I love the Mayan pottery! Even though it wasn't worth the most, the age of it was thrilling! I recently got a pottery vase at the Goodwill, just because it was unusual, and wound up learning all about Dolores Porras! Not 600 years old, but not a bad find for $5! Now everyone in the family knows about my Dolores Porras Face Vase! 😘

One of my biggest regrets thrifting is not buying something I was on the fence about, only to return after making up my mind and it's gone! If my gut says yes, I pull the trigger!
You’re amazing😍just like pieces in a shop they are all different and beautiful. How awful if all the pieces were the same. You are priceless.
You return to the same thrift store on a regular basis because you will see collections being donated. They don’t put it all out on the same day. If you know them, you can ask if they have any more they’ll be putting out. Even with newer collections, a lot of the time there are older pieces mixed in. Asian porcelain marks and identification of real pieces is one of the most difficult areas of antiques. There is so much history to know and you need repeated opportunities for comparisons of Real v. Fake. Just making the distinction between what is Japanese or what is Chinese is a challenge. Got to know colors, dynasties, characters, shapes and on and on. That is why we need a Dr. Lori. Thanks for the humor.

It's an East coast thing, Dr. V!!!😄😄😄 I grew up in an old railroad town named Hornell, in NYS. I learned very early on, that our nuns didn't suffer fools- SO I WAS FOOLISH ON THE DOWN LOW!!!🤣🤣🤣 No beat downs for me!!!😄😄😄👍👍👍
I always tell people, that if they wanna know how it was, back in the day, to watch Martin Scorsese's first documentary (It's on yt), where he filmed his parents just talking about stuff. We kids would hear sooooooooo many stories like in his film, and hand to God, I swear it made us quite savvy!!!💖👍💖
I honestly didn't think you could haggle prices in places like Goodwill or salvation army. Because I tried once for some salt and pepper shakers. They priced them separately and I thought they should've been priced as a set. They wouldn't budge (goodwill)
Never hurts to ask. Just because one person at one location on one specific piece doesn't want to consider moving on the price doesn't mean that everyone will say no. Always ask!

It's so true what dr Lori said about getting to know the store employees. I stopped at the thrift store yesterday and one of the workers that I befriended saw me and told me to wait a moment. She went into the back and brought back several pieces of chinese porcelain. They had been set aside for the next day, but she pulled them for me. It really made my day. :-)

Now many items are being listed online by Goodwill and the majority of what you find at thrift stores are either chipped, cracked, or broken. No problem, I stopped going and have been saving money instead which comes in handy for local estate sales and yard sales.
It's good for you to pass on damaged pieces, but there are still bargains to be found in good old fashion thrift stores. People show these finds to me all the time during my video calls and online appraisals :)

Loved this vid, have gotten into pottery lately, even recent stuff made by students, etc if it catches my eye. Always looking for a deal, because I hear you in my head, Dr. Lori LOL, but mainly keep for my own pleasure, not resale, etc. If kids,etc say they love it, i give it to them, but i always tell them could be worth money so don't throw away if you get tired of it later LOL As always, love your humor, kindness to attendees and of course, the no nonsense, to the point attitude.

I love your pearls. I wear pearls, too. I thrift hunt for them, and have found many beautiful jewelry pieces for very little money. I wear pearls almost every day.

I'm actually doing things right now to gather money so I can yard sale, and thrift store my butt off this summer,...collecting cans, also using my metal detector to dig up some extra scratch just to name a couple ways, lol. I remember when I paid $1 at a yard sale for a 1907 oyster plate, I could seriously use more days like that, lol.
It's still out there Will. Over the weekend someone brought me a find at my event in Columbus, OH that they found at Goodwill. See it in my RUclips story before it expires.

Goodwill store will rarely negotiate, and when they know they have something good, they will mark the price high.
Rarely doesn't mean never. Always ask. Goodwill just missed a valuable that somebody brought to my events over the weekend. See the clip in my RUclips story.
@@DrLoriV True, I did actually do it before, but it was because they had already priced a pair of salt and pepper shakers at 99 cents, then put them in a bag with several other pairs and noted on the bag that the price was 3.23 pair. I asked them to give me the one pair for .99 and they did.
Lockable glass cabinets need to come back in style for all the valuable antiques that cats love to tap over the edge of mantels and dressers ....for their own amusement 😉
