    I've never been very good at sharpening. Too in a hurry. After watching "how too" videos for this device, I bought two, one in the house, one in the garage. Beautiful sharp edge on first try! Wow! From incompetent to expert just like that! I've now sharpened everything in sight. This thing is great!

    The whole "move the stone, not the knife" technique is also how the boy scouts (and Ray Mears) teach you to whittle with a knife. Keep your knife arm static, brace it against your knee if you're seated/kneeling and pull the stick into the blade. If I ever end up buying this system that would feel almost natural to me from my time in scouts.

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  3 года назад +3

      Exactly!! And once you get the motion down its very easy, and when i keep it kind of close to my vision i can see all the edge movements to adjust accordingly

    • @BassMaster.454

      I guess that seems logical. In my boy scouts I remember we made animals out of soap and eventually basswood.

    Just got one of these. I already had a guided system with a clamp, rods, and 5 stones, and despite that I'll be using the worksharp field sharpener to sharpen my knives from now on. I was able to take knives from too dull to cut paper, to shaving sharp in a few minutes each, and with almost no practice. I struggled with the decision for a while, because I already have a sharpening system, and several other sharpening tools and methods. I'm really glad I got one though, because none of them work as well and as fast as this. The rod/guide system will put a cleaner, factory-like edge on knives, but I have to set up rods, clamp the knife, oil the stones, etc. This may not get the perfect factory-like scratch pattern, but it will get a knife just as sharp, if not sharper, and it will do it in under 2 minutes. The guides will make it quicker, but the 25° ceramic guide will give you a secondary bevel. If you have the angle control, you don't have to use them, and I recommend setting your own angle to get better results.
    I strongly recommend this sharpener to anyone who has difficulty getting knives really sharp, or just wants to be able to sharpen a knife very well and very quickly while on the go.

I've really started to like free hand now that I'm getting much better at it. I do have a cheap set of bench stones, but I much prefer to do hand held. I'm better at it that way too, I guess because I've done it that way more.

    It can be seen in the first 0:30 that this tool relies on manually maintaining the correct angle on the edge while sharpening. This may work tor people who spend a lot of time sharpening knives, and will be able to maintain the required skill set. As a home cook, I will stick with the Lansky system, which maintains the correct edge angle automatically, and which I have used successfully for years.

    So when I sharpen, do I use all four sides?
    When I strop on the leather, if there are pieces of stone, this will scratch my knives while I strop?

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  3 года назад

      You can use both diamonds then strop in that case no worries on stropping, if you do go all the way through then you can still strop but if you dont take your plates off and clean them then you will get grt in your strop that could lead to scratches, but thats more for mirror edges thats done on other systems, so if you have a fresh polished edge from a kme, you might not want to use this strop after its been used a lot, but when your out in the field using your knife its the least of your worries

    It's odd. You know when you hear someone's voice for years? Maybe a radio DJ (kids; Google them if you're unaware of this term), and you finally see them and they look nothing like you pictured? I probably watched a couple dozen of these videos before ever seeing more than just hands, it was the same thing when I here.
    I expected fatter. Of course that's usually what I picture with knife guys. Though I'm not fat.

    I couldn't not disagree with the other reviewers here more. Very frustrating and disappointing product. I started off with a blunt hunting knife and despite following the tutorials to the letter for over and hour - I still had a blunt hunting knife. Avoid this product.

      Sounds like user error. Lol
      I took a rusted knife I found in a tool box that had chipped edges, cleaned it up, put a new edge on it with the 300 grit and within 30min of using this product I had an edge that went from dull as a butter knife to shaving. I'm sure I can make it sharper if I spent more time working with it and getting more aquatinted with using this tool.

      I've recently purchased this and have restored an edge with multiple chips to nearly razor sharp on my first attempt. This is a very good sharpener for the price point.

      I think it depends on the steel angle and knife. I have some knifes that I can get wicked sharp with this sharpener. I have a bushcraft knife that is very difficult to sharpen. The only way I can get it sharp is on another sharpening system and then I switch over to a very fine diamond stone to finish. I can touch it up with this however not nearly hair popping sharp like I can get with my other method. If you are still ending up with a blunt knife try giving it a steaper angle I've had success with that. But some sharpening systems are not for you like I cannot sharpen for the life of me on whetstones. Im pretty sure I'm keeping the same angle I've even used guides I've given up and found systems that work for me. But don't get discouraged with one system if you cannot get one knife sharp.

      This sounds like a you problem. I use this thing constantly, and it's easily one of the best sharpeners I've had.

    I have been sharpening my knives for several years now, and own Arkansas stone, diamond stones of different sizes, and this worksharp system in this video. For the life of me I cannot ever get an edge anywhere near as sharp as these people in youtube on any of my knives. I just don't get it. Maybe I'm just retarded? So many instructional videos say Oh maybe 10 strokes on a side... Oh don't use too much pressure.. bullshit, that never puts a bur on the edge!
