Lecture about plant hypes from the past and hype worthy plants for the future.
During the KekJekkie/Groeninhuis open day may 2022 I gave a lecture about plant hypes of the past and nice plants that are hype worthy in the future.
I sadly has been filmed upright as the plan was to upload it on Instagram but this became a struggle to upload so therefore I post it here.
sorry for the very poor quality. I posted it here so that the few people who missed it could see it afterwards. If people are interested I could see if the quality can be improved.
Filmed by @plantwithroos. Thank you Roos!!

Plants in focus: Corybas
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
Corybas are tiny but illusive orchids. Little is know about their cultivation so this video gives you an introduction on how to take care of these plants. The books that are mentioned are: -Native orchids of Australia (a complete guide) byDavid L. Jones -Corybas West of Wallace's Line by John Dransfield et al.
Plants in focus: Urticaceae (the stinging nettle family)

Stinging nettles have a bad reputation. Some however are far more monstrous than you might expect, while others are much loved houseplants. Thank you to the Botanical garden of Leiden where I filmed this video. If you want to know more about this garden, have a look at www.hortusleiden.nl/en/
Plants in focus: Stephania.

Stephania are popular houseplants but they require different care than your average Ficus. This video will explain you their basic needs as well as some background info. Thank you to the Botanical garden of Leiden where I filmed this video. If you want to know more about this garden, have a look at www.hortusleiden.nl/en/
Love this video! Bedankt
I’m watching this in Nov. 2024. I just purchased Stephania erecta and will try to grow it. What I would like to know is what kind of growing substrate you have yours growing in, looks like soil. I’m trying my hand at growing it in pon so it won’t dry out. I started watering it sparingly and will see what happens in spring. I do have Desert Roses that I let go dormant in winter. I think they are a type of caudex plant because they store water as well. I am careful not to over water those, they don’t like to have a moist substrate, I let them slightly dry out.
just bought a Corybas ecarinatus off ebay... ive been owning terrariums for over a decade but think i might have just messed up with this orchid. I thought wow! a micro orchid for my micro terrarium! well... 35 bucks later and i find this video.. lol fingers crossed.
Hi, I’m Cristina, I’ve been growing orchids for a few years, and I’m looking for Corybas... I saw that you’ve been growing it for years now, I can ask where you found it... because I’m only finding it on American or unsafe sites that don’t ship to Italy. Thanks ♥️
(I also sent you the same message on ig, but I saw that you can’t get messages on ig)🥹
Just beautiful 🤩
Very informative
I was completely unaware of this genus - they are beautiful
Love your video. Especially how you care about the plants and planet
Thank you
Managed to get one of these, fingers crossed for growth! How does this compare to Nervilia plicata in terms of care?
We are trying to breed Corybas artificially in botanical garden in mainland China for conservation purpose, but as you said, it's quite difficult. We have not succeeded yet. We are still struggling to plant them. Thank you for your sharing! You really helped us a lot!
Please do an update video. You have the only real informative video.
Excellent video. Keep up this good work! I wish to know if there is a way to identify male from a female plant other than at the time of flowering. Many thanks from Sydney, Australia.
Meine Stephania Wechsel lang kann man die schneiden?
I just got my first Corybas tuber. It is Corybas fornicatus. The tuber is still dormant in its tiny plastic bas. What is the best time to pot it up? Since it is from Malaysia, I would assume that the sphagnum/perlite mixture is the way to go -yes? P.S. Your video is the best!
Thanks for sharing. I wish I had your advice about Australian corybas before. Trying tropical corybas this weekend.
New to the Stephania. Great video. thanks.
Hey Rogier! I'm a plant enthusiast from Toronto, Ontario currently attending the University of Toronto. I've started growing stephania and corybas after learning about them from your videos and I just wanted to thank you for making such engaging and informative plant content. I'm a huge fan of your "Plants in focus" series and I really hope you keep making videos! If you know of any plant trade conservation efforts or groups, I would love to get more involved within the plant lover community! Have a great day :)
I really enjoyed your video. You made wish to buy more Stephania plants. Thanks so much.
Great video
Love your videos. Love the information on where the types of plants are from and the types of soil and temperature preferences. Lots of people don’t give enough information. Is there a place you would recommend getting some corybas from?
Anyone know where to find Corybas in Europe? Been searching for years
Hello Rogier, straight to the question: you said something about avoiding to wet the leaves while talking about growing them in terrariums with automatic misting. Is it because wetting the leaves can cause bacterial and fungal growth? Any other reason? Can you say a little more? Should we avoid to wet the leaves while watering them in the zip bag? After years of searching I finally got my first Corybas pictus and I re-watched this video (for the 4th or 5th time probably haha) so that all information is fresh in my mind, that’s how important this video and your help is for the community, thank you!
