So, I thought you were never gonna get to the Sheikah connection. Had a whole comment prepared and I am glad I waited until the video finished. I learned quite a bit, good video.
EBE the closest thing to a human enemy you kill is the yiga, but they disappear with magic, but link in any 3D game falls limp, supporting the redeads being human. (By human I mean hylian or sheikah.)
Think about why the enemies explode and burn up. The Master Sword is the blade of evil's bane. Key word being evil. It could support the fact that the ReDeads are not necessarily evil.
"I was struck by lightning. Walking down the street. I was hit by something Last night in my sleep. It's a dead man's party. Who could ask for more? Everybody's coming, leave your Body at the door. Leave your body and soul At the door."
Im surprised you didnt bring something up. When you are put into a room with more than one redead. If you kill one and leave the other alone. You will see the other walk over to its fallen brother and appear to mourn over it. I know this happens in OOT, i havent played the other games with redeads in it so i cant confirm this happens there either.
Actually more horrifying than huddling in the fetal position: ReDead morn their own. The AI isn't really quite there in OoT, but in Majora's Mask kill a ReDead from a group while wearing a disguise mask that makes them nonaggressive (or stand out of their aggro range). The others will cluster around their fallen brother and stand there, heads bowed, being super creepy.
They mourn in the same way in castletown in OOT! I saw it a few years ago, but you just keep some distance from them, and they will walk over to another fallen ReDead and appear to be sobbing.
They actually do the same in OoT. In castle town and the shadow temple you can kill one without alerting others, and they will gather around the fallen one until it disappears, at which point they return to where they started. Pretty creepy.
@@DaDeadDuck Would certainly be the most dreaded Zelda enemy. Lord forbid they behave like Cucco's and after you hit them a hoard come flying in all shouting the quote at you.
I think when a person dies in hyrule, they’re given those masks as a sort of tradition when they’re buried. Would make sense as to why Dampe knows what it is and is shocked at link wearing it.
If it is given to something dead when buried, it would make sense why he is confused and/or digusted to see link wearing the mask. It would basically be sacrilege or daring the spirits to come after him.
I don't know for sure that's true. Didn't some of the graves in the Kakariko Graveyard just have chests and piles of bones? I don't recall seeing ReDeads in EVERY grave I visited.
The ReDeads have always been the scariest Zelda enemies to me, and honestly I can't tell if this theory makes that better or worse: knowing they aren't necessarily evil, just suffering.
His theory also reminds me of the Dementors in Harry Potter. It seems that both Redeads and Dementors were dark creatures, respectively employed as guards by the Royal Family and the Ministry of Magic. Their initial existence had nothing to do with Ganondorf/Voldemort, but once those villains rose to power, they had no problem becoming tools of those dark lords.
The monks agreed to their role though, so would it be possible that the redeads in the tombs were once Hylian soldiers who agreed to protect the royal family even in death?
I can stand by that theory, seems quite plausible. Perhaps even these soldiers souls were able to move on into the afterlife, but their bodies were kept and reanimated as guardians to the Royal Family. It seems pretty honorable, having your body continue serving the Royal Family even after your soul has moved on.
I was thinking this, or that the Gibdos r Hylian knights (perhaps captains or ranking members of military) and the ReDeads r the more common soldiers....or something like that at least.
If this theory proves true then... Did the Shieka make ganondorf a redead mummy in BotW2 so that they could keep ganon at bay and not reincarnating forever?
Holy shit I think this is sound enough to be right... I mean. Killing Ganondorf without sealing him somehow will only lead to him being born again. Another life filled with Demise's curse. If Ganondorf doesn't completely die and is kept sealed away somewhere nobody dares to go, there would be no way for him to be reborn. Then, Calamity Ganon happened. Which I personally think was Demise's curse doubling down in retaliation.
Aren't Gibdos just wrapped up ReDeads? I vaguely remember that in Majora's Mask, if you shoot one with a fire arrow, the paper(?) reveals a redead underneath.
@@josstarfluff5052 as far as I know gibdos are wrapped redeads in only the 3d zeldas. The handheld games and the original zelda, gibdos when burned turn to stalfos. Could also possibly be like stages of decay. Newer burned turn to redeads. Older burned turn to stalfos.
I always wonder how far the devs really go into this kind of details. amybe they just thought lets make a zombie like enemy and everything else is coincidence. although in the end this is Nintendo and I certainly think they do get this deep. nice video man, thanks!
You forgot that in Hyrule Castle town the redeads will mourn when you cut down one of them, they walk over to the defeated one and watch/ sit down next to their fallen...
Yeah when I played this game on n64 when I was 8. I didn't stick around to find out. I gave up on the forest temple when the black hands would come down from the ceiling and grab you. To much creep for me
What if they are all Sheikah? We see that in Twilight, many of them rebelled and we're banished to the Twili Realm. What if before OOT, the royal family took the rebellious Sheikah, killed them all, and had the few remaining loyal Sheikah do this to them. It'd be the Royal Family's way of making the Sheikah literally serve them forever. Perhaps the remaining Sheikah even create the Sun Song as a way for someone to one day put their brothers and sisters out of their misery.
@@Zeltik Yep. It would also explain their gut wrenching scream every time they see a Hylian. They'd hate all of Hyrule for what the Royal Family did to them.
I never imagined that I would feel pity while watching a redead in fetal position for more than a few seconds, back when I was playing the game I was too happy to take advantage of the time they took to get up to kill them before they could pierce my ears with their scream.... but seeing them like that... you really start to feel the pain they're going through, they actually seem more terrified of their condition than you are...
