much more even comparison. Always, always shoot a rest to take the human error out of the equation to know the true POI. Never was clear how you counted pellets......

      I shoot the Carlson out of my gun and love it, like fox hill said, each gun shoots a little differently with each choke. The Carlson choke with longbeard XR’s will kill birds out to 50 yards no problem, I have a 26” barrel as well so I’m not sure if that has any effect but the Carlson might work better out of a gun with a longer barrel compared to the 22” turkey guns

    • @mdees88
      @mdees88 3 года назад

      The Carlson is a great a choke. If you look at the pattern at 55 yds he missed way low with Carlson and even hit his gopro. Look at the bottom 4" of the Carlson target at 5:44. If he had aimed higher the entire target would look like that which is very comparable to the Jebs. I just recently bought a Jebs and my Carlson shoots tighter patterns at 40yds.
