In short, I saw all as a metaphor of the unethical use of shortcuts and the greed for power.
I also had a similar theory. that bluepees are the start. well, maybe Satori (the horse) was the first, reached enlightenment in life and became a spirit, and was then followed by other spirits, already passed souls who didn't become the poes, but more like the champions and king. souls who wished to follow Satori and became bluepees. the same way monetarists have head monks who teach and train others. as bluepees they're tasked with letting go of their worldly desires, like greed, and should they be able to, they too can become fully enlightened Satori. but those who fail and fall victim to their greed become malformed bubblefrogs, and Link then releases them from that curse, reverting them back to a bluepee and taking away the gem they coveted. and in exchange for saving those bluepees and releasing them from that torment, the one who swallowed the gems was then allowed to become a bluepee and begin "training" like all the others. though I think yours makes more sense, with the whole greed thing and collecting the gems in the first place being a problem, a living human collecting them then shouldn't have a "good" outcome. though he seemed happy to become a bluepee, so idk if this is really a "bad" outcome from his pov.

I can agree, I think Zeltik is giving too much credit to every little detail he can find not taking into account that the game was translated from Japanese, and a lot of information could have been lost or mistranslated, that humans are not perfect and filling a game with text is a lot of work, someone might very well at some point have put some text somewhere just to call it a day, and that it's a game, and it's supposed to be humorous, so everything might not be intended to make sense.
@@mickaelperrier6379 I think he's taking the original Japanese into account quite a lot, considering how often he references it in other videos and even in this one for the original name of the Bubbulfrogs.
Hearing about the Mayoi makes me think that the Bubbulgems are crystallized regret. And when we shoot the Bubbulfrogs, we force them to release their regret.
One thing that makes TotK great is that it introduces so many new elements (caves, new fruit, new monsters, etc) in a way that makes sense they couldn’t have appeared in BotW
I do wonder how will Nintendo keep adding to the series going forward by incorporating all this features without relying on the same excuse over and over again (eg: Ganondorf caused an earthquake). If fans truly want the Depths to return in the future that means Nintendo needs a really good explanation for why all this caverns exist and why Link HAS to explore them every single time they appear.
@@javiervasquez625 that’s true. Will there be a 3rd game in this setting? And if so, could we potentially explore and entire new kingdom? I honestly don’t know how they could add more to these games WITHOUT dropping the ball (outside of a new kingdom or two)

@@tcoralloart1735 yeah, cause the Lord of the mountain definitely gives off great forest spirit vibes: weird glows form at night, form is an animal with a different face (although the great forest spirit’s is way cooler), and the people are scared of it, and treat what is a beautiful creature as something to be feared
I think the babbul frogs are spirits who were trying to achieve enlightenment and were in the blupee phase, but got too greedy for rupees and started hoarding them. When they aren't in their frog form, they turn into babbul gems. If there is some association with greed, that would explain why one wants to collect more so badly. There are a few Zelda games which have characters who are punished for their greed, so i think it fits thematically!
I totally agree, although I think they aren’t “collecting” rupees (since that would require the Blupees to steal rupees, and it would also go against the whole “greed is bad” thing), but instead I think the Blupees have as many rupees in them as they had when they turned into a spirit. They still hold on to some of their greed but its not much. Meanwhile I’m pretty certain the Satori (or enlightened one in this case) has no rupees to drop because they are completely void of greed. So for a Blupee to become a Satori, they probably have to let go of all their riches, which they might be very hesitant to do even as a blue spirit rabbit
I assumed the Bublefrogs were just Blupees playing games with hylians; leading you into a cave, hiding as a frog, then fleeing home to Satori once they're caught. This would also explain why Satori leads you to them.
That is a much more wholesome, or. Dark take if you read further into it. By dark, I mean. They play this “game”, and leave you something that turns mortals into bluepees.
@@mackenziebeeney3764It could be that they give the Bubblgems as rewards for finding them with the intention that you'd sell them, or keep them as a neat relic rather than swallowing the damn things. And considering that the only one crazy enough to eat the things actively wants to become a member of their species they either don't know or are okay with Koltin eating them because it's a fate he actively wants instead of a nasty forced transformation
There's a deeper theme against greed in the Zelda series in general. Ganondorf was once regarded as the King of Thieves, his greed and lust for power driving him to becoming a demon king, and as you mentioned in the video, a number of characters throughout the series are punished for their greed and ask Link to help free them, giving away the objects of the greed as rewards for their freedom.
