- The Guardians got Steven Kwan back from the injured list and Jose Ramirez was a single short of the cycle on his way to winning MVP of the Ohio Cup vs. the Reds in 2024.
Today's episode looks at the impactful return of Kwan and if the decision to option Myles Straw means anything about his potential spot on the postseason roster.
We also discuss the Guardians pitching plans for the playoffs, using Joey Cantillo and Gavin Williams behind openers this weekend and not allowing Tanner Bibee to face the Astros this weekend and what that could mean for their playoff strategy.
The episode also of course looks at the Guardians attempt at a bullpen no-hitter vs. the Reds and the 43 years since the franchise has thrown a no-hitter.
The show wraps up by talking about the Guardians prospects who will play in the Arizona Fall League starting in two weeks, including Chase DeLauter.

Cantillo will have a no hitter next year. Write that down.
I hope you are right
I really appreciate your work. Ty for your commitment.
I appreciate that!
So happy I finally got to see kwanie play!! And got to witness Clase break the single season save record and Josie go a single short of the cycle! Last night was a balst
thats an awesome experience I am glad you got to see all of it
Great job Gentlemen! I am always terrible about finding the poles when you put them out. Is there one to vote on your draft?
Not yet
How does a blister last 3 weeks. Sounds fishy to me! Ive had blisters on my fingers when i pitched and it lasted a day or 2...
Adam Miller had them for like 3 years
I don't believe in unwritten rules. If infielders are playing back to decrease the chances of a grounder getting through they are protecting the no hitter and "cheating" the batters. I say they deserve to bunted on IMO.
I agree
It was a 2-0 game. It was ok to bunt. Besides, it would be hypocritical for me to criticize, I broke up a no hitter in little league by bunting. It unnerved the pitcher so much, he gave up a lot of runs that inning, and we won the game.
The best reason to bunt is if it gives you a better chance to win.
Great job guys....#1 seed is possible....play til the end....Also Philly is still in reach!!!! We have the tie-breaker....think big....keep playing!!!
No having the tiebreak hurts the odds. I still wouldn’t do anything I wouldn’t otherwise be doing to try to get the 1 seed.
For the team with the best home record in all of baseball.. having home field through the playoffs seems important
Fingers crossed!
Why are people mad about the bunt. Didn’t Gimenez or someone do the exact same thing last year?
Lindor did it. I was annoyed with him at the time too.
I don't recall who and I am not annoyed
Pitching in the playoffs: The formula is to give up 3 or fewer runs in 5+ innings then hand the game to the bullpen. The Starter will only be in until he gives up 3 runs. The Backup Starter will pitch until the 6th or 7th inning (if he is going well). Then the long reliever ( ... Starter has reached the end of his string) or the shutdown artist ( high leverage situation) will come in when the ... Starter is in a bad place (for example bases loaded and nobody out). When they have the lead after the 6th inning hand the game over to the best 3 Closers in MLB -- the game is over!
yup just need to go 5 then go to the pen
I'm a Buckeye, married to a Briar, living in central Kentucky so I'll send y'all the KFC. Ha!!
That would be awesome
Very fun story Justin! It's all in the reflexes! (Watch Big Trouble Little China if ypu havent seen it)
I own the DVD (Jeff)
Should they add Enright to the 40 to add to the other three you mentioned?
Got my tickets for the first playoff game as a birthday present. Very excited. First playoff game live.
Had to buy three tickets to get two.
thats awesome man I got to go to my first ones in 2016
Lindor bunted in the 7th to break up a no hitter in a 2-0 game for Cleveland a few years back. Hard to be mad when this team has done pretty much the exact same thing.
Good point
I still don’t get Gimmy’s error. The throw was on line and took an easy hop. That error should’ve been on Naylor all day, it was an easy pick and he heeled it like a little leaguer. Why in the world would the scorer put that on Gimmy?
I think because of the bounce
@@LockedonGuardians I agree. Also, I don't think the pick looked all that easy.
I just hope that we don't get too cute and overthink the pitching situation.......
Agreed
There may not have been a no-hitter, but they did have a perfect game in 1981. Len Barker
They did but that was before I was born still it's been 43 years since the last one was thrown.
Nothing like some hardened blister skin to add some extra rotation
There is that I suppose
the guards don't want any smoke from any team this postseason. their record vs above .500 teams is atrocious. they have played poorly against houston (1-4), ny (2-4), kc (5-8) and just ok vs baltimore (4-3) and detroit (7-6). also in the nl.. they have a losing record vs. atlanta (1-2), la (1-2), milwaukee (0-3), san diego (1-2), arizona (0-3), but are mysterious 5-1 vs the mets and phils
I mean most teams you see something similar even the best teams are closer to 500 vs good teams
@@LockedonGuardians the astros bteam beat the guards Fri and sat. If they lock up again next wknd... it's going to be browns vs texans all over again.
