I think this song represents Betty's journey more than Simon's, after all, his tragedy came from an accident, while her was trough continuous sacrifice.
As Betty herself said, she made her life so much about Simon, that maybe there's no much left of her.
But, after seeing this scene, it really makes you realize that it didn't meant they had a relationship of codependence, but a relationship made of pure passion for each other.
A perfect life cut short by things beyond their control, and the tragedy of trying to stop it.
She truly sacrificed a lot for Simon and as we saw in the second episode he was willing to do the same

I feel like there was still some toxicity and codependence hinted at, like when Fionna asked Simon if he went on the bus, and he replied "No, what, why would I?". Betty gave up everything for Simon, but Simon didn't give up any of his dreams for her. Their love was toxic, and it ruined Betty's life
It's so gorgeous, they are just sitting there looking at each other hard in love for the full minute of the song and its just... lovely. There's no insane animation like Winter wonderland or whacky showmanship like baked with love and yet I just... love this so much more for some reason

Yea it does, because love comes with loss. The love of a family member, pet, or your other half eventually loss will come and that's when the tragedy comes but some wise words I can say is " to grieve deeply is to have loved fully".

My guess is Simon realizes Betty always did what Simon wanted, because she wanted him to be happy, but as much as loved her he never asked what she wanted. He will find her as the chaos god Golb and instead of talking her into leaving godhood and leaving pure Golb to destroy the universe, that he'll agree to stay by her side this time and do what whatever she wants. Be the assistant for her great adventure.

Something that I really like about Simon and Betty's relationship is that it's not perfect. It's very flawed. We even have a whole episode about how Betty would be better off if she left for her trip. As happy as they are together, Simon is somewhat selfish, not thinking about Betty's opportunities. But at the same time, it's not enough for me to root against them. They're both individually charming that I want them to work.

Thing is he didn't even really _mean_ that she should come, it was a compliment mostly. She's the one who said that she had a trip planned but would drop it to go with him, he didn't even know about the trip because how would he?
I don't think Simon is selfish, he very obviously always means well, but when it comes to his relationship with Betty, well... he comes across as a little thoughtless??? I don't think he even realized what Betty was leaving behind just to be by his side.

At first, maybe, but by the time they get to the point where he finds the crown, it's very clear that they would both do anything for the other, especially since his desire to be with betty is the only thing that really sticks as Ice King decends into madness

Watching all the episodes of adventure time, you know that Simon and Betty were in love with each other. However, we never really understood just how much they were until we got a flashback of them just being in love, without all the craziness and magic in between. Seeing Simon and Betty just staring into each others eyes and just taking in this moment which might seem like a minute to us, but an eternity to them, it really adds another layer of sadness when rewatching the show. I am loving this so far, and am honestly looking forward to where this plot is headed.
Damn I just commented the same thing then saw you said exactly how I felt lmao. But yeah, now we actually got to see ourselves how happy they were and how much they genuinely loved each other. Even just seeing Betty light up when talking to Simon for the first time was so sweet.
Honestly, there aren’t many tv shows that can make me shed a tear, and this scene is like top 10. I just really feel for Simon, because he feels like he has nothing to live for anymore. He can’t seem to fit in anywhere, he can’t cope with his trauma of being the ice king, and people keep comparing him to the ice king. Also, the only person in the world that could possibly understand his situation is now an omniscient being in another dimension he can’t reach. I honestly just hope that by the end of the show that he finds a way to cope and be happy. Whether it be with Betty or without her.

Well here he is young my guess late 20s to early 30s betty is probably 21 or 25
Before this episode, I saw Simon’s sadness, but now I feel it. We knew they loved each other, and we’d seen some bits of it, but it was mostly just “he cares about her, therefore we care about her as well” and the same way for Betty about Simon. But now… we actually saw how happy they were and what was lost all because of the crown. It was amazing, but so heartbreaking how much they really loved each other.
Imagine writing a devastating post-apocalypse and deciding to rip EVERYONES hearts out by focusing on the smallest, most gorgeous last bit of humanity before the end of the world. Man.
In a sense, the show Band of Brothers does that.