Hi Rob. Yes indeed. some species are sensitive to bacterial growth in stagnant water on the leaves. Normally leaves are "washed" often preventing the bacterial build up. however in the ziploc bacs the evaporation is so low that a regular watering that washes the leaves would drown the leaves. therefore I avoid getting water on the leaves. if I accidentally wet them I use a tissue to such the water up. 9 out of 10 times the water creates no issue at all. but when it happens it truly suck so thats why I'm rather save than sorry.
Would love to see a Stephania Pierre ❤
Fantastic video thank you!
Real good video and caudiciforms!
hmm get a dooa paluda tank to display it , it has built in humidifier , optional fan and so true ,some people just want to profit from a endangered species , live plants and animals are not antiques , A holes ,haha
Excellent video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and great passion.
Thank you so much for making this videos. My Stephania is dormant, I didn't know what to do with it. You are such a delightful, professional plant teacher, Please make more plant videos. Thank you!
He Rogier, i am from the Netherlands. Do you know a good and respectable seller of corybas species in Europe?
Rewatched this and it’s still fascinated me! Thank you Rogier I hope to see more
Hi Rogier, what a amazing video. Super beautiful plants. Where are you from?
Could you please let me know the kinda soil/substrate you used for the plants. Also, does Dioscorea also like similar substrate n humidity?
I finally got two small Corybas pictus plants. They are in a small plastic pot growing in live spagnum moss. I’ve kept the pot in a zip lock bag for required humidity. My question to you is that in time of dormancy how to I manage to create a drier surroundings, because if I leave them in a ziplock bag, then the moisture due to being in the ziplock bag May not help to create a drier surroundings. Pls let me know how you look after coribas pictus in the dormant period, thanks.
well with pictus it is important they never fully dry out. If you still want the substrate to dry out a bit just leave the bag open for a while until the substrate is a bit dryer and close it again. this would be only the case during dormancy. but again. with pictus never let the substrate dry out completely.
Hi, thanks for talking about poaching. More people should be aware and be cautious of the low prices. I have a question about caudex growth rate. In your experience, do the specimens going into dormancy has a faster caudex growth rate? I've only had mine for a short while and I'm wondering if trying to keep the plant forever awake indoors can harm the plant.
What are the sources for Corybas? I'm in Canada, I've been trying to find some for quite a few years!
People like you should ONLY BE TALKING ABOUT BOTANY LIKE THIS YOURE THE MAN
Thanks for a great video. I just bought a tuber and I'm going to grow it for the first time. Thanks for the info and showing varieties. I'll make sure to link your video under my video so that more people can see the varieties and your tips
Thank you for the great information and for staying on point with the facts and your experiences with this plant.
Help my stephania erecta was doing beautiful and now it has stagnated. And the three lovely leaves yellow the got black spots on tips and fell :(
is it going into a state of dormancy? i read that stephania erecta will go "leafless" then wake up again in spring
beautiful collection! how are those seeds doing?
This is actually so so helpful!! loved the video and you were super clear. Wouldn't change a thing. Keep it up :)
Thank you! I enjoyed your talk on the Stephanie. My first plant is sprouting now. I planted in a very good bonsai soil! Watered and added a cloche to the top for humidity . Within two days it had started to open ! I’m watching for too much moisture with the top on ! I’ll be watching your channel to learn more !
I am growing some from seeds!
Thank you for sharing the talk, I really enjoyed it!
Hello Rogier, do you maybe happen to know a place where I could get some of the asian species of corybas? Sadly, no one seems to sell or trade them in europe.
There are no steady suppliers. That is something we arenhoping to change. When I see a good source for them I share it in my insta stories.
Pro in action 🎬 the way it is suppose to be done 👌 😉 keep it up sir.
Very good and intersting talk! I really hope Haworthias get just a little more hype in Europe, i love them so much but all the fancy asian hybrids are almost impossible to come by here :/
They are getting more popular luckily. Check Danny's Cactus and more online. He imports Haworthia from Asia and often has very interesting and quite affordable plants
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Very interesting, even for someone like me who likes plants but is no botanist.
Wow I loved this video! I just bought a Stephania erecta . I hope it wakes up, I am trying to raise the humidity but trying to think of ways to keep it warm. I have it in my window with a cloche type of covering to raise the humidity.
