Fabricating a receiver hitch for your holiday trailer or RV

  • If you are thinking of putting a receiver hitch on your trailer, check out what I build first. Even if you are just hauling a couple of bikes, the receiver needs to be properly supported or your bumper may fail and break off. The bumpers on most RV units are not built to take a certain load. It does not take much to do it right.

Great idea for the 90 , you're right about those magnets. We here in Minnesota can pull a boat behind a trailer. I think that this was a great fix for a future problem Stevo, Thumbs up 👍

I've seen a couple horror stories with these bumpers so I always talk the friends into an upgrade. Doesn't take much. Thanks Stevo

I guess i have to build myself a 90 Degree clamp. You did a great job welding in the dark.

That is a good project, harder than you think. Every time you touch your metal with the welder, it goes out of square. Thanks Bruce

I've seen too many bumper fails. It doesn't take much to do it right. It will save you from dragging your kids bikes down the highway an ruining the camp trip. Stevo

You have a good design on that and it is removable

Had to explain the benefits of having it removable to the owner. It only makes sense. Thanks Stevo

Great job! Did you have room for the spare tire rack as well?

On my trailer bumper, not this one, I did a custom wheel mount but I think we just did the bolt on bracket for this one. I have done a few bumpers now for these trailer, should go into business. Thanks. Stevo

Hey very good video! What thickness did you use for the 2x2 tubing? Would 1/8” be thick enough to make one like this strictly for a bike rack? Could a person get away with using 1.5” tubing as well?

1/8 would probably work out okay, still thicker than the original bumper. I would shy away from the 1 1/2, too much flex. You get those bikes bouncing, there is a lot of force. Thanks for tuning in. Stevo

Hi Stevo .Im passing through Alberta ...I have a Grand Design with heavy hitch in place . I need to beef up the welds to pull a trailer..... strengthen the rails .
Would you be interested....or can recommend someone qualified:) in Alberta

Unfortunate I am on a painting project a can not do any welding right now. Any welding shop should be able to handle that. Any small town welder should be able to get er done right away. Thanks you for considering me. Stevo

What size bolts you used for the frame?

    • @stevoj8959
      @stevoj8959  Год назад

I used 1/2 inch bolts that were grade 8. Should do the trick if you are using more than two bolts. if you are just using 2 bolts for each side, might want to bump that up to 5/8. Thanks. Stevo

What do you charge for something like that?

I have done a couple and they run around $350, depends on the mounting. Thanks. Stevo
