Before You Buy an eBike Rack for your Travel Trailer: Watch This!

  • We recently purchased two heavy eBikes and we love riding them. We faced a surprising challenge of finding a suitable method to carry them with our travel trailer during camping trips. We discovered that most "RV-rated" bike racks on the market have inadequate weight restrictions or are not recommended for use on a travel trailer. After extensive searching, we found a solution that involved installing a hitch receiver (link below) directly welded onto the frame of the trailer, which would not place any weight on the tube-style bumper. This hitch receiver could then support a heavy-duty bike rack that was specifically approved for use on a travel trailer and had a high weight capacity. The video showcases the installation process of the hitch receiver in the first part of a two-part series. The second part (find it in the playlist) focuses on the assembly and testing of the bike rack. If you're an RV owner who wants to take your bikes on your travels, this video series could be an insightful and helpful guide. Don't forget to check out part two of the series in the playlist!

Would you tell me where you get the hitch receiver? I plan on doing the same hitch on my 5th wheel.
    Thank you.

Backing into anything is less of an ‘issue’ for the trailer now. 😂 bonus!
    Great Vid !

Yes, it's nice to have some extra cushion back there! But seriously, I'll never have another travel trailer without the rear facing camera. It takes all the worry out of backing up, and I can always see what's behind us while going down the road.

Thanks so much for making this! funny, that I was searching for information. I also have Himiway bikes. I am about to buy a trailer and was looking between the Surveyor Legend (which you also have there) but the model with bunks (surveyor legend 19mdble). But the new 2024's come with a hitch installed from the factory. But . . . I HATE the new color patterns inside! So I am also looking at the No Boundries 19.8. But . . . they don't come with the hitch! (Frustrating). I'm not good with welding so I guess I need to fins someplace that can do it. Also, unfortunately, I recently bought the Hollywood e-Bike rack (spend over $500 on it!) but it won't work on the trailer (as you stated in your video). but this is a big deal if you want to bring the e-bikes along (which I for sure do). thanks - Dave

We were shocked at how difficult it was to find a good, safe way to carry the eBikes. I'm sorry to hear you have already spent some money on stuff that isn't rated for the task. Now that you know it is doable, I hope you find (and outfit) a travel trailer model that you and your family just love. The extra effort is worth it!

Have you cracked your frame yet. We have a 2029 Lance 2375 with a factory installed hitch. It's bolted directly to the frame, not the bumper. We're ently got bikes and tried carrying them. We cracked the frame behind the rear axle mounts. Good luck.

Question I have is what is the weighting rating for the trailer frame holding the bumper? The two bars extended beyond the bottom of the trailer look like heavy duty, but just not sure. Our ebikes weight 60lbs each with battery, so 120 plus rack. The problem occurs when the trailer bounces. Hope your rear facing camera has a view if the ebikes while you travel.

That certainly is the big question. The manufacturer of this particular trailer doesn't provide any specs to help answer it. The only reason I was confident to try this is that the current model year of the same make and model of trailer now offers a fold down cargo rack, which is apparently attached in the same manner, and which has a weight rating exceeding the total added load of my modifications. The rear facing camera does offer a perfect view of the bikes, greatly reducing the stress level while on the road! The first 7 hour trip went well, but I'll be inspecting the welds frequently. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching.