Having watched the series finale and coming back to this song over and over, I realize something.
This truly is the perfect song for Simon and Betty. Yes, it's a gorgeous love song. It's also the biggest red flag.
The song is literally telling us, before the finale, everything the finale did.
"You and me, we've got something to lose. Boy you've got your dreams, and I've got everything in you."
Simon was free to pursue his goals because of the constant sacrifices from Betty. Her dreams became seeing Simon fulfill his own.
"I'll be there through all the reveries cause I believe in you more than I ever believed in me."
At this point, Betty had already sacrificed for Simon. She put her dreams on hold to follow him to find the Enchiridion and even when they came back, she let him take all the credit. When he met her at the bus stop, she could've left. Instead, she saw Simon's potential as more than her own and gave in.
"And maybe this is killing part of me but it ain't called love without a little tragedy."
This final one hits the deepest to me. Betty knew what she was doing when she went with Simon and she accepted all of it.
Throughout the series, we see several glimpses into Betty's perspective. That she knew what she had done was wrong and she didn't care. In another life, she would change her mind, warn herself, something. In this reality, however, she had made her choices and regretted nothing. She had lived her choices, seen amazing things.
The Fionna and Cake series was such a love letter to fans. It was beautiful. I'm glad the ending gave Betty one final chance to teach Simon something. A lesson she had learned over and over.
Your life is worth living. Not chasing past decisions but truly living. It was the way Betty lived and how Simon should have lived after she was gone. She didn't waste time trying to fix a past mistake. Everything she did in the series was a double-down on her choices, choices made looking forwards. Every choice Simon made was made looking backwards.
Sorry this was so long-winded. This is just my take on the series and the themes within. I hope whatever your take away was that you had fun the same way I did. Much love.

Beautifully put. The part "And maybe this is killing a part of me but it ain't called love without a little tragedy" especially. At first, I was thinking that Betty and Simon's relationship was way too one sided, that Betty was sacrificing too much for Simon's sake, that she should have had her dream career too. But then I realized that she did it for love. It wasn't a waste for not getting her career, it was worth it because she loved him, and she was willing to sacrifice that part of her to have that love with him.

Everyone keeps praising "Winter Wonderworld" and "Baked with Love" and, while I do enjoy those two songs, this, for me, right here is a song I can't help but come back to over and over again. In fact, this whole episode might just be my favorite so far.
I personally never knew I needed a whole episode dedicated to Simon telling how he and Betty first fell in love with each other. But, when this part came up, I was practically in tears for how brilliantly well done it was. It kind of makes it hard to go back to older episodes knowing how things went between the two of them afterward.
Well done, Adventure Time team. Well done

I know out of the two of them, Betty sacraficed a lot more. But even still, you can see that Simon loved Betty so so much. Even after centuries of madness he never forgot her. Its comforting knowing that Simon is able to move forward in life now and be happy, even without his princess.

Only in reincarnation will they be ... "Together Again". I've heard a lot of people theorize that Golbetty is reincarnating at the end of the show, and when Simon died he may have done the same, considering his absence from the Dead Worlds.
Been crying a lot since hearing this.
My ex broke up with me after four years together about five months ago... She never looked back, but I loved her with all my heart and this song just makes me think of all the moments we shared together and the way she used to look at me. As much as I should hate her for leaving and going on dating apps three weeks later, I can't hate her completely. I never contacted her again and it'll stay that way, but I still love and cherish all the moments we shared together. She helped me learn to love myself a little more, something I'll always be grateful for.

The equal compassion they show each other throughout this entire scene is beautiful, they sit there, no words, nothing wacky happening, just pure love in both of their eyes, and its been making me cry every time I've watched this
Words can't describe how much it feels to see how humanly emotional the show's become. I was just a kid when the original series came out and having grown up alongside the show, I really appreciated how human the insane world of Ooo felt. So complex and vibrant with every person that existed in the show, and to finally see the real persons behind Simon and Betty is such an emotional journey. 10+ plus years later and I can see it all, especially as the changed person I am since 10 years ago. I'm very grateful for the impact Adventure Time's storytelling has had on me, and I'm so happy I could get to see this new story unfold. It's so bittersweet.

Honestly, by knowing the tragic ending makes this insanely impactful.
I was in a situation like Simon’s and Betty’s. honestly, it was beautiful where both of us were each other firsts. Awkward, yet passionate. Exploring each other, and going out, talking late nights, etc. I admired them for being independent while living with their parents (something that 17 yr old me was struggling with). I was just weird and unique to him. I supported him when he was choosing which college/university to go to. He did the same. Soon enough as the months went by, I started putting my thoughts and feelings aside just to make him happy, even taking more depression medications than I needed to make sure I had an “extra boost of happiness” for when we were together. Up till last year, my mental health declined badly when I decided to quit on the medications and they just had that “ah okay, cool” reaction. No questioning, no suggestions to seek help. As my mental health declined, I didn’t want to do anything anymore, other than just to make them happy. I would do anything to see them happy. It severely impacted our relationship once my mental health episodes started to affect them too. We split when I was in a psych hospital and I felt my life crumbling around me. Never had I wanted to die more than that day. It was for the best, as I am back on medications and taking therapy, making sure that I use my coping skills when my episodes are bad, and they moved away, pushing though life and “glowing,” which is all I ever wanted to see in them. To see them be happy is all I ever wanted for them, but now I have to focus on myself and making myself happy. It’s a little by little thing everyday. But I’ll never forget the good and the bad and what we’ve both learned from it.
Point is, real life relationships where both people love each other so much to the point of unknowingly hurting each other, is bound to happen. It’s unavoidable for a romance experience. Like the song said “it ain’t called love without a little tragedy”
if only Simon didn’t let his feelings get in the way and didn’t allow Betty to sacrifice so much. Yes, it was just two young and unexperienced lovers but if he realized that going to Australia with her was the better option he most likely wouldn’t have found the crown and they wouldn’t have to go back there when there was a war. He would’ve also still met Marcy if they lived in ooo but they just wouldn’t have a father daughter relationship. Though i don’t know who’d take care of Marcy. Or maybe if Simon didn’t open that portal he could at least spend his last sane years with Betty and Marcy.

