Chemical peels have worked for me! I have had 3 medium chemical peels so far, once a month. It’s called the VI Peel. I had an outbreak of comedonal acne (seriously was all over my lower cheeks and lower jaw) and along with other prescriptions my dermatologist suggested, this has helped decrease and get rid of them about 80% now. You might get an initial breakout like me though cause it pushes the gunk out, so it’s not for everyone. But with patience, you will see results.

They also wouldn’t advise doing them at home if you’re not a dermatologist. Well I’m not. I do my own peels. I have four of them in very strong strengths. Use them twice a day..I’ve been learning about this stuff. I’m just doing what a dermatologist would do that read a book and listened to an instructor and got their degree or whatever. I’m happy with the results I’ve been getting. I’m gonna get more acids as well...I want a whole new skin on my face. I’m not sure why but I’ve only been peeling in certain areas...I have them in very strong percentages as well...not sure why it’s only destroying layers in certain areas...

I've done chemical peel 10 ys ago and I noticed great results. The only thing I regret is not using enough sunscreen at that time because I thought they irritated my skin. Just if I had your channel back then... 😜 And I was advised by my dermatologist at the time to use La Roche Posey Cicaplast to combat dryness and irritation which I think is a great moisturizer for a wounded skin. I'm considering doing another chemical peel again so thank you for your video! This time sunscreen won't be an issue! ☺️

I should have known but oh, well, head in sand just heard what I wanted to hear. The key here is there was no education that was included in the process including that I needed to be smart about further sun exposure. Anyway...agree with all you said and the RISKS ... and asking about the credentialing is KEY !!!

Hi Dr. Gray, I already received two chemical peels from the PCA skin care line. The second peel consisted of the sensi and salicylic acid. I wasn't being careful with sun exposure for the first two days following my peel and by the second week, my skin began to break out more than usual compared to the first peel. And the face washes I've been using contain lactic acid PCA Facial Wash and PCA Facial Wash Oily/Problem skin. Once I added the PCA Smoother Toner with the Facial Wash Oily/Problem my skin began breaking out more where my congested had already existed. Some where becoming cystic and very painful to sleep on either side of my face. The esthetician I went to see for my chemical peel didn't even want to do my chemical peel because of how raw and dry my skin was. Currently, I'm just washing my face with their regular Facial Wash and moisturizing with their ReBalance and Skin Balm moisturizers. Do you think this breakout was triggered by introducing the new cleanser and toner or maybe a combination of the chemical peel and new products? Hope to hear from you soon! Best, Nancy

There are many derms who specialize in skin of color. Long story time share about back acne and peels for anyone interested-
I had moderate to severe back acne all across my back which also had left some pigmentation left from healing spots. I asked my derm about a chemical peel, which she never had done before on the back. I was overall happy with the results. I had a series of 3 peels. It definitely kicked off my acne healing and then I was able to maintain well after by consistently using a SA wash on my back a few times a week. I remember my derm was excited I wanted to do it because she wanted to see if the results were worth it for others with back acne. The first treatment was pretty meh because she used the lowest strength and the skin on the back was just too tough it seemed like for that to be effective. The second two, whoo boy! I felt those. Not in anywhere unbearable but I definitely felt the burn. Then the following days it was kind of funny/gross because when I went to take my shirt off at the end of day over my head a little cloud of dead skin would poof all around me.
Was the peel necessary to heal my back acne? No probably not but I am glad I did it because I am someone who gets really discouraged if I don’t see results and give up, so kicking it off with a peel gave me confidence and a great head start to heal it and it definitely encouraged me NOT to pick because I didn’t want anymore of those dark spots all over my back after going through that.

Dermatologists wouldn't touch 10 or 30% AHA/BHA. It is more common for them to be performed by dermal therapists/aestheticians (trained, not self proclaimed). Superficial, light and some medium solutions can be performed by DT's. Whereas some combination, medium and deep peels 50-70% should only be performed by cosmetic doctors or dermatologists.
I'm also a fan of mineral sunscreens as opposed to chemical sunscreens. It's worth the slight whitey film.

There's a bit of bias in this video towards lasers when she says peels aren't best for fine lines and won't helping scarring. An extremely skilled peel doctor can essentially eradicate wrinkles and sun damage in a single session with a medium-depth or deep peel. A combination peel of 70% glycolic/35% TCA, Jessners + 35% TCA, and dry ice + 35% TCA are what's needed for a true medium depth peel. Dry ice/35% TCA peels are extremely effective for scars because icing the rims of the scars allows the TCA to penetrate deeper. In addition, there's 100% TCA cross or painting which is way more effective for pitted scars than any laser. Most doctors just don't do these types of peels because there's an art to it and obviously some risk. Don't be fooled though, lasers have a ton of risks as well.

Dr Dray, thank you once again for the wonderful information regarding skin care. I have learned so so much from you. I am 60 years old, I have been using Tretinoin for about a year and a half. I am looking to add something to help reduce fine lines, sunspots from years of not using sunscreen. I am diligent with sunscreen now. I have been researching microneedling with PRP. I intend to find a good cosmetic dermatologist who offers that service..What do you think of micro needling? The stronger peels scare me a little. I would appreciate any more information you can give. Thanks again, Anne

I did 30% TCA chemical peels before but I never had any discomfort during the procedure or after. In fact I usually fall asleep during them.My skin gets slightly red and the results are quite subtle even after 2-3 times. I have thick oily acne prone skin. I’m still happy with the results but I’m always wondering if there is something that would suit my skin better.maybe different percentage or different kind of peel? I don’t any results with glycolic peels at all.

I am semi-addicted to the Vi and Vitalize Peels! They work for me. Along with other treatment therapies, my monthly peels have even out my skin tone, lightened my dark spots, shrunken the size of my pores, and given me a glow. Haven't worn makeup in a couple of months, and that's major for me! (Edit: I just completed a series of 4 peels, one month apart, and hope my Dermatologist will allow me to book another series of peels. I want complete clear skin!)

We did glycolic peels in esthetician school. It was 40% free acid so could only be left on the skin for up to 1.5 minutes. That was some stout stuff. We used RX Systems from a derm Dr. Samuels. It was great. How do you feel about using glacial creams with glycolic acid in them everyday?

    • @AaronW-ww4ds

Serums are in very low percentage that do very gentle exfoliation and you won't have to do the down time that TCA does as TCA you literally shed like a snake for about 2 weeks where glycolic wouldn't need the downtime

Oh also a question I’ve been meaning to ask...this summer I had 2 level cervical disc replacement and have a pretty large scar on front of my neck (you should see the stares I get sometimes). Anyway, I’m guessing sunscreen is probably my best thing in my arsenal as far as it goes to make sure it heals as well as it can. I don’t really mind it, I just hope the redness subsided a bit after some time. It’s really my badge of honor, because I lived for over a decade with constant pain. :) Hope you have a wonderful day, Doctor!
