We are trying to breed Corybas artificially in botanical garden in mainland China for conservation purpose, but as you said, it's quite difficult. We have not succeeded yet. We are still struggling to plant them. Thank you for your sharing! You really helped us a lot!
Hey Rogier! I'm a plant enthusiast from Toronto, Ontario currently attending the University of Toronto. I've started growing stephania and corybas after learning about them from your videos and I just wanted to thank you for making such engaging and informative plant content. I'm a huge fan of your "Plants in focus" series and I really hope you keep making videos! If you know of any plant trade conservation efforts or groups, I would love to get more involved within the plant lover community! Have a great day :)
Hello Rogier, straight to the question: you said something about avoiding to wet the leaves while talking about growing them in terrariums with automatic misting. Is it because wetting the leaves can cause bacterial and fungal growth? Any other reason? Can you say a little more? Should we avoid to wet the leaves while watering them in the zip bag? After years of searching I finally got my first Corybas pictus and I re-watched this video (for the 4th or 5th time probably haha) so that all information is fresh in my mind, that’s how important this video and your help is for the community, thank you!
Hi Rob. Yes indeed. some species are sensitive to bacterial growth in stagnant water on the leaves. Normally leaves are "washed" often preventing the bacterial build up. however in the ziploc bacs the evaporation is so low that a regular watering that washes the leaves would drown the leaves. therefore I avoid getting water on the leaves. if I accidentally wet them I use a tissue to such the water up. 9 out of 10 times the water creates no issue at all. but when it happens it truly suck so thats why I'm rather save than sorry.
Great video, I will definitely follow your care instructions if I manage to obtain some in the future (what is proving to be a challenge after a couple of years of search), but they are certainly worth it. A glance of a Corybas flower always manages to make me smile, I think only a few species of Ophrys can be more effective for that purpose.
I love miniature orchids and did not know of Corybas before your video. They are mesmerizing in their beauty and intricate foliage. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you and congratulations for this very informative video. 👏 I obtained 2 tubers of C. hispidus red in the August and thanks to the help from your friend, they are growing! Only 2 leaves now, but fingers crossed for a flower! I wish you'd made this video a few months before. Would save me a lot of worries 😅 I really hope C. caudatus becomes more available in the future.
I just stumbled your video on my feed. I saw a photo of this orchid a while back on my Facebook feed. It was the pictus one i believe, because i remember thinking the veining is so similar to anthurium crystallinum. And WOW! i didn't know that this genus is more of an "eastern plants", i thought it was "south-american plants" for some reason. And turn out some of them were found in my country (Indonesia). Surprisingly i just search it on marketplace and someone actually sell it for cheap. I wish i knew it sooner, Indonesian house plant market really saturated with south-american plants, we sometimes didn't even know we have very interesting plants in our forest.
Love your videos. Love the information on where the types of plants are from and the types of soil and temperature preferences. Lots of people don’t give enough information. Is there a place you would recommend getting some corybas from?
Very nice video, the plants are so beautiful! Where can I get Corybas in the Netherlands? So far I haven't seen them sold in my preferred orchid nurseries in Germany or the NL.... Any tip where to get them from?
If I have enough I can give you some. And about sellers. If I come across a good trusted selled I will make a story on my insta about them. I did this last summer too.
Hoi Rogier. Leuke lezing. Groeten, Pieter
I finally got two small Corybas pictus plants. They are in a small plastic pot growing in live spagnum moss. I’ve kept the pot in a zip lock bag for required humidity. My question to you is that in time of dormancy how to I manage to create a drier surroundings, because if I leave them in a ziplock bag, then the moisture due to being in the ziplock bag May not help to create a drier surroundings. Pls let me know how you look after coribas pictus in the dormant period, thanks.
well with pictus it is important they never fully dry out. If you still want the substrate to dry out a bit just leave the bag open for a while until the substrate is a bit dryer and close it again. this would be only the case during dormancy. but again. with pictus never let the substrate dry out completely.
Hi love your video, I’m from Malaysia and I start growing Corybas pictus, based on your opinion do you think that does charcoal help the plants to grow well when it is mix with sphagnum moss?
Nice video. I would like to try to sow Corybas symbiotically. Possibly that goes better than on agar. I have had success with many European species, and with Pterostylis and Thelymitra etc. Is it possible to pollinate Corybas flowers at the Hortus and let them produce seeds? Thanks. Pieter
I just got my first Corybas tuber. It is Corybas fornicatus. The tuber is still dormant in its tiny plastic bas. What is the best time to pot it up? Since it is from Malaysia, I would assume that the sphagnum/perlite mixture is the way to go -yes? P.S. Your video is the best!
Hi, I’m Cristina, I’ve been growing orchids for a few years, and I’m looking for Corybas... I saw that you’ve been growing it for years now, I can ask where you found it... because I’m only finding it on American or unsafe sites that don’t ship to Italy. Thanks ♥️
just bought a Corybas ecarinatus off ebay... ive been owning terrariums for over a decade but think i might have just messed up with this orchid. I thought wow! a micro orchid for my micro terrarium! well... 35 bucks later and i find this video.. lol fingers crossed.
I only give them away. But try to spread them first to people who I know are good with these things in the hope they can help spreading the plants in a proper way.
Not sure who sells them. I know that Paul Christian offered them.a couple times. I did sent a few of the caudatus to the UK before the brexit. So they are there and can be spread without extra paperwork in the future.
@@RogiervanVugt1 Who is Paul Christian? Is he a plant seller? Or can I get them from you? I don't know how it works now after Brexit. I can't get any plants from some favourite sellers in NL.
Paul christian rare plants is a bulb nursery in the UK. I sadly cannot supply CITES permits. I hope the people I gave Corybas before the Brexit can propagate them and supply the UK.
hmm get a dooa paluda tank to display it , it has built in humidifier , optional fan and so true ,some people just want to profit from a endangered species , live plants and animals are not antiques , A holes ,haha
I've never heard about these orchids before. It is amazing that you share this knowledge 💚

Every tuber will make a single leaf but every leave can make multiple tubers. Hopefully they will multiply for you!
Thanks for sharing. I wish I had your advice about Australian corybas before. Trying tropical corybas this weekend.
Thank you so much, I love Corybas and I’m grateful you are sharing all this interesting and useful information about one of my favorite Orchids!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Very interesting, even for someone like me who likes plants but is no botanist.
Thank you very much for this video and the explanation. These are so beautiful plants, I really would love to see them in real one time.

To be honest I have never tried charcoal on the Asian species. But if it's not to much and washed I think it will be fine.
