    Thank you for the video. I really like the way you explain everything: In a calm manner without too many technical terms for non-botanists. I recently went the „risky way“ and bought a bulb from the internet. Which kind of substrate do you recommend? Mine is in a pon-like mix and I am starting to doubt if it is the right medium. But I am too afraid to put it in soil since I heard that the bulbs rot easily.

    • @RogiervanVugt1
      @RogiervanVugt1  3 года назад +2

      They are not picky about the soil I noticed. I grow them in fully organic soil to fully inorganic (akadama) and cannot see that they prefer one soil above another. As long as it drains well but most plants prefer a well draining soil.

    First of all thank you so much for the knowledge ! I currently in love with Stephania kaweesakii but still trying to figure out the best soil or medium for it. Currently I’m using mostly pumice perlite vermiculite 3:1:1 but still not so sure if that will work with the stephania both raw caudex (freshly poach from the forest) & those with roots already.

    • @RogiervanVugt1
      @RogiervanVugt1  2 года назад

      Hi. I noticed that they are not picky about the soil as long as it drains well and does not remain soggy. Your mix should also work but since it is fully inorganic you will have to fertilise regularly

  • @XiangjunShiTrofimov
    @XiangjunShiTrofimov Год назад

    Hi, thanks for talking about poaching. More people should be aware and be cautious of the low prices. I have a question about caudex growth rate. In your experience, do the specimens going into dormancy has a faster caudex growth rate? I've only had mine for a short while and I'm wondering if trying to keep the plant forever awake indoors can harm the plant.

    Hi Rogier, I bought a stephania erecta not too long ago and it went into dormancy recently. I'm wondering when I should repot it into new media, and if I can cut off the old roots when I do? Very excited to see your future videos! I've subscribed :D

    • @RogiervanVugt1
      @RogiervanVugt1  3 года назад

      If its dormant now you can certainly repot it. However the root removal is mostly a thing they do for transport. You do not have to remove them. If the pot and soil are still good enough you can also just leave it in the soil. This is more natural for them.

    Hi, Thank you for sharing your video. I recently bought a Stephania Erecta without any leaves or roots. I planted it in akadama soil to ensure good drainage. I realized mold forming where the caudex was buried after one week. I have since cleaned the caudex and treated it with fungicide. I am waiting to change the potting mix. Can you advise on the best potting mix and ways to prevent mold from forming? Tks

    • @RogiervanVugt1
      @RogiervanVugt1  2 года назад

      Akadama is perfect for this. There should be little to no mold. Are you sure it is mold and not a buildbup of calcium?

  • @bluebear74

    Great video, turns out I wasn't giving mine the right conditions. Mine was only flowering (erecta) and not any producing leaves so I moved it and now it's gone dormant... Is there anything you can do to encourage leaves and root growth?

    • @RogiervanVugt1
      @RogiervanVugt1  3 года назад +1

      Most important thing to wake them up is the warmth and a high humidity. Roots seems to form very sparingly especially with bigger tubers. I noticed that deeper planted tubers root better than shallowly planted ones.

  • @Dressommer

    Hello Rogier! I bought a Stephania Erecta some months ago, had some growth and leaves. Now it went in to hibernation, but it gave me a seed before it died. How should i plant this? And would you recommend keeping your stephania in a grow cabinet, if you live in a place with not that much sun (Scandinavia). Thank you.

    Hi Rogier ! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

    You recommend for a young person who is looking into going that direction?

    • @RogiervanVugt1
      @RogiervanVugt1  3 года назад

      To be honest, there are little studies that combine horticulture with the scientific side of botany that I love. I know of one which is the Kew diploma they offer in Kew gardens, London. As for myself I studied horticulture to become a nurseryman until I got a phone call from the botanical garden to ask if I was willing to apply for the job as head of the greenhouses. I did went for that and ten years later I still work there.

    Ik heb 2 stephania erectas's, 1 doet het goed en heeft een hele mooie caudex, de ander was idd zoals jij zei beschadigt toen ik hem kreeg. Die doet het ook nog niet. Maar ik zal eens kijken of ik hem wakker kan maken zoals jij zegt. Kan dat ook in een afsluitbare doorzichtige oobergbak? Ik vermoed dat je daar hetzelfde mee kan bereiken als een terrarium.

    I'm getting ready to buy either a Stephania erecta or suberosa. I noticed a lot of people using very gritty medium ( pebbles with almost no soil). I can't help but notice your medium looks more like soil and your plants look very healthy. What medium do you suggest? Thanks in advance.

    • @RogiervanVugt1
      @RogiervanVugt1  2 года назад +2

      Indeed. I use a very peaty mix. however also note that they have a very shallow or a small pot. this ensures that the soil dries out between waterings. a whole range of soils is suitable as long as it never remains soggy and can hold some nutrients. Pebbles are waaaay to poor. I think anyone who advices that has never actually grown a Stephania.
