Anyone that does a build on these units should always install a Sonnax lube regulated pressure regulator valve, the honda's love to eat converters (4 and 5 speed units). The 5 speeds also like to wear out the sprag and race as well (no forward in Drive cold, but moves in d3,d2,1). The pressure switches should also be replaced and Raybestos GPX frictions are the best clutches to be used. Cleanliness is paramount
@cb7crazy It's got over 3k on it now and it works great. Heard a noise but it was the bearing in the PS pump. I just rebuilt the pump today, but my phone had the audio checked to OFF, so there's no audio. Honda PS pumps are super simple to rebuild, and can be done from start to finish in under an hour. :)
have done a th350 on a chevy van and in the end turned out to be better than any of the last 2 rebuild this old van had. owned since new. and had 4 rebuilds. I was much younger and fearless then, but my point is a rebuilder will only replace what they consider is within specs. That in my opinion means if the frictions and steels are "OK" then they will leave them and just replace all the rubbers which is typically what is the issue. The heat hardens the rubber and reduces its resiliency causing leakage on the servo pistons applying the clutches. Heat is the enemy and a cooler is recommended but reduces fuel economy somewhat because of the reduction in thinning of the fluid. Thin oil is one of the holy grails of efficiency's thus LV and synthetic oil's (recommended) if you have a garage and time and the fearlessness to tackle this you will have a 99% success rate. Need manual need patience need the correct tools or the ability to think outside the box to improvise. don't be in a hurry index mark any area that you think may have to go in a certain way keep notes, Pictures. No distractions so once you start keep going until done to the point of completion. Dirt is the enemy or at least one demon. Odyessys's eat converters and bearings so be careful and heed on the side of caution if questionable. Again Heat and dirt are enemy's. there are filter kits that be added to the cooler lines too. My 2.5 cents Good luck.
Don't forget to put new pressure regulator valve and tcc release valve and sleeve they are available from sonnax it stops premature tcc burn up due to release issues
The ATSG print out that came with the kit had the same diagrams as the FSM. Trans is working great. I went with the Amsoil Synthetic ATF. I was freaking out yesterday as there was a noise like a bearing going bad, and it was on the PS pump. So I did a quick rebuild on it. The total cost of this rebuild was 175 for the kit with steels (don't skimp). I got all my parts from CT power train in Huntington Beach. Oh, a JY MDWA Trans was $800ish with no gurantees.
The only "special" tools I used was a puller with some really long 6mm bolts to pull the gears under the end cover. I grabbed the bolts from an old civic starter, about 6" long. As for the press I already have an Hein Werner 20T, so it was easy for me to just use it. You could take your clutch drums to a local machine shop or transmission shop and have them replace the piston seals or the pistons depending on what type of drum you have.
Nice Vid, I've been rebuilding for about 6 years and the most common issue that i've ran across with the honda units failing is that the nuts on the shafts loosen up and cause you to have issues in 2nd and reverse, so if you do decide to tackle one of these urself I would suggest replacing the nuts on the shafts new and torqueing them to the correct spec. Also check the bodies where your shafts sit and make sure there is no wear from the sealing rings, the 1-2 acc. body is cheap from dealership
@db587 Yes, get a rebuild kit. You can flush the torque convertor, or a reman is about $150. You kinda need a press to take the clutch drums apart. They make a tool for it too, or you can make a tool with all thread and a socket.
@KASTAS155 This is a Honda, it's a contstant mesh like a manual. But instead of shift forks, it uses clutch packs to select each gear. Not that scary, but have a manual which shows you how the gear clusters go back together.
@cb7crazy Diff bearings were fine with the shim that was in the case. I did have to replace one of the shims on the stack that had 2nd gear. Be warned it takes 1-2 weeks to get parts for these things. I used the dial indicator to check the clutch pack free play. You put the clutch/steels in drum, put the snap ring in, then check the free movement of the clutch stack, there's specs for each clutch pack in the manual and on the ATSG paperwork that comes with the rebuild kit.
Excellent video! Reverse quit out on my son's 1992 Accord. The transmission is a 4 spd auto, model APX4. I bought a rebuild kit, new filter, reman torque converter, 7 qts of Honda fluid then went to it. I found no broken O-rings, no metal shavings or any signs of damage. I throughly disassembled and cleaned every last part then reassembled and torqued per the Honda serve manual. She now shifts great in all fwd gears but still no reverse. Anyone have any idea what I missed?
There is a chart that shows which solenoids are energized, I'd check them, sounds like you have a bad solenoid. The sucky part is you could've swapped it without pulling the car apart.
BTW, I have changed the fluid now twice, cleaned off the drain plug each time with little improvement (there was alot of fine metal on the plug each time I cleaned it. Car sat for a few hours, went back and, sure enough, it went into gear solidly. Sounds like there is ALOT of crap in this tranny!
@db587 Probably. That's why I tend to avoid JY transmissions, they're an unknown. I've done an insane amount of the L3's and S20 civic transmissions. My 91 Si has a hybrid HF 5th gear + LSD L3 in it. :)
Hi Mark. Thanks for the vid. I have a 1991 Honda Accord. I put a junk yard tranny in it cause reverse was blown in the old one. BUT, I screwed up and didnt flush the tranny. SO, it went a little more than 1500 miles and now it works for about 30 secs and then "let's go" in all gears. Is this the torque converter screwing up? ANyhow, I have been told in a couple of Honda forums that debri (metal, etc.) is getting sucked up into the filter and cutting off hydraulic pressure. Rebuild time?
I am prepared to rebuild my auto trans off an 06 Sentra. I have already taken it apart. The service manual is DEFINITELY something even an expert can't be without! My trans stopped engaging to gear after an accidental "neutral drop". So I took a look inside the trans and did not find anything obvious with the mechanical parts. But I was suspicious with the valve body assembly. One valve just fell off upon removal of valve body. I AM YET TO FIND OUT WHERE I CAN GET A REBUILD KIT! GOOGLED, NO LUCK
Great video I just bought 2003 acura cl type s Has shifting problem in 2nd and 3rd gear I wonder if I have to do the same clutches change or maybe linear solenoids Please advise Thx
just installed new transmission in 2000 Honda it won't start. Its getting fire to the switch just not from it. hook up the battery and the lights, radio etc comes on without the key in the switch. Cant pull it out of gear to even try to see if it would start in another gear either. any help is needed! thanks
Hi All, My situation that the bear and race of the diff. worn out and I had to open and replace them bearings. When I reassembled the tranny and install back into the van. I put fluids. The van is jacked up. I test it and the reserve will not turn the wheel but i can feel the drag. I try to speed up to see if the wheel turn but it shut down the engine. Does anyone know this problem. This is my first time doing this so kinda lost. Please help. Thanks.
Hi, I got problem with my M6HA tranny. When my gearbox is really cold and when the outside temperature is low gear shifting is sharp and very slow. Sometimes on gear change rpms increase but without gear change. Then suddenly gear is shifted but these gear change is uncomfortable. But when gearbox get temperature gear shifting is smooth and pretty cool. I changed the 3L of transmission oil and refilled by OEM HONDA ATF Z1 oil. I cleaned all solenoid valves which are on gearbox shell. No results. I'm going to next oil change but I'd like to drain and refill my gearbox new edition of ATF Honda oil, the ATF-DW1 which is as I read full syntetic oil for Honda A/T and it work better in low temperatures. Am I right?