Great theory as always, Zeltik. This makes me curious if Satori isn't exactly angry or on bad terms with these Bubbelfrogs, because he does lead Link to caves where they are lurking. Perhaps Satori's trying to guide them to enlightenment just like himself and the bluepees. And since he's a sage, it would make sense that he'd want to guide them to a better place.
From the beginning they've always kind of reminded me of no face in spirited away when he's inside the bath house and transforms into that monster. Ultimately there's a regular frog within causing him to change and it's been enveloped by a monster. I know that's not exactly the same thing in Zelda but that's how I look at it with these little guys
@@Xenunnaki And even if it's not a direct reference studio Ghibli does lean heavily on inspiration and reference to Japanese folklore and mythology so there could be something within that as well
The Bubbulgens appear to be cursed, and taking one makes you desire more. The gold taken from No Face is cursed, and those who take it become greedy, only to get eaten by the spirit. It's not until he spits out the frog after eating the medicine Chihiro gave him that he reverts. He even tells her "Want some gold? I'm not giving it to anyone else!" Implying that the gold he made was never for those spirits to take, as it hadn't been offered freely. Since the gems become Link's upon defeating the spirit, we can take them without consequence. Then Link gives them freely to Koltan, who has no evil intent, thus is not cursed either. Just like how No Face wanted only Chihiro to have gold because she refused to take any without permission (and even rejected the offer) the bubbulfrogs may want only Link to have these gems
@@Zerolink30just make sure you have your sensor set to find bubblfrogs. Makes finding caves a lot easier! This might not help much for you since you only have 2 caves left though. At this point I'd just look them up with an online map. Good luck!
15:15 I always thought that Koltin knew what the difference between a Blupee and The Satori is and that him turning into a regular Blupee was to say that he didn’t have the qualities necessary to turn into another Satori..
I'm pretty sure Koltin meant he wanted to be a Satori, like the Lord of the Mountain, but he turns into a Blupee instead, which was not what he wanted, because there can only be one Satori. He didn't mean Satori as an all encompassing term for Satori, Blupees, and Bubbulfrogs.
Also interesting to note that you run into various treasure hunters, all interested in looking for bubbulfrogs but none ever actually finding any. It could possibly be because they are looking with the intent of making money (showing greed) and perhaps that is why blupees don’t show them the way to bubbulfrogs. I wonder why Link is special. Like the shrine sages, maybe these spirits know Link can help them and isn’t looking for monetary rewards.
It seems like that rule applies to all sorts of spirits. Pretty sure I recall seeing text somewhere that implies even the dragons can only be seen by those pure of heart.
Same here! I've been refusing to shoot them because they don't attack and are just minding their own business in the caves. Maybe I will start now lol.
I'm glad I watched this. I kept feeling bad for the Bubbulfrogs I shot, because I thought they were similar spirits to the Blupees and Sartori, but knowing we most likely are setting them free, I feel much better about it! 🥰
The irony of collecting Bubbl Gems. By collecting the gems of greed, Koltin did achieve enlightenment. Koltin gave away all his valuables away to Link as Link gave the Bubbl Gems in exchange. So, did they avoid the act of Greed by freely giving away what they possessed? Or was this legend mere misunderstanding of the dangers. Of forces they don’t clearly understand, like the Secret Stones before it became a forbidden practice?
Could have been a literal spiritual calling or a pilgrimage for Koltin. He gave away all worldly possessions in pursuit of a noble cause - he simply wanted to become as an enlightened being.
Glad you did your story analysis but this type of video (from Zeltik specifically) was one of the reasons I was hype for the game. When playing I kept seeing things and thinking 'I bet Zeltik is gonna have a field day with this'
The game leads you to believe you're just hunting down these bubblfrogs for their gems...but this explanation makes a LOT more sense, for Link and everything else. That the bubblfrogs are a sort of corrupted form, and you're freeing the blupees from their influence.
Rauru is a Zonai, but he also holds the title of King of the Owls, and owls are important in Zonai artifacts. Also, keep in mind that Rauru shares a name with the Sage of Light in OoT, and that Rauru has the form of an owl when he gives link advice in Hyrule from the sacred realm. Satori might just be the sage of light from OoT.
Owls are a sign of wisdom, both in the games and in real life (symbol of the goddess of wisdom, Athena) Satori could be the form taken by individuals who achieve absolute wisdom, and so could there be for power (some kind of Ganon-like?) and courage
Wonderful vid Zeltik! I never bothered completing this quest for Bubbulfrog gems. I hope you do a video covering the new versions of old monsters like Gleeoks, Like Likes, etc. Maybe compare them to their older version and the differences.