@@LockedonGuardians someone found a stat that backs up this theory .. the Guardians have outperformed their BaseRuns and adjusted Pythag records, by something like 10 or 11 games. That’s crazy, and if I were a Cleveland fan, that would make me very nervous. IE.. the aesthetics and stats both show an inflated record this year. the guardians may be the worst overall team in the postseason bracket unfortunately.
That's gents, quality as usual 👍
Much appreciated
I think with Baltimore's lineup getting healthy, the #2 is the marginally better spot. But the AL is so close that it probably matters very little, unless you think home field matters in baseball. I don't think it does.
Home field clearly matters. Just look at the guardians home record this year. This team feeds off energy from the fans at progressive. Soo important in the game of baseball
There seems to be a degree of comfort which makes it help matter
@@siegewithme I don't think it matters much in the playoffs vs good teams. Both teams feed off the energy of a playoff environment. Multiple WC teams have made it to the WS in recent years that never had home field. What matters most is how well you pitch.
@@Zinter1984 maybe it doesn’t matter for other teams but the guards aren’t like other teams. They are good because of the love within the clubhouse. This group feeds off energy and emotion.
Lane Thomas is a stud!!
Has been a solid improvement
@@LockedonGuardians watch he’s gonna be big! Leave him alone in center field also he really playing that position well!
lol Herrin was def trying to hit TJ😂😂
Justin agrees
Perfect game is on me too. I was trying to explain to my kids why this was rare and the history and boom, bunt hit. My daughter told me I jinxed it.
We can all share in the blame
14 homers from Kwan is really impressive and really unexpected this year.
I agree that, notwithstanding the opponent, Boyd would be my #2 in a playoff rotation, but we can't ignore the opponent right? I think that #2 starter in the ALDS is gonna come down to opponent and the matchups.
I preface this by saying I do love black licorice, but screw the unwritten rules of baseball. Yes, it was 2-0 and the bunt made sense in the scenario, but I don't care what the score is, what the scenario is, how irrelevant the game is. You try to get on base in any way possible, even if you are the potential 27th out. I wouldn't say you owe the opponent nothing, you actually DO owe the opponent something: your best. You go all out to get on base in any way possible at any time. My job is to get you out. I debate whether or not that includes cheating. Many times, I think it does.
I'd throw at the batter if they did anything less. I don't want a cheap perfect game/no-hitter
Pries dropped an easy foul pop last night in the Columbus game with Karinchak on the mound. Game might have gone differently if he caught it.
.
Did you just condone cheating?
@@siegewithme are you under the impression that professional athletes have ever "played fair?"
it has happened all the time, in all sports.
I'm not even sure we could define what cheating is.
is pitch framing "cheating?"
@@GuardianofClevelandHeights pitch framing isn’t cheating.
Using a camera to steal signs and relaying them to the hitter by banging on a trash can is cheating. Using PEDs is cheating. Using a corked bat is cheating…
I am all for matchup starters if a team is awful vs lefties then use Boyd and Cantillo
We should do all bullpen games after game 1. The schedule allows for it, plus they're the arms with the best stuff. No "starter" should go more than 3 innings, except for Biebee
If Gavin or Cobb are rolling and staked to a lead I think you let them go a second time through the lineup (with a quick hook)
Just harder as you don't want to use those bullets unless you have to just due to guys naturally wearing down
You would wear the bullpen out, in my opinion.
How many playoff games will Rocchio's "miscues" and Josh Naylor's inability to catch the ball cost the Guardians this year?
Yes! We definitely have to play errorless baseball in the postseason, or we will be in trouble for sure.
You’re putting WAY too much weight on a few memorable errors. Both Rocchio and Naylor (especially Rocchio) are above average defenders at their positions. Like it or not, Rocchio will be a Gold Glove finalist at SS this year. He’s got the best range at his position in MLB and his fielding accuracy is one of the best in baseball despite the errors that stick out in your head. Don’t be a prisoner of the moment. Big picture both players are just fine defenders.
@davidwindell LOL! If you really believe anything you wrote then by all means please enjoy the sand you have buried your head in. Both of them have problems all year long, not just a bad week or two. Those are issues that swing playoff games against good teams and cost you playoff series. Go all the way back to Tom Kelly Twins forward for the last 30 years. It is a matter of fact and measured by the analytics that you reference. Those two have put extra pressure on the entire pitching staff by their "inconsistent" defensive play. And then the "domino effect" happens giving the opposing team valuable runs. It has happened all year long.
Rocchio has been mostly ok but Naylor has been a mess at 1st