What's worse is that the best you can do is actually take advantage of it and put them out of their misery. Even sympathizing does nothing because they will just be compelled to eliminate you, so doing exactly as you did in ignorance is still what you must do in knowledge.
As a kid when I played this... I used to have horrible nightmares about "the redead" aka "zombies from zelda" disturbing moaning, paralyzing your movements, and eating your brains
Or the sheikah could have volunteered to become redeads at death, so that they could continue to protect the royal family even in the afterlife. That would also explain the sheikah tribe that are being turned into mummies that are not unlike redeads in BOTW , as well as the fact that the redeads in windwaker wear similar tribal decorations to the sheikah.
Except for one thing the ocarina of time and majora's mask redead show none of the jewelry or markings of the sheikah. They are also the only ones we see shaking while in foetal position.
@@teadrinkingturret2088 Maybe the ones in OoT and MM are made from the corpses of people who were tortured by the Sheikah on behalf of the royal family, but the ones with jewelry/markings are Sheikah corpses reanimated as protectors of the earth temple.
@@ChazDinkle Exactly. WW and OoT are in a different era as well, so... maybe the Royal Family stopped using the bodies of tortured people and instead started using the Sheikah folks -- 'cause they probably consented with it, bringing less suffering for the Redeads in general.
I want the OoT ones back because they try to both piggyback you and eat your brains at the same time. Time to freak out the newcomers to the Zelda series. **rubs hands together**
@@xPumaFangx Then explain why the ones in Castle Town seem to weep for a dead Redead. When Link kills one, the others will seem to weep for it. Its very sad and also very very creepy and unnerving.
To me one of the most unnerving part about WW's Redead is when you approach, but just far enough to not provoke them they will just turn their heads towards Link and stare at him, or rather right through him, with those empty black sockets..
I thought the masks were just something cultural they did in the game, I remember you could get one of those in game, and it says it was used for burial of the dead, usually placed on the deceased.
"Shadow Temple... Here is gathered Hyrule's bloody history of greed and hatred." Yeah, the Hylian Royal Family's record doesn't seem to be spotless. I can get behind your theory.
The Shadow Temple always made me wonder how they managed to keep OOT at an "E" rating and not "T". It's something straight out of Resident Evil without the blood and gore. Now knowing that the Sheikah actually tortured and executed people there... wow...
@@nahor88 Funny thing about that, is in the original version of OOT there was blood on the floor in at least one of the rooms of the Shadow Temple. Dunno if it's in the later releases.
@@ethandement482 That's in the Bottom of the Well. There's no blood in the Shadow Temple, unless you count Deadhand. It's on the GameCube version, I know that.
They have one other human feature other then fetal position in the town square of OoT if you kill one the others generally dont attack you and they walk towards the fallen ReDead's corpse to weep for it Thanks for all the likes tbh wasnt expecting that many
You neglected to mention that when Link kills a ReDead, all other ReDeads present completely ignore him and stagger over to the one he just killed, where they look down at it and convulse. They don't snap out of it until that ReDead vanishes, so maybe that's another glint of humanity they possess: mourning for the loss of their kin.
It is most likely zombie cannabalism since ReDead take a long time to disappear. However, when ReDead gather at a ReDead's corpse, it doesn't take long to respawn.
@@gamersodaguy or maybe they are mourning, the fallen reDeads despawned faster, do to the reDead's soul is given rest, because it sees that it was loved by its kin, if you have read stories or seen movies about ghosts you would know that the ghosts haunt, because they have unfinished purpose, maybe the unfinished purpose was that the reDead's thought they weren't loved, so after seeing there kin mourn for them, they finally have rest.
seems legit. these guys are by far the most horrifying and sad part of zelda games. the way they fall limp on the ground is sad, the way they scream is...nighmarish
Dude, zeltik, this was great, I never noticed that the giant statue in the earth temple’s nearly exact likeness of the ReDeads. This is a Really strong and fascinating theory, Well done!
I noticed the giant redead statue but I didn't notice the significance of them sitting in the fetal position...I nearly cried! 😢 Next time a redead hugs me, I'll just hug him back, like, "it'll be okay, buddy, I understand. " 😭
Anyone seen that post on social media where it's like "imagine if spiders screamed when you found them" my brain automatically thought of the redead from this game
Can we just talk about the fact that his channel goes into so much depth and is really an awesome place for Zelda fans. You are a great and almost perfect Zelda channel dude, please keep up the great work.
Seriously though. I found this channel not too long ago and the videos are fascinating and are very well done. I've always thought of the games as not very deep when it comes to lore but damn was I wrong and happily to admit that. It makes me appreciate the games even more knowing that theres so much lore that people have discovered. Especially since I kind of geek out for lore based stuff in games
Agreed. A video popped up in my recommended last night, watched it and thought it was brilliant. Well written, well edited, full of information and leaves you asking questions, like these little details within video games should. Great channel and definitely earnt a subscriber from me!
I hope to see redeads in BotW 2! In very dark places, like Typhlo Ruins in BotW 1, hearing redead moaning in the distance, but not knowing where they are.... then suddenly the most horrifying scream in a video game to date, the camera turns, and we get introduced to a new generation of nightmares as the shape of a redead slowly emerges from the darkness towards you...
I think we can all agree that doing a group project with Zeltik in high school would have earned you full marks every damn time. No one does better research or weaves it together so beautifully. Love this channel

