Yes!!! Thank you Rogier for doing this. Honestly its such a pain finding information about Stephania, and getting this information from a trusted source (yOu) gives me more confidence in keeping them(responsibly).
Thank you so much for making this videos. My Stephania is dormant, I didn't know what to do with it. You are such a delightful, professional plant teacher, Please make more plant videos. Thank you!
I enjoy you and your information comes through very clearly. I am glad that you touched on the topic of our responsibilities as plant lovers/growers/hobbyists with regards to the pushing demands of these plants that leads to poaching. Thank you and i look forward for you to cover more plants in future videos!
@@RogiervanVugt1 yes multiple videos please😊. Regionwise, familywise. You could always begin with the common phalaenopsis which is in every grandma's window sill. How did it evolve, where did it come from, what are its parentage etc. I would love to hear it's story, for one
Lovely video, greetings from germany :D been really interested in these lately so seeing the variety in this has only inspired me to try and grow one myself!
Thank you for this great Video! I followed you on Instagram some months ago and im pretty happy that you started with some RUclips Conent. Good and informative Videos about different plants and species are really rare on youtube unfortunaly. Looking foward that you fill this gap! Keep it up! Greetings from Germany :)
Thanks so much. Yes I indeed noticed some pretty "interesting" videos here on youtube of which I really wonder if the creators use a different kind of Google than the rest of this world or simply make everything up😆
Thank you! I enjoyed your talk on the Stephanie. My first plant is sprouting now. I planted in a very good bonsai soil! Watered and added a cloche to the top for humidity . Within two days it had started to open ! I’m watching for too much moisture with the top on ! I’ll be watching your channel to learn more !
Yes! fantastisch Rogier, kan niet wachten op meer video's!! Hopelijk ook een keer van de Akebia trifoliata want dat is m'n foster parent plant bij Hortus Leiden. Veel succes op RUclips
thank you for this!!! i have one stephania erecta and finally started sprouting. im so mesmerized by them. i probably need another one or look for someone else who has one to pollinate it when they flower. :)
I'm really looking forward for your upcomming orchid video's. Would love to see your collection. I'm sure some nice neofinetia cultivars will also be in there.
Thank you so much for making this video, I truly appreciate the information. I recently bought a Stephania erecta and while I wan it for it to arrive, I have been researching about them.
Thank you for the video. I really like the way you explain everything: In a calm manner without too many technical terms for non-botanists. I recently went the „risky way“ and bought a bulb from the internet. Which kind of substrate do you recommend? Mine is in a pon-like mix and I am starting to doubt if it is the right medium. But I am too afraid to put it in soil since I heard that the bulbs rot easily.
They are not picky about the soil I noticed. I grow them in fully organic soil to fully inorganic (akadama) and cannot see that they prefer one soil above another. As long as it drains well but most plants prefer a well draining soil.
Thank you for the awesome first video, I am very much looking forward to the next one! I don't know much about plants, so personally I would enjoy more info on their biology and maybe also phylogenetic relationships / evolution.
Thanks for a great video. I just bought a tuber and I'm going to grow it for the first time. Thanks for the info and showing varieties. I'll make sure to link your video under my video so that more people can see the varieties and your tips
I’m watching this in Nov. 2024. I just purchased Stephania erecta and will try to grow it. What I would like to know is what kind of growing substrate you have yours growing in, looks like soil. I’m trying my hand at growing it in pon so it won’t dry out. I started watering it sparingly and will see what happens in spring. I do have Desert Roses that I let go dormant in winter. I think they are a type of caudex plant because they store water as well. I am careful not to over water those, they don’t like to have a moist substrate, I let them slightly dry out.
Wow I loved this video! I just bought a Stephania erecta . I hope it wakes up, I am trying to raise the humidity but trying to think of ways to keep it warm. I have it in my window with a cloche type of covering to raise the humidity.
Great video, very informative! 👍 My stephania erecta is growing just a stem with female flowers but no leaves. Is this normal, can I do something to get leaves?
Hi Rogier, I bought a stephania erecta not too long ago and it went into dormancy recently. I'm wondering when I should repot it into new media, and if I can cut off the old roots when I do? Very excited to see your future videos! I've subscribed :D