Wow I believe your analysis is spot on. Bubbulfrogs remind me of No face from Spirited Away, and I guess it is not really surprising considering how much botw/totk are inspired by Miyazaki films. No face is depicted as a greedy spirit and the more it consumes and hoards wealth, the uglier it gets. So just as you explain in the video, I think these creatures end up becoming a Bubbulfrog as a result of their greediness exactly like No face. Also Link not obsessing over the gems is a good parallel with Chihiro who represents a pure hearted person in the film. Anyway great analysis as always! I love your content!
No Face turned corrupt after eating that greedy frog spirit. It was intended as a punishment, but No Face ended up cursing himself in the process. However Chihiro, who never took any gold, was not greedy, and No Face sought to genuinely reward her. However she rejected that too and even helped him despite that, giving him medicine that made him vomit the very thing that corrupts him. In this case, Link is both Chihiro and the medicine.
My head-canon is that Bubbul Frogs are Blupees that have consumed others of its kind. As has been pointed out in other places, if you look closely, their faces are comprised of four Blupee faces. When the are vanquished, they drop a gem with 3 sets of Blupee antennae and another Blupee that runs away, totaling to 4 Blupees, the same as it has on its face. If this is true, then maybe Bubbul frogs are considered ‘lost’ beings because they attempted to become something stronger.
Your Tears of the Kingdom content never fails to impress me. I never thought that much about those bubbulfrogs, but you did an amazing job of exploring the lore behind them.
It's fascinating that like the Secret Stones, consuming bubble gems turns you into a monster. But I suppose the Intention of the user also matters. Link I suppose only wasn't cursed because he gave the gems away, a small act of selflessness.
The stones make you a dragon regardless. The type of dragon depends on what you intended to do. Zelda only wanted to survive long enough to give link his sword. Ganondorf wanted to destroy everything
@@tanandalynch9441I wouldn't say it's just about what you intended to do in that moment before you swallowed the stone, I'd say it's also about the goodness in your being. I believe the sacred stone connects with your inner being in order to amplify the magical abilities you were born with, also reaching deep into your heart to see if you're pure or not. I reckon the stone will change color in order to show if you're good or not. So maybe it also changes you on your long run intentions anyway.
Dang, this was REALLY GOOD. also when you brought up the greed concept i was thinking back to TP with that Jiovani character. Also the greedy frog character reminds me if that greedy frog that worked in the hot spring spa in the movie "spirited away". Another connection there. This makes so much sense! Thank you!
The item description always made it sound like Link was being "consumed" by greed after looking at the Bubbbul Gem, to me at least. After watching this video, it makes the description make _so much_ more sense. Very interesting!
Off topic but I would love to see an analysis on Dondon's. They seam to be able to turn luminous stones into other gems, including zonite. That means that there is a chance that they are the source of all of these materials, which would be really interesting because that would mean that these creatures probably existed long before the zonai and predate anything we know.
so would that mean that some ore/zonaite deposits are just large piles of Dondon waste? honestly with how the deposits look, it wouldnt surprise me if that were the case.
I’m so happy to see these videos on a regular basis again. Once I finished Tears back in June, I was so excited to jump back into the Zelda RUclips channels. Thanks for the content. ❤

Thank you for this! Long time Zeltik fan here, really happy you went back to presenting content in a shorter video like this which is both incredibly interesting and also easily digestible. Thank you! :)
Interesting stuff. Personally I thought the chunky frogs were some of the rabbit things that had been trapped in the caves for a very long time. They had been sealed when whatever sealed the caves. They became kinda corrupted or transformed into the frogs over the centuries. That's why the rabbit things always lead us to the caves and then vanish. They led us to trapped corrupted brethren and we freed them by knocking them down and out.
My theory rn about half way through the video at 12:00 is that bluppeeeeeeeess that we’re enlightened got greed and wanted the gem. And turned into the frog. Bc greed is something you need to let go of, it’s a physical attachment to the mortal realm.
I figured that the little statue under the Mount Satori pond was a nod to the little flute playing boy in Link to the Past. He was already too far gone when you return his flute, and he fades out and turns into this little wooden deer-like statue.
Link can see Koroks, the Blupees, Satori and was chosen by the Master Sword. He's a pure spirit, so perhaps he's cleansing the darkness from corrupted Blupees in the same way Rauru's "Blessing of Light" can cleanse the darkness lingering in Link's body after Link's right arm was crippled by Ganondorf's Gloom attack. Link has the ability to remove darkness and corruption, and he cannot be affected by corruption itself even when he was overwhelmed by Gloom.
