Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

Yep, you summed it up nicely there. It's tragic mate.
I think that an ending "worse than death" would be just this. Jimmy/Gene living alone, and realizing that his best days are over, that he doesn't mean anything to anyone anymore. He can't do what he loved doing - being a lawyer and scamming people on the side, he doesn't have the one person he cared about the most, and he can't do anything outside of his safety bubble for the risk of being made (and his paranoia). Just a sad, miserable, empty shell of a man reminiscing of his glory days, knowing that he'll never be happy again.

This scene really sums up my love for Better Call Saul AND Breaking Bad. I've seen so many other movies that follow the same pattern where those who participate in crime eventually meet their demise but not before we see countless scenes of them living the good life...with a little evil tossed in along the way that the writers manage to glorify while explaining how they achieved their kingpin status. BCS and BB doesn't do that!! Not only do they show the dark side of crime and the levels it takes one too, but it also shows the perpetrators never really being able to enjoy the fruits of their labor because they're constantly looking over their shoulder. Even the ones that get out of the life...as Gene is shown here...cannot for one second let their guard down!!
