It’s frustrating that gats isn’t keen on Rhys carre, he’s been smashing it at Saracens. Even if he came off the bench I reckon he would be a difference maker
I can't put it into enough words to describe how frustrated I am by Gatland not including Llewelyn (premierships top try scorer) and Evans (arguably most in form fly half in the division). How do the WRU (or Gatland in that fact) expect us to support them when they dont pick our best players?
@lewisthemadman2263 yeah it's a clause in his contract. But this rule is baffling. As will griff John signed for sale ages ago, has 2 caps, but he's eligible. So the rule if you can ca it that applies to people he doesn't want to pick lol
Jarrod Evans is available for Wales, he wasn’t offered a contract when he left so he’s not captured by the 25 cap rule. Max Llewelllyn not included is crazy, I think this is Gats last six nations. For me the big game we must win is against England, that’s what the fans want but I just can’t see it
Tomos Williams as one of only a few Welshmen will be pushing for that 3rd #9 spot in the B&I Lions Squad. No Max Llewelyn (plays 13 & 14), Olly Cracknell & Jarrod Evans is a bit of a shocker!
Evans can’t play as he doesn’t meet the cap rule… plus Edward’s is better and there are better players than Crancknell (Morris for example… who wasn’t picked either)
@ oh didn’t know he had a clause? How exactly does that work then because that cap rule is getting so confusing now 😭 I’d argue that maybe Callum Sheedy Will Reed, Ioan Lloyd are a bit better tho tbh… but would still like to have him for depth.
Hey mate good assessment fair play pretty much agree with everything. I really rate Dan Edwards he's been class for the ospreys. I actually think he may as well start with him now because I think Thomas is our best 12 and he's the only specialist 10.
Hope Dan Edwards get a chance - I'm not a Costelow hater by any means but his recent form has been poor - know he's injured but regarldess, glad someone else is getting a go and that it's not Anscombe.
Wales are the most likely to get the wooden spoon but you never know! Gats has definitely rolled the dice and their destiny will be clearer after the Italy game, hard to see any team overhauling France at home
Excited to see Edwards for sure, feels a bit of a patchwork of a squad and not sure what Gatland is aiming for. Feels odd to have said he’s been picking the youngsters to build a future team but then suddenly drop so many out completely. It’s not looking like a happy camp, will find out soon enough. Great to have the 6 nations coming up 😊
Hopefully dan edwards goes well. Gats not bringing a more experienced 10 to back him up means if he has a bad day (or picks up an injury), their only option is to throw ben thomas into his second poaition and hope for the best. Lot of pressure to put on a young 10.
Players not selected: Rhys Carre (still), Rio Dyer, Taine Basham, Taine Pulmtree, Ioan Lloyd, Aled Davis, Max Llewellyn, Cameron Winnett, Gareth Anscombe, Sam Costelow, Reuben Morgan Williams, Freddie Clarke, and probs more I have forgotten.
I believe this bloke will NEVER get sacked by Wales, regardless of ongoing results. The only way he'll leave the job is when he decides to. Weird - but that's the situation, imho.
Yes a few changes to the squad, as you said Gats was contradictory. Dropping Ascomb and bringing in Leigh Williams. Like you I was surprised especially by Winnet he was one of our best players of the autumn. As for the rest of the squad I understand the selections. We won't beat France so we have to beat Italy.
Have to agree with all the omissions as there is a clear rationale for them and data and information we/you don’t have access to. Also the blend he is looking to play across the 6N and into the future. Would personally like to see Carre on the bench especially against the French as we don’t have a massive unit to match the French forwards especially in the last 30/20 minutes.
Gatland doesnt have a plan, he is just cruising to retirement with an easy paycheck. He will be gone after another 5 losses in this Six Nations. Also Jarrod Evans is eligible as he wasnt offered a contract to stay in Wales.
@@Welshman647 It wasnt a fair contract, was near half his wage and wru said as it was an unfair contract he is available, its already been confirmed. Gatland just doesnt like him.
I've NEVER seen such a vanilla Wales squad. Why is Gatland failing to sweet talk the dual qualified players like K. Tuiplotu, Wimbush or Lockett. He's on a kings ransom and just going through the motions. HNY MARK!