He can also see the elemental spirit dragons which is said that most hylians cannot see them and link just so happens to. The light dragon can probably be seen by all though since it isn't an elemental spirit dragon per say
Did you mention the Blupees that spawn out of a dead Bubbulfrog don't drop rupees if you hit them? I might've missed it but either way that's another point to support either the idea that Bubbulfrogs are the bloated Blupees who were refusing to part with their rupees, or the link between the bubbul gems and rupees. Maybe the gem is just a massive amalgamation of all the rupees they should have given up before. Or come to think of it, maybe the gem is an ingrown rupee that needs to get cut out so the blupee can be healthy again and start growing more rupees naturally.
I always thought the bubblefrogs were like greedy frogs that ate blupees and gems so the blupee outside would lead link to the cave to free it’s friend 😅
In TOTK if you place a fruit in the basket beneath a cherry tree, Satori will come and show you the caves, as if its asking you to free the cursed Blupees
The town of eastland in Texas has a local legends of a time capsule that was buried for 100 years with a horned toad inside and when it was dug up in the 80s the toad was still alive and named Old Rip
just wanted to say, with the introduction of bubblefrogs, came a new pin. It's the same blue-ish colour matching the bubbul gem and the other pins match the other rupee colourations. Thought that was pretty cool..
This makes me wonder if the great fairies are the result of regular fairies consuming rupees. Actually wait, that makes too much sense. They straight up tell you that they lose power when people stop offering rupees to them, of course they consume rupees. Which is why Tingle never achieves his goal, because he only collects rupees he doesn't eat them.
Another interesting parallel with Tingle: in Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, he loses rupees instead of health when attacked, just like when you're wearing the armor.
Great video! Is it possible the owl statues of the zonai are actually Blupee inspired? Also, you mentioned Kolton and his brother are hylian, but are we sure on that? Their build is just so different from every other Hylian in the game.
@@convalaria It could be that the statues are just a kinda "there are 3 ways to become immortal" Zonai's tutorials. Ganon probably stole the info for boar at some point to create darkbeast since he couldn't do dragon at the time. Maybe owl/boar were made/discovered after Rauru and/or the stones were sealed since they seems less powerful.
Interestingly, I had to pause and take care of something during the bit about the greedy frog. Came back in the middle of the description of them and thought that sounds a lot like the Frox, too.
I am greatly surprised by no mention of the magical armour from Twilight Princess, which functioned in much the same way and, interestingly, was originally intended to use magic instead. One is left wondering whether these sets of armour are somehow connected, and if yes, by what or by whom.
Thanks mate. It's nice to see regular posting again. I remember seeing someone say that considering the eccentric appearance of bubbulfrogs, they were 1 of the biggest spoilers from the art book leak back in Feb. It's nice to get them more info. Something else to consider is that the great sky island is the spot w/ caves in the sky. So those 4 go towards the total count. How did they get up there? You might say it's bcuz the island used to be on the ground, but I thought that only applied to the temple of time
While Satori (the Lord of The Mountain) clearly seems to be inspired by the Great Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke, the Bubbulfrogs remind me No-Face from Spirited Away. Always hungry and greedy and although naive and not-harmful in nature, turns into a frog-like monstrosity due to it's hunger/gluttony.
An interesting theory. I'm just confused about why the gems work the way they do for Koltin, then. If hoarding these treasures out of greed stops one from being a true spirit, or if they symbolize doubt itself that prevents the bearer from achieving enlightenment, I'm having trouble understanding why giving a great number of the gems to a human wouldn't just corrupt them into something akin to a Bubbulfrog, rather than turning them into a spirit. It would make more sense with this theory if, after Koltin ate all the gems, he turned into some eldritch horror, an amalgamation of souls and faces, perhaps similar in shape to a Frox, which Link would have to kill in a boss fight. Then, perhaps after Link removed all the gems from him again, he would transform into a spirit.
He gives away all of his treasures to Link in exchange for them, and he doesn’t hoard them. He essentially destroys them. And in sending Link to hunt down the Bubblefrogs, he’s freeing cursed Blupees. Maybe it’s his reward from the Satori for his role in freeing the cursed blupees, while Link’s reward is the mystic armor.
