- The complete session recorded by The Sundays on 28 February 1989 for the John Peel show on BBC Radio 1 and broadcast on 6 March 1989.
Tracklist:
1. I Won (0:07)
2. My Finest Hour (4:30)
3. Skin And Bones (7:42) - Видеоклипы
The Sundays can bring me back to in time like no other band. My husband and I were young and in love in the nineties, and The Sundays became a part of the soundtrack of our lives. We always hoped the band would tour again, as we never got to see them live here in the northeast US.
My husband died unexpectedly six weeks ago. Listening to the music tonight as I think of him, and finally write notes to his healthcare providers. The music has become even more bittersweet now, and forever. It’s like a dragonfly in amber, turning over in my hand.
Warm thoughts your way from the UK
Stu_Lopher Thank you.
music is both wonderful and terrible like that. some of these songs take me back to my high school years here in Southern California, listening to these songs with my best friend whom i lost at the tender age of 17. blessed memories.
❤
I’m so sorry for your loss. Sending thoughts your way as well.
There’s something so otherworldly about The Sundays. I like to think the people who deeply understand this extraordinary sonic presence are in a special and most fortunate club.
I still have separation anxiety issues from this band disappearing, seriously!
Saw them at the Town & Country club in London not long after the release of Blind. The quality of her voice and the band in a Peel session is astounding. Miss them so much.
Lightning in a bottle. I'm grateful they made music.
Words can't express how much I love this band. Often times when you hear bands in this genre play live, it doesn't compare to their recordings. This is even better. The fact that they walked away at the height of their career makes me respect them even more.
I saw them at Toads Place in New Haven, CT, still have the concert shirt. What a voice! I still listen to them often. Brings me back to my youth. Touches your soul.
I bet it was awesome! I still remember when I first heard them. My friend let me borrow the cassette tape. I played it as I cleaned my room a Saturday morning and it literally stopped me in my tracks when Skin and Bones came on. Her voice just trapped me. I sat at the edge of my bed and heard the whole album. Never finished cleaning my room. Fan ever since. That was back in 90, 91. Never forget.
that guitar is haunting and captivating wow
God I miss the 90s, if we only knew.
Her voice...damn.
my Sarah turned me on to the Sundays ...RIP my love ..forever and always
Listening to the Sundays on my drive to and from work help me to relax and not get upset and just enjoy the feeling of listening to the music, driving and just enjoying life.
I recorded the whole show back in 89. I still have it on cassette somewhere. All I need is a player.
Still loving the Sundays in 2022.
The Sundays, Jellyfish and Crowded House were my 90s and Train before they ruined themselves. Harriet Wheeler OMG Im still in live with her !
Still crushin' on Harriet. It helps to have such a great group interlaced with her angelic voice. She melts me, what can I say...
Notable how close it is to the album. Quality can't be faked.
this version of my finest hour is in Eb as opposed to the album version in E but I think the lower key and the lo-fi sound makes it more endearing, a great song with the best singer.
This version of My Finest hour is my favourite Sundays song, I dunno why but there's something about it that's even more magical than the original.
It's hard to fathom that they get this perfect sound live... every note is spot on on... great playing by all, but the vocals are not from this world; a real one of a kind.
I saw The Sundays at Slims in San Francisco in 1990. Near the end of their glorious concert, they played a melancholy song, "Turkish," rich in diminished minor chords, so beautiful and never released on an album.
😲💞28th February!? I am listening to this exactly 34 years after it was recorded!
This has always been such a special band. I'm so grateful to have seen then on the Blind tour - and I still have the ticket stub.
I think this is the most beautiful sound ever! I'm almost moved to tears every time I hear her voice. During the same era we had a very similar talent emerge from my area called The Innocence Mission. Such a magnificent sound! Who knows why they left it all behind, but I'm so glad they gave me one of my favourite albums!
They loved the music more than the fame. They never wanted to be "big" ..just make great music. When they had kids, they stopped to actually raise a family. Rumors still persist to this day that they might return. It's still not too late!
Innocence Mission is still active but does more acoustic / folk stuff now. They have amazing songs too
The guitar playing on Skin and Bones always blows me away.
Saw them at Warwick Uni in 1989, bought the album and T Shirt. Great gig nice to come back to it. Very talented band
I love that 12 string guitar. They got me into them. It’s now my favorite instrument to play.
I often wish to go back to the early 90s before smart phones and internet and social media, but I really DO wish there had been the ability for a high school student in coastal California to have gotten access to the Peel Sessions easily. At least I got to see them at the Palace in LA. And I'm with Nick- who in the heck could thumbs-down this?