Wow. I love this theory. In OoT, it could even be assumed that the Bottom of the Well and/or the Shadow Temple was the actual factory for the Redead. It's a torture and holding facility for the worst criminals of Hyrule, and could have also been where they punished the most terrible of villains... eternally. This could also explain the Gibdos/Redead Knights of the Arbiter's Grounds. Also, I find it necessary to state that not only do they sit in the fetal position until disturbed, but can often be observed to rise and scream at Link, then turn back around and resume their crouch if you moved past them quickly enough. Their prey is frozen, right there, just a few feet out of their reach, but still, they grow weary and apathetic in their eternal service and cannot even make hat short a journey to take yet another life.
Worst of the criminals? Really buying into that hylian propaganda. They were torturing people who they thought posed threat to the ruling class and soldiers captured at the great war
@@rabnadskubla8594 uhh the stalkoblin, stalizalfos, stalmoblins, and stalnoxes are all variations on the classic stalfos. Just like stalhounds are in other games
You all have very good points. I really liked when the blood moon would come out. It gave Hyrule a nice spooky vibe. As far as enemies go, I feel like BotW was very lacking in a variety of enemies. Granted, I understand they played it safe as we didn’t know what the Switch was fully capable of. Maybe the next game will have more enemies. That, and a tool to change the weather. You know, like the Ocarina of the Rod of Seasons.
Great theory! One point however - you mentioned the Gibdo being different enemy types to the Redeads, however in Majora's Mask, if you burn them their bandages dissapear, showing them to simply be a bandaged redead. This could be dismissed due to it being within Termina, but if it were true, it could mean that the Royal family had also placed them in the Arbiter's Grounds, perhaps as a way to guard prisoners to be executed, or maybe to simply scare of regular people to prevent them from knowing what is within. If this is the case, there are if course Gibdos in tons of 2D dungeons, but in the 2D games they often become Stalfos upon being burned, so maybe this could dismiss it within 2D games, or just dismiss this idea completely?
I think it could depend on what’s underneath-like, depending on who they were in life. Like, apparently old knights, soldiers, and even a Hero get turned into Stalfos, while ordinary civilians allegedly poes or stalchildren (these guys don’t have a satisfying theory/explanation whatsoever. Especially since skullkids exist, too). And of course the redeads who are arguably “perfected” *shudders *
@@1014p Ok? I was 7 I didn't have a good understanding of games I do now. I know it's a silly reason not to play as adult link that's why I look back and laugh at it. I don't see why this reply was necessary.
What I find interesting about the Redeads is they only give you magic potion when you kill them. Other enemies give you hearts, money, magic, or even items. Redead only give you magic. That would be fitting, if the Sheikah people reanimated them with dark magic.
Toon Link is a baby little 8 year old that has to kill Zombie Pigboi in human form Young Link is a more mature 10 year old Swordsboi that has to do the same to both Pigboi Human and Pigboi Pig. So naturally, one is more scared than the other.
I think in OOT they were scarier in the N64 graphics because it was darker wherever they were. In the 3DS the areas were more lit and better brighter graphics lol. I hated going through town as an adult they creeped me out so bad. The ones in WW definitely scared me for life though. Playing as a 10 year old and ran into one of those for the first time in the earth temple. They will look right at you before they even get up!!!!! I would lie in bed paralyzed at night refusing to even roll over under my covers cuz I thought one was in my closet 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Same. I actually couldn't even play through the shadow temple for a long time because the under the well dungeon traumatized me. I rented the game when it first came out to see if I would like it, and the first thing I encountered on the save file was a redead in castle town. Scared the crap out of me, and I stopped playing it until the next day. I erased one of the other save files and started a new one lol. Just about everything in the earth temple scared me, not just the creepy-ass redeads. The floormasters were actually scarier for me. The sound they made just increased the dread. I always wore one of those masks that made 'em dance when I had to encounter them in MM. Made them just a little bit scary.
@@bloodstoneore4630 Don't worry too much, at least they're designed to match their respective game, unlike halo's brutes that constantly changed their design within a span of three games, two by the same developer.
@ChaosKirby Same. Hopefully the wait time will be cut because it seems like their using the same map. I just hope they show us another trailer for the game
The ReDead were always really scary to me when I was a kid. Although the scariness of them made me even more curious about them. Ocarina of time would have been even better if they did a complete remake of it and reimagine the ReDead and many of the other creatures like Dead hand in the graphic capabilities of today. I know creatures like ReDead, dead hand, and even Bongo Bongo would really look horrific if redone completely instead of just in a 3D version.