thank you for this nice video. how much times it takes you to take the transmission off and put it back on. I'm trying to find out the labor cost.

Did you run through the valve body?????????? Take it apart and polish the bores?
Thanks for the video, Mark!
How much does the honda ody transmission weigh? Want to see what it will take to get it in and out. Thanks!

Hey Mark, great video. Would have loved to seen the whole rebuild but this was very insightful. A lot of good advice.

Can you tell me the exact manual you used? Helm's website is not the most friendly to find specific items.
Do you have any of the footage of the transmission removal from the van?
Pretty good explanation it seems. Would be nice if he would reply to the questions.
Great video
I just bought 2003 acura cl type s
Has shifting problem in 2nd and 3rd gear I wonder if I have to do the same clutches change or maybe linear solenoids
Please advise
Thx
In what condition did you find the control valves and their bores? Did you do any polishing, etc? You didn't talk much about the valve body.
like others I am wondering how you cleaned the parts without a hot jet or solution bath?
When you installed 3rd gear onto the clutch drum did your 3rd gear have play while assemble on the mainshaft
How's the trans doing, still working? I've got to rebuild my 03 acura MDX "MDKA" trans. How much did that kit cost you?
its a amazing video, i have a 98 accord trasmission BAXA, its the same like you, and i fixed .
just installed new transmission in 2000 Honda it won't start. Its getting fire to the switch just not from it. hook up the battery and the lights, radio etc comes on without the key in the switch. Cant pull it out of gear to even try to see if it would start in another gear either.

What you use for cleaning the transmission
Can you tell me which Helm book you got that gave you the details for the rebuild?
you buy the one for the year and model of the vehicle

it works better yea but it sounds like yours has the same issue as this one. burned clutch packs and clogged filter
i have a 2001 Honda odyssey everything is good but I doesn't grab the reverse gear... does anyone have any ideas they could give me
why wouldnt you check the solenoids before you tore it apart?
hondamagnaperformanc
Feel like helping me do the same on a 2001 Honda Accord 5 Spd?
Please send me a message as its going out now, and I am in Irvine
Great video release. Nice work.
I wish lol. mine only has reverse. and no codes. mine is a1996 odyssey.
Did you put it on a dyno?
why? it's a transmission
Good teaching, nice work!
Nice nice video.Buddy
de que modelo es la transmision?
put a used transmission in 400 bucks
if youre a dumbass