Such a Wonderful Unique BAND
Waking early, drinking some pretty bad coffee.....sunrise over the still water...
But the mesmerising, upbeat vibe of the Sundays, rarely heard since the Byrds, takes the hour,,
Love you guys!....Harriet and
band....Great music exists under the radar of 'corporate cliched crap'...
Cheers from Minnesota, jon
Plus de 30 ans que la voix d'Harriet et les mélodies incandescentes du groupe vampent mes platines.. Et cela continuera. Merci à de tels artistes de nous transporter sans fin. 😎
Idem
J’avais 22 ans
I have many music heroes, but The Sundays continue to hold a special place in my heart. Everything is just right for me: the compositions, the angelic vocals, the sparkling guitar work, the melodic bass lines and inimitable rhythms of the drums. I saw them live once in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
Nothing short of unearthly beautiful........... Thank you.
Oh Harriet, why did you hang up THAT voice? Please, please, please sing again someday.
The soundtrack of my teenage years..I saw them back in 1993 in New Orleans ...I never knew until now that they made a peel session
BorlandRIP8 Peel sessions only posted in 05 for this glorious and unfortunately quite unknown band in France ...only a fistful nostalgie fans like me...So THANKS
+Tristan Arnoult France? You know, it was a pound they found in the underground.
Great sound quality...The SUNDAYS sound amazing.
Always remember hearing them played over the PA at Prince's UK concerts (pre-concert). I recognised the songs straight off as had seen the band a few times live when the audiences were handfuls. ( and I'd had the album and promos for ages too). Sure I have recordings of quite a few of their shows archived somewhere...
Prince was a fan of the Sundays. I remember reading an article with Prince and he name dropped the Sundays. And was a genius!
Awesome quality! I remember rushing over to the local Music Plus store and purchasing the cassette. It was $8.99!
Amazing band. Loved all 3 LPs. Amazing voice.
The sound quality is amazing. Thank you so much!
Thanks for posting this! I've been a fan since 1990 (in the US), but never knew of this Peel Sessions.
I love it. So raw. Rougher sound than the album. I love both
Everybody can sing; Harriet creates art with her voice. Not everyone is an artist.
Still sounds fresh as a daisy.
The dew on a buttercup
@@neiluk1470 What a great phrase!
@@TheSpikehere I must admit I was thinking of her voice when I typed that.
This is fantastic on every level. Thanks a lot for posting.
Peel Session...you know the sound quality will be good! Thanks for posting this...never got a change to see them live. Glad they sound as good as they do in the studio.
love this band!!!
Oh my. Spectacularly brilliant.
Miss them so much, thanks for uploading this.
Just wonderful ❤️
I wish I could've seen them live...
I didnt even know what the band looked like until they walked out on stage for the Blind tour. they were worse then kiss as far as what they looked like. pre internet. they were great live
I saw them live at the Town and Country Club in London in 1990! Unfortunately I don't really remember anything about it.
It was a great gig.
Heavenly, I love it
Fantastic! Thanks.
Reminds me of college years.
Love!
Damn this is unbelievable
It's a real shame that videography wasn't so accessible back in the day of John Peel, so that as well as the sound recordings there was footage of the event.
Great upload. Thank you so much.
I don't know why but listening to this version of "my finest hour" puts me in the same mood I've been in from reading Banana Yoshimoto's novels, specifically "Goodbye Tsugumi". And from watching certain Miyazaki films, "Kiki's Delivery Service" to name just one.
Will they ever come back to us .... the band's of my youth .... The Smith's, The Cocteau Twins, Prefab Sprout, The Sunday's, The Cardigans .... I guess u could say I like guitar bands.
Probably not..we enjoyed a golden era. I’m so glad I’m not a kid having to absorb the culture of today - most of it is soulless trash.
I saw an interview with Nina from The Cardigans a few years ago on swedish television, it was about music that had ment alot to the band and she said The Sundays was a big inspiration and they actually got there band name from the Sundays song Skin & Bones. Something I kind of suspected since they sounded quite a bit like them and came out just after the Sundays split up. They kind of saved me then, I missed them so much. I do concur on all the bands you have there. I got records with all of them.
@@jojjan34 do you have a video on this?
This is a band any generation could like
It's " as on record" with some energy added, what a trip back in time : many thanks
marvelous sound live, guitar sounds exactly as on the record. This has almost a cure-ish head on the door production sound!!
I still have the original vinyl..they were so good.. every track on this album is amazing...when you make an album this good what's next?
man im jealous!
Cannot put it any better, This album has so many memories and milestones connected with it, Good to know the music is amazing when you look back instead of the usual disappointment. great music great era for real music.