Win 3 games, 4 if the stars align. Either way, I suspect the WRU will revert to type and get fed up of Gats (especially if he only racks up 2 wins - which would be a MASSIVE improvement on last year, by the way). I like the look of the Welsh set up / the 'feel' of where we are slowly going. Some of the youngsters are slowly getting really well established (Costello, Dyer, Tompkins, Lake). I also suspect our star is starting to rise again, just as some others are starting to fade, so maybe some 'upsets' there (I'm eyeing the Ireland game). Me - stick with Gats through thick and thin. WRU?..... let's see (I've got my opinion on what they'll do).
I think the reason why Liam Williams and Faletau are in but Anscombe will be their experience. Wales has a big problem with not having a quality 10. So it makes sense to try some new players. Dan Edwards and the other 10s will be able to play a bit more freely knowing they've got the security of Liam Williams behind and Faletau up front. And although it doesn't build towards a world Cup, what matters is results now, and we have been drastically missing experience in our team to settle nerves. I think Gatland will be looking to use the older guys to allow the younger guys time to learn and then he'll probably pull the older guys out at the end of the next six nations. If he's still coach that is
Dan Edwards is looking great for the Ospreys, his temperament reminds me of Dan Biggar at that age. I think he will be a stalwart for Wales in the future, but taking him as the only recognised 10 is madness IMHO. Eddie Jones tried going to the World Cup with one young 10 and when it went wrong, he had nowhere to go. Frankly, from an Ospreys point of view I would have preferred that Dan miss this Six Nations completely and come in for the Japan tour. Still, he's in there, and in a way there's no weight of expectation. Hopefully, even if the results aren't pretty, he'll come out of it feeling good.
I think this squad has some good points and some negatives. Skipping the top try scorer in the premiership feels daft. Our biggest issue last year was high impact gain line and I don’t see any of our centres as really providing that currently. Compare it with the centres from other teams and it just feels light but Gats will have a plan I’m sure. Bringing back the experience of Faletau and Williams feels wise. I reckon we could see a back row of Wainright and Morgan on the flanks with Faletau at 8. It’s very dynamic with lots of turnover threat. Reffell to come off the bench and have high impact.
Llewelyn a mystery. I would have expected 10 - 12 - 13 Edwards, Ben Thomas, Llewelyn, to give us a chance of getting over the gain line, now that Mason Grady is injured. Front row still a big problem. We’re gonna get shunted by the French 1st game, and it’s all downhill from there
I know the issues are bigger than Gats selections and injuries, but not sure if he's got this. Wondering out loud, is this a bigger squad, body size wise? Heavier?
Great content, as always! I need some advice: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (mistake turkey blossom warfare blade until bachelor fall squeeze today flee guitar). How can I transfer them to Binance?
Is there a maximum squad size limit for the 6 nations? Wales named 34, Sais named 36, Italy I believe 30? Can you add players at any point? World Cup has a squad limit and you can only replace if a player is injured. Is there rule squad size replacement and split forwards and backs?
We despairingly need some good no 10's. I still thinking we should be backing Gareth Anscombe, he's the best we have at the moment . Great experience. Also , he can pass on his experience with the younger no 10's.
Italian teams have been off the boil. Getting more than one scalp from the remaining four is a big ask, but the beauty of the 6 Nations is that you can't predict who'll be the most awful on the day!
I think Wales Rugby needs to get their act together, and pretty quickly. It's not that long ago when all the Welsh "Talking Heads" were pushing the idea of Promotion and Relegation from the Six Nations (for some reason, despite the horrible form of their U20s teams, they never believed that it would be themselves facing a drop). Seriously though, Georgia are certainly pushing for inclusion in the Six Nations - in some form AND you also have the South Africa problem. Personally, I think that as South Africa is clearly NOT in Europe nor in the Northern Hemisphere, neither their Club nor International teams should have anything to do with Northern Hemisphere Rugby, but that ship has sailed and, sooner or later, there's going to be a major push to get South Africa in some form of the Six Nations. That means that we now have EIGHT International teams wanting inclusion in the Six Nations - and there is no way either the English Premiership nor the French Top Fourteen is going to countenance a full expansion of the Six Nations... So, the only real option is a Two Tier competition - and as things stand, Wales are nowhere near the Top tier of ANYONE's Rugby... The only thing in doubt, as I see it is how long Wales have to recover from their current abysmal run of form, or how much Welsh fans would enjoy away trips to Berlin or Lisbon?...
That team is a good mix of youth and experience and will win a game for sure. Honestly, unlike other ppl, I rlly like this squad tbh. I hope we get smashed so the Wru can find the balls to sack him, howley, king and humphries. And Jenkins who's been there forever like a bad smell