Breath of the Wild is this generation's Ocarina of Time... the sequel might as well be this generation's Majora's Mask. We were already told it was gonna be scarier.
@@preamble2persona i hope they go more into the sheika tribe honestly we see so much of them yet know almost nothing. From the gaurdians to the redeads the closest we see is the yiga clan but even then thats about it. I saw one theory going into bongo bongo being someone executed by the sheika tribe for theft. Using the fact it hangs like it was strung from its feet and possibly beheaded that said the missing hands and the executioners drum beat on entry as well. Its something to think about.
This gets so much darker. The redeads in castle town in OoT aren't Ganon's. They tend to hang around the same spots as the villagers prior to Ganon's reign... Could it be that, in a desperate act to protect the castle, that the royal family turned to the shieka once more? Did they turn the peasant village folk into redeads to fight Ganon's assault? The peasants would not know how to use a sword or how to fight, but a mindless zombie would be able to do some damage and wouldn't run from a fight. The royal family "mass produced" redeads by forcing the peasants into eternal death so that they can protect the castle. They are the true horror.
Makes me wonder... If the Sheikah DID create the ReDeads, were they trying to figure out how to expand lives while allowing them to keep their humanity? Maybe those experiments were successful, seeing as the Monks were able to do so.
I like this theory, but I don't necessarily agree with it. My theory is similar, though. If the ReDeads were meant to be guardians, it seems strange that so many of them would be placed in coffins and entombed, instead of placed in strategic positions of defense. I think it's more that the masks we see in OoT are standard burial masks, the way all Hylians are buried, and that the corpses are not reanimated through dark Sheikah magic cursing the souls, but instead a strong sense of purpose. The ReDeads are not random people or prisoners, but are instead soldiers, perhaps even fallen members of the Hyrule Knights, who have received the honor of being buried within the Royal tomb due to their valor. Even in death, their souls feel a sense of purpose in defending the royal family, and are risen when people attempt to break in, in order to protect the tombs of the royals. They aren't zombies, but instead haugbi, a type of draugr in Norse mythology. Where draugr are simply revenants who seek revenge and rampage the land, haugbi are unable to leave their grave site, and seek only to protect their tombs from robbers. In fact, several sagas attest that draugr are created when people are not buried horizontally, but instead upright. Where do we find ReDeads? Popping out of upright coffins.
I always thought of them as simple zombies - dead Hylians that came back to life, for some reason; ancient Hyrule magic, or something, or simply not wanting to/being unable to move on like Poes. In more recent years, though, I've been looking at them as guardians, so the theory in this video and yours are really interesting.
It would make sense though for the royal family to keep them in tombs. If they were placed in strategic locations and that were discovered then you can imagine the public outcry and horror in response to that. As redeads showing up in locations relating to the strategic defense of the kingdom would point a clear finger at the royal family involvement. However if they are discovered in crypts and tombs that could be more easily assumed to be some unknown dark magic reanimating the bodies of the dead with no royal family involvement. The redeads would be a valuable resource, yes, but also one that would have to be heavily guarded with no chance of a connection to the royal family. That's my opinion at least.
I think what the video was saying is that they're supposed to be guardians of crypts specifically. This method of defense was done in secret and is easily questionable from a moral standpoint at best. The royal family isn't going to place the corpses of the dead out in the open to protect the living. Can you imagine seeing your brother's decayed corpse standing guard outside town and huddling in the fetal position at times? The redeads are tortured souls, it's why the inscription of the sun's song tells you to bring peaceful rest to them, they aren't at peace.
When I was in my first play through, I was walking and heard the scream and I screamed as loud as an 11 yr old boy could. After that my family looked at me like I was Ganon wearing a skirt
What's crazy is that, as a kid, I never thought their faces in OoT were masks, but that was thanks to the graphics at a time. Still hate these guys with a passion, even though the Earth Temple is one of the favorite dungeons in Wind Waker.
I'm still convinced this was the case lol 😆 they decided it was a little TOO dark and decided to make them wear masks instead when they cleaned up the older games
As you said, the ReDeads in WW look strikingly similar to the Shiekah in BotW. So what if they aren't reanimated soldiers, but instead reanimated Sheikah. I mean, who else would be so trusted that they would be chosen to protect the royal family even in death?
@@dankrebs8507 that SORTA works but feels like a stretch. I do see and even understand but doesn't seem to fit too well. Still something to consider and I'm glad you pointed it out.