Me too - I remember I bought the "Can't Be Sure" 12" at the same time as New Order's "Technique" album, but fell off my skateboard and banged my head....staggered to the bus home, and just laid on my bed digesting a pair of aspirin while I played the 12" on repeat countless times....very soothing and comforting!🤕😊 Then a year later bought "R,W&A" on vinyl, later on a picture disc version, then a few years later on CD, then a few years ago bought the download....that album has been with me my entire adult life (turned 18 in 1989) and it still sounds as fresh now as that first play thirty years ago!🖤💜💙🧡❤💚💛
What's next? The two albums they followed up with! I could listen to her voice all day.
30 years ago and sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday.
whenever I listen to my finest hour it give me butterflies in my stomach
This confirms that the songs were already fully arranged and formed (and perfect), and all the producer (Ray Shulman) had to do was to turn up and press 'record'.
Good grief, what a fortunate man.
Oh Harriet ....
Yep. You said it...
Sums it up right there.
Buff said
Nuff Said (bloody autocorrect)
Fell for her back in 1989, but she & the band were fantastic too( not just a crush ) they're a big deal, very important part of indie music led the way.
I guess they'll never come back, but it would be amazing if one day Harriet lent her incredible vocal talent to another track.
Damn, 31 years. Harriet's daughter went to the same Bristol university where her parents met. That's sobering.
Sensational
Thanks for this treasure.
Love it... thanks!
It's not hyperbole when I say this band, this woman, in 1989 set me on a lifetime course of listening almost exclusively to female artists.. always looking for lighting to strike twice.
30 years on..
"I won the war and I feel proud"
Ok man put the gun down now
Have the party Harriet, it will be alright.
In the cellar? It'll be full of ghosts!
This is wonderful.
You are wonderful
For me this 'Skin And Bones' version is one of Harriets most impressive vocal track.
Great band: A masterpiece of a debut for the ages, followed by a great but somehow lesser “Part-Two” second release, book-ended by a swan song that popified and brightened their sound, nullifying their mystery and magic in the process; diminishing returns…
remember amazing....;)
Hook up a decent pair of headphones and it's like having The Sundays in Your front room.
only real fans here
🥰🥰🥰
A voice that defies gravity.
Coming up on 32 years ago...
Harriet, where are you now?
Wish you'd sing again.
London.
Harriet is a gift.
Wow
"But I'll keep hoping you are the one for me, and I'll send you letters and come to your house for tea. We are who we are, what do the others know?"
Harriet Wheeler seems to have a certain talent. Aside from her uniquely beautiful voice, she also seems to have the Perfect Pitch. Most of the band's live footage don't sound very good due to the lack of professional recording, but you can always hear that Wheeler hits every note on point, even if the melodies are very often not easy to sing.
And what also strikes me is that her voice sounds the same live as it does on record - apparently she doesn't need any help with production effects. Astonishing...
Oh, you see me in a cardigan.....and a dress, dress, dress that I've been sick on. Oh how are you!?
The Sundays..so much better than The Saturdays or Gavin Friday or ‘Til Tuesday..or..err..any other day related band. All I know is, those were the days my friends!
this is so fucking good with tequila. Beer and marihuana. Now . Goodbye cruel world
I would have followed Harriet around the world - beautiful
I love this band. Harriets voice is just amazing. Where are they?
They (Harriet and David) left music to raise their children.
sounds like the vinyl
She's singing a beautiful song singing "poetry's not for me"
EDIT: lol
Any chance to get your copies? Im a big sundays fan an I got a lot of nice live stuff to trade if you like (over 60 live concerts and a few from excellente audio quality). Thanks for the upload by the way!
I can get you a copy of this. Reach out to me at colonialsrv@aol.com
+Luis Eduardo Hernández Portillo If you go to youtube-mp3.org and enter this video's URL, you'll be able to download a copy of the audio at 128kbps.
Luis Eduardo Hernández Portillo How can I obtain a copy of a few concert videos from you? Do you have any videos from a date/time closer to their final performances?
Actually, I do had their last ever performance, there is a few videos on the internet, but I have the full show in good quality, there is another show at philadelphia, but I think in youtube is the complete show uploaded.
Whos playing acoustic guitar on I Won? Or did Dave overdub the lead parts?
No-one else is listed on that session, just the four of them, so presumably overdubs.
I prefer the Cranberries.... just kidding lol.
30 years? Really?
flesh and blood skin and bone, what did I do wrong?
I wish people who post videos on youtube could have a little more imagination than to just include a single still photo for the entire video.
