My Dad flew in bombers over Germany during WWII. He was later stationed in Germany in the 1950's with the Air Force and I was born there, but we returned to the US six weeks later so I have no memory of the country. I recently found out the AFB I was born at was in Bavaria and I was surprised when I looked around my house to see how much pottery and porcelain I had collected over the years from Bavaria!

Dr Lori, thank you so much! For the past 20 years I’ve been Trying to identify the boxes of antique porcelain, Glass, artwork, furniture and jewelry that I inherited from my grandparents years ago. They were antique dealers. I have tried researching everything on my own without much luck in determining what things were and what their value is. After watching a few of your videos for the first time tonight, I’ve learned more then I have in the past 20 yrs. Thank you for what you do! Ps: I live in Lion country…..Go Penn State!!!!!

I absolutely love your attitude and that Italian in your face responses. My dad was a 1st generation Italian American, his parents came from Italy through Ellis Island. The funny thing is that he was married 3 times, and my mom was straight up hillbilly Irish from West Virginia, but my twin sister and I were adopted when they were 49 and 50. We probably have more than enough of the Italian attitude, but technically we are Swedish, German, and Native American. What a mix eh? My dad even tried to arrange marriages for my sister and I to good Italian men, I guess that was a thing back when he was young. He was born in 1921, and my mom 1922, I was lucky enough to have my dad until he was 87, and he passed away peacefully at home with our family that he loved to be in the middle of the crazyness, and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He lived long enough to see 5 grandchildren and another 4 great grandchildren. Unfortunately, my mom was diagnosed with dementia/alzheimers when we were in our early 20's, she was always kinda different and had crazy mood swings. I took care of her until I was about 33, but it was getting too dangerous to keep her at home, she would try to drink dish soap and eat things that she shouldn't, walking out of the house was a problem. I used to sleep in front of the bedroom door to make sure that she didn't walk away at night. She passed away 3 years before my dad. I'm almost 49 now and have no idea of where all the time went. Love your videos, Blessings! FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE!

I can't believe how much knowledge you have it's amazing and another thing I can't believe how anybody would want to challenge you when they have no iota.
The more videos I watch the more I can see how educated you are in your field. And I noticed sometimes people expect a very high price and if they don't get what they imagined then they get angry if you know what I mean. You're very honest and you say it how it is. When you appraised some of my things I was surprised that what I thought wasn't valuable was valuable. And vice versa. You sure been around the block when it comes to going to different countries and appraising items. I wish I had known you years ago when I got rid of my mother's belongings I never kept anything. There was so many antiques and coins as well as handmade ginseng carpets and handmade wool carpets from India. She had that lamp shades made from onion skin.
And I was only 17 and I just told the transport truck to come and pick everything up and I auctioned it off a three bedroom house full of antiques and I only got $2,000. She had the red rose and the yellow rose complete set of Royal Albert and I mean with everything. teapots gravy dish salt and pepper shaker you name it she had it. She had beautiful pearl necklaces black pearls white pearls because they were her favourite. She had fur coats that were already antique or vintage from the 30s 40s 50s. She had movie stars pictures that were signed. Beautiful solid antique brass bed. And she collected antique Chinese porcelain. And old books with the onion skin on the inside and she turn the pages. Yes I remember all of this and I look back and I say if I only knew then what I know now. A person should put things away in storage and wait a year before they do anything after a family member dies especially when you're young because when you're young you are not thinking clearly and I did not have any advocate I just had me and my father. Death is not a normal thing.. we were created to live forever and when death hits us it's hard for us to deal with it and we make the wrong decisions and I think I remember you saying in one of your videos that the young people should think before they sell their parents or their grand parents antiques. Because you just never know what could be in those boxes. I recently found three canning jars full of old pennies from Value Village and they looking pretty good shape even though they are from the 50s 60s and 70s. What I conclude is that perhaps Grandpa would throw pennies into the jar and collect them and he might have died and the kids probably saw it as just valuable s pennies. And in Canada here we don't use pennies anymore. But I collect coins because certain ones can be very valuable. As you know Yes your videos are very educational and beneficial. And like I say you speak the truth and I value your appraisal. Have a good day Lori and hello from Canada again and keep safe we haven't reached the second wave with this Coronavirus. It's crazy but it is one sign of the times that we're living in goodbye

Some beautiful pieces revealed. The matter of the kids not wanting certain things that I know to be of value - we are having that issue at our house and I just want to shake some sense into my daughter. She likes "MODERN". Yet, there are family furniture pieces that are antique that really need to be passed on. My sister has her tongue hanging out wanting them, and most likely she will get them one day and then go to her daughters. The kids are really impossible for the parents to deal with when it comes to that stuff (and other stuff too of ocurse).

@@DrLoriV , I have this old dark oak server that my grandfather finished for my grandmother. It was first passed down to my aunt. Her hubby put a can of paint on it and it left a red ring on the top. My mother hid the spot with a dresser scarf, and I planned to crochet a doily scarf to cover it. I consider the red ring a memory too, so I will never remove it. It's sad but my grandfather refinished a dining room table and chairs to match. He worked hard on them. My mother was angry one night and broke almost all the chairs. (That was after I left home. My sister told me about it.) I have the table and a picture of me standing on it with my grandfather holding me and assuring me that he would never let me fall. I actually remember that and what he said to me. It was a great picture of my grandfather and me.

You are right. Years back before the dumps were given over to trash companies. We could go dump our stuff pick up other stuff that people left and go home. Got a complete set of dishes that way. Just left there. Of course back then you did not just throw stuff like that out. You took it and carefully left it because we all knew how the system worked. Hopefully will send pic for appraisal. Sad. Out dumps would not be so full now if we went beck to the old way. In my opinion.

Ii know you are probably joking, but that is what a lot of people think. So they start thinking their stuff is worthless. Someone comes buy, sees that in fact it's valuable and they want to buy it. They let you keep thinking you have "crap" so they can get a good bargain for themselves. Then, years later, after I appraise a similar piece at an event or on a video and you see it, you realize that you didn't have "crap".

Thank you to your audience member, Michelle, for mentioning how hard it is to tell the difference between the old stuff and the new. It seems like it gets harder as companies learn to put better quality back into the more modern pieces. And, there were so many great pointers in this video about deciphering quality: bone China Vs. porcelain, whiter clay being the better quality, marks on the bottom not always being an indication of value, etc. Great tutorial video.