What about better enemies in general? I had so many hopes for how you have to fight like darknuts by hitting away their sheild with a heavy and then the only way to hit them was with a flurry rush. I’m a dreamer, but I was sad that this ridiculous thing wasn’t in
@@opy3914 Same. I was hoping they would introduce more enemies in the second DLC packs considering the "new story", but at least I have a bad ass motorcycle.
While I follow Hyrule Historia over Zelda Encyclopedia, I do like that you actually made the same kind of connection to the Sheikah that I did. I personally believe that the Redead in the WW are actually undead Sheikah, while the Redead in OoT are undead Hylians, TP Redeads are undead Gerudos, MM Redeads being undead humans, and the TFH Redeads are unknown haniwa. That's what I believe. And, yes, I'm a believer in Termina being a real parallel world to Hyrule. As I follow HH, not HE.
That theory is kind of in line with my idea, that there's more than one way to create a monster of the same name, and that the end product is similar enough that it takes insight across several generations to tell the difference between them. Some of them are indeed reanimated corpses. Others, however, may just be apparitions given substance, or something to that effect.
When I was a little kid I had a horrifying dream about ReDeads. Growing up, me and my older cousin would play games together on consoles like the N64 and GameCube at our grandma's house. We'd play games like Super Smash Bros Melee and Vigilante 8 to name a couple, it was a really fun childhood. I'd also watch him play games like Resident Evil 1 remake, which really scared me as a child. I also remember watching him play Ocarina of Time, and remember being terrified of the ReDeads. Those fucking ReDeads scared me so much they made me have a nightmare about them. I dreamt I was playing Ocarina of Time and I was all by myself in the house. I was was in the Hyrule castle town market as adult link. I remember freaking out because there was basically a horde of ReDeads in the ruined, practically apocalyptic town. I went to shut off the N64 because I was having a panic attack and couldn't take it. The console wouldn't turn off, I went to unplug it, it still wouldn't turn off. I remember backing away from the console to go run up the stairs, because I was in the house's den. But I was absolutely paralyzed in fear because there was ReDead trying to climb through the TV screen, thankfully that's where the dream ended. Funny thing is, even after those traumatizing events of my childhood, zombies have become my favorite horror themed monsters as an adult. I love playing games like Resident Evil now and reading stuff like The Walking Dead comic books :) .
When I first saw the redeads in casle town I was legitimately horrified because I thought the people who had once lived there had been killed by ganon in his attack
I've always thought that too. I don't think everyone makes it alive and to the Kakariko Village. I think Gannon also knew how to complete this ritual and used the townfolk to scare others of his power and to have a first line of defense that won't tire.
@@_Tzer I'd argue it is dependent on location and who may have been involved. Areas that were of the royal family, and thus defended, were voluntary(ish) mummies in the form of ReDead or the better equipped Gibdos. Areas that are more Ganon's influence still have Gibdos but they are moreso reanimated evil creatures, the Stalfos, though better equipped.
All the times I've played through Wind Waker and watched it being played, I never noticed the statue was of a ReDead. I loved your theory so much. It makes so much sense relating to the Sheikah.
Man, the first time I saw a monk in a shrine in Breath of the Wild, I thought it was a redead. I thought I was in for a boss fight. It took me several shrines to accept that the monks weren't going to try to chew my face off. Then the DLC happened, and Maz Koshia happened, and the monks creep me out once more.
I think Redeads are not Hylians, I think they're Sheikahs : it would fit with their disappearance, the dark secret of the royal family and the mummies of botw
i agree, i have started a big comment on this, putting together information people have suggested and elaborating on this concept. idk if you will be able to find it though.
I also agree. Didn’t the ancient Egyptians do something similar? Have servants buried with an important person so they could continue to serve them in the afterlife?
Not....quite. there's a difference between corpses made into undead guardians, and still living (they have a heartbeat and are mobile, per the last monk boss fight at the end of the trials quest in BOTW.) Monastic worshippers in a spiritually empowered form of meditative preservation. Granted now, they do die after gifting Link their spirit orb. They had no other purpose but to test Link, and after doing so are free to pass on. They're essentially in technical magical life support.
Yep, I honestly would have like botw to be more creepy like ocarine of time or majora’s with those horrifying enemies Edit: actually, botw isn’t creepy at all. Is peaceful while walking through the mountains and looking at the beautiful sunsest
This Theory actually makes me very concerned about the religious practices of Hyrule, between the fact that the Earth Temple in Wind Waker is exactly the architecture intended by the worshippers of the earth God possibly a death God and the fact that in Twilight Princess captives of War we're sacrificed ritualistically like what was going to happen with Ganondorf. Actually it just said that these were the prisoners that they couldn't deal with so that means potentially any prisoner could have been ritualisticly sacrificed... Not to mention the fact that in Skyward Sword there was that Temple that had the beautiful golden statue above and the literal underworld of death and undeath in literally squishy masses on the floor this was a temple in dedication to the religion of Hylia and whatever Pantheon she was from...
When I saw the sheikah monks looked like the redeads I realized I’m never getting a spirit orb again. This was such a good theory! It creeped me out. Those poor souls looking for comfort when they are in a sort of purgatory. Between light and dark. Life and death. This also leads to the theory of the monks being evil. You are able to die in a shrine, and even monk maz koshia attempts to kill you in battle. They created 3 deadly trials of the sword to see if you will die or not. The monks might actually be the redeads of BotW. There’s lots more elements to this. But to wrap it up… poor redeads, f the sheikah monks.
@@thebeardedgentlemen2648 innocent kid zelda fans: oh wow there's a new one! that's fun! :D nintendo, readying its arsenal of dark themes: i'm about to end these kids' whole career
I always wondered about the monks in BotW. It seemed out of place that they'd casually put living corpses in the shrines. I mean, they notice when you come in and then give you the Spirit Orb. This theory explains that. At least the monks seem to have gotten the "better end" of the deal. I mean, they don't seem to be suffering like the Redead. It's still creepy to think that this Sheikah technique of creating the living dead is really old. I guess it makes a bit more sense why the well in OoT was some guy's house originally: What if the head torturer lived there and just went down the ladder for work or something? Who else would WANT to live just above that?
Oof... turns out a scapped mechanic is That if you break the shield around the monks before you do the puzzle instead of just blocking it off... the monks will just kill u... lol theory 101
I'm not sure if I completely agree with your theory. If you're going to compare Redead to Haniwa, then you have to apply the local believe a bit more to the scenario. To the Japanese at the time, the realm of the dead and the realm of the living were one in the same. Hence why there are yokai and certain kami exist and do weird things. If a spirit has no where to go it might possess something or manifest as a vengeful spirit like a poe. If you apply the old concept of dolls being the proxy body for souls to either placate them or seal them until exorcism/redemption and the concept of golems, artificial bodies with artificial souls used to do various work; mash these concepts together to get where I'm going. Redeads could be the use of the Sheikah using the bodies of those who have become poes by taking the souls of loyal soldiers and citizens and binding them to these corpses. The instinct of attack anything undesirable (aka Link) is there and it's the best recycle program the Sheikah could use. In fact they could use it behind the backs of the Royal Family. Anything for the royalty. To me, it'd make more sense if whatever's in each Redead isn't the original and that's why they take the fetal position. Beyond being Redead, they're not even Redead in their original body. It may be a criminal's body who's soul turned into a Big Poe. Like the "Frankenstein-ing of soul to body" makes more sense to me and the main reason the Royal Family is "able" to utilize them is because the souls being used are the Hyrulian military and citizens who did not corrupt into becoming poes. What do you think, Zeltik?
That could fit into the masks made from coffins perhaps in a posession form you need something connected to the soul you want to posess the body. Its possible that due to the knowledge of the after life said souls mightve been driven insane hence the need to subdue them. Almost like a ghoul/flesh golem hmm hard to tell.
The dark side of Zelda has always intrigued me. That said, did you have to use the trial music from Skyward Sword around the 16:30 mark? I got some PTSD flashbacks from that.
why does it gotta be by force, thats a biig jump to make. the much much higher probability is that it was a volentary ritual, potentially the shika themselves volunteered when they got old.

