Lecture about plant hypes from the past and hype worthy plants for the future.
During the KekJekkie/Groeninhuis open day may 2022 I gave a lecture about plant hypes of the past and nice plants that are hype worthy in the future.
I sadly has been filmed upright as the plan was to upload it on Instagram but this became a struggle to upload so therefore I post it here.
sorry for the very poor quality. I posted it here so that the few people who missed it could see it afterwards. If people are interested I could see if the quality can be improved.
Filmed by @plantwithroos. Thank you Roos!!

Plants in focus: Corybas
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
Corybas are tiny but illusive orchids. Little is know about their cultivation so this video gives you an introduction on how to take care of these plants. The books that are mentioned are: -Native orchids of Australia (a complete guide) byDavid L. Jones -Corybas West of Wallace's Line by John Dransfield et al.
Plants in focus: Urticaceae (the stinging nettle family)
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.3 года назад
Stinging nettles have a bad reputation. Some however are far more monstrous than you might expect, while others are much loved houseplants. Thank you to the Botanical garden of Leiden where I filmed this video. If you want to know more about this garden, have a look at www.hortusleiden.nl/en/
Plants in focus: Stephania.
Просмотров 17 тыс.3 года назад
Stephania are popular houseplants but they require different care than your average Ficus. This video will explain you their basic needs as well as some background info. Thank you to the Botanical garden of Leiden where I filmed this video. If you want to know more about this garden, have a look at www.hortusleiden.nl/en/

    I’m watching this in Nov. 2024. I just purchased Stephania erecta and will try to grow it. What I would like to know is what kind of growing substrate you have yours growing in, looks like soil. I’m trying my hand at growing it in pon so it won’t dry out. I started watering it sparingly and will see what happens in spring. I do have Desert Roses that I let go dormant in winter. I think they are a type of caudex plant because they store water as well. I am careful not to over water those, they don’t like to have a moist substrate, I let them slightly dry out.

    Hi, I’m Cristina, I’ve been growing orchids for a few years, and I’m looking for Corybas... I saw that you’ve been growing it for years now, I can ask where you found it... because I’m only finding it on American or unsafe sites that don’t ship to Italy. Thanks ♥️

    We are trying to breed Corybas artificially in botanical garden in mainland China for conservation purpose, but as you said, it's quite difficult. We have not succeeded yet. We are still struggling to plant them. Thank you for your sharing! You really helped us a lot!

    I just got my first Corybas tuber. It is Corybas fornicatus. The tuber is still dormant in its tiny plastic bas. What is the best time to pot it up? Since it is from Malaysia, I would assume that the sphagnum/perlite mixture is the way to go -yes? P.S. Your video is the best!

    Hey Rogier! I'm a plant enthusiast from Toronto, Ontario currently attending the University of Toronto. I've started growing stephania and corybas after learning about them from your videos and I just wanted to thank you for making such engaging and informative plant content. I'm a huge fan of your "Plants in focus" series and I really hope you keep making videos! If you know of any plant trade conservation efforts or groups, I would love to get more involved within the plant lover community! Have a great day :)

    Anyone know where to find Corybas in Europe? Been searching for years

  • @RobMulargia

    Hello Rogier, straight to the question: you said something about avoiding to wet the leaves while talking about growing them in terrariums with automatic misting. Is it because wetting the leaves can cause bacterial and fungal growth? Any other reason? Can you say a little more? Should we avoid to wet the leaves while watering them in the zip bag? After years of searching I finally got my first Corybas pictus and I re-watched this video (for the 4th or 5th time probably haha) so that all information is fresh in my mind, that’s how important this video and your help is for the community, thank you!

    • @RogiervanVugt1
      @RogiervanVugt1 Год назад

      Hi Rob. Yes indeed. some species are sensitive to bacterial growth in stagnant water on the leaves. Normally leaves are "washed" often preventing the bacterial build up. however in the ziploc bacs the evaporation is so low that a regular watering that washes the leaves would drown the leaves. therefore I avoid getting water on the leaves. if I accidentally wet them I use a tissue to such the water up. 9 out of 10 times the water creates no issue at all. but when it happens it truly suck so thats why I'm rather save than sorry.

    I finally got two small Corybas pictus plants. They are in a small plastic pot growing in live spagnum moss. I’ve kept the pot in a zip lock bag for required humidity. My question to you is that in time of dormancy how to I manage to create a drier surroundings, because if I leave them in a ziplock bag, then the moisture due to being in the ziplock bag May not help to create a drier surroundings. Pls let me know how you look after coribas pictus in the dormant period, thanks.

    • @RogiervanVugt1
      @RogiervanVugt1 2 года назад

      well with pictus it is important they never fully dry out. If you still want the substrate to dry out a bit just leave the bag open for a while until the substrate is a bit dryer and close it again. this would be only the case during dormancy. but again. with pictus never let the substrate dry out completely.

    Hi, thanks for talking about poaching. More people should be aware and be cautious of the low prices. I have a question about caudex growth rate. In your experience, do the specimens going into dormancy has a faster caudex growth rate? I've only had mine for a short while and I'm wondering if trying to keep the plant forever awake indoors can harm the plant.