If its dormant now you can certainly repot it. However the root removal is mostly a thing they do for transport. You do not have to remove them. If the pot and soil are still good enough you can also just leave it in the soil. This is more natural for them.
Most of the orchids I grow are in the greenhouse. But I will keep it in mind. I will first finish one I made about the stinging nettle family and one about a plant trip to the island of Mallorca.
Excellent video. Keep up this good work! I wish to know if there is a way to identify male from a female plant other than at the time of flowering. Many thanks from Sydney, Australia.
First of all thank you so much for the knowledge ! I currently in love with Stephania kaweesakii but still trying to figure out the best soil or medium for it. Currently I’m using mostly pumice perlite vermiculite 3:1:1 but still not so sure if that will work with the stephania both raw caudex (freshly poach from the forest) & those with roots already.
Hi. I noticed that they are not picky about the soil as long as it drains well and does not remain soggy. Your mix should also work but since it is fully inorganic you will have to fertilise regularly
Hi, thanks for talking about poaching. More people should be aware and be cautious of the low prices. I have a question about caudex growth rate. In your experience, do the specimens going into dormancy has a faster caudex growth rate? I've only had mine for a short while and I'm wondering if trying to keep the plant forever awake indoors can harm the plant.
Hi, Thank you for sharing your video. I recently bought a Stephania Erecta without any leaves or roots. I planted it in akadama soil to ensure good drainage. I realized mold forming where the caudex was buried after one week. I have since cleaned the caudex and treated it with fungicide. I am waiting to change the potting mix. Can you advise on the best potting mix and ways to prevent mold from forming? Tks
Great video, turns out I wasn't giving mine the right conditions. Mine was only flowering (erecta) and not any producing leaves so I moved it and now it's gone dormant... Is there anything you can do to encourage leaves and root growth?
Most important thing to wake them up is the warmth and a high humidity. Roots seems to form very sparingly especially with bigger tubers. I noticed that deeper planted tubers root better than shallowly planted ones.
Hello Rogier! I bought a Stephania Erecta some months ago, had some growth and leaves. Now it went in to hibernation, but it gave me a seed before it died. How should i plant this? And would you recommend keeping your stephania in a grow cabinet, if you live in a place with not that much sun (Scandinavia). Thank you.
Hi Rogier ! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I am curious where you studied to get where you are and what botanics schools/universities would You recommend for a young person who is looking into going that direction?
To be honest, there are little studies that combine horticulture with the scientific side of botany that I love. I know of one which is the Kew diploma they offer in Kew gardens, London. As for myself I studied horticulture to become a nurseryman until I got a phone call from the botanical garden to ask if I was willing to apply for the job as head of the greenhouses. I did went for that and ten years later I still work there.
@@RogiervanVugt1 thanks so much for the answer! ❤️ Glad you found your place and it’s working out well! Love your videos! One of few that include scientific facts!
Oh. Its very likely that your plant is simply going dormant. You can keep it dryer and a bit cooler now. Next spring it will make new (probably bigger) new growths.
Hi Rogier, very interesting! How did the seedlings do? And can you please tell me what happened to mine for it has a very long upgoing very uninteresting stem... At first with tiny flowers and now with very tiny leaflike things...🙄
I'm getting ready to buy either a Stephania erecta or suberosa. I noticed a lot of people using very gritty medium ( pebbles with almost no soil). I can't help but notice your medium looks more like soil and your plants look very healthy. What medium do you suggest? Thanks in advance.
Indeed. I use a very peaty mix. however also note that they have a very shallow or a small pot. this ensures that the soil dries out between waterings. a whole range of soils is suitable as long as it never remains soggy and can hold some nutrients. Pebbles are waaaay to poor. I think anyone who advices that has never actually grown a Stephania.
Yes!!! Thank you Rogier for doing this. Honestly its such a pain finding information about Stephania, and getting this information from a trusted source (yOu) gives me more confidence in keeping them(responsibly).

i think the flowers sometimes come first and then leaves
This happens very often. No worries. Even the flowerspikes can absorb light and are usefull for the plant. Stems with leaves will follow later.

Akadama is perfect for this. There should be little to no mold. Are you sure it is mold and not a buildbup of calcium?

It was named as recently as 2020 I'm not sure if it was named after a Japanese person.