Unlike other enemies, ReDeads do not burst into fire and smoke when defeated, but fall limp to the ground... and stay there.
EBE the closest thing to a human enemy you kill is the yiga, but they disappear with magic, but link in any 3D game falls limp, supporting the redeads being human. (By human I mean hylian or sheikah.)

I don’t think taht happens in WW, but it’d be cool
Actually more horrifying than huddling in the fetal position: ReDead morn their own.
The AI isn't really quite there in OoT, but in Majora's Mask kill a ReDead from a group while wearing a disguise mask that makes them nonaggressive (or stand out of their aggro range).
The others will cluster around their fallen brother and stand there, heads bowed, being super creepy.
They mourn in the same way in castletown in OOT! I saw it a few years ago, but you just keep some distance from them, and they will walk over to another fallen ReDead and appear to be sobbing.
Aw. That's sad. 😥 But yeah, also Creepy.
@@d.dementedengineerc99isurf26 Like I said: sad and creepy.
They actually do the same in OoT. In castle town and the shadow temple you can kill one without alerting others, and they will gather around the fallen one until it disappears, at which point they return to where they started. Pretty creepy.

If it is given to something dead when buried, it would make sense why he is confused and/or digusted to see link wearing the mask. It would basically be sacrilege or daring the spirits to come after him.