I have a theory on that because I thought the same thing. Either the gems only transform a collector into a monster if you only hoard them and don't consume them (consuming them would make them useless to be spent so a true greedy person would probably never want to waste them but rather store them away and only by consuming them do you prove you understand their power) OR they aren't the original thing that was hoarded but rather a byproduct of the creation and subsequent freeing of the spirit from their greedy form. The gem perhaps being so beautiful and enticing due to its nature as a physical representation of the beauty of excess wealth and greed, but by consuming it; using it up instead of hoarding it your soul takes the lessons that were learned by the previous lost souls about the cost of greed and then you are free to become a blupee. That's why it takes so many gems though because you have to prove that you really are willing to take all the lessons from the previous lost souls.
I thought the bubbul gems looked like an encased rupee, maybe indicating that the bubbulfrogs were blupees that were too stingy with the rupees they collected and made sure no one could steal them by encasing them in the essence of Satori and developing defenses, turning them into bubbulfrogs.
What if there's a connection between Satori and the Zonai? Notice how Mineru's owl mask is similar to a Blupee? Satori is said to be the spirit of a Sage, and Mineru is the Sage of Spirits. Could they be connected?

The recent titles have made many references to Ghibli films, so this may not be that far off
@@Xenunnaki And even if it's not a direct reference studio Ghibli does lean heavily on inspiration and reference to Japanese folklore and mythology so there could be something within that as well
This is a little off topic but in this game, you also have a girlfriend who turned into a dragon and she can carry you around.
Wow, I hadn’t finished Koltin’s quest, so I’m actually gladly surprised that it did something to him in the end

15:15 I always thought that Koltin knew what the difference between a Blupee and The Satori is and that him turning into a regular Blupee was to say that he didn’t have the qualities necessary to turn into another Satori..
Bubbulfrogs are one of the great mysteries of this game! Plus dropping the most rewarding collectible!
Yeah, their glow makes me want to collect... even more.
The Koltin fabric is so amazing.
MUCH more worth collecting than a thousand pieces of shit, to be sure
Link is a pure/innocent soul, I think. He can see koroks when others can't
It seems like that rule applies to all sorts of spirits.
Pretty sure I recall seeing text somewhere that implies even the dragons can only be seen by those pure of heart.
Now I don't feel guilty about shooting frogs. Thanks Zeltik!
neither frogs nor foxes! you have been vindicated :)
Same 😂
The irony of collecting Bubbl Gems.
Wait, their bubbles do something? I never got hit so I didn’t know
same
it just knocks you over
yea i didnt know either so i let one hit me and it just knocks you over
My curiosity got the better of me, because I didn't know what the bubbulfrog was. For a while, I didn't even know I was supposed to shoot them.
Owls are a sign of wisdom, both in the games and in real life (symbol of the goddess of wisdom, Athena)
Satori could be the form taken by individuals who achieve absolute wisdom, and so could there be for power (some kind of Ganon-like?) and courage
Now I'm worried that Koltin is eventually going to become a bubbulfrog because of his obsession with bubbul gems
Makes me wonder if we will get anymore different forms of the satori in future Zelda games.
People use the inspired by Ghibli movies argument, but where's the proof?

This one was so fascinating and I love it when you guys partner up. Thanks!
The Koltin quest is, in my opinion, the best collection quest in Zelda.

It’s always a good day when Zeltik uploads: )
I figured that the little statue under the Mount Satori pond was a nod to the little flute playing boy in Link to the Past. He was already too far gone when you return his flute, and he fades out and turns into this little wooden deer-like statue.
Wow that thumbnail with the Bubbulfrog showing off it’s big maw is quite a nice sight I must say.
Right? I had no idea their tongues were green!
I always thought the bubblefrogs were like greedy frogs that ate blupees and gems so the blupee outside would lead link to the cave to free it’s friend 😅

just wanted to say, with the introduction of bubblefrogs, came a new pin. It's the same blue-ish colour matching the bubbul gem and the other pins match the other rupee colourations. Thought that was pretty cool..
I also noticed how froxes which are yk, an enemy found in the depths, is also resembling of a frog. There must be some connection?
Satori veing a sage would make it even more wholesome considering who the creature is based made in honor of. Like Satoru Iwata himself is a sage.
Also it may be interesting to notice that the Satori armour protects Link while he takes damages, whereas fairies let him live again only after death
Oooooh
The gemstones they drop are called Mayoi-Sigmum in german.
Its possible, but in one of the labyrinths the ghostly voice tells you it is the “king of owls” or something along those lines
Leave it to Zeltik to make a twenty four minute video about Bubbul Frogs. Doing gods work. Keep it up man.
Well argued, the frenzy that Koltin has for gems every time he swallows some would also point to the notion that they fuel greed.
I'm sorry, but the names Tingle and Koltin are similar?
