Can Mamoru Hosoda's Belle Win An Oscar? No, But It's Worth A Shot

  • Belle is a weird case among Hosoda films. Rather than just being made by the sort of people he’s spent the last decade of his career working with, there’s plenty of new faces as well from overseas. And to bring up the Oscars once again, these include an Oscar Award-winning character designer and Oscar-nominated animation studio.

I think it's possible. Even though I don't think it'll be regarded as his best, I think Belle stands a particularly great chance because of the musical aspect of the movie, which I think always gets bonus points and makes for a more instantly nostalgic and timeless sort of reaction.

Only anime that got a winning was Miyazaki's Spirited Away. Makoto Shinkai and Hosoda continue to blow away audiences with thrilling stories and their art, but it's almost as if Disney always takes that animated award even with a lower bar of their script.

Speaking as an American, The Oscars are honestly just a joke at this point. Ego driven movie makers and "woke" producers self aggrandizing themselves. Since Mamoru is not part of their inner circles, and the film has no minorities or gender politics, I can honestly say they likely won't pay that much attention to 'Belle', if any at all. But, this film doesn't need them.~ Its beautiful to watch, and the music is down right heavenly. It doesn't need validation from a joke like The Oscars. Its just needs us all to keep listening and passing the word.

Given that Belle has the same international sales agent (Charades) as Mirai, I’m sure they will select a North American distributor such as GKIDS (which released Mirai in the USA) that will be able to qualify and campaign for the film during awards season. Sure, a Oscar win is a long shot even with 2021’s shortened awards season, but a nomination is still a honor. It’s definitely a contender for several Annie Awards nominations next year (including Best Animated Feature - Independent, which Mirai won).

Trick question outside of Spirited Away, anime does not win Oscars. Encanto probably going to win this year and it wouldn't matter if Josee, The Tiger, and the Fish were nominated.

I don't really care if it wins an Oscar or not. What matters is if the film will be any good. After Boy and the Beast and Mirai, I'm very skeptical. Hosoda is a great director but needs a good collaborative writer to get his ideas across.

Whoa, I had no clue that his team was basically a who's-who of my favorite animation studios. That's insanely exciting.
Academy voters have admitted in the past to not even really watching the "Best Animated" screeners. They've said they either "vote for whatever my kid seemed to like", "just vote for whatever Disney made", or "I don't vote for those". It's infuriating. Honestly, I think the Oscars have lost all credibility in that department.

I mean it won't, because I can count on one hand the winners that weren't associated with Disney (heck, Spirited Away, the ONE anime that has one, was still distributed by Disney iirc), but hey, it'll still let other people know about it.

If the oscars payed attention to what comes out of Japan Disney would never win a best animated picture again. And at the very least the would be recognized as serious competition.

Why would you say this movie cannot win an oscar?
Are you saying its because its not good enough?
That it is not at the level of something pixar would make?
Well that is just very unfair, and you are very wrong, because this movie is far more beautiful than something as soul-less as Coco or Soul.
Of course in therms of sheer quality it can top any of this years competitors.
But since the academy holds no true value for artistic integrity, as they have proven many times past, whatever it is that they name as "the best" of the year should not be taken for granted. So then i guess you are right; this movie cant win an oscar.
And it does not need to so that we know its one of the best animated films of the year.

    • @OTAQUESTJP

I'm saying it probably won't win an Oscar because the Oscars are all about recognition, not actual quality. Otherwise, anime would have won plenty of awards. And as you say, it doesn't really need to win for us to know it'll be great.

I was hoping you to win by the 2022 Oscars, just to let you know that the Oscars are complete hypocrites, selfish, pathetic and scum-of-the-earth disgraceful, pile of garbage, a complete out-of-touch.
Just realized imaginative oscar voters are ages 60 to 86 year old white people, which is they do not pay attention to any of these movies we watch, this is how the Oscars felt, they don't really seem to care about any of these anime films that we watch.