Their initial existence had nothing to do with Ganondorf/Voldemort, but once those villains rose to power, they had no problem becoming tools of those dark lords.
it makes it worse, the horror of the actions of another victim is way scaryer than pure malice.
I was ten when I played OOT for the first time... Never trust Nintendo rating games, they rated OOT General (G)
*DEFINITELY* worse!
Kinda reminds me of another revolutionary series that debut when OOT was released, Half Life, particularly the stalkers from HL2
Fluffy Lemons agreed besides I doubt princess Zelda could rest easy otherwise
I was thinking this, or that the Gibdos r Hylian knights (perhaps captains or ranking members of military) and the ReDeads r the more common soldiers....or something like that at least.
Kothar Korinth perhaps
Personally I think the redead are sheikah warriors and defenders of the royal family that passed on and were then turned into the redead
If this theory proves true then...
Did the Shieka make ganondorf a redead mummy in BotW2 so that they could keep ganon at bay and not reincarnating forever?
Outstanding move
Holy shit I think this is sound enough to be right... I mean. Killing Ganondorf without sealing him somehow will only lead to him being born again. Another life filled with Demise's curse. If Ganondorf doesn't completely die and is kept sealed away somewhere nobody dares to go, there would be no way for him to be reborn. Then, Calamity Ganon happened. Which I personally think was Demise's curse doubling down in retaliation.
Then why were there ancient gerudo symbols and letters flowing from the arm holding him down? could it be a sheika gerudo??
And these are the types of lore/theories that I just wished Nintendo could listen to.
@@mah1na If that's the case.. Ganondorf is gonna one pissed off boi