I think the lyrics are hinting what the finale's going to be like
Betty and Simon are going to have to face up to the fact that Betty put way more into their relationship than Simon did and sacrificed her dreams for him, and Simon was passive and let her

Just dawned on me, but what if the difference between Simon and Winter King was entirely Betty. Simon felt a connection with Betty when they first met and explored it when he found the note in the library. What if Winter King simply had no feelings for Betty at all, simply going through with everything up to this point, but entirely on his own. He still found the crown and used it to survive with a younger Marceline. Perhaps that Marceline had died at a later date after modifying the Abadeer axe into a guitar. An Ice King with no interest in replacing his “princess,” would just be a determined Simon wanting to be sane again. We know mainstream Ice King tried to make a spell to control PB’s heart so what if Winter King did something similar with her mind, curing himself of his madness. At least through this, it would explain why Winter King didn’t really remember Betty by much after 1000 years as she was never significant in his eyes. Not a love interest, but a cohort that helped him with a project. This would give credit as to why he became infatuated with Fionna and his only ice-person replica being Marceline.
Edit: I also gotta add how funny Ice Kings edits at the end of the F&C’s story came full circle. Fionna being in love with Winter King feels like a joke that went over peoples heads.
No but the edit is so true. Imagine they pull a gag where it turns out this whole thing was ANOTHER one of IK’s Fionna and Cake books? Like Simon looks through stuff and finds it at the end, like it was some sort of prophecy
That's possible, but I think the most realistic theory is that Winter King is just a much older version of Ice King who was never saved and was completely consumed by his madness. It allowed him to become stronger and cast a spell to make himself seem saner by those around him. That's why Betty seems like a distant memory to him and why he has an ice Marcy with her teenage guitar-- way more time had passed in their reality, and Marcy most likely died at some point.

This is truly beautiful. However, it is the last ten seconds that destroyed me. I have no clue why. From the beautiful tranquility to an empty world that still has it own beauty, matching the melancholic shift in the song. The slow song fade out going over the hill, giving me such a sense of hope, melancholy, and happiness as they near their destination. Even with knowing what happens next. This is too many emotions in 10 seconds, i am not built for this shit

What a scene man, this show is unreal. Never have I ever gotten so invested in something like this. This scene alone was insane with how powerful it was, making me feel an immense amount of emotion. Nostalgic almost even. Made me think back to the days I was in love, how it would feel just like this being with that person. The passion of just sitting at the bus stop overlooking the city. The passion of how they just look at each other, nothing said, but you can see the love. Shit put me in my feelings, such a beautiful thing to witness. Wow

A lot of people seem to think this song is beautifully romantic, but it's sad. The whole point is that it's Betty's pain. She constantly sacrifices for him and his happiness, even when it hurts, getting by on the fact that he's happy. It's a loving relationship, but not a fair one. It's not a partnership.
All of these episodes that spend so much more time with Simon make me look at the ice king in a different way. Sure we knew who he was but so much of the show is with him as the ice king. I feel like it’s easier to understand how hard it must have been for Marcy to watch her father figure slowly go insane and forget who she was and how hard it was to be around him at times. In this episode when the videos of the ice king were played idk something about that scene really stuck with me about how sad of a character the ice king is

This must be one of my favourites scenes from all the animation, besides the inherent beauty, it's loaded with a devastating tragedy, man, how I wish they could be together.
Simon is the person i relate to when i feel depressed, he manages to really hide it by being a good person to his beloved ones, even if these don't take care or attention to him, and sometimes he just feels so null that no feeling can't rmeven relate to his wish to see his beloved one back again, just as i lose that opportunity...

i watched fionna and cake finishing it finally and i have no clue, but this moment is what made me break down into tears, i was sobbing
"I believed in you more than I ever believed in me." This was the main problem with the relationship. They saw the other person as completing them. They don't have love for themselves especially Betty. Half the time they complement each other they also put themselves down in the same breath. Stuff like your so cool I could of never done that.
the way he turns her head away from the firefly to keep looking at her face is kinda reminiscent of how he turned her away from achieving her goals because he wanted to be with her
I think these two ain't gonna have a happy ending, all there relationship is based on Betty putting the 100% and Simon just standing. Even this song tell us how Betty love him, live for him and sacrifice everything for him, while Simon even say "oh no why would I get the bus with her?" Her happiness never were a priority for him