They do have red eyes in the Wind Waker, a Sheikah staple..
@@Zeltik Yep. It would also explain their gut wrenching scream every time they see a Hylian. They'd hate all of Hyrule for what the Royal Family did to them.

What's worse is that the best you can do is actually take advantage of it and put them out of their misery. Even sympathizing does nothing because they will just be compelled to eliminate you, so doing exactly as you did in ignorance is still what you must do in knowledge.
Yh

That would also explain the sheikah tribe that are being turned into mummies that are not unlike redeads in BOTW
, as well as the fact that the redeads in windwaker wear similar tribal decorations to the sheikah.

Hey you are also here!
Whoa. Didnt expext you to be here.

I Love The Scary Side Of Zelda
Don't we all? (:
Look at Zelda Botw Guardiens first Concept art i think u gonna like them ;)
The ReDead were always really scary to me when I was a kid.
I'll be disappointed if we don't get Redeads in Zelda BotW 2
Give the new generation of children nightmares, now in HD
Breath of the Wild is this generation's Ocarina of Time... the sequel might as well be this generation's Majora's Mask. We were already told it was gonna be scarier.
BotW was severely lacking in enemies, like it only had goblins, lizards and uh, lynels?
Nineth Lion someone didn’t play the game apparently
@@KicksPregnantWomen I beat the game though...
Here is gathered Hyrule's bloody history of greed and hatred...
Looks like the Royal Family has a few ReDeads in their closet, and that closet happens to be the Shadow Temple.
@giuliana bruzzese some may have escapes early, it seems that not all were turned. Still think the royal family is the heart of this darkness.

Zeltik is the new Shakespeare
You know what would be more terrifying than a Redead? A Redead that RUNS AT YOU after it stuns you.
That would just be a straight-up modern chaser zombie.
I've never noticed it until now, but the similarities between the sheikah monks in BotW and the re-dead from Wind Waker are uncanny.
Makes me wonder... If the Sheikah DID create the ReDeads, were they trying to figure out how to expand lives while allowing them to keep their humanity? Maybe those experiments were successful, seeing as the Monks were able to do so.
Wait a second...
Redeads are in horizontal coffins in OoT, as well though.
It feels odd for it to be guardians though. If that were the case why would they leave the crypt and invade Hyrule Town after Ganondorph takes over.
The Wind Waker's ones scream literally made me as a young lad almost shit himself.
I can’t take them seriously because they sound like elephants.

Then why would the souls be said to be restless?

Same.
Holy shit. That’s all I have to say.
When I first saw the redeads in casle town I was legitimately horrified because I thought the people who had once lived there had been killed by ganon in his attack
That's what I thought too!
I've always thought that too. I don't think everyone makes it alive and to the Kakariko Village. I think Gannon also knew how to complete this ritual and used the townfolk to scare others of his power and to have a first line of defense that won't tire.
When you hit a Gibdo with a fire arrow, it becomes a ReDead
depends on the game. In most games they become Stalfos.
Gibdos are just wrapped redeads (in 64, of course)
Maybe different states of decay more meat=redead less meat=stalfos
@@_Tzer
I'd argue it is dependent on location and who may have been involved. Areas that were of the royal family, and thus defended, were voluntary(ish) mummies in the form of ReDead or the better equipped Gibdos. Areas that are more Ganon's influence still have Gibdos but they are moreso reanimated evil creatures, the Stalfos, though better equipped.
@@clayxros576 Not all stalfos are evil as seen in majora.
I remember my first Oot playtrough, the ReDeads terrified me, I was stuck because I didn't want to go in the royal tombstone
I made my older sister do the royal tomb for me when I was 5 and I would hide in a different room until she got sun's song 😂

Theory: do you remember that meme where a guy laugh in the dark and we can only see his eyes and teeths ? Well thats a redead before mask
